Belonging: Solidarity and Division in Modern Societies, by Montserrat Guibernau

It is commonly assumed that we live in an age of unbridled individualism, but in this important new book Montserrat Guibernau argues that the need to belong to a group or community - from peer groups and local communities to ethnic groups and nations - is a pervasive and enduring feature of modern social life.

The power of belonging stems from the potential to generate an emotional attachment capable of fostering a shared identity, loyalty and solidarity among members of a given community. It is this strong emotional dimension that enables belonging to act as a trigger for political mobilization and, in extreme cases, to underpin collective violence.

Among the topics examined in this book are identity as a political instrument; emotions and political mobilization; the return of authoritarianism and the rise of the new radical right; symbols and the rituals of belonging; loyalty, the nation and nationalism. It includes case studies from Britain, Spain, Catalonia, Germany, the Middle East and the United States.

This wide-ranging and cutting-edge book will be of great interest to students and scholars in politics, sociology and the social sciences generally.

Review

“A well-written and wide-ranging overview of many important ideas about belonging.”
Journal of Social Policy

"A thought-provoking book on fundamentally important issues."
Sociology

"A rich, sound and consistent book within the classical political science tradition."
Journal of Catalan Intellectual History

"In Belonging Professor Guibernau skilfully deconstructs the many differing elements that determine the individual’s identity. In a world where conflicting trends, tendencies and tensions compete to define us, it is a timely analysis of the increasing complexities influencing much of the contemporary human predicament. It will become a standard work on the subject."
Lord Smith of Clifton

"Montserrat Guibernau reformulates the concept of belonging through an in-depth exploration of mechanisms of solidarity and psychological connections between citizens and communities. The author takes us beyond debates on national identity and nationalism by deepening our understanding of loyalty, freedom and trust - three dimensions that have been neglected for too long by social scientists and political authorities - in divided polities. This book is theorerically rich and highly accessible."
Alain Gagnon, Université du Québec à Montréal

"How to define and interpret the relationship between the individual and community? Guibernau demonstrates possibilities of new understanding of this almost secular problem by introducing the newly defined term belonging in mutual tension with identification and nationalism. Theoretical reflections are connected with pressing political problems of  our times. This approach is rich on inspiration and intellectual challenge for all social sciences."
Miroslav Hroch, Charles University, Prague

Review
Sets out a complete dossier of information in order to understand the origins, evolution and current challenges of the welfare state and social policy in North American societies compared with other western countries.
International Sociology

"The best brief account of US welfare available. Highly recommended."
Choice

"It has been quipped that on of the last bastions of British Empire has been the introductory social policy textbook and that might have been so: until now. Daniel Béland has finally breached that bastion."
Journal of Social Policy

"In this important and well-researched book, Daniel Béland examines the American welfare state in both a comparative and a historical context. What is Social Policy? Understanding the Welfare State explains in clear language how social programs protect individuals and families against fluctuations in the economy and changing risks that occur across the life course. From health care to unemployment insurance to old-age pensions, Béland makes a compelling case for why the welfare state is significant in shaping lives and reducing inequality."
Jill Quadagno, Florida State University and author of One Nation, Uninsured

"Ambitious in scope yet admirably concise ... Daniel Béland has written a very good introduction to U.S. social policy, one that is particularly well-suited to undergraduates and general readers."
Christopher Howard, College of William and Mary, Virginia

An Introduction to Ontology, by Nikk Effingham

In this engaging and wide-ranging new book, Nikk Effingham provides an introduction to contemporary ontology - the study of what exists - and its importance for philosophy today.

He covers the key topics in the field, from the ontology of holes, numbers and possible worlds, to space, time and the ontology of material objects - for instance, whether there are composite objects such as tables, chairs or even you and me. While starting from the basics, every chapter is up-to-date with the most recent developments in the field, introducing both longstanding theories and cutting-edge advances. As well as discussing the latest issues in ontology, Effingham also helpfully deals in-depth with different methodological principles (including theory choice, Quinean ontological commitment and Meinongianism) and introduces them alongside an example ontological theory that puts them into practice.

