This thought-provoking, well-written book makes a passionate case for reforming global trade governance to do more to realise global social goods. The author asks an important question that needs more public debate: what do we need the WTO for? I hope the book will help stimulate such debate.

Complex Solutions to an Even More Complex Organization (Not for the feint of mind)

First off, THIS is a book/essay intended for academics and those already somewhat familiar with the material and NOT for the general audience. To me, a part-time educator with a master's degree in an unrelated field, I found Rorden Wilkinson's essay on the World Trade Organization to be highly complex, detailed, specialized, but comprehensive and otherwise well written. Wilkinson smartly includes a collection of abbreviation and chart guides in the front of the book for those of us who are interested in the subject but did not get our MBAs from an Ivy League institution. This helps a little bit but I still had to take active notes to keep my mind on the topic and my brain from exploding.
Overall, Wilkinson provides an excellent analysis, albeit somewhat biased and ignores some of the current movements/protests against the WTO, with some very difficult solutions given the inequality of economics that exist between nations. This was a challenging read but one I felt rewarding for completing.

Compact and well written

The World Trade Organization as a topic is a complex one with many angles to it. Not unsurprising considering its purpose and its scale. Author Rorden Wilkinson does a good job of bringing that scale into biteable sizes. Granted, he has a bias but he also supports his ideas about reforming the WTO. It is understood that we need a WTO but the one that we have isn't working effectively.
"What's Wrong with the WTO and How to Fix It" is a well-researched, well-written piece. As with most Polity book lines, I appreciated how it is kept at a slim, compact length of about 220 (includes indexing) and that the writer stays on topic with little to no fat. It is meant for those familiar with the subject, but it is also something that someone who is interested can also pick up to read.

Hard to comprehend thesis

Polity publishes academic books on rather interesting topics, and the World Trade Organization is quite an interesting topic. But there's a difference between academic work and work that is so complexly written as to be incoherent. I can grasp a thought here and there in this book, understanding that the WTO is not an equitable organization. The WTO favors industrialized nations and the pairing up never seems equal. Countries from Asia and other developing areas are on the rise and may unsettle the Western countries. While the author is not pushing for a change in powers among the nations, there doesn't seem to be a clear recommendation in how to fix the issues with the WTO. If there is a recommendation, it's hard to pull out of the language.
