Demanding the Impossible, by Slavoj Zizek

Where are we today and what is to be done? Slavoj ?i?ek ponders these questions in this unique and timely book.  Based on live interviews, the book captures ?i?ek at his irrepressible best, elucidating such topics as the uprisings of the Arab Spring, the global financial crisis, populism in Latin America, the rise of China and even the riddle of North Korea.  ?i?ek dazzles readers with his analyses of Hollywood films, Venezuelan police reports, Swedish crime fiction and much else. Wherever the conversation turns, his energetic mind illuminates unexpected horizons.

While analyzing our present predicaments, ?i?ek also explores possibilities for change. What sort of society is worth striving for? Why is it difficult to imagine alternative social and political arrangements? What are the bases for hope? A key obligation in our troubled times, argues ?i?ek, is to dare to ask fundamental questions: we must reflect and theorize anew, and always be prepared to rethink and redefine the limits of the possible.

These original and compelling conversations offer an engaging and accessible introduction to one of the most important thinkers of our time.

The Latest bits from Zizek...
By TheMicrologus
Since this book is new (as of Fall 2013) and so far unreviewed, I thought I'd leave a note for possible buyers who are curious about whether or not this is a worthwhile purchase.

Zizek is famous for dashing off books in a relatively short span; he tends to release at least one per year, and often recycles material. Also important to note is that Demanding the Impossible is essentially the published transcript of an interview (the Amazon description reads "interviews," but it basically looks like they transcribed and cleaned up a single conversation or two). But while that might seem underwhelming, I would say that Zizek is at his best as a public speaker, so at the very least this text often captures some of the electricity of one of his talks. Just don't expect it to reveal forbidden secrets that have never seen the light of day.

This book is the latest in a slew of more accessible texts by Zizek (take, for example, "First as Tragedy, Then as Farce"). Thus, it shies away from the heady philosophical work Zizek can do, veering more towards social commentary, jokes, and the other sort of stuff he is famous for. But Zizek is almost always perceptive and thought-provoking, and he is undoubtedly the most important voice in popularizing Marxist thought today. Also important, at the least, is that it is the most current of his works (as of Fall 2013): he comments at length on hot-button issues and the goings-on in countries like North Korea, Iran, and Egypt (although this dates from before the Morsi ouster and the recent Iran election). If you're looking for commentary on the latest media buzz (again, as of Fall 2013), this is Zizek's best text to check out.

Overall, I'd say that if you've never read his works before, this isn't a terrible place to start (I'd also recommend The Year of Dreaming Dangerously, if only for its final chapter; it's a stunning kind of manifesto the post-2008 resurgence of Marxism). If you're conversational in continental philosophy and looking for a more theoretical outline of his work, you might do best to look at works from earlier in his career when his writing was a bit more focused, especially The Sublime Object of Ideology.

"Illuminates unexpected horizons" ~ Zizek genuinely challenged my thinking
By Terrance
This is my first encounter with Slavoj Zizek, and to be honest, the primary reason I choose to examine this book was because I was impressed by the title, Demanding the Impossible. The format of the book is that of an interview, with the various questions and answers demarcating individual chapters. Each question follows an overarching theme: "soyons realistes, demandons l'impossible," which translates as "let's be realistic, demand the impossible." Before I started reading, I thought it would just be amusing, but by chapter 2, I felt that Zizek knew what he was talking about and although the theme seemed paradoxical, the truth is nobody knows for certain what is possible and what isn't. This book attempts to redefine and rethink that boundary.

Demanding the Impossible is written in a colloquial style, making it fairly accessible to most readers. I don't have a background in political science or social theory and while there were many terms such as technocrat and authoritarianism that I was initially unfamiliar with, I really got a lot out of this book after taking time to understand the meanings. I personally found the points that Zizek brought up were relevant and weighty, and I had many good conversations discussing them with others.

One idea that Zizek brings up, for example, is that while capitalism allows customers to pick and choose what companies they do business with, capitalism taken to the extreme, where the majority of the population is served by a small handful companies, the end result is very limiting. As more and more people rely on internet search engines for information, and as governments further regulate service providers to censor "illegal" or "inappropriate" content, the net result is something that has the power to influence the general intellect of the public. Like it or not, there are great pressures to standardize social networks, communication, etc , and the question that looms is whether or not this is actually a good thing. The work that needs to be done, is not how to find a workable balance, but rather exploring and defining the measure of balance. Zizek does not give any practical solutions to the questions, but in my opinion, asking a good question is already half the battle.