This accessible and comprehensive introduction will be essential reading for upper-level undergraduate and post-graduate students, as well as any reader interested in the present state of the subject.

Review
"An exciting, well-written, fun introduction to contemporary ontology."
Choice Magazine

"This is a delightful introduction, both to various ontological topics and to the general aims and methods of ontology itself. Effingham writes with an informal style and a lightness of touch that makes even the more esoteric and technical issues come alive, and the book is an instructive joy to read."
Helen Beebee, University of Manchester

"Nikk Effingham has done a terrific job - he provides fine, clear introductions to a range of important debates, woven through with methodological reflections, whilst his chatty, engaging style conveys the sheer pleasure of becoming an ontologist."
Katherine Hawley, University of St Andrews

Topics in the current field of ontology
By Jordan Bell
I have done reading in the history of philosophy and read this book as a summary of ontology. There are scarcely any recent books about ontology that would be worth reading by anyone but an academic philosopher, and the only history of ontology I have found is Van Steenberghen's, which is mostly about scholastic philosophy and is furthermore out of print. Rather than talking about Plato's Forms, or Plutarch's Ship of Theseus, or Anselm's ontological argument, or Occam's razor (which is about what entities we want to talk about existing), Effingham writes about ontology after Quine. Although there are imperfections in this work, there doesn't seem to be any better introduction to ontology. Furthermore, for a reader who wants to know about what professional philosophers are now saying this book is probably ideal.

Some fields ontology borders on are natural philosophy (do we think of fields as existing as things?), ethics (does an organization exist in the same way as a human does? does the economy exist?), programming languages (general questions about object-oriented programming), and theology (can we clarify what we mean by saying that God exists?). Natural philosophy and ethics are lightly touched on in this book but more could be said that a non-professional philosopher could absorb.

I expect that this will be useful as a university textbook. Usually workers in a discipline like to talk more about what people in their discipline now care about then what people in their discipline used to care about or about things they consider only on the border of their discipline, and for Quine, Meinong, David Armstrong, and other recent ontologists, this book is an easily read introduction. However, the literature would be improved by a book written at the same level (but longer) on the history of Western ontology covering the pre-Socratics (e.g. Heraclitus and Parmenides), classical Greek philosophy (e.g. Plato and Aristotle and the Stoics and Epicureans), scholastic philosophy (e.g. Duns Scotus and William of Ockham), and early modern philosophy (e.g. Descartes and Leibniz).

An approachable summary of the field coupled with a great resource collection!
By Matthew Rapaport
Dr. Effingham offers us a broad brush introduction to the philosophic sub-discipline of ontology, the examination of what exactly exists, is real, or is fundamental about our world. It is a modern approach in that he does not much mention the foundations of ontology in the ancient world nor the contributions of Christian scholastic philosophers of the middle ages who did so much to clarify the implications of God's (should he exist of course) infinity (See Peter Coffey "Ontology or the Theory of Being" [kindle available] for a long and detailed 20th century treatment of this). Dr. Effingham focuses exclusively on 20th (and early 21st) century secular ontology, both the positions themselves and various methodological considerations used to argue for or against them. The over-view, intended he says for philosophy undergraduates or perhaps people who are curious bout the subject matter but lack the time or inclination to persue many thousands of pages of dense argumentation, covers a lot of ground in a rather short book. I think he manages to accomplish his goal of coverting the subject from a very high level at the cost of some superficiality. For each sub-section (for example anti-realism about propositions) he mentions and abandons discussion of various approaches in favor of selecting one or a few of those he takes to be quintessential examples for [somewhat] more detailed treatment.

What saves the book from being too simplistic however is the resource collection he adds to the end of each chapter. I've written a few philosophy books and I know how difficult it is (I mostly don't bother) to find and cite extensive references on a large number of narrow subjects. I'm going to guess here that it took Dr. Effingham more time to collect all these references than it did to write the body of the text. I've already used this valuable resource to find other articles (many easily accessible as PDF or Web pages) written by the most well known proponents of these various ontological positions.

