The Polar Regions: An Environmental History, by Adrian Howkins

The environmental histories of the Arctic and Antarctica are characterised by contrast and contradiction. These are places that have witnessed some of the worst environmental degradation in recent history. But they are also the locations of some of the most farsighted measures of environmental protection. They are places where people have sought to conquer nature through exploration and economic development, but in many ways they remain wild and untamed. They are the coldest places on Earth, yet have come to occupy an important role in the science and politics of global warming.

Despite being located at opposite ends of the planet and being significantly different in many ways, Adrian Howkins argues that the environmental histories of the Arctic and Antarctica share much in common and have often been closely connected. This book also argues that the Polar Regions are strongly linked to the rest of the world, both through physical processes and through intellectual and political themes. As places of inherent contradiction, the Polar Regions have much to contribute to the way we think about environmental history and the environment more generally.

Review
"The Arctic and Antarctic are truly poles apart, but they share interesting concerns, which their very contrast helps illuminate.  By comparing their environmental histories, Adrian Howkins has brought them together in ways that everyone concerned with our shared Earth can appreciate. A valuable contribution to both polar studies and environmental history."
Stephen J. Pyne, Arizona State University

"Compelling portraits of the Arctic and Antarctic, past and present. A talented story-teller, Howkins offers a fast-paced journey to the ends of the Earth."
Ronald E. Doel, Florida State University

"The polar latitudes are among the final frontiers for environmental history.  Hawkins' book, as much history of science and exploration as environmental history, takes us on a most engaging tour to both Arctic and Antarctic."
J.R. McNeill, Georgetown University

Not a light read, but a good book for the more-than-casual reader.
By Wildness
Adrian Howkins' new book "The Polar Regions: An Environmental History" is not going to be everyone. I would say it falls somewhere between scholarly/academic and general audience. It is well researched and well presented, but a little on the dry side. The casual reader will find it hard to keep up with and it lacking in content the casual reader likes to see in a book like this... photos, illustrations, etc. But if you are really looking to dive into the topic of the polar regions and especially their environmental history, this book will deliver for you.

History of the Human Relationship to the Polar Regions: The Arctic and Antarctica.
By mirasreviews
Adrian Howkins’ environmental history of “The Polar Regions” takes an unusual approach, not only in considering both the Arctic and Antarctica together, but in examining the myths and perceptions of these polar regions held by Europeans as well as indigenous Arctic cultures and how they shaped the human relationships to these environments, including competing views espoused by early explorers. This is an environmental history, meaning the relationship of humans to the polar environments, not a climate history, though that subject is breeched in the last chapters. Howkins identifies himself as a “moderate environmentalist” late in the book, but for most of the history, he employs a neutral tone when speaking of human ambition, accomplishment, and folly in the polar regions.

But first, Howkins makes a case for discussing these two socially disparate regions together. Humans have inhabited the Arctic for thousands of years, while no one even sighted Antarctica until 1820. But both regions were sites of human economic pursuits in the 18th and 19th centuries, both subject to Cold War jockeying in the 20th century, and both the object of environmental concerns in the 21st century. Howkins’ first chapter looks at the myths that informed people’s perceptions of these remote places, going back as far as ancient Rome and Greece, through the Enlightenment that endeavored to replace myth with science, and even more modern myths, such as competing theories as to why the Norse colonies in Greenland failed in the 15th century.

From here the author tackles one topic per chapter, discussing its bearing on both polar regions. Some topics overlap by their nature. For example, there is discussion of explorers in the chapter on economic development, and whaling in the chapter on the Cold War, even though these topics have their own chapters. “Scarcity and Abundance: Marine Exploitation” examines sealing and whaling, from native Inuit sealing to the excesses of commercial sealing and conservation efforts that resulted, before moving on to commercial and modern whaling. A chapter on “Polar Exploration” doesn’t go into high adventure stories but includes the miscalculations that left so many dead and the successes that made Norwegian Roald Amundsen the preeminent polar explorer of his age.

Admundsen’s perspective on the polar regions is contrasted with that of polar “booster” Vilhjalmur Stefansson in the chapter on “Economic Development”. Stefansson made a career in the early 20th century by selling the idea of the Arctic as friendly and ripe for development. And develop people did, establishing bases or colonies where they could. The Cold War produced an interesting divergence between the polar regions, as the Arctic became a site of military escalation between Western powers and the Soviet Union, while Antarctica became a “continent dedicated to peace and science” upon the signing of the Antarctic Treaty in 1959, and commercial whaling effectively ended in the 1980s.

“Exploitation and Preservation: Environmental Conflict” looks at more recent controversies, such as the 1967 discovery of oil at Prudhoe Bay in Alaska that led to the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, and the contradictions of polar tourism, which represents exploitation and encourages preservation. In “The Polar Regions”, Adrian Howkins gives the reader an overview of the issues and attitudes concerning the human relationship with both the Arctic and Antarctica over the past few centuries. Remote, cold and apparently hostile to human needs, these regions have been the subject of much popular imagination and heroic and commercial ambition throughout the modern era.

