After the Car, by Kingsley Dennis, John Urry

It is difficult to imagine a world without the car, and yet that is exactly what Dennis and Urry set out to do in this provocative new book. They argue that the days of the car are numbered: powerful forces around the world are undermining the car system and will usher in a new transport system sometime in the next few decades. Specifically, the book examines how several major processes are shaping the future of how we travel, including:
• Global warming and its many global consequences
• Peaking of oil supplies
• Increased digitisation of many aspects of economic and social life
• Massive global population increases
The authors look at changes in technology, policy, economy and society, and make a convincing argument for a future where, by necessity, the present car system will be re-designed and re-engineered.

Yet the book also suggests that there are some hugely bleak dilemmas facing the twenty first century. The authors lay out what they consider to be possible ‘post-car’ future scenarios. These they describe as ‘local sustainability’, ‘regional warlordism’ and ‘digital networks of control’.

After The Car will be of great interest to planners, policy makers, social scientists, futurologists, those working in industry, as well as general readers.

Some have described the 20th Century as the century of the car. Now that century has come to a close – and things are about to change.

Review
"Dennis and Urry show us how to do social science: how to move effortlessly between the macro and the micro, how to integrate problem spaces we once thought incommensurate, how to understand how we got to where we are and where we might be going."
Journal of Sociology

"Dennis and Urry exhibit a refreshing understanding of the sheer inefficiency and inconvenience of cars."
Lynsey Hanley, The Guardian

"One great aspect of this book is that it manages to build some possible and realistic view of the future without neglecting its unpredictability. After the Car is a very inspiring book that we would recommend to all people interested in the future of transportation systems – especially those convinced by the importance of carfree perspectives in building it."
Carbusters

"One of the toughest things to do is to anticipate discontinuity, to envisage a world - a life - beyond the car. The authors practice this art of the impossible in a fascinating way, opening up the social and sociological imagination for alternative paths of modernization."
Ulrich Beck, University of Munich

"A persuasive and readable summary of why motoring as we know it is doomed. The authors systematically chart the new technologies, oil shortages, environmental and other pressures changing the way we travel and the world we live in. If you want to know what the future might look like, this book is for you. Jeremy Clarkson is an endangered species!"
Steven Joseph, Executive Director, Campaign for Better Transport

"After the Car is a useful contribution to the debate about the role of the car which poses some interesting questions about its future."
Tony Bosworth, Friends of the Earth

3,5 stars - lots of questions, not very many answers
By Philippe Vandenbroeck
This short book offers a broad brush discussion of the future of the complex socio-technical system that has emerged around the automobile. The basic idea underpinning the book is that the car system is ripe for tipping into another regime because of crucial developments such as global warming, peak oil, rapid urbanization and the pervasive digitization of many aspects of economic and social life. However, the fact that it might tip does not mean that the car system will move into a very different form of mass mechanized mobility. Whilst the current regime is under pressure, it has proved to be very resilient over a period of more than a century by locking itself into a key position in the leading economic sectors and social practices of twentieth century capitalism. But the potential for change has never been greater and, if it happens, it will arguably have huge impact on our way of life.

So in trying to paint a picture of where this massive change might go, Dennis and Urry discuss a range of technological and institutional developments that might contribute to the emerging post-car regime: new propulsion mechanisms and materials, `smart' technologies, new mobility policies, alternative living and leisure practices, new ownership and usage patterns. A number of contemporary avant garde models are showcased to make the future of personal mobility more tangible. These models range from Bremen's clever transport system to the Transition Town Movement to Norman Foster's Masdar City in Abu Dhabi.

In a final chapter a set of three scenarios is offered to explore the shape of the post-car regime in a more distant future: 1) an `eco-communalist' future based on a network of downscaled, self-reliant communities under the aegis of `small is beautiful'. Mobility is severely restricted because of resource scarcity, 2) an apocalyptic future of `regional warlordism' where society fragments in violent factions resisting an autocratic elite. Mobility is restricted to the `happy few', and 3) a future in which personal mobility will be meshed with pervasive digital networks of control. The ability to move will be constrained at it will come at the cost of a significant loss of privacy.