In sum, Dr. Effingham accomplishes his purpose. Thanks to both his over-views and his resource collections a student of philosophy or other interested party should have no problem using this little book to penetrate deeply into the field of ontology. I think the price is a little steep for the casual reader who is unlikely to make use of the resource collections, but otherwise this is a good overview of the field as it is today.

Telesthesia: Communication, Culture and Class, by McKenzie Wark

The telegraph, telephone, and television, not to mention the Internet and mobile telephony, are all forms of communication that move information faster than the speed at which objects move. Both labor and capital and armies and commodities once moved at the same speed as the information organizing them. Over the last two centuries, social space has developed a strange folded quality, where physical space comes more and more to be doubled by a space of the movement of information. Telesthesia, or perception at a distance, comes increasingly to characterize how we see and hear and know the world.

How does the evolution of different communication forms affect how we can perceive and act? How can the underlying infrastructure of communication forms be detected in the events of everyday life? These are the central questions animating this book. McKenzie Wark first explores relations between metropolitan and peripheral cultures – or postcolonial relations – with close attention to the texture of events that can happen when perception is mediated. He then examines what were once called postmodern experiences, and how relations of communication create new kinds of class relations and experiences of everyday life, from 9/11 to Occupy Wall Street.

Media International Australia

"From Sydney to New York, the real to the virtual, the theoretical to the practical and back again, McKenzie Wark charts the vectors of a new space that is neither here nor there and yet is transforming society and the economy in unprecedented ways. By exposing what is hiding in plain sight, Telesthesia challenges us to fashion a new politics of creative disruption. This book is provocative, insightful and timely."

Media Life, by Mark Deuze

Research consistently shows how through the years more of our time gets spent using media, how multitasking our media has become a regular feature of everyday life, and that consuming media for most people increasingly takes place alongside producing media.

Media Life is a primer on how we may think of our lives as lived in rather than with media. The book uses the way media function today as a prism to understand key issues in contemporary society, where reality is open source, identities are - like websites - always under construction, and where private life is lived in public forever more.

Ultimately, media are to us as water is to fish. The question is: how can we live a good life in media like fish in water? Media Life offers a compass for the way ahead.

Review

“Media Life is a daring, provocative and mindful analysis of the many ways in which media have become an irreducible component of the social. It is written in a very approachable style, presented in an impeccable typographic design, and is impressive in its scope of concepts, terminologies, and the body of examples from market research, art and popular culture.”
Christoph Raetzsch, Digital Journalism

"Draws on a wide array of sometimes sharply original ideas about both entrapment and opportunity, organizing them vigorously and often with wit."
European Journal of Communication

"This innovative interpretation of our relationship to media is both coherent and the fruit of much thought. It contains the promise of a long-sought-for new paradigm to replace the original causal-linear model of mass communication."
Denis McQuail, University of Amsterdam

"Media Life is a fresh and inspiring book, dense in original ideas and intuitions. It is an outstanding book to read, to study, to cite, to have on the shelves of your library, to lend to friends, to suggest to students, and to think about when you yourself take part in media life."
Leopoldina Fortunati, University of Udine

"In Media Life Mark Deuze gives us an immediate sense of the embedded, interconnected, and multi-modal character and necessity of media in contemporary life. It is also a window into the next generation of communication research and scholarship, where the familiar divides between channel and content, interpersonal interaction and mediated communication, the personal, the institutional, and the systemic will fade and reconfigure. Just as we cannot not communicate, today we cannot not mediate. An indispensable tour of the emerging boundaries of media studies."
Leah Lievrouw, University of California Los Angeles

Excellent book for anyone interested in media and cultural studies
By Meta Image
Mark Deuze does an excellent job of providing an expansive introductory survey for anyone interested in contemporary media studies. As a transdisciplinary field, media permeate all aspects of academic scholarship and our own lived experiences. Deuze's expertise in the field is evidenced by the voluminous literature review provided, in which he outlines copious amounts of research and highlights studies concerning all types of media, from the quantitative and practical questions being asked in Information Technology to the qualitative sociological questions being theorized by feminists, cultural theorists, educators and even sex researchers.