An Academic Treatise
By L.W. Samuelson
This book contains some information I found interesting. The most important takeaway for me is the "anthropogenic feedback loop created in the Polar Regions as warming temperatures and melting ice make additional fossil fuel extraction possible, and as the burning of these fuels further increases temperature and melts polar ice." Howkins does a nice job of relaying the facts without injecting his own opinions and views, but, as a reader I want more than a bland, factual account.
When I finished reading The Polar Regions, I immediately checked to see if Adrain Howkins had ever visited the Arctic or the Antarctic. He has. Surely something an author has studied and visited and thought about would engender some passion and enthusiasm and some information he just had to share with the reader and yet this book is a dispassionate, sterile look at the polar regions. I think Howkins missed an opportunity by not describing the beauty of the poles, by not sharing some of the hardships the explorers faced in exploring these inhospitable regions through journal entries and other sources, and by not sharing some personal anecdotes about his own experiences on his visits to the poles. This leads me to believe that the audience for the book is other academics and not casual readers who are interested in our polar regions and that's okay, but don't buy this and expect to be entertained.

Personal Connections in the Digital Age, by Nancy K. Baym

The internet and the mobile phone have disrupted many of our conventional understandings of our selves and our relationships, raising anxieties and hopes about their effects on our lives. This timely and vibrant book provides frameworks for thinking critically about the roles of digital media in personal relationships. Rather than providing exuberant accounts or cautionary tales, it offers a data-grounded primer on how to make sense of these important changes in relational life.

The book identifies the core relational issues these media disturb and shows how the ways we talk about them echo historical discussions about earlier communication technologies. Chapters explore how we use mediated language and nonverbal behavior to develop and maintain communities, social networks, new relationships, and to maintain relationships in our everyday lives. It combines research findings with lively examples to address questions such as whether mediated interaction can be warm and personal, whether people are honest about themselves online, whether relationships that start online can work, and whether using these media damages the other relationships in our lives. Throughout, the book argues for approaching these questions with firm understandings of the qualities of media as well as the social and personal contexts in which they are developed and used.

Personal Connections in the Digital Age will be required reading for all students and scholars of media, communication studies, and sociology, as well as all those who want a firmer understanding of digital media and everyday life.

Review
"Combining in-depth knowledge of the topic based on decades of Baym's own and others' research with a clear, concise and straightforward writing style that makes it a joy to read, this is the kind of accessible book that many academics would love to have written."
Times Higher Education

"Lively and thought-provoking throughout, this book challenges the myth that ‘cyberspace' dramatically transforms personal connections by revealing, instead, the complex and subtle ways in which people manage social interaction online and offline in response to the affordances of the various modes of communication available."
Sonia Livingstone, London School of Economics and author of Children and the Internet

"Something is happening. Do you know what it is? Nancy Baym does, with a book bristling with ideas and authority. Filled with clear, lively writing, she both surveys and advances the field. I learned so much."
Barry Wellman, University of Toronto

"Baym provides us a clear, concise, and thought-provoking discussion of the role of new digital media our interpersonal and societal relationships. She creates a welcome blend of her own and others' research, the affordances and capabilities of new media, historical and technical contexts of the telegraph through the Internet, stable as well as changing societal norms, and her own Internet experiences."
Ronald E. Rice, University of California, Santa Barbara

Timely, Relevant Text - Highly Recommended
By CMC Professor
At this point, the textbooks that cover technology-mediated communication are sparse, despite having quite a robust research presence. This book, which I just used for my course in technology and communication, is excellent. Baym conceptualizes the work in technology-mediated communication in a clear, easy to read fashion. I feel in no way this text is "over the heads" of undergraduates. At this point, I believe this text is the only viable undergraduate text in the subject area (although I am going to try my hand at it too). I feel this book would help advanced learners, such as practitioners and graduate students, as well. Really an exceptional work that fills a HUGE gap. Highly recommended.

Clear, Readable and Reasonable
By Amazon Customer
While Baym's work is highly academic, strongly grounded in theory, and chockfull of references to important works from a broad range of cultures (Finnish cell phone use? Politics of friending on Korean social networks?), above all, it's readable. I literally couldn't put it down, and I'll definitely want to use it as a text for undergraduates and graduate students alike.

Baym is ever-reasonable, balanced, personable, striking that fine balance of authorial presence between a phony and stilted objectivity and "TMI." Every concept she introduces is fairly, clearly presented, whether she agrees with it or not.

If you're looking for a good scholarly introduction to new media, or an STS work in media studies, or just an example of academic writing at its best, this is the book.