Overall, I enjoyed Demanding the Impossible. I haven't turned into a revolutionary or anything, but I do believe the book has influenced me to at least pay more attention to and attempt to better understand politics and the world around me. It's difficult to objectively review a book such as this, but in my case, I really learned something, so I'm giving it 5 stars.

makes your mind sparkle
By Amazon Customer
This book is a series of essays by SZ in response to questions posed at a conference. They are spontaneous, as far as I can tell. So they seem off the cuff and un-thought out. So of course they are nothing like the writing in something like Less Than Nothing: Hegel And The Shadow Of Dialectical Materialism. SZ as always is ready with a way of interpreting everything in a way that is remarkably reversed from the way one might normally see things but with the sense of humor that is his trademark and the wit that makes even his reversed view on the normal in analysis of the problems discussed seem remarkably close to some sort of behind the scenes reality. A fun book to read because it makes your mind sparkle with the way things unfold. Many of the issues are similar to those he treated more formally in Living in the End Times.

Going Viral, by Karine Nahon, Jeff Hemsley

We live in a world where a tweet can be instantly retweeted and read by millions around the world in minutes, where a video forwarded to friends can destroy a political career in hours, and where an unknown man or woman can become an international celebrity overnight. Virality: individuals create it, governments fear it, companies would die for it.

So what is virality and how does it work? Why does one particular video get millions of views while hundreds of thousands of others get only a handful? In Going Viral, Nahon and Hemsley uncover the factors that make things go viral online. They analyze the characteristics of networks that shape virality, including the crucial role of gatekeepers who control the flow of information and connect networks to one another. They also explore the role of human attention, showing how phenomena like word of mouth, bandwagon effects, homophily and interest networks help to explain the patterns of individual behavior that make viral events.

Drawing on a wide range of examples, from the Joseph Kony video to the tweet that spread the news that Osama Bin Laden was dead, from the video of Homer Simpson voting in the US elections to the photo of a police officer pepper-spraying students at the University of California Davis, this path-breaking account of viral events will be essential reading for students, scholars, politicians, policymakers, executives, artists, musicians and anyone who wants to understand how our world today is being shaped by the flow of information online.

Review

Going Viral has won the 2014 Best Book Award by ASIS&T (Association of Information Science and Technology), and was named an Outstanding Academic Title by Choice Magazine (Association of College and Research Libraries).

"This concise and insightful book targets a niche topic in the studies of digital media that is becoming increasingly relevant to the public. It considers many questions and successfully accomplishes what it sets out to do. Students of media, digital worlds, and information will not be disappointed."
LSE Review of Books

''Virality is what make societies click at the pulse of the Internet. It is at the heart of the new forms of commerce, culture, media, social movements, and politics. This pathbreaking book explains what it is, how it works technologically and socially, and draws out the implications of this process for social change. It is a major contribution to network theory and to the understanding of the network society.''
Manuel Castells, University of Southern California

''Ever wonder why a video, meme, or idea spreads like wildfire online? In 'Virality', Nahon and Hemsley examine the technology, social practices, and cultural conditions that enable media to go viral. This illuminating book gets beyond marketing hype to provide critical insights for understanding the powerful phenomenon of virality. This is a must-read for anyone trying to make sense of how information flows in a networked world.''
Danah Boyd, Microsoft Research

''From Rosa Parks to Gangham style--a fascinating look at a defining phenomena of our age- virality, spreading, winner-take-all success. It is more than a fad-- Going Viral offers a compelling argument that viral processes are here to stay, and they are an essential feature of the online fabric.''
Albert-László Barabási, Northeastern University