The author's historically grounded presentation of contemporary media studies is accompanied by the development and explanation of his own theoretical position that media and life are co-constituting and inseparable. Deuze makes a bold philosophical move by claiming that media should be viewed through an ontological lens, thus challenging media scholars to move in a new direction where inquiry no longer structures media and man as distinct but rather impossible to separate. A shift in researchers' ontological orientations will thus lead to the development of new understandings concerning the way humans live their lives in, through and with media, as opposed to the historical preoccupation of questioning the relationship between man and media (hence, the man-machine divide is not longer a productive metaphor for scholarship). Deuze wants us to be concerned with asking questions such as "what kind of life do we want to live?" and "how can we live through media to create new realities?".

As a digital media artist and a researcher in the field of Art Education, I found this book to be highly useful and relevant. Deuze provides a theoretical contribution that can be used to make a strong philosophical argument in support of emerging forms of inquiry methodologies for "creative research", such as arts-based research, art practice as research, research-creation and digital humanities (broadly). Additionally, this book provides an in-depth crash course into the interdisciplinary domain of media studies. As an interdisciplinary scholar who frequently finds myself spending countless hours doing literature reviews across an array of fields, Deuze's book is a refreshing time saver that includes a comprehensive bibliography of sources. The only criticism I have is that the book becomes redundant at times. A second edition with a greater degree of conceptual organization would likely prove as highly beneficial.

I would recommend this book to anyone conducting media research, in addition to those who are interested in understanding how the media they are using to support their research process might be shaping their questions and findings. This book would also be a fantastic read for pre-service teachers getting their degrees in Education because it helps to contextualize the pedagogical power of media which transcend traditional educational settings. Anyone teaching a media course should at least order a desk review copy of the book to check it out. Even if you don't end up assigning it, there's a ton of examples and resources that will support your own teaching practice.

Media Life - Solipsist Life?
By 888
In his accessible book Media Life, contrary to what some might think, the phrase 'living IN, not WITH media' counts as argument against, rather than in favor of solipsism. Solipsism, meaning 'one self', is the doctrine that there exists only what appears within my own mind - all else is illusion. Media Life gives countless insightful examples of how the world is changing, thereby conveying a thorough understanding of the experience of an 'other I' or 'zombie-I' emerging through media. The notion of zombies as 'other I' undercuts the threat of solipsism. Deuze indeed warns against clinging to one, 'authentic' and steady 'I' operating across all media platforms. Possibly the most intriguing thing about the book is how it takes the reader into an eerie awareness of our inability to report on and express to others real, coherent and original selves - the selves that we 'truly' are. As a result, it explains our duty to seize new opportunities for facilitating more beautiful and accurate, anywhere-anytime modes of being.

Review
"A fast-paced, authoritative introduction to what is possibly the oldest and still the most popular form of historical writing. The innovations of the past 50 years that reinvigorated military history and transformed it into one of the strongest sub-fields in the historical discipline are skillfully highlighted. Snooty academics who dismiss military history as a simple narrative concerning battles and generals need to read this book to discover the rich scholarship they have been missing. Serious military historians seeking new arguments to justify their specialty will also benefit from this informative and witty survey."
Gregory J. W. Urwin, Temple University

"A clear and thoughtful account of military history that is particularly valuable because of its chronological and geographical range. Interesting, well-written, and wide ranging, it can be highly recommended."
Jeremy Black, University of Exeter

"The thoughtful, overdue answer to a question that has needed answering since the profound transformation of the field in the years after Vietnam. Nowadays military history is so much more than drums and trumpets; it is the study of societies, economies, and political systems wracked by the human and material demands of war. Morillo and Pavkovic never lose sight of the centrality of battle to all of this, but lucidly fill in the strategic and social environment with a cogent review of the best, most recent literature."
Geoffrey Wawro, University of North Texas