Whilst the book offers a concise and informative traverse of a fascinating subject area, it has a number of shortcomings. Its brevity is a boon for time-constrained readers but it comes at the cost of both depth and comprehensiveness. There are important developments - such as the introduction of ultra-cheap mass-produced vehicles (Tata Nano) or the economics of personal carbon allowances - that receive very short shrift. Also, the argument is developed from a social sciences, not from an engineering perspective. The authors describe but do not critically assess the relative merits of various technological options. Furthermore, I appreciate the complex systems perspective that underpins the narrative but there is a lot of relatively recent research on the dynamics governing system-wide transitions that would allow for a more nuanced discussion. Now the argument basically boils down to the rather generic `system in a self-critical state + disruptive innovation = new mobility regime'. Finally, I was disappointed by the final scenarios chapter which connects awkwardly to the discussion that precedes it. Suddenly the security implications of global climate change move in as a dominant driver and one wonders why this hasn't been broached earlier. The scenarios are also rather stereotypical: the `catastrophe if we do nothing', the `command and control' and the `self-organization' stories have been turning up in various guises in many scenario exercises over the last 15 years. As a whole the book provides an interesting scaffolding for an imaginative and systemic reflection on the future of personal mobility but this is something that is left to the reader to complete.

Clear, easy to read, not a rant, but a good review of problem
By Tom
I wanted information and background on what might happen to the car culture and our ways of life formed around automobile use. Happily satisfied on a subject it is hard to be happy about.

The book explains how car use is not due simply to our habits and tastes, but a matter of a complex system evolved over more than a century. I liked the explanation of how complex systems work - better than many I have read before. Most interesting are the extensive descriptions of "disruptive" innovations already being tried which have a chance of producing a more sustainable future.

The book seems accessible to people not already knowledgeable on this subject, with plenty of background on auto technology, economics, resources and urban planning. But it includes much technical information (much of it notes) as well. Highly recommended.

Religion in the Contemporary World: A Sociological Introduction, by Alan Aldridge

In the new edition of this widely praised text, Alan Aldridge examines the complex realities of religious belief, practice and institutions. Religion is a powerful and controversial force in the contemporary world, even in supposedly secular societies. Almost all societies seek to cultivate religions and faith communities as sources of social stability and engines of social progress. They also try to combat real and imagined abuses and excess, regulating cults that brainwash vulnerable people, containing fundamentalism that threatens democracy and the progress of science, and identifying terrorists who threaten atrocities in the name of religion.

The third edition has been carefully revised to make sure it is fully up to date with recent developments and debates. Major themes in the revised edition include the recently erupted ‘culture war’ between progressive secularists and conservative believers, the diverse manifestations of ‘fundamentalism’ and their impact on the wider society, new individual forms of religious expression in opposition to traditional structures of authority, and the backlash against ‘multiculturalism’ with its controversial implications for the social integration of ethnic and religious minority communities.

Impressive in its scholarly analysis of a vibrant and challenging aspect of human societies, the third edition will appeal strongly to students taking courses in the sociology of religion and religious studies, as well as to everyone interested in the place of religion in the contemporary world.

Review

‘The new edition of Religion in the Contemporary World is a timely guide to the social significance of religion. It is comprehensive, clear and convincing. Alan Aldridge is to be congratulated for writing such a well informed and readable account of both the routine and the eye-catching aspects of religion in various regions of the world. From “cults” to civil religion, from secularization to state control, and from diversity to identity, the analysis of arguments and examples is challenging and shrewd. This is the sociology of religion at its best.’
James A. Beckford, University of Warwick

‘Aldridge provides an insightful and thoughtfully engaged discussion of the many varieties of religion in contemporary society. His smooth narrative and timely examples make religion come alive on the page and illuminate why it continues to be such a significant social force.’
Michele Dillon, University of New Hampshire

"This is a well-written and concise book and a thoughtful insight about the meaning and purpose of religion and religious belief for a contemporaneous and social society. This would be an important read for students and scholars interested in the sociological narrative and should certainly be a primary source of reference for those interested in why religion continues to hold its persuasive force."
Benjamin Bury, Birmingham

About the Author
Alan Aldridge is former reader in the sociology of culture at the University of Nottingham.

Review
“Leslie Stein, professor at Macquarie University in Sydney, in this lucid, learned and authoritative study of modern Israel, debunks the contention that the searing Arab-Israeli conflict is premised over conflicting territorial claims.” >  > “Stein chronicles Israel’s wars and con flicts, but also vividly portrays its achievements. Despite threats to its survival, its adherence to liberal-democratic ideals remains intact. Despite its size its literary figures and scientists are regular recipients of Nobel Prizes. It boasts the highest density of start-up companies in the world with more listed on the New York NASDAQ exchange than all of Europe. This is an invaluable study of this intriguing nation.” >  "This lucid, learned and authoritative study of modern Israel, debunks the contention that the searing Arab-Israeli conflict is premised over conflicting territorial claims. It is an invaluable study of this intriguing nation."  Tribune