Identity, Connections and Technology
By Alicia Crumpton
If you like Sherry Turkle, you will like Baym's contribution to the conversation about identity, connections, and technology. This is an excellent addition to this conversation! Six chapters cover the following:

* New forms of personal connection - Baym organizes her discussion into seven key concepts to compare "different media to one another as well as to face to face communication. . . interactivity, temporal structure, social cues, social cues, storage, replicability, reach, and mobility" (p. 7).

* Making new media make sense - A continuum of perspectives are explored: Technological determinism (machines change us), social construction of technology (people have the power), and social shaping (middle ground - "the social capabilities technological qualities enable - and the unexpected and emergent ways that people make use of those affordances" (p. 44).

* Communication in digital spaces - "Mediated interaction should be seen as a new and eclectic mixed modality that combines elements of f2f communication with elements of writing, rather than as a diminished form of embodied interaction" (p. 51).

* Communities and networks - Baym explored how people organize into groups online, meanings of 'community' and social networks.

* New Relationships - Baym asked, "what forces shape people's online self-presentations and whether they are more likely to be honest or deceptive. . . authenticity. . . " (p. 100).

* Digital media in relational development and Maintenance - Where does digital media fit into communication and relationships?

American Democracy: From Tocqueville to Town Halls to Twitter (Political Sociology), by Andrew J. Perrin

In this groundbreaking book, sociologist Andrew Perrin shows that rules and institutions, while important, are not the core of democracy. Instead, as Alexis de Tocqueville showed in the early years of the American republic, democracy is first and foremost a matter of culture: the shared ideas, practices, and technologies that help individuals combine into publics and achieve representation. Reinterpreting democracy as culture reveals the ways the media, public opinion polling, and changing technologies shape democracy and citizenship. As Perrin shows, the founders of the United States produced a social, cultural, and legal environment fertile for democratic development and in the two centuries since, citizens and publics use that environment and shared culture to re-imagine and extend that democracy.

American Democracy provides a fresh, innovative approach to democracy that will change the way readers understand their roles as citizens and participants. Never will you enter a voting booth or answer a poll again without realizing what a truly social act it is. This will be necessary reading for scholars, students, and the public seeking to understand the challenges and opportunities for democratic citizenship from Toqueville to town halls to Twitter.

Review

''Written with uncommon imagination, this beautifully-realized book challenges too narrow a focus on formal institutions and the electoral process. Written in the spirit of Tocqueville as a sociology of democracy and of Habermas as a probe of the public realm, it deepens our understanding of the foundations of democratic culture, including civic values and the patterns of communication, association, and action that give shape and meaning to democratic citizenship.''
Ira Katznelson, Columbia University

''In this bold reconceptualization of American democracy, Andrew Perrin introduces what he correctly calls a new sociology of publics. Perrin draws our attention to the dynamism inherent in American democracy by showing how democracy is learned and practiced as citizens interact with institutions. An important contribution that will inspire fresh thinking about what sustains democratic practice in the United States and how it might be re-energized.''
Margaret Weir, University of California Berkeley

Fresh thinking on the meaning and practice of American democracy
By Malvin
"American Democracy" by Andrew J. Perrin offers a valuable, sociological perspective on an oftentimes fractious and perplexing subject. Dr. Perrin is an associate professor who, it would seem, intends this book to serve as a teaching tool or undergraduate textbook. No doubt, this insightful and well-written book will interest students and others who value fresh thinking on the meaning and practice of American democracy.

Dr. Perrin contends that culture is far more important than process. Dr. Perrin takes the long view to make his case. From the American Revolution, the Civil War, the Progressive Era, the 1960s to today; Dr. Perrin sums up American history as a fractious yet steady course towards increased access to political life. Drawing inspiration from Tocqueville, Dr. Perrin asserts that Americans have continuously found new ways to associate and find solutions to their challenges over the course of the nation's history.

I found Dr. Perrin's thoughts on the unintended consequences of various sorts of technical reforms to be enlightening. For example, Dr. Perrin discusses how the secret ballot succeeded in helping protect the voices of the vulnerable, such as women and minorities, from intimidation. Yet, the secret ballot has also isolated voters and hence has been a factor in transforming citizens to consumers. In a similar fashion, Dr. Perrin muses about the pros and cons of the electoral college, term limits, redistricting, campaign finance and so on. Dr. Perrin's point is to remind us that technical changes are often flawed but are insufficient by themselves to ensure a healthy and vital democracy.

What matters far more, Dr. Perrin asserts, is dialogue, participation and engagement. In fact, Dr. Perrin prefers an "agonistic" style of discourse where opponents debate politics in a vigorous, passionate and respectful manner; as compared with passivity. On that point, Dr. Perrin worries that the corporate media has become problematic as concentration of ownership has narrowed the number of diverse viewpoints that are necessary to sustain a robust and productive public dialogue.