"An indispensable aid for anyone who is interested in the study of warfare. World-wide in its scope, sophisticated in its analysis, and eminently readable, this remarkable work walks readers through the past, present, and potential future of one of the most complex fields of historical endeavor."
Andrew Wiest, University of Southern Mississippi

"Although military history is often accused of having a static and traditionalist approach, Morillo and Pavkovic show the opposite here. Their study of the influence of social, cultural, gender and global history on the field of military history enriches not only the content but also extends the methodological toolbox."
H-Soz-u-Kult

The First Book Every Military History Undergrad Should Read
By Scott Manning
Many programs in military history will start students off with A Guide to the Study and Use of Military History or a survey work such as Men in Arms. The problem is the former is dated, missing roughly 30 years of advancements in an ever-changing field. The latter is merely a survey work, leaving out any analysis of the field of military history.

Luckily, Stephen Morillo has produced What is Military History?, a short (164 pages, 124 pages of content), to the point overview of the historiography of military history, including its origins, evolution, and controversies. This is the first book every aspiring military historian should read, as Morillo addresses practical questions such as who reads military history and why.

After the introduction, Morillo provides a short overview of how military history started in ancient times and evolved through the ages. Here, he covers the Greeks, Romans, China, Islam, Byzantium, others. He transforms his narrative into a period focus with the Enlightenment, and nineteenth- and early twentieth-century. Finally, he dedicates the rest of the overview to the last 50 years of military history. This chapter is especially useful, as budding historians need to understand that the style of history that drew them to the field may be as old as three centuries, and possibly outmoded.

The third chapter breaks down the conceptual frameworks of how people write about military history, focusing on causation and military minds, the latter of which is "the most common and often historiographically dominant approach...in modern developed countries" (49). In discussing tactical histories, Morillo breaks down the levels of military action, followed by the art of war and practice of war. He continues the discussion by reviewing cross-field subjects such as anthropology.

The fourth chapter is one of the most useful, even to those who are knee-deep in the field, as it focuses on current controversies such as military revolutions, counter-insurgencies, and the "western way of war." These and other concepts will inevitably appear in undergraduate curriculums and Morillo provides the guiding light to the topics without the emotion.

The final chapters focus on how to do military history, as well as the future of the field. Again, these chapters are superb for anyone considering the field. Finally, Morillo provides a slew of recommend reading.

This book is short, cheap, and worth every penny. Anyone considering military history as a field should buy it and read it.

Peace Processes: A Sociological Approach, by John D. Brewer

Peace processes are mostly very fragile. This engagingly written book takes a bold new approach to the topic by beginning from the premise that sociology can identify those factors that help to stabilize them.

The book draws a distinction between the political and social dimensions of peace processes, arguing that each is dependent on the other. Consideration of the social peace process, neglected in conventional treatments of the subject, is made central to this volume. While complementing current approaches that emphasize institutional reform in politics, law and economics, it pays due attention to sociological factors such as gender, civil society, religion, the deconstruction of violent masculinities, restorative justice, emotions, hope, forgiveness, truth recovery, social memory and public victimhood. These important themes are fully illustrated with examples and in-depth case studies from across the globe.

The book locates itself within the growing debate about the positive impact of global civil society on peace and identifies the new forms of peace work engendered by globalization. It will be essential reading for students and scholars of peace studies in politics, international relations and sociology departments.

Review
"In many ways a culmination of John D. Brewer’s life work, Peace Processes is simply a remarkable achievement. It should be required reading for scholars, policy makers and practitioners who are concerned with peace."
Glady Ganiel, Sociology

"A very valuable, pioneering study that simultaneously highlights the centrality of sociological analysis for understanding peace processes and opens sociology to such neglected but central topics as peace, war and organized violence."
Siniša Maleševic, Sociology

"Brewer’s sociological approach is refreshingly different; Brewer is a westerner applying much of the wisdom of the non-West to conflicts in the West. A very promising approach."
Johan Galtung, Sociology