"This is a clearly written, objective look at Israel today in all of its complexity and diversity. Anyone interested in modern history will learn a great deal by reading it."
Jewish Book Council

"This book, in completing the author’s trilogy on the history of Israel, deals with the events, both domestic and foreign, that accompanied the Jewish state from 1967 until the present. Through the use of well-researched, concise and autonomous chapters, Leslie Stein has produced a book that both combines an increasingly infrequent amalgamation of history and analysis, and succeeds in maintaining the interest of the reader throughout."
International Affairs

"Stein’s masterful account of Israel’s history since the Six-Day War is well worth reading. Novices wishing to get a firmer understanding of the complexities of the Arab-Israeli conflict as well as those well versed in the subject stand to gain immeasurably by adding this well-researched, scholarly text to their collections."
Frontpage Magazine

"Stein provides a detailed analysis of Israel’s wars, as well as Palestinian terrorist attacks, since 1967, with brilliant anecdotal information about the key players involved, and the impact of major historical events on the social and political fabric of Israel."
Canadian Institute for Jewish Research

"Of the making of books on Israel there is no end, but it is refreshing to read a new book, Israel since the Six-Day War, written by Leslie Stein. It provides an up-to-date broad survey,  precisely and clearly written, of the struggle of Israel to overcome the Arab aggression against it."
The American Thinker

"Stein gives a thrillerish (sic) outline of the difficulties faced by the fledgling state of Israel. For an Irish reader it can be bracing to come across an account of the last 40 years of conflict which is resolutely skeptical about the Palestinian cause."
Irish Examniner

"Stein's book distinguishes itself clearly from the larger number of books on this topic ... by reading the history of Israel from 1967 to today as the struggle of the Jewish State for its survival in a ferociously hostile environment."
Patrizia Carratta, University of Salento

"This account of Israel in war and peace during these difficult times is exceptional. Professor Stein treats Israel’s successes and its failures with equal care, and brings massive evidence to support his judgments. He has taken to heart the ground rule of historiography, which is to describe things as they really are. This has to be the beginning of wisdom where the Middle East is concerned."
David Pryce-Jones, former senior editor of National Review, former literary editor of the Financial Times and of the Spectator and author of The Closed Circle

"Beautifully written, informative and authoritative, this book is a little treasure that ought to be read by all those interested in Israel and the Middle East."
Ahron Bregman, Kings College London

"Leslie Stein's book on the history of Israel since 1967 is a thorough, comprehensive and well documented study embracing the political, intellectual, economic, military and social history of the country. With a deep understanding of the issues at hand, Stein has produced the most up to date general survey of Israel's contemporary history with the added bonus that it is written in a fluent and pleasing style."
Raphael Israeli, Professor at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem

"With this volume Leslie Stein completes his impressive trilogy on Israel’s remarkable rebirth, bringing the story to the present. Focusing on the international dimension since 1967, Stein gets under the surface and provides reasoned explanation rather than simple dry facts. Israeli perspectives - emphasis on the plural - have seldom been as well delineated. Above all, Stein tells the story with exemplary clarity and exceptional readability, making this a book to be enthusiastically recommended to both general readers and students."
Alan Dowty, Emeritus Professor at the University of Notre Dame

"A historically tense book. After all, no country in the world other than Israel lives among enemies united only to destroy it. Leslie Stein’s narrative is intricate and also clearheaded. It is the clear-headedness of Zion’s leaders against whom politicians and diplomats lodge all kinds of complaints. But we are coming to realize that the Arab orbit around Israel is a disaster, and peace with it more of a risk than an opportunity. This is not just a devastating chronicle. It is an enhancing revelation."
Martin Peretz, former long-standing editor-in-chief of The New Republic

Pages Sowed with Sorrow From a Sweet Pen
By Brian M. Ranzoni
--Brass Tacks--

This review covers the hardcover edition.
Well written: with a good narrative sweep and use of language.
Mostly Harmless: tries to stick with the facts, man, but ends up a little skewed anyways.
Make War, Not Love: not enough history that isn't related to war and terrorism.

--Brass History--

Israel has been controversial before it ever existed, when the British took Palestine from the Ottoman Empire in 1917. Thirty years before the land would be carved up into Israel, Gaza and the West Bank, British Mandatory Palestine was opened to Jewish settlement. Never mind the actions of the peoples who lived here--just the mere state is provocative.