A Masterpiece of Network Theory Popular Literature
By Arod Balissa
Writing about Network Theory for the layman is a tricky tak. Writing about an elusive and complex topic such as Virality is even more complex. "Going Viral" does so with a rare combination grace, precision and simpliciy. Instead of giving in to the glamour of spectacular events, guided by a hype of social networks in recent era, ultimately succumbing to a Teotological analysis of a real-life phenomon, Nahon & Hemsley offer an elegant sturctual approach for thinking about Virality. The book does not offer definitive answers or clear-cut, blakc & white presctiptions (the allure of "if you perform X, your video will be viral"), and that is exactly its greatest strength. Instead, the authors offer readers an opportunity to understand how viral events and items behave, how to identify & evaluate them, and offer insight as to their social meaning. Of course, the book does not aim to offer a complete and thorough social analysis - one may argue convincingly that this a lifetime task - but it does make a compelling social argument. The book definitely leaves the reader with taste for more, and I personally wish that there were more books that offer a structural analysis of social-network phenomenons. The book allows both the layman and informed readers to enjoy a journey to the depths of Virality, exploring its origins, providing a defintion, test-cases that are both up-to-date and robust enough to live-long. To be honest, this book is not perfect, and might be too much for those who wish to stay out of the academic realm. Indeed, although the book is highly accessible, it is academic in nature, and might not be suitable for every single person. However, its compelling arguments, rich world-view and its ability to address the zeitgeist and present the spirit of the time sure do make the reading worthwhile, even to those who are academia-averse. One more issue that impressed me the most about the book is its insistance on embedding popular culture in the theory. In short, a must read for those who wish to understand an integral part of social networks, those who are interested in new-media or just readers who look for a fascinating topic to devoure!

Could be catching
By Dr. Peter Davies
This is a good straightforward description of the phenomenon of the spread of viral ideas. It shows readers how it happens, and how it can go right or wrong. It doesn't show any of us how to get a viral hit- as the process is not fully controllable or predictable. It's more like a spark hitting kindling - bit the kindling is not together in one place- it's just spread across the world waiting to be pulled together by an item of current interest. There's not necessarily anything new about this- rumours have always spread by one means or another. What's new now is that the digital networks allow news and rumours to spread further, deeper and faster than ever before. This can be great if the news is good and accurate- but can be dreadful if the information is inaccurate, distorted and false. As Mark Twain put it, " 'A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.' We are all at risk of digital dismemberment, whether as individuals or corporations or government agencies. The good here is increased accountability, the bad is a great fear of putting any thoughts down into a permanent format that could then be quoted back at us.

The key ideas of this book are easy to summarise. There is a "top down" information push and pull and a "bottom up" information push and pull. As Shakespeare puts it,"There is a tide in the affairs of men, Which taken at the flood, leads on to fortune." In getting something to go viral there needs to be good content- new information, a new take, something interesting, well presented, and an audience wanting to hear about it. The information finds its audience by means of dense local networks (sharing with people we know well) and then passes through "weak connections"- those we may know only slightly- who find the information remarkable in some way- and pass it onto their own networks. The pathway sees virality as passing through several dense networks linked by weak connectors. The weak connectors must find the information "remarkable"- that is it is worth saying something about- to their own dense network. In this process there are certain key nodes- gatekeepers- who decide whether to pass information on or not. In the digital world we are all both gatekeepers, and receivers. We send some stuff round to our friends- and leave other stuff unremarked. Some people have greater gatekeeping roles than others- but this can change depending on the context. We all have a certain amount of credibility in certain topics and limited credibility in others. People find stuff remarkable when it's interesting, comes from a (usually context specific) trustworthy source, and fits with their preconceptions. As always it's hard to get a new idea accepted- to some extent what spreads often catches and crystallises an existing atmosphere around a topic. To some extent the world has certain ideas that it wants to crystallise out into a viral form. Modern digital communications and networks make it easy for this to occur. In practical terms if you are producing content you want to produce good content and be well connected- and hope that friend of friend gatekeepers will find a piece of your content remarkable and spread it into their networks. What content producers can never be sure of is what of their productions will be found remarkable by others. Many blogs produce good content, that goes read by few for many years- and then suddenly one of their pieces catches someone's eye- and goes viral. The piece that gets noticed may well not be their best piece- but for some reason, at that time, it captures many people's attention.