At times, one might wish for Dr. Perrin to drop his tortuous, even-handed academic tone to engage in a sharper critique. Dr. Perrin is loathe to name the specific media channels that are responsible for engaging in well-documented distortions of fact, misinformation and propaganda; with the effect of pushing public debate to the Right and dismissing alternatives to corporate power. However, Dr. Perrin can be commended for his success in allowing us to take the longer view of American history. Through Dr. Perrin's scholarship, we become hopeful that today's challenges will be resolved in creative ways that perhaps many of us can not yet envision; but may soon become visible as we remain committed to the struggle.

I highly recommend this book to everyone.

Democracy From A Sociologist's Point Of View
By Falkor
In his new book sociology professor Andrew Perrin suggests that American democracy is more a function of shared cultural practices and traditions than documents and laws. The book includes six well rendered, insightful chapters that examine: "History and Theory of Democracy," "Voting, Civil Society and Citizenship," "Deliberation, Representation and Legislation," "Public Opinion, Policy Responsiveness, and Feedback," "Media, Communications, and Political Knowledge" and Democratic Culture and Practice in Postmodern America". A smart, literate, and surprisingly gentle meditation on American democracy
By ML
Andrew J. Perrin's historical and contemporary tour of "American Democracy" is smart, literate, and surprisingly gentle in spirit. At the core of the book is the argument that democracy is not a set of institutions, rules, and standards, but a culture -- a set of values, ideas, commitments, and practices. It's not that institutions don't matter; of course they do. But, as dictators around the world have repeatedly shown us -- and as countries with no inclination to accommodate minority views and populations have also shown us -- democratic machinery is no guarantee that the people have a voice or that it is heard. Perrin argues that, while it's never been anywhere close to perfect, America's democratic culture is strong. The main threats to democracy are not incivility -- which he argues is sometimes necessary and always better than silence -- or political polarization -- which he sees as overstated -- but rather the Balkanizing and privatizing nature of contemporary media. On one hand, it is much easier to speak only with and hear from only people that one agrees with than it had been in the past. This leads not only to skewed views of the world, but also dehumanization of the opposition. On the other hand, cell phones, blogs, instagram, etc., train us to think about ourselves and our immediate circle, taking us out of the common, collective life of the polity.

There's plenty of food for thought here, and it should be digestible by anyone with an interest and a high school diploma. Perrin thinks in terms of multiple, overlapping publics. Publics are formed from people who, through some series of events, come to share political interests. Because people have a variety of different political interests -- e.g., as students, as renters, as immigrants, as racial/ethnic minorities, etc. -- they may belong to multiple publics. When it comes to democracy, Perrin argues, it is not only the case that the interests of different publics will clash, but that they must clash openly and fully express their disagreements. Democracy is inherently agonistic, he says -- we only have democracy when everyone can use their voice openly and honestly. Being polite is optional, and even being factually correct is also optional (a point that many religious fact-checkers will find appalling), but being honest and open is not optional.

Perrin devotes most of a chapter to the history of opinion polling, focusing on how alien it once seemed, and how it is now a core part of the political process. He explains how, far from simply measuring already-existing well-formed opinions, polling actually leads people to creatively construct opinions they didn't know they had. And he also rebukes many of the critics who see this a damning fact, and explains why it's not necessarily a bad thing.

The biggest weakness of the book is that, while acknowledging corporate and individual wealth and power, Perrin essentially brackets them out of the conversation. He acknowledges that money is an issue, and he argues against reforms that he believes will increase the influence of money in the political process. He acknowledges that media messages influence people, and he acknowledges that the media are owned by large corporations, but he as much as says that if corporations and the wealthy can convince people to hold specific opinions and vote a particular way, then, well, that's democracy. This may not say much to a non-sociologist, but Marx and Weber get one mention each, on adjacent pages, and Durkheim fares little better. Where's the domination, Dr. Perrin?

Even if he paints too pretty a picture, Perrin's story about American democracy is an interesting one, and his ideas about agonism and civility, about the collective nature of individual political opinions, and about democratic institutions vs. democratic culture are all going to be with me every time I think about the nature of democracy. It may be slow reading for some (it was for me), but the writing is good, and the content is widely accessible. Recommended.