So I find refreshment in reading history rather than heated opinions. Leslie Stein minimizes editorials in favor of reporting statements, decisions, and events. These elements are all arranged into narratives with little author intrusion, following an old dictum that writers must be everywhere and yet nowhere present. Creating a story from history sweeps the reading along as it teaches. I should also be free to interpret the presentation rather than be railroaded into the author's view.

Stein's stance nevertheless appears by his choice reporting. The history highlights Arab atrocities and aggression, downplaying their own suffering or sophistication to put Israeli sympathies front and center. The author is quick to jump on the hypocrisies of other nations--such as the entirety of the United Nations for Resolution 3379, which declared Zionism to be in the same racist boat as South African apartheid. He also repeats what I think is a little too pat, that Arab oil wealth (and OPEC embargos) seduced the superpowers into abandoning Israel. When nations favor Israel however, the book tends to slow down and subtly change tone.

Slant extends even to aggression. When Stein hammers the high-level Israeli incompetence leading up to the Yom Kippur War (1973), he omits any credit to Egyptian leaders for their successful deception strategy. So I read about intelligence director Eli Zeira and his obstinate belief that amassing enemies were just a military exercise, and no mention that Egyptians promoted the illusion with false reports and phony leaks. Taken all together, even the failures are all about Israel rather than skill of the enemy.

When Arabs are credited, like Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, it was for taking a dramatic reversal of position in favor of Israeli security. This gives me the impression of a risk-reward mechanism in the writing; Arabian initiative is acknowledged mainly by whether it endangers or preserves the Jewish state.

Sure, some choice reporting should be obvious--the book is titled "Israel Since the Six Day War", not "Arab Coalition Since the Six-Day War". Until I noticed that the particular choices allowed holes in the history, to leak favorable light on one nation and a shadow unto others. The prejudice is subtle enough that it might be an ironic accident of the author's attempt to be factual. Otherwise it comes across to me as a theme--the preservation of Israel the state as much as a history of the state.

--Military Brass--

"Israel Since the Six Day War" is a precise title. The author comes right out and announces that his book is a "broad survey" of history with a "particular attention to Israel's wars and military engagement". While a broad survey of history is a turn of phrase that doesn't quite dovetail with a particular attention to war, I'd say the cover image also reinforces the focus on military engagement.

The history attends to affairs of the state: mainly war, terrorism and diplomacy. Recap of the Six Day War precedes chapters on the War of Attrition, the Yom Kippur War, and the early atrocities of the Palestinians. These chapters take up the entire first third of the book. Camp David peace accords are stuck in the middle of a general chapter on postwar politics, between the fallout of Yom Kippur and renewed PLO massacres. I feel the book should give as much weight to the peace accords as to the wars; it was a turning point in Middle East alliances that strengthened Israel, increased American influence, and also freed Egypt from the Soviet sphere. However, many Muslims also felt betrayed by peace with the Jews; although Egypt's government became allies with the United States, it has also been Egyptian philosophers who raised the weed of global jihad in the late 20th Century. Again, I know some of this is straying from a history of Israel, so I would just like to say there should be more attention paid to topics other than war, especially if they seem to be topics that can track back into the author's preferred realm of conflict.

--Brass Pen--

I paid attention to the writing quality. So did Stein--he does a great job of avoiding repetitive use of the same words. Variety of language is another one of those writing dictums so often violated. In this case, by the contrary principle of regurgitating keywords all over the pages. Not so with Stein; I imagine his thesaurus worn-torn and ragged like blasted T-55 tanks across the smoking sands of the Sinai. The pages where he looked up synonyms for "incompetent", "stubborn", and "deceitful" must have the ink rubbed off, he uses these so much. Stein is also good about dropping dates to help place events, especially since some of his chapters backtrack.

Exception: his paragraphs make up for the diverse vocabulary with a confusing jumble of last names without titles. This is especially true when a figure is transferred to a different military command, political office, or diplomatic post. Without periodic reminders of the person's title and standing in the drama, I suddenly lose track of who is who.

Related to this bad habit among good writing, I also had trouble tracking the weapons and units involved. This is a history book with a declared attention to the military, so there should be some military specifics here. Stein will tell us that the Egyptians received 300,000 tons of Soviet materiel compared to a 100,000 tons of American supplies to Israel. What where these supplies? Occasionally he will drop a reference to a jet or a missile; for the most part I felt the narrative needed to show a little more of the hardware and the formations to help me get a picture.