"John Brewer's Peace Processes: A Sociological Approach stands out for two reasons: first because it is written in an accessible, reader-friendly manner - a sign, I always think, of the author's self-confidence - and second, because it is replete with references to key writers and debates in the field of what can broadly be called international relations. It would therefore be of interest to the initiated and uninitiated alike."
Times Higher Education Supplement

"Great social science nearly always comes from confronting traumatic experience. That is what we have here, as the result of Brewer's visceral experience in Northern Ireland: a massive contribution to understanding peace processes, adding sociology to prior political science knowledge - and thereby reviving that discipline. The book is moving, scholarly, cognitively powerful and a major contribution to policy. It is a terrific achievement."
John A. Hall, McGill University

"The book provides a comprehensive and original analysis of peace processes. Brewer demonstrates the relevance of a sociological perspective in pointing to the centrality of communal violence and its structural context as well as the wider global context. His analysis of types of post-violence society is most interesting and rich in terms of its comparative content. The argument is nicely situated in the sociological tradition and is immensely readable. It will be an essential work of reference on post-violence societies and in peace processes."
Gerard Delanty, University of Sussex

"John Brewer's book is a unique contribution to our understandings of peace- making, a path-breaking work of creative scholarship that sharply illuminates the complexly contradictory potentials for, and barriers to, pragmatic peace-making in the wake of war and communal violence. The innovative insights in this work will provoke important constructive discussion and policy debates for years to come, while also providing significant conceptual frameworks for peace activists around the world."
John Brown Childs, University of California Santa Cruz

Review

From the Back Cover

East Asia's Reemergence, by Philip S. Golub

East Asia has re-emerged after a long eclipse as a centre of world wealth creation and growth. Over the past four decades the region’s share of world GDP has risen from less than 10 to 30 percent, a ratio that is set to rise to 40 percent by 2030.

What has made East Asia’s remarkable ascent possible, and what does this economic rebalancing between East and West mean for world politics? In this insightful and provocative book, Philip Golub addresses these questions, tracing the region’s rise from the early modern European-Asian encounter to the imperial confrontations of the nineteenth century, and China’s state capitalist turn in the latter half of the twentieth century. Together, he argues, the dynamics of imperialism, war and revolution led to the constitution of developmental states that made possible East Asia’s return to a central position in the global economy.

Combining rich historical narrative and social theory, this book is an invaluable guide to one of the core issues in world politics today.

In contrast to other regions born of empire, South Asia has emerged as the locus of both hyper-advanced actors in global capitalism, and the source of the most significant counter-systemic challenge to it. Will the region survive these seeming contradictions, and what will be the effect on the rebalancing of global power? Philip Golub’s timely study provides a unique perspective on these contradictory trend, and illuminating answers to these questions. This is an eminently readable and intellectually stimulating study by one of the most astute observers of global trends.

Alter-Globalization: Becoming Actors in a Global Age, by Geoffrey Pleyers

Contrary to the common view that globalization undermines social agency, ‘alter-globalization activists', that is, those who contest globalization in its neo-liberal form, have developed new ways to become actors in the global age. They propose alternatives to Washington Consensus policies, implement horizontal and participatory organization models and promote a nascent global public space.

Rather than being anti-globalization, these activists have built a truly global movement that has gathered citizens, committed intellectuals, indigenous, farmers, dalits and NGOs against neoliberal policies in street demonstrations and Social Forums all over the world, from Bangalore to Seattle and from Porto Alegre to Nairobi. This book analyses this worldwide movement on the bases of extensive field research conducted since 1999.

Alter-Globalization provides a comprehensive account of these critical global forces and their attempts to answer one of the major challenges of our time: How can citizens and civil society contribute to the building of a fairer, sustainable and more democratic co-existence of human beings in a global world?