Virality has some uses- it's a complex emergent phenomenon- and it can get a key idea, or some entertaining triviality, noticed. But human attention is finite, fast moving and fickle- it passes onto the next thing very quickly. A viral item can leave clouds of glory or a trail of devastation in its wake. It's a bit like Kipling's success and failure- "if you can treat those two impostors just the same" Life goes on after a viral episode. The world rarely changes much because of it. Basic underlying processes are only slightly modified, if at all. It's a bit like yesterday's news becoming today's fish and chip wrapping. As Macauley commented, "We know no spectacle so ridiculous as the British public in one of its periodical fits of morality" and to some extent viral episodes are similarly absurd. Yet they are also important events-and reflect shared meaning making- and any of us could get caught up in one of them.

This book is a good guide to the phenomenon, its mechanisms and its strengths and weaknesses. If you read it you will come away with a clear idea of the process, and how to play your part in either generating or mitigating a viral event. I can recommend it as a useful book for all those of us who work in, amongst and with digital content.

A big like
By D. Geifman
Going Viral is a must read for anyone that is interested in network virality, meaning practically all of us who live a networked life. In this book, the authors offer a holistic and structured account of the phenomenon, its meaning, how it works, and its effects.
The book opens with a clear definition of network virality, what it is and what it is not. It continues by explaining what makes it tick by presenting a model that distinguishes between the role of the content, the agents and the context, and the role of the gatekeepers that exercise control over the information flows. The model further positions these two forces within the structure of the network. The book concludes by analyzing the effects of network virality on society and its institutions.
The book delivers an extensive body of relevant academic theory in a manner that is accessible to the casual reader. It does so by linking many examples of familiar and recent viral events and content to the theoretical account. The thorough reader can find some minor inaccuracies and inconsistencies but these, by no means, affect the positive experience with book.
I recommend the book as an enjoyable read for the academic reader as well as the general public.

Kittler Now: Current Perspectives in Kittler Studies (Theory Now), by Stephen Sale, Laura Salisbury

Friedrich Kittler was one of the world’s most influential, provocative and misunderstood media theorists. His work spans analyses of historical ‘discourse networks’ inspired by French poststructuralism, influential theorizations of new media, through to musings on music and mathematics. Always controversial and relentlessly unpredictable, Kittler’s work is a major reference point for contemporary media theory, literary criticism and cultural studies.

This is the only book of essays currently available in English on an important thinker whose influence across disciplines is growing. The volume situates Kittler’s ideas, explaining and critiquing his sometimes difficult writing, and using his theories to undertake innovative readings of old and new media. It also includes previously untranslated work by Kittler himself. Contributors include Caroline Bassett, Steven Connor, Alexander R. Galloway, Mark B. Hansen, John Durham Peters and Geoffrey Winthrop-Young.

"In this book, Kittler is painted as a forceful post-humanist thinker. His achievements include expanding what media theory can be through his pursuit of non-disciplinary energies. The contributors to this volume acknowledge this aspect of his work, which alludes to art, philosophy, science, and other modes of cultural production in an ‘eye-popping manner’. Kittler nonetheless defies familiar understandings of interdisciplinary research and challenges established research models. The best essays in this volume practice such an expanded form of humanities research."
LSE Review of Books

"Friedrich Kittler was one of the most daring intellectual figures of the late-20th/early-21st Century. This brilliant collection of essays responds to his ground-breaking work on media, mathematics, music, poetry and war. It is a must-read for anyone seeking to question the status of the ‘human’ in a world populated increasingly by media and machines."
Nicholas Gane, Warwick University

"Kittler's radical intervention in the Humanities has long been one of Anglophone academia's best kept secrets, partly because as a chain-smoker he disliked traveling on planes, and partly because much of his work has yet to be translated from German. This welcome volume not only offers two essays by Kittler himself, the other contributions here, by some of the most vitally important media studies scholars today, help import Kittler's provocations to the history and theory of cultural technologies into English-speaking academic discourse."
Peter Krapp, UC Irvine

"While media studies are currently strengthening their impact on the critical debate in the Anglophone world, it remains an open issue how to describe their specific question and, hence, their place in the humanities. Friedrich Kittler has been one of the few where to look for a comprehensive answer. This is the one point the volume addresses, beginning with the excellent introduction to Kittler’s work by the editors. Even more important in Kittler Now is, however, how his work is debated and adapted, critically modified and in some respects even radicalized in the ongoing, new, reception in England, the US and elsewhere. The volume presents engaged and competent essays which unfold Kittler’s famous “question of technology” to the humanities in often unexpected and critical, in very different and yet always exemplary ways."
Rüdiger Campe, Yale University