Well researched & written, accurate, easy to read
By Eugene Tenenbaum Reluctant Reader
ISBN 074564726X (Israel Since the Six-Day War; 1st ed.) is well written by the highly educated native English speaker and not a translation. Thus, it is very easy to read with great pleasure, unlike My Promised Land. The content is accurate and based on a solid research. The author paints a vivid and rich picture of the recent history. The 10 included photos in black and white are of a poor quality and quite irrelevant. Also, the notes are somewhat inconveniently included at the end of the book and not on each pertaining page as footnotes. Approx. 95 pages of the book are shown by the Amazon.com's "LOOK INSIDE!" function. What cannot be seen is that the book is well printed on good paper, and hard-bound with a dust jacket. The covers are strong and flexibly jointed.

Best Read in the Entire Anthology but Good All The Same
By Kyle Slayzar
I read this one not realizing that it's part 2 in Leslie Stein's trilogy on Israel and, despite that, it was still a good read. Book 2 masterfully narrates the Six Days War and other contemporary historical events in Israel with an excellent style of prose that is easy to follow and understand.

This is a must read for anyone wanting to know more on the history and some political background on the nation of Israel.

Israel/Palestine, by Alan Dowty

What explains the peculiar intensity and evident intractability of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? Of all the "hot spots" in the world today, the apparently endless clash between Jews and Arabs in the Middle East seems unique in its longevity and resistance to resolution. Is this conflict really different from other ethnic and nationalist confrontations, and if so, in what way?

In this fully revised and updated second edition of his highly respected introductory text, Alan Dowty demystifies the conflict by putting it in broad historical perspective, identifying its roots, and tracing its evolution up to the current impasse. His account offers a clear analytic framework for understanding transformations over time, and in doing so, punctures the myths of an "age-old" conflict with an unbridgeable gap between the two sides.

Rather than simply reciting historical detail, this book presents a clear overview that serves as a road map through the thicket of conflicting claims. This expanded edition also includes a new chapter on the so-called 'fourth stage' of the conflict.

In this account the opposed perspectives of the two sides are presented in full, leaving readers to make their own evaluations of the issues. The book thus expresses fairly and objectively the concerns, hopes, fears, and passions of both sides, making it clear why this conflict is waged with such vehemence -- and why, for all that, there are some grounds for optimism.

Review
"An excellent analysis of the issue at the core of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, stripped of the 'subjective' accretions of emotions and passions, prejudice and ethnic hatred. It is the book to which scholars and belligerents should return in the heat of battle to remind themselves of the real issue at stake."
Australian Journal of Political Science

"Presents clearly the facts that underscore the tragedy for both sides of this conflict."
Journal of Contemporary Religion

Acclaim for previous edition:

"A veritable joy for the average Middle East academic connoisseur."
Political Studies Review

"Alan Dowty’s book now receives pride of place at the top of my list of concise, illuminating histories of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict to recommend. This will be a leading contender to be the textbook of choice in basic courses on the conflict."

The Most Balanced Overview on the Conflict Out There
By Robert Elrond
This book is fantastic. I use it to teach all of my programs that introduce people to the Arab-Israel conflict because it is by far the most objective overview of the conflict I've ever seen. It is concise, and offers readers a strong understanding of both the roots of the conflict, and the contemporary manifestations of the conflict on the ground--and all in less than 300 pages!

Dowty's approach to the subject is also very interesting--rather than telling the story of the Arab-Israel saga as merely a succession of wars (which is how most books present it), Dowty contextualizes the subject matter by first introducing the readers to the two over-riding narratives. The first chapter tells "The Jewish Story," showing clearly that, to understand Israel and the Israeli worldview, one must understand Jewish history and the constant theme of persecution and national disaster that runs through it from the Spanish Inquisition to the east European pogroms, to the Holocaust. Chapter 2 tells "The Arab Story," and shows clearly that one cannot understand the Arab/Palestinian story without a decent understanding of Arab/Muslim/Palestinian history including the "golden age" of Islam, the philosophy behind Islam, and also the legacy of the crusades and western colonialism of which many Arabs/Palestinians view Zionism as an extension.

If you are going to buy one book on the Arab-Israel conflict, this is the one you should buy. I have never heard anyone who has read the book say ANYTHING about bias--moreover, my students always rave about how refreshing it is to hear an objective voice amongst the clamor of the conflict.