Review
"The question of how we can change the world cannot easily be answered, but Geoffrey Pleyers has shown masterfully in this beautifully written and finely researched book that the way we now imagine those answers in changing, in part because of the way the alter-globalization movement has altered our understanding of ourselves as global citizens."
Henrietta L. Moore, Archives of European Sociology

"What is missing from much of today's media coverage of the Occupy Wall Street movement and related international struggles against corporate globalization and Western imperialism is the question of where these movements have come from and why they've all emerged at this particular time. Geoffrey Pleyer's book makes an important contribution to addressing the prehistory of the Occupy protests, and it can inform those participating in these struggles as well as students and scholars of social movements."
Jackie Smith, Mobilization

"Pleyers reconsructs the 'grammar' of the movement beyond the habitual dichotomies of reform/revolution, action/structure, unity/heterogenity, and instead seeks to value the diversity of the movement through the social meanings shared by the actors that compose the alter-globalization movement in its struggle against neoliberal ideology."
International Sociology

"An impressive book that demonstrates the differences of opinion over what a transnational movement like the alter-globalisation movement shoul do to change the world and what changing the world could look like."
Australian Journal of Political Science

"Provides an excellent overview of the main debates within the movement through a meticulously constructed research programme … [Pleyers'] thorough and balanced account of the development of alter-globalisation offers an immensely valuable resource for both researchers and activists."
Capital & Class

"Now that it looks as if neo-liberalism has run its course, the resulting cracks and fissures give breathing space to alternative movements and hybrid experiments. Pleyers' book opens up some vistas of these developments in the middle of a serious crisis, and does it from the ground up."
Contemporary Sociology

"The kind of book that students of the alter-globalisation movement have been waiting for years for … An indispensable read for anyone - students, academics, activists or politicians - who is looking for an elaborate and sophisticated discussion of some of the most crucial political issues of our time."
Journal of Democratic Socialism

"Utterly convincing and theoretically robust ... This kind of scholarship is what the alter-globalisation movement and indeed the world deserve."
Giuseppecaruso's Weblog

"This important book is the first scholarly account of the alter-globalisation movement. This highly original analysis of the way the movement is constructed around the tension between its two logics - subjective experience and expertise based on reason - helps us to understand not only the movement itself but also the role that the movement plays in inventing global citizenship."
Mary Kaldor, London School of Economics

"Pleyers has traveled the world to offer readers the most sweeping look yet at this crucial global movement, including how it has changed in the face of the recent crisis of the very capitalism it criticizes. By showing us a movement grappling continuously with the Pyramid Dilemma over top-down versus bottom-up approaches, this book helps us think about the most basic issues of democracy and social change."
James M. Jasper, City University of New York

"An outstanding example of contemporary sociological research that rises to the immense demands of a truly global ethnography. Pleyers' book is bound to become the definitive account by a contemporary of the alter-globalization movement. Because of its assured scholarship, easy familiarity with theoretical arguments and intimate experience of the social movement it describes this is going to be one of those rare research reports that immediately becomes a student required text and eventual classic."
Martin Albrow, London School of Economics, author of The Global Age

"Well-documented and relying on the most in-depth analyses. This book presents a movement both truly global and adapted to the economic context of each country and region. The main contribution of Geoffrey Pleyers, and what makes this book an indispensable tool, is that he clearly exposes the mixed strengths and weaknesses of a movement which was, and remains, a grassroots movement in which activists from poor countries occupy a place observed in no other movement."
Alain Touraine, Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Prince of the Asturias Award 2010

"This masterpiece will be the main reference for those who want to understand how the alter-globalization movement shapes today's world, how it modifies our perception of action, but also of democracy, and how this new actor articulates local and personal meanings with general concerns for the future of humanity. This study enables us to discover with precision the short, but real history, the aims, the functioning, the internal tensions, the hopes and the difficulties of the first real global movement."
Michel Wieviorka, President of the International Sociological Association 2006-2010, and Director of the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme, Paris

"The distinction between the way of subjectivity and the way reason that Geoffrey Pleyers proposes in his book clarifies the dynamics and some tensions that we experience in groups and assemblies of the 'Indignados' in Barcelona. It is a conceptual tool that has been of great help me in group facilitation and positive management of conflicts, both online and in assemblies as it allows overpassing tensions among positions that seem irreconcilable and developing an empathy based on mutual understanding."
David Leal Garcia, Indignado (15M) in Barcelona