"Friedrich Kittler's media histories changed German media studies profoundly. His legacy has been felt across Europe. This collection brings together some of the best scholars on Kittler to assess and develop his work, and to place it against contemporary English-speaking media theory and philosophy. Especially valuable is a section on Kittler's late work on music and mathematics, including two of his own essays from that still untranslated body of work. Rather than place Kittler historically, the authors bring his questing, testing method to life for the next generation."
Sean Cubitt, Goldsmiths, University of London

In this book, Kittler is painted as a forceful post-humanist thinker. The best essays in this volume practice such an expanded form of humanities research.

Globalization and the Environment: Capitalism, Ecology and Power, by Peter Newell

Globalization and the Environment critically explores the actors, politics and processes that govern the relationship between globalization and the environment. Taking key aspects of globalisation in turn - trade, production and finance - the book highlights the relations of power at work that determine whether globalization is managed in a sustainable way and on whose behalf.

Each chapter looks in turn at the political ecology of these central pillars of the global economy, reviewing evidence of its impact on diverse ecologies and societies, its governance - the political structures, institutions and policy making processes in place to manage this relationship - and finally efforts to contest and challenge these prevailing approaches.

The book makes sense of the relationship between globalisation and the environment using a range of theoretical tools from different disciplines. This helps to place the debate about the compatibility between globalisation and sustainability in an explicitly political and historical context in which it is possible to appreciate the ‘nature’ of interests and power relations that privilege some ways of responding to environmental problems over others in a context of globalisation.

Review

"In this important book, Peter Newell shows that the relationship between economic globalization and environmental consequences is fundamentally political. Newell shows how, and for whom, the political project of unsustainable economic globalization has been governed, and provides a trenchant assessment of what its transformation will require. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the political task of putting the world economy on a more sustainable footing."
Ken Conca, American University

"In Globalization and the Environment, Peter Newell provides a much-needed critical analysis of the power that lies at the interface of the global economy and the global ecology. Through an in-depth examination of the governance of global economic relationships, the book masterfully uncovers the complex dynamics between different actors and environmental outcomes."
Jennifer Clapp, University of Waterloo

"Long-awaited and worth the wait, this book presents Peter Newell’s compelling analysis of the power relations that connect globalization, governance and ecology. Newell shows that there is no alternative but to move these relations away from neoliberal globalised capitalism and he offers creative practical suggestions for a new, democratically underpinned eco-logic."
Jan Aart Scholte, University of Warwick

"A well-argued, extensively researched exploration of the relationships between globalization and pervasive environmental and social destruction."
The Journal of Sustainability Education

Love Online, by Jean-Claude Kaufmann

The internet is changing the rules of the game of love. In a world where anything is possible, a potential date - whether it be a one-night stand or the start of a more lasting relationship - can be just a click away. Anyone looking for love online can throw off their inhibitions and can say what they have never dared to before.

The internet revolution has ensured that online dating has now become both widespread and commonplace. Online users can buy into the consumerist illusion that they can choose a man or woman in the same way that they would shop for groceries - this is the new hypermarket of desire. Women in particular can enjoy a new sexual assertiveness. Where once they might have looked for an emotional attachment, they are now demanding simply the right to have a good time.

However, love cannot be reduced to such simple terms. The apparently risk-free world of online dating is at odds with love in real life, which has its own demands and expectations. You cannot introduce another person into your life and expect everything to remain the same. Human beings have a way of turning your life upside down.

In this compelling book, Jean-Claude Kaufmann navigates this new emotional world and explores the tensions between sex and love, instant gratification and enduring commitment.