Review
"This book promises to be required reading for students of organizational communication. No one is better suited than Vince Waldron to provide a state-of-the-art explanation of this important set of issues."
Ted Zorn, University of Waikato, New Zealand

"This book offers a rich tapestry of the emotional fabric of organizational life. Drawing on recent research, it situates emotional communication as an essential feature of occupational roles, work relationships, and moral judgment. Its superb examples entice the reader through sharing the joys and traumas of the modern workplace."
Linda L. Putnam, University of California, Santa Barbara

"As someone who has studied and taught about emotions in organizations for many years, I have been consistently disappointed that most books gloss over communication when exploring the issues of work and feelings. Well, I am no longer disappointed! Vince Waldron's book Communicating Emotion at Work presents a thoughtful and meaningful treatment of how emotions, communication, and work intersect to complicate work life in recognized and unrecognized ways. Waldron also goes beyond looking solely at individual-level communication by exploring the organizational, societal, and global factors impacting communication and emotion in organizations. If you're a serious scholar of emotions and communication at work, this book is a key resource you must have on your shelf. Bravo!"
Professor Pam Lutgen-Sandvik, University of New Mexico, USA

"A thorough and thoroughly engaging read, Communicating Emotion at Work provides an up-to-date overview of the complex role of emotion in the workplace. The cases and illustrations, along with the author's accessible writing style, make this an ideal book for undergraduate and advanced undergraduate classes. It is also a ‘must have' for practitioners and scholars interested in the topic."
Patricia Sias, Washington State University

Population and Society: An Introduction, by Gregg Lee Carter

This exciting new book presents the field of social demography, animating the study of population with a vibrant sociological imagination. Gregg Lee Carter provides multiple demonstrations of how taking a demographic perspective can give us a better understanding of social phenomena once thought to be largely the products of culture, politics, or the economy.

Five key chapters concentrate on (1) the social and individual determinants of fertility, mortality, and migration; (2) the social and individual impacts of changing levels of fertility, mortality, and migration; and (3) the impacts of overpopulation on the environment, and how changes in the environment, in turn, impact the human condition, especially regarding migration. What gives these analyses coherence is how each emphasizes the ways in which demographic forces both reflect and limit individual choices.

Written in a straightforward and engaging style, and without getting bogged down in academic debates, this concise book is the ideal introduction and primer for courses in social demography and population and society.

William H. Frey, The Brookings Institution

“Carter offers a comprehensive yet concise overview of the major concepts, theories, and data sources in the fields of classic and social demography. Written in an accessible style and leveraging the most recent data from countries around the world, the book highlights the salience of the demographic perspective in understanding all contemporary social problems and provides multiple examples of how demographic forces both reflect and constrain individual choices.”
Shannon Monnat, Pennsylvania State University

“Population and Society does an outstanding job of bringing to life demographic processes such as fertility, mortality, and migration by illustrating their impact using a range of student-engaging, in-depth examples and easy-to-understand data. The book applies demographic events to a range of critical social issues, from environmental degradation, overpopulation, and gender inequality, to the everyday choices we make in our own lives. Emotion (Key Concepts in Philosophy), by Carolyn Price

Emotion is at the centre of our personal and social lives. To love or to hate, to be frightened or grateful is not just a matter of how we feel on the inside: our emotional responses direct our thoughts and actions, unleash our imaginations, and structure our relationships with others. Yet the role of emotion in human life has long been disputed. Is emotion reason?s friend or its foe? From where do the emotions really arise? Why do we need them at all?

In this accessible and carefully argued introduction, Carolyn Price focuses on some central questions about the nature and function of emotion. She explores the ways in which emotion contrasts with belief and considers how our emotional responses relate to our values, our likes and our needs. And she investigates some of the different ways in which emotional responses can be judged as fitting or misplaced, rational or irrational, authentic or inauthentic, sentimental or profound. Throughout, she develops a particular view of emotion as a complex and diverse phenomenon, which reflects both our common evolutionary past and our different cultural and personal histories.

Engagingly written with lots of examples to illuminate our understanding, this book provides the ideal introduction to the topic for students and scholars and anyone interested in delving further into the intricate web of human emotion.

Review

"In this short book Carolyn Price elegantly condenses a sophisticated understanding of the philosophy of emotion into eight very readable chapters. While offering a novel explanation and defence of a functionalist, teleosemantic position, the book also situates this position clearly and fairly in wider philosophical debates about emotion. As such, Price's measured assessments of alternative positions also offer an excellent introduction to readers who are new to this important and emerging topic. The book will be stimulating reading for students and researchers alike."
Christopher Bennett, University of Sheffield

"This is a splendid book: clearly written, empirically informed, philosophically astute, and a pleasure to read. It contains a wealth of good arguments, and makes interesting and original points on all of the central issues in the philosophy of emotion. Highly recommended."
Michael Brady, University of Glasgow

Carolyn Price is a lecturer at the Open University. She joined the department in February 2000, having spent eight years as a Lecturer and Tutor at St Hugh's College, Oxford. Intimate Politics: Publicity, Privacy and the Personal Lives of Politicians in Media Saturated Democracies (Contemporary Political Communic

It is often remarked that politicians’ private lives are becoming a feature of political communication in many advanced industrial democracies. However, there have so far been no genuinely comparative studies examining the personalized nature of political communication. Intimate Politics provides for the first time a systematic comparative analysis of such developments in Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK and the US. Drawing on a wide range of primary and secondary sources, it assesses the extent to which the private lives of politicians have become a feature of political communication in each democracy. The book provides a comprehensive account of the shifting boundaries between the public and private, and whether any developments are universal or more advanced in some democracies than others, and seeks to explain why this might be. Intimate Politics will be of great value for students and scholars of communication and media studies and political science and is required reading for anyone who wants a fuller understanding of the transformation of mediated politics in advanced industrial democracies.