The Best and Most Balanced Text on this Controversial Subject
By Myron J. Aronoff
Obviously a couple of the reviewers of this book have not taken to heart the old adage, "don't judge a book by its cover"! They clearly misinterpreted the cover of the second edition which depicts three Jews (two ultra-Orthodox and one secular). The young man is carrying a rifle that is standard issue for the Israel Defense Force. It is most unlikely that an Arab would be doing so while casually talking on the telephone in an ultra-Orthodox neighborhood. How this could be interpreted as anti-Arab boggles one's mind. Obviously one of the reviewers did not even bother to read the book in question which should have disqualified it for publication on the Amazon.com website. There should be minimum standards enforced for reviews.
I have used this book since the publication of the first edition as one of the main texts for courses I have taught at Rutgers University and more recently at the University of Michigan. My students (including many Arab-Americans, Muslims, and Jews) have found it to be both very balanced and blessedly free of professional jargon. It is comprehensive in coverage of the narratives of both protagonists, the historical background, processes of conflict, conflict management, and efforts toward conflict resolution. It masterfully explains the highly complex issues at stake with impressive clarity and balance. While there are scholarly treatments that contain more data and more extensive theoretical analysis, this is simply the very best and most balanced introductory text of which I am aware. I enthusiastically recommend it without reservation.
Myron J. Aronoff, Professor Emeritus Rutgers, University & Visiting Professor Emeritus, University of Michigan

A must read for anyone interested in the Arab-Israel conflict
By John Hancock
A refreshingly unbiased account of an overly politicized field. Dowty does an exemplary job of laying out the fundamentals this conflict's history in a truthful and sincere manner. Both scholars and students would do well to replicate his approach to the study of the Arab-Israel conflict.

Immigrant Families (Immigration and Society), by Cecilia Menjívar, Leisy J. Abrego, Leah Schmalzbauer

Immigrant Families aims to capture the richness, complexity, and diversity that characterize contemporary immigrant families in the United States. In doing so, it reaffirms that the vast majority of people do not migrate as isolated individuals, but are members of families.

There is no quintessential immigrant experience, as immigrants and their families arrive with different levels of economic, social, and cultural resources, and must navigate various social structures that shape how they fare. Immigrant Families highlights the hierarchies and inequities between and within immigrant families created by key axes of inequality such as legal status, social class, gender, and generation. Drawing on ethnographic, demographic, and historical scholarship, the authors highlight the transnational context in which many contemporary immigrant families live, exploring how families navigate care, resources, expectations, and aspirations across borders. Ultimately, the book analyzes how dynamics at the individual, family, and community levels shape the life chances and wellbeing of immigrants and their families.

As the United States turns its attention to immigration as a critical social issue, Immigrant Families encourages students, scholars, and policy makers to center family in their discussions, thereby prioritizing the human and relational element of human mobility.

Environmental Philosophy: An Introduction, by Simon P. James

Climate change, habitat loss, rising extinction rates - such problems call for more than just new policies and practices. They raise fundamental questions about the world and our place in it. What, for instance, is the natural world? Do we humans belong to it? Which parts of it are we morally obliged to protect?

Drawing on an exceptionally wide range of sources, from virtue ethics to Buddhism, leading environmental philosopher Simon P. James sets out to answer these vitally important questions.

The book begins with a discussion of animal minds, before moving on to explore our moral relations with non-human organisms, ecosystems and the earth as a whole. James then considers environmental aesthetics, humanity's place in the natural world and the question of what it means to be wild. In the concluding chapter, he applies his findings to the topic of global climate change, building a strong moral case for urgent action.

This accessible, entertainingly written book will be essential reading for students of the environment across the humanities and social sciences. It will, moreover, be an ideal guide for anyone keen to deepen their understanding of environmental issues.

Review

"Environmental Philosophy is an extremely readable introduction to the field. Clearly written and carefully argued, its discussion of recent philosophical approaches is admirably broad. It draws on a rich set of real-world cases and shows a keen awareness of contemporary environmental issues such animal ethics, climate change, and ecosystem services."
Emily Brady, Professor of Environment and Philosophy, University of Edinburgh

'Simon James has written an engaging book that covers many of the most important philosophical questions raised by environmental issues, and is well suited to serve as a text for a course in environmental philosophy.'
Peter Singer, AC, Princeton University

'Addressing a subject both diffuse and urgent, James's account concentrates on a well-chosen handful of its most essential challenges. He also ensures that theory, no matter how complex, is grounded in practice. The result is the most comprehensive and accessible introduction to environmental philosophy I know.'
Patrick Curry, University of Wales Trinity St David

Inside the Brotherhood, by Hazem Kandil

This is the first in-depth study of the relationship between the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood and its own members. Drawing on years of participant observation, extensive interviews, previously inaccessible organizational documents, and dozens of memoirs and writings, the book provides an intimate portrayal of the recruitment and socialization of Brothers, the evolution of their intricate social networks, and the construction of the peculiar ideology that shapes their everyday practices. Drawing on his original research, Kandil reinterprets the Brotherhood’s slow rise and rapid downfall from power in Egypt, and compares it to the Islamist subsidiaries it created and the varieties it inspired around the world.