Review

"Kaufmann suggests that we have to reverse out of the cul de sac of sex for sex's sake and recombine it with love once more to make our experiences less chilly but also less clouded by romantic illusions."
The Guardian

"Demonstrates the inherent problems that many women still face when it comes to navigating romantic and sexual relationships, whether or not the internet is involved."
Times Higher Education

"Kaufmann takes us through the problems that both men and women face in navigating the murky waters of cyberdating … For Kaufmann, although love online increasingly looks like a hypermarket, it doesn’t really offer all the ease and convenience promised. We remain only too trapped by our own passions and humiliations when we try to build relationships with the real people on the other side of an internet exchange."
Inside Story

"Confronts the biggest development in the world of love and sex over the past two decade: the internet … Kaufmann's study mostly shows how the internet, far from transforming our love lives, simply compounds existing contradictions."
Prospect

"The internet - a new world unlike any we knew. Here nothing is final and irrevocable, everything can be tried and experimented with and there is always a second chance. But if this is blessing, it is surely a mixed one. What is gained and what lost? And, most importantly, how does love - that blissful state we so passionately desire - fare when suspended between online comforts and the rugged reality of the offline world? Jean-Claude Kaufmann offers us, the perplexed and the confused, a truly priceless service. He locates, spells out and carefully calculates the gains and losses revealed at the critical encounter of the two worlds, at the moment of truth: that first face-to-face date which follows online dating. This illuminating and enlightening study is a report from a battle which no one planned yet few, if any of us, can avoid."
Zygmunt Bauman, University of Leeds

brief terrorism dictionary
By William Garrison Jr.
"Dictionary of Terrorism" by David Wright-Neville (Apr. 2010), 221 pgs. Well, it's okay for general reference; if you want to want to learn a FEW MORE details than what is reported in your local newspaper. But, NOT a WHOLE lot of info - about only 200 words on any topic/terrorist group. As far as "terrorism" goes, it seems a bit farfetched for the author to toss in "John Wilkes Booth" as a terrorist for assassinating U.S. Pres. Abraham Lincoln (1865), but fails to list the Muslim prophet Muhammad (PBUH) for originating the fundamentals for Islamo fascism (see: "The Truth About Muhammad" by R. Spencer). The author noted that after shooting Lincoln, pro-Confederate Booth yelled "Sic simper tyrannis! (`Thus always to tyrants!') and noted that the phrase had been originated by the assassins of Julius Caesar, but the author apparently did not know/reveal that the motto was also on the state flag of nearby Confederate Virginia. Actually, I liked "Dictionary of Terrorism" by J.R. Thackrah better, it had more detailed info - but it being a 2004 publication has made it a bit stale-dated. Although a little pricer, I'd suggest instead: "Historical Dictionary of Terrorism" (3rd ed.: Aug. 2009) by S. Anderson with almost 4 times the number of pages: 880.

Identifying Citizens: ID Cards as Surveillance, by David Lyon

New ID card systems are proliferating around the world. These may use digitized fingerprints or photos, may be contactless, using a scanner, and above all, may rely on computerized registries of personal information. In this timely new contribution, David Lyon argues that such IDs represent a fresh phase in the long-term attempts of modern states to find stable ways of identifying citizens.

New ID systems are "new" because they are high-tech. But their newness is also seen crucially in the ways that they contribute to new means of governance. The rise of e-Government and global mobility along with the aftermath of 9/11 and fears of identity theft are propelling the trend towards new ID systems. This is further lubricated by high technology companies seeking lucrative procurements, giving stakes in identification practices to agencies additional to nation-states, particularly technical and commercial ones. While the claims made for new IDs focus on security, efficiency and convenience, each proposal is also controversial. Fears of privacy-loss, limits to liberty, government control, and even of totalitarian tendencies are expressed by critics.

This book takes an historical, comparative and sociological look at citizen-identification, and new ID cards in particular. It concludes that their widespread use is both likely and, without some strong safeguards, troublesome, though not necessarily for the reasons most popularly proposed. Arguing that new IDs demand new approaches to identification practices given their potential for undermining trust and contributing to social exclusion, David Lyon provides the clearest overview of this topical area to date.