OK, But Misses the Point
By not a natural
James Stayner's Intimate Politics has a suggestively lurid cover that could easily mislead prospective readers as to the nature of his book. Intimate Politics is definitely not written for the broadly intelligent casual reader, whether or not he or she is looking for something sensational. Instead, this book is an exercise in determinedly rigorous scholarship aimed at understanding variability in journalistic coverage of both innocuous and salacious personal characteristics of political figures in the U.S., the U.K., France, Italy, Spain, Germany, and Australia. The author's C.V., posted elsewhere on line, makes clear that, so far, he has based his academic career largely on research regarding what he refers to as the "intimization" of politics from one nation to another.

As a result, he is able to present detailed accounts of ways in which journalistic political discourse has reduced politics to the personal traits and private behavior of conspicuously political people in those nations with which he is familiar. Stayner writes well, and some of his accounts, including the sexual misadventures of Bill Clinton, Jean Sarkozy, and Gerhard Schroeder are on point and reasonably interesting. The same is emphatically true of his brief coverage of Angela Merkel's temperate and intelligent response to tabloid photo-journalists' execrable intrusion into her perfectly innocent down-time, when she was just trying to relax and get some exercise to help deal with her high-stress job.

Snyder's use of simple descriptive statistics and graphs is, for the most part, informative. It does, however, inadvertently call attention to the fact that his efforts to understand the distribution of the "intimization" or personalization of political life, while aimed at identifying relationships of universal applicability, are based on only seven cases, the nations listed above. Inevitably, given so few cases, Stayner's quantitative displays have a much-to-do-about-very-little appearance, something that makes it a bit harder to take his work as seriously as he intends it to be.

Furthermore, one can only wonder if Stayner's work would have any relevance in important but socially and culturally very different countries such as China, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Japan. Understandably, Stayner's cases were selected on the basis of convenience and the strengths and limitations of his own knowledge and research done by others. Issues of this kind are especially important with regard to the value of Stayner's causal models, in which he uses a relatively new, not widely understood statistical technique called Fuzzy set Qualitative Causal Analysis with a small collection of of more of less plausible independent variables to gauge levels of political "intimization" from one of seven nations to another.

It is at this point that the primary conceptual limitations of Stayner's research become evident. His explanation of "intimizaton" is, I think, premised on the accurate judgment that the politics of personality is inconsistent with the development of a political system that meets real needs, thus his references to the work of Richard Sennett and Hannah Arendt. However, he never explains why this might be the case, and how this might modify his selection of explanatory variables in his fuzzy set-based causal models.

It seems to me that we live in an age when political issues, whatever their nature or relative importance, are poorly understood or not understood at all, and the politics of personality has been given pride of place. Rather than limit his work to the cross-national comparative importance of "intimization," Stayner would do well to focus on nation-to-nation variability in the recognized importance of substantive issues, matters of health and well-being, life and death, construction or degradation, issues that make our lives better or worse rather than more or less titillating. Issues such as these are certainly measurable, though perhaps not as easily as the explanatory variables that Stayner uses, but once measured they could be readily inserted into his causal models.

As things stand, Stayner has given us some understanding of why politics is more or less personal or "intimized" in some places rather than in others. His work would be a lot more valuable, however, if he were able to explain why a TV-friendly personality, a pretty face, or a tough guy persona have become more important than demonstrated efficacy in dealing with important issues. That sort of information would help immensely in making politics once again a useful enterprise rather than an increasingly tiresome spectator sport.

Written for scholars
By Connie
James Stanyer's heavy research and analysis in this book make this book a very socio-scientific book to read. It's more vastly informative than it is entertaining and can be dry at times. For people interested in the power of the media, though, this is a worthwhile read.

The primary countries used are western European countries, where democratic societies rule and public access is open. The United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, France, Italy, Spain and the United States are the primary countries profiled, countries in which the yellow press still likes to sell papers by revealing the most intimate or shocking disclosures of its politicians. Issues that seem to spark scandal are marital infidelities (which started in the early 1970s) and homosexual orientation. Interesting to note is the degree to which the European press delves into the private lives of its leaders. In Europe one's privacy is still very sacred and invasion of privacy a much more heinous crime than the infidelity or homosexual act itself. Another note is the depth of the scandal depends on the competitive market of the tabloid press: the more tabloid papers there are in any market, the more the press will delve into the privacy of its leaders. The United States and the United Kingdom seem to have similar inquisitive media while the other countries profiled tend to back off a bit more.