This timely book will be of great interest to students and scholars of the politics of the Middle East and to anyone who wants to understand the dramatic events unfolding in Egypt and elsewhere in the wake of the Arab uprisings.

Review

"Kandil’s overall portrait o&ers an impressive but bleak dissection that debunks the wishful thinking of many liberals who imagined the Brotherhood as a left-wing counterweight to Egypt’s generals"
International Affairs

"The overall thrust of the book presents an interesting and plausible account of recent historical events in Egypt. But the real value of the work lies not in its ideological drive but in the richness of its empirical data and the rare glimpse of this well-known but little-understood religio-political movement ‘from the inside’."
Middle East Monitor

"A deeply intimate portrait of an organisation rightly known as “the mother of all Islamist movements."
Morning Star

"Hazem Kandil has written a fascinating, highly intimate account of the internal practices of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood.  Kandil takes the reader inside the organization to reveal detailed information about everything from recruitment practices to social network formation to construction of an organizational worldview.  Inside the Brotherhood is essential reading for anyone who seeks to understand the Muslim Brotherhood’s political rise and fall in Egypt."
Lisa Blaydes, Stanford University

"Hazem Kandil has written an original and challenging interpretation of the organisation and ideology of the Muslim Brotherhood enriched by unique access to members and functions. The subordination of policy and strategy to piety and proselytization helps to explain the Brotherhood’s  twists and turns at crucial points in modern Egyptian history, and their rise and fall since 2011, as well as the messianic reaction to their defeat and suppression."
Sami Zubaida, Birkbeck, University of London

"By probing what it means to be a Muslim Brother, exploring how the Brotherhood organization is structured, and placing religion at the center of the movement's amorphous ideology, Hazem Kandil offers helpful new interpretations even when going over familiar ground.  The resulting picture is not always flattering, but it helps shed light on the group’s sometimes puzzling behavior."
Nathan Brown, George Washington University

‘Fascinating and lively.’
Foreign Affairs

‘Hazem Kandil’s Inside the Brotherhood, as its title suggests, contributes remarkably to our understanding of the inner ideological commitments and organisational dynamics of the brotherhood through its examination of MB instructions, dozens of memoirs by MB members and years of observing and participating in its activities and social networks.’
LSE Review of Books

‘The overall thrust of the book presents an interesting and plausible account of recent historical events in Egypt. But the real value of the work lies not in its ideological drive but in the richness of its empirical data and the rare glimpse of this well-known but little-understood religio-political movement ‘from the inside’.’

Knocking down the myth of Divine Intervention
By Tarek Salah Kamel
Hazem presents an elaborate insight into the core pillar of Islamism as crafted by the Muslim Brotherhood in the beginning of last century: Religious Determinism .. Or the belief of the Divine Intervention to the Godly cultivated community of Brothers and Sisters ... He shows - in a deep and thoroughly researched logic - how this pillar is deeply entrenched in their mindset really from the internal life of Brothers and Sisters ...

Ironically, he explained, how the ideology of the Muslim Brotherhood group has always guaranteed their failure at each junction of political conflict in their whole history .. The book is irrefutable in its logic and the evidences it provides are critical alarming signals to the minds and hearts of the Muslim Brotherhood members, who - unfortunately -are not expected to value intellectuals and read their work with open minds and hearts as they have always not done!!

A study of the association between the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood and its own affiliates
By Sussman
.

The author Hazem Kandil is the Cambridge University Lecturer in Political Sociology and Fellow of St Catharine's College. His areas of interest are power relations in revolution and war, focusing on the Middle East, Western Europe, and North America.

Islamism is a term that seems to be used widely in general usage and within the context of this book. It's a term that refers to political Islam as a set of ideologies holding that "Islam should guide social and political as well as personal life". "Islamism" is a controversial neologism whose meaning sometimes varies. To my complete ignorance this is term I have not come across before, and thought it best to look-up and to try best explain its meaning, as it refers to the narrative at hand.

The founding of the Muslim Brotherhood in Ismailiyah in Egypt around 1928 by Hassan al Banna was possibly the first, largest and most significant modern Islamic political/religious organization. With the maxim "the Qur'an is our constitution," it wanted Islamic renewal through preaching and by supplementing its ethos through basic civic services including schools, masjids, and workshops. There was also the need to encourage and promote the use of Sharia Law in Egyptian society.