Review
"Lyon's view is nuanced and he is conscious of the multiple expressions of citizenship beyond identification. He carefully details the increasingly interoperable databases which sustain identification cards, reiterating throughout that the card itself is only the tip of the iceberg."
Canadian Journal of Sociology

"Lyon brilliantly mixes precise distinctions with experimental inferences to make legible the current status of technology-driven identification systems and their future potential for sorting citizens."
Saskia Sassen, Columbia University, and author of Territory, Authority, Rights

"ID cards are an issue of growing concern in many countries. David Lyon provides fresh perspectives and many new insights into the way these systems work and the consequences they have for individuals and society. The clear, compelling and informative writing makes the book attractive to both specialists and the general reader."
Charles Raab, University of Edinburgh

"With an admirably lucid and clear style David Lyon shows how new technologies of identification govern new divisions of citizens and their others (strangers, outsiders, aliens) by decoding (biometric) and sorting (categorical) bodies. It also brilliantly illustrates how struggles for citizenship must now be also fought through databases (increasingly owned and controlled by 'card cartels') that make such technologies possible."
Engin Isin, Open University

These may use digitized fingerprints or photos, may be contactless, using a scanner, and above all, may rely on computerized registries of personal information. In this timely new contribution, David Lyon argues that such IDs represent a fresh phase in the long-term attempts of modern states to find stable ways of identifying citizens.

New ID systems are “new” because they are high-tech.

UUltimate personal information management society
By Tetsuya Koja
Ultimate personal information management society.

The subject of this book is a risk that all thorough, individual information to people brings.
The ID card might be necessary for all people.
In the probe of individual information, the peace and security is a purpose.

And, it is necessary for people's happiness to live.
However, the war doesn't disappear on this ground.
The crime has increased, too.

9.11.
The nation was cowardly before.
9.11.
The nation became more cowardly at the following.

The nation seems to fear the war and the crime extremely.
Therefore, they seem to be related to all individual investigations to people.

An enterprise and a regional all municipality want to do a thorough, individual investigation.
And, there are an enterprise and a group that does it, too.

Identity management.
Panopticon.
Protocol.
Biometrics.
Ubiquitous.
DNA investigation.
Others of capital letter.
Hard living of people who cannot have warrant card.
Immigrant's problem.

The author wrote this book by making good use of various technical terms.
He is explaining the favor and the risk of the warrant card.

However, there are a lot of candid advices concerning the risk.
The content and the intention of this book are complex.
I understood this book reading.

All people are offering individual information to a lot of enterprises and the organizations in the Internet society.
A lot of organizations and groups understand most data of people.

People had an investigation like that.
Therefore, man should not do the crime.
People should live honestly.
Anyone, and people should not follow the rule of the society, and must not trouble you.
The use of the credit card should accompany discretion.

We certain are meanings, and nakedness at the present age.
We cannot keep a secret.

The person must not mistake and live.
It might be a divine protection that the God gave people.

Twenty Observations on a World in Turmoil, by Ulrich Beck

Translated by Ciaran Cronin.

The world is a state of turmoil. From the financial crisis to the chaos in the eurozone, from the Arab uprisings to protests in Athens, Barcelona, New York and elsewhere, many of the familiar frameworks are collapsing and we have to find new ways to orient ourselves in a world undergoing rapid change. Of course, it is necessary for political leaders to address local issues and react to people’s specific demands, but without a cosmopolitan outlook, such a reaction is likely to be inadequate. Ulrich Beck’s Twenty-one Observations on a World in Turmoil is a demonstration of cosmopolitan politics in practice. It is more than a mirror: it is a magnifying glass that brings into focus the processes that are transforming our world and highlights the great challenges we face today.

‘Global domestic politics’, the concept introduced and developed by Beck, is much more than a political theory, a philosophical utopia (or dystopia), a governance programme or a mental state: it is the reality of our times. Beck turns the argument that ‘global domestic politics’ is an unrealistic ideology on its head, arguing that it is the proponents of the national who are the idealists. They view reality through the obsolete lenses of the nation-state and thus cannot see the profound global changes that are transforming our reality. Global domestic politics is therefore a perspective, a political reality and a normative idea. And it is the critical theory of our times since it challenges the most profound truths which we hold dear: the truths of the nation.

Attempting to Make Sense of Today's World
By Paul R. Waibel
I have hesitated to write a review of Ulrich Beck's TWENTY OBSERVATIONS ON A WORLD IN TURMOIL (Malden, MA: Polity Press, 2012), because I am not really sure what to say about it. The book is a collection of 20 essays written during 2009 and 2010 and published in various media. The author, Ulrich Beck, was a professor of sociology at the University of Munich until 2009. He has authored numerous publications attempting to make sense out of the world we live in.