The second chapter, "Digging for Dirt," summarizes the research. The US press seems fixated on revealing infidelities much more than any other country, revealing our stuffy Puritan heritage Catholic countries, with their taboo on divorce, are much more accepting of marital infidelities than Protestant countries. How much is revealed of a politician's intimate life also depends on the extent of each country's legal privacy protection.

There are other avenues that Stanyer broaches. Some of the insights are revealing, others go into greater detail. What the final result is then is a scholarly book on the socio-political make-up of these European countries with the US and Australia. There are lots of graphs and citations for more depth.

Intimate Politics: All Democracies are not Created Equal
By Michael Griswold
It is often remarked that politicians' private lives are becoming a feature of political communication in many advanced industrial democracies.

What James Stanyer attempts to do in Intimate Politics is a comparative study of seven industrial democracies: The U.S., UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Australia to determine the extent that politicians personal lives have become a part of political communication. Without giving too much away, not all democracies are created equal. Some democracies have made politicians personal lives fair game, while other democracies still fiercely guard them, though this distinction is under question.

Stanyer's findings are quite interesting as his answers range from personal factors about individual candidates, political parties, laws on privacy and journalistic norms among others. Stanyer in a relatively brief study (170 pages) is able to produce a series of conclusions that are both easily understood and thought provoking. It is written with the rigor of an academic study, but there's nothing that should be overly intimidating to the non-academic reader considering purchasing this book.

A new and important entry into the literature on democratic politics and the media that should be read by the masses.

Beyond the Two-State Solution: A Jewish Political Essay, by Yehouda Shenhav

For over two decades, many liberals in Israel have attempted, with wide international support, to implement the two-state solution: Israel and Palestine, partitioned on the basis of the Green Line - that is, the line drawn by the 1949 Armistice Agreements that defined Israel’s borders until 1967, before Israel occupied the West Bank and Gaza following the Six-Day War. By going back to Israel’s pre-1967 borders, many people hope to restore Israel to what they imagine was its pristine, pre-occupation character and to provide a solid basis for a long-term solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In this original and controversial essay, Yehouda Shenhav argues that this vision is an illusion that ignores historical realities and offers no long-term solution. It fails to see that the real problem is that a state was created in most of Palestine in 1948 in which Jews are the privileged ethnic group, at the expense of the Palestinians - who also must live under a constant state of emergency. The issue will not be resolved by the two-state solution, which will do little for the millions of Palestinian refugees and will also require the uprooting of hundreds of thousands of Jews living across the Green Line. All these obstacles require a bolder rethinking of the issues: the Green Line should be abandoned and a new type of polity created on the complete territory of mandatory Palestine, with a new set of constitutional arrangements that address the rights of both Palestinians and Jews, including the settlers.

Review

"America's renewed push to save the two-state solution is going nowhere fast. We need a new paradigm - and Shenhav’s analysis is one of the best places we can start. It has profound implications for how we think of solving the Israel/Palestine conflict."
Mondoweiss

"Poses interesting historical insights and assessments of present-day Israel."
Morning Star

"Offers a meaningful critique to the ideology that the state has become undemocratic only because of the Six Day War."
Jerusalem Post

"Finding it timely and noteworthy for its original insights into Israeli society, Palestinians in Ramallah promptly translated into Arabic this political commentary on the precarious state in which Israel finds itself. This updated version now appearing in English promises to further widen the circle of those who are beginning to realize that relevant political paradigms have undergone radical change, that a classical two-state solution to the conflict is a fantasy (and perhaps always has been), and that new realities require new ideas. This work certainly belongs to a new genre of writing on the conflict."
Sari Nuseibeh, Al-Quds University

"Yehouda Shenhav makes an unusual and unsettling argument ... what appears on its face a 'progressive' position on the question of Israel and Palestine, is in fact censorial and duplicitous. The Israeli left's sanctimonious insistence in the face of the Jewish settlers of the West Bank that the settlements were illegal and that the proper borders of Israel are those of 1967, is nothing short of an ideological manoeuver. The purpose of the manoeuver is to obfuscate the fact that Israel itself is nothing short of a huge settlement project that was founded upon the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians and the systematic expropriation of the land they left behind."

Inadequate consideration of all relevant factors
By Jerome Blaz
I find his writing to be adequate, but his logic to be one-sided. He did not take incto consideration all the key factors needed to be considered to make a convincing argument, but by not including them, it gave his claims an appearance of being reasonable. I do not want to attempt to engage the writings in a polemic, but to further describe this book might just entice me to do so.

An Honest Restoration of History as a First Step
By David Swanson
Fast forward to 2048. The world is greatly changed, and in this year China invades France, occupying Paris and a good portion of the nation. The French are massacred, evicted, raped, chased, and terrorized. Towns are destroyed. Every town and village has its name changed to a Chinese name, and its prior existence erased from any history books produced from then forward.