This book is comprehensive study of the association between the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood and its own affiliates. The research that has gone into this work has taken years to gather through observation, interviews, looking through previously isolated organizational papers, and writings, the book provides a representation of the enlistment and socialization of Brothers, the development of their complex societal networks, and the creation of their `brand' ideology that forms their daily practices.

The author shows why an attempt to compare the Brotherhood to secular social movements or other types of religious activism is a misnomer, and seeks instead to decipher the group's unique mind set. The author gives his understanding of the Brotherhood's slow rise and rapid downfall from power in Egypt, and compares it to the `Islamist franchises' it created and the variations it enthused around the world.

This text will be of interest to students and scholars of the politics of the Middle East. It should also be of interest to anyone who wants to comprehend the intense events currently transpiring in Egypt and elsewhere in the wake of the Arab uprisings.

Fascinating and frightening.
By Jerry Saperstein
This book is written by an academic for academics. Thankfully it is not written in the style favored by American academics which so often is impenetrable malarkey. “Inside the Brotherhood” is accessible to the interested layperson, who should also be the concerned layperson.

The history and nature of Islam is obscured in contemporary America for fear of offending Muslims and to suppress the truth. Islam is entirely unlike Judaism and Christianity. It is a religion of conquest, conformity and oppression. Over its 1,400 history, Islam has repeatedly expanded its realms through conquest offering the newly subjected three options: conversion (often forced), acceptance of subjection as a second-class citizen or death. Slavery has been a component of Islam since its founding and even today, several Muslim nations continue the practice.

There have been periodic attempts to “reform” Islam as well as other attempts to revitalize Islam.

The latter is the subject of this book, a history of the Muslim Brotherhood, an organization intended to purify and strengthen Islam by returning it to its Koranic principles.

The Muslim Brotherhood originated in Egypt in the 1920s and has birthed a number of related Islamic movements.

Author Hazem Kandil has performed prodigious research in an attempt to shed light on a very secretive, often very murderous political, social and religious organization.

A major issue is that much of the material is single-sourced or even anecdotal.

But it is frightening reading because Islam has become increasingly militant and is once again advancing by conquest.

Unfortunately, it is unlikely that this book will find a wide audience. That is a shame because ordinary Americans need to become aware of the threat posed by militant Islam.

Jerry

What is Historical Sociology?, by Richard Lachmann

Sociology began as a historical discipline, created by Marx, Weber and others, to explain the emergence and consequences of rational, capitalist society. Today, the best historical sociology combines precision in theory-construction with the careful selection of appropriate methodologies to address ongoing debates across a range of subfields.

This innovative book explores what sociologists gain by treating temporality seriously, what we learn from placing social relations and events in historical context. In a series of chapters, readers will see how historical sociologists have addressed the origins of capitalism, revolutions and social movements, empires and states, inequality, gender and culture. The goal is not to present a comprehensive history of historical sociology; rather, readers will encounter analyses of exemplary works and see how authors engaged past debates and their contemporaries in sociology, history and other disciplines to advance our understanding of how societies are created and remade across time.

This illuminating book is designed for use in graduate and advanced undergraduate courses as an introduction to historical sociology and as a guide to employing historical analysis across the discipline.

Review
“Petitions for a sociology that takes social change as its central object.”
Revue française de science politique

"Richard Lachmann's excellent, readable short survey of historical sociology gets to the heart of the enterprise: understanding the ongoing transformations that have created the world in which we live. Lachmann provides incisive reviews of the major fields of research to which historical sociologists have contributed. The book will be a very useful text for those who would bring the concerns and approaches of historical sociology to the larger discipline - who want to historicize sociology in order to render it more vital and more grounded."
Ann Shola Orloff, Northwestern University

"One of the major contributors to the 'historical turn' in late twentieth-century social sciences guides us through a fascinating journey in a discipline. By examining exemplary works in different sociological domains, Lachmann skillfully sketches the varied concerns of historical sociology. Written in a readable and engaging style, What is Historical Sociology? is a must read, and not just for those interested in (historical) sociology."
Roberto Franzosi, Emory University

A long needed synthesis of the field
By Kevan Harris
Along with his previous book, States and Power, Richard Lachmann has done a great service to the field of historical sociology with this book. His command of the literature is vast, and each chapter is a small review and synthesis of the outstanding works in the field on a range of subjects. One can read the book in a single sitting, and any grad student headed off to a social science or history department for a future Ph.D. should take a look at it.

Not what I expected
By Andrew Hartley
Just a long literature review. Not too much original work. Can be difficult to read. It can be difficult to determine what is the consensus because all authors are criticized