The essays in TWENTY OBSERVATIONS are interesting. Having studied in Germany during the 1970s (I am only 7 months younger than Professor Beck.), I find his opinions about the role of Germany in today's Europe very interesting. But I feel that the book will have appeal for only a few American readers. Professor Beck's understandably many references to different departments of the European Union and German government and society are, I fear, meaningless to most American readers.
Another problem is the fact that the book having been published in Germany in 2010 and the USA in 2012, the content and observations are rather dated. Also, like all such books, and television talk shows, it is simply one person's opinion about issues only marginally interesting to most people, especially in the USA.

Admittedly, Professor Beck is one who speaks with some degree of authority on the subjects of the essays. And so I conclude that WORLD IN TURMOIL is a good book for the informed reader with and interest in global issues, and especially those having to do with today's Europe.

Conceptually Solid but Profoundly Dull
By AmazonJavaJunki
I was well prepared to enjoy this book; I tend to like non-fiction and especially enjoy views that may challenge the status quo or at least provide ample food for thought. While this book may indeed manage to do that, it does so at a price...to put it nicely, this is written as though it were a seminar in college. Informative yes...engaging - not so much. In fact, it was downright tedious in place. By the end, I felt the majority of the information could have been readily summarized in one well prepared presentation with a few bullet points on each of the main observation. Beyond that, it felt like a grand waste of precious time.

Learned thoughts on several important areas of crucial interest
By Neal Reynolds
These are essays which were written during the years 2009-2011. Professor Beck touches on several of our concerns including global warming, nuclear power, poverty, immigration, education, religion, and globalization. His concerns seem to be especially on global warming and globalization.

These viewpoints are voiced in a rather dry and academic manner. Hey, what else would you expect from a professor? At any rate, these comments are worth listening to. recommended to the thinking reader.

Review
"Provides a brilliant overview of the field and yet does not oversimplify. It is top of my reading lists for undergraduate and postgraduate students alike."
European History Quarterly

"A condensed yet comprehensive overview of how gender historians can open up history to re-interpretation. Rose demonstrates how gender can provide a lens through which to deconstruct and re-interpret historical knowledge, challenging the historical roles and realities of women and men and offering space to investigate previously unexplored aspects of the historical world; making visible what once was invisible."
The Kelvingrove Review

"Highly recommended as an accessible, reliable and erudite guide to the discipline."
English Historical Review

"This book is recommended for two reasons. The first is that it gives a coherent and comprehensive account of recent work on the subject of gender and history. As such, it sets out clearly debates and the context of debates. But the second reason is, in pedagogic terms, just as important: Rose's book brings alive important questions about our past, and not least demonstrates how a better understanding of history (and in this case we have to assume one that is gendered) is crucial to our view of the present."
Times Higher Education

"Sonya Rose has written a wide-ranging survey of an important and rapidly changing field of historical study. Notable for its clarity, its sophistication, and its generous appreciation of diverse approaches, this book provides a splendid introduction to the study of gender dynamics in history."
Raewyn Connell, University of Sydney

"In this very useful book Sonya O. Rose clarifies but does not simplify the complicated epistemological debates that have enriched gender history, and she provides succinct summaries of the abundant and far-ranging work of gender scholars that will profit readers from all fields and levels of preparation."
Robert A. Nye, Oregon State University

"This excellent survey of gender history is concise, informative and lucid. Herself a pioneer of the field, Sonya Rose explains concepts and terminology, debate and theoretical evolution, all with admirable balance and clarity. It will be a valuable guide to the history of gender for students and teachers alike."
Angela Woollacott, Australian National University

"This book is a lucid introduction to historians' engagement with gender. Rose guides us through the territories of sexuality, the body, masculinity, and subjectivity while demonstrating throughout the historical importance of gender's intersection with class, race and ethnicity. Written in a clear and direct style, and embellished with excellent examples, the book is a friend able to help the reader understand complex issues vital to our appreciation of the past and the present."
Penny Summerfield, University of Manchester

"Sonya O. Rose's book What is Gender History? is an excellent introduction in the development of the theoretical debates, methods and themes of gender history, which is extremely useful for every student who wants to explore the field of gender history and its evolution. It is written in such an accessible way that also undergraduates will find it very interesting."
Karen Hagemann, University of North Carolina