Portions of France not yet under Chinese control shelter refugees by the millions. French citizens captured in their homes are held as "prisoners of war" and freed to become refugees in distant parts of France. China changes the name of its occupied areas from France to Chance. The remaining parts of the country are just referred to by their local (Chinese) names, as if they were part of no nation at all and yet somehow Chinese in the end.

For years, the Chancian government continues to expand and to assault the French people. With more and more immigrants from China, Chance becomes an apartheid nation with lesser rights for any French within it. In 2067, Chance launches a major assault, seizing control of much of what's left of France. The newly seized areas come to be called "the occupied territories," in contrast to the already occupied territories, which are called simply Chance.

As the years pass, Chancian children are born and raised in Chance who had nothing to do with the original invasion. In fact, they are never even told about it. At most they are taught that Chance was founded in 2048 when the French voluntarily left and the true border of the Chancian nation was drawn on a map with a purple line. That purple line is also called "the line of 2067," even though it was drawn in 2048. Outside of that purple line are the occupied territories and the few towns and villages left to the French.

Liberals in Chance propose giving "the occupied territories" back to the French and restoring the Purple Line, while conservatives propose eliminating the last French descendant from Europe. Those are the extremes of the political debate in Chance. Everything within the Purple Line is universally agreed upon as properly Chancian. The agreement runs so deep that the question is never raised at all. The original sin in Chancian history is dated to 2067 when the Chancian democracy strayed outside its natural borders and violated the rights of others for the first time.

But, of course, Chancian families are raised through the years outside as well as inside the Purple Line, a line that had never been agreed to in any way by the French, a line that would deny many of them the right to return to their homes.

The French want reparations and restoration. They date the catastrophe of their nation to 2048. The Chancians are willing to talk about undoing anything they've done since 2067, including through the creation of a French nation. The French nation would include several geographically separated bits of territory in northern and southern parts of the former France. It would remain subject to the rule of Chance on major questions. And the new France would have to agree to the rightful existence of Chance inside the Purple Line -- or the Purple Line plus a little.

So, a lengthy and seemingly endless process is created called the Peace Process. The French show up wanting to talk about 2048. The Chancians show up willing to talk only about 2067. The two sides never hear each other. There is never any peace. The Chancians announce at the end of each failed meeting that they "have no partner" with which to negotiate peace. Hostilities and a permanent state of emergency prevail, with French people within Chance and Chance's "occupied territories" deprived of basic rights, imprisoned, tortured, and assaulted. The other nations of Europe join with the French in resenting the behavior of Chance. The nations of Asia, however, celebrate Chance as "the only democracy in Europe."

***

There are several differences between this story and the story of Israel and Palestine. Some of the differences are trivial: The dates are 1948 and 1967, not 2048 and 2067. The line is green rather than purple. Some of the differences are significant: The Jewish culture always had ties to Israel. The religious element allows for an intermediary class of citizens consisting of Arab Jews. Et cetera.

But morally, the differences seem only to obscure what matters. The state of Israel was created through ethnic cleansing. It was created as a state to privilege one religious group, something that states should not do. But two wrongs cannot make a right. Evicting Israelis from their homes, inside or outside the Green Line, is not a solution.

Yehouda Shenhav's new book, "Beyond the Two State Solution: A Jewish Political Essay" tells the story above, but straightforwardly, without the analogy. The language of the Green Line, Shenhav writes, is "a language through which Israel is described as a liberal democracy, while the Arabs (and Mizrachi and religious Jews to boot) are described as inferior and undemocratic. This is the language of someone who came to the Middle East for a short while, not to integrate but to exist here as a guest. The position it expresses is not only immoral with regard to the Palestinians, but also potentially disastrous for the Jews. It commits them to life in a ghetto with a limited idea of democracy based on racial laws and a perpetual state of emergency."

Shenhav wants to restore awareness of 1948, but not to try to reconstruct the world of 1948. He does not propose eliminating Israel. He does not propose uniting the people of Israel and Palestine into a single nation.

He does propose allowing Palestinians to return to their homes in a manner least disturbing to Israelis already living in those villages or buildings, including with compensation paid to residents evicted by an agreement with returning refugees. He proposes a bilingual society, with a fragmented political federation. He expects this to be very difficult, while preferable to any other approach. And he rightly sees the first step as recovering honesty with regards to not-so-distant history.

A welcome look at the situation
By Joseph Oppenheim
What is good about this book is that it does look at 1948, rather than 1967 as the better place to look for an eventual peace agreement. As such, he proposes a way to re-integrate some of the originally disenfranchised Palestinian families into a remaining state of Israel. So, definitely more agreeable to Jews and Israelis than most Palestinians, especially those who only want a one state solution. So, a welcome addition to the discussion, but likely to go no where until the Palestinians come up with some peace deals which most Palestinians want.....then Israel can respond to those. I'd be interested in a response to this book by some Palestinian leaders who want a peace deal.
