Essential Reading for Mass Comm Scholars

Maxwell McCombs is one of the founding fathers of agenda-setting, arguably one of the most important home-grown theories of mass media influence. In addition to providing a comprehensive and thoughtful synthesis of agenda research to date, this book sets the agenda for future researchers.

As Dietram Scheufele wrote in his Mass Communication and Society review, "other researchers will find this book a good starting point for their own work, and certainly an excellent compendium of what could be labeled the "Austin-Texas School" of agenda-setting research." I highly recommend it.

Agenda-Setting 101

This book is an essential read for anyone interested in understanding Agenda Setting. Max McCombs does an excellent job describing the basics, building a comprehensive and progressive model describing the effects of agenda-setting based on several studies of media and public agenda. It sets the ground rules for more advanced reads and gives you a very clear perspective of the very broad possibilities that this field offers.

A Surgeon's Guide to Dissecting the American Mind

Setting the Agenda: The Mass Media and Public Opinion, is just what it states. Before we looked at Public Relations via Edward Bernays and Walter Lippman, to name just two, we knew it as Propaganda.
Politics, which differs from Government, figures prominently in this book. For obvious reasons swaying public opinion is vital in lining up populations in groups and directing their behavior rather than being directed.
It is difficult to stay objective about mass manipulation since it implies secrecy and misdirection.
But, that's the world we live in and the less people think for themselves the more they want to be led.
Enter agenda setting.
Lippman is used fairly often in describing how important it is to place images in the people's minds. The more lurid the better, for they've got sticking power. They describe how in 1968 political victories are won not in issues 1/3, but in 'information' on the candidates and their strategy. In other words, the media was able to insert itself between candidate and public by creating 'stories' about the how the candidate 'felt' and what his intentions were.
And we know what sides the media usually will take, but that's part of the problem left out.
While the study of expanded agenda setting in schools and religion is mentioned, the exploration of that alone would take volumes, and most certainly exist.
The reason I did give it 5 stars isn't because I agree with these tactics, but that the public needs to be aware of how advanced and precise the use of public relations has become. The images in our minds have been placed there patiently and carefully.
On a positive side, Cognitive Mapping provide everyone a similar lay of the land. It enables right and left to leverage the general vision of the people, (or lack thereof). Either way, the battle for hearts and minds that began in earnest a hundred years ago has progressed further than any other field of medicine.

No moral center

For more than a decade now, I have regarded my own profession, shamefaced, given the bulk of practitioners demonstrating dereliction in their duty. The problem is the dearth of facts in their reportage, and the lack of objectivity and balance.

For a grotesque example, consider the 2008 presidential campaign, and compare the intense, outsized scrutiny given to reviled Republican Sarah Palin, whom the mainstream press rendered Public Enemy Number One, to complete cover-up in the form of fawning, mewling admiration that granted celebrity status and stardom to the underdog favorite who, as a result, soon occupied the White House and still does.

What Sarah Palin's daughter ate for breakfast grew more controversial, as it were, than the unquestioning presence of one Barack Obama every Sunday for more than 20 years in the pews of a church lead by a hate-spewing "pastor" named Jeremiah Wright, much less Obama's longtime tutelage under the FBI's Most Closely Watched Communist Frank Marshall Davis, or his comradeship with wanna-be terrorist Bernardine Dohrn and her Weather Underground husband, co-founder and bomb-building revolutionary Bill Ayers, who suggested to the New York Times on Sept. 10, 2001 that he and his pals should have built more bombs and killed more people. It would now appear that Ayers was even Obama's ghostwriter.

So no, the problem of journalism is not that the Internet provides an opinion forum, with the loudest, extreme opinions garnering the most attention. The problem is that so-called "journalists" choose sides and do everything possible to ensure that the winners are those for whom they prefer to cheer loudest.

This mess began to take shape long before before the Internet became routine. Decades ago, opinions began to replace facts, front and center and "above the fold" on newspaper front pages.

Once upon a time, any front page column that included opinion was clearly labeled "news analysis," sort of like the warning label on cigarette packs. Such stories opened with leads far beyond the standard, who, what, when, where and why, and sometimes how. They stacked information knee-deep, albeit skewed but at least labeled as such.

Then the "news analysis" labels went by the boards all together, and virtually all objectivity got chucked out with it. Worse was the total loss of balance. Editors no longer insisted upon a response, or at least an attempt to get one, from targets of increasingly crass political criticism.

We could separate facts from fiction if only journalists themselves still knew the difference, but newsrooms have been steeped in political correctness for so long that a giant fog has descended and clouded the few brains still left sitting at the desks.

Partisan writing rules the news, and most of the mainstream press is dominated by what editors like to call "liberal" thinking. Truth to tell, there is nothing liberal about telling the public what they are supposed to think, with no attempt whatever to provide balance or perspective or encourage careful consideration of all points of view.

The result is that our democracy, a three-legged stool involving the public, government and press, has lost a leg and collapsed.

This book addresses only the commercial side of things, the loss of ad revenues as classifieds, once the primary source of newspaper revenues, migrated from expensive, paid print columns, at $100 or $150 a pop, to freebies on the likes of Craigslist and eBayClassifieds.

What has been lost as a result is an entire profession, once populated by hardened life-observers unwilling to take sides. These men and women painstakingly collected facts from often-hostile sources, each more reluctant than the last to part with state or corporate secrets. The difficulty of gathering that news gave the newsmen and women all the more pride over their objectivity. They were eager to disclose hard-won nuggets gleaned on little-known secrets critical to tip the scales of justice in the right direction or shed light on double-dealing or dirty political battles or huge city zoning wars.

Not to get too dewy eyed. Some newsmen were never objective and never pretended. Case in point, infamous 1930s New York Times liar, Walter Duranty, who won a Pulitzer prize for covering up and sugar coating the famine Stalin imposed on Ukraine via farm collectivization, a mass starvation that painfully but effectively murdered millions. That prize should long ago have been posthumously revoked. Moreover, Diana West now informs us in a stellar tome chock full of investigative reporting and highly authoritative documentation, of long roots to routine news subversion dating back to the 1930s.

Ryfe, however, pretends that journalists are still trained to value and practice objectivity and balance and that they gather the same old information in the same old way, although the old economics of newspapering disappeared eons ago. Actually, most individual journalists do not even attempt to ferret out both sides of every story. Reason and balance are no longer part of the equation and they have not been for a very very long time.

A while back I encountered a former colleague, a business journalist, who was now teaching how to cover Islam at a major journalism school. The professor had never cracked a single Islamic text, never read the Quran, any Hadith, or the Sira (Life of Muhammad), much less any volume of Islamic jurisprudence, all of them for years readily available in English. No, the good teacher for all coursework relied solely on indoctrination designed for Western dupes.

I agree with another reviewer, who observes that this book lacks a moral center. Sure good journalists have lost their jobs and newspapers have gone under. And whose fault is that? Yes, there is an economic problem. The underlying issue, however, hardly rests alone on the cost of manning a painstaking team of fact collectors or the loss of ad revenue to the internet.

Over time, the newspaper industry itself taught society to regard facts as worthless antiques. Oh facts? Who cares about those. Balance? What's that, who needs it. Justice is what I say, and only what I say. Don't bother us with facts. We need report only facts we happen to like, facts that support our view.

Sadly, places like the New York Times and Washington Post and Chicago Tribune manufactured that problem, a la Duranty.

The promise of the future of journalism

"Can Journalism Survive?" by David M. Ryfe is an outstanding ethnographic study of journalism's unraveling and reinvention. Mr. Ryfe is a professor of journalism who skillfully blends academic theory with first-hand research conducted while working as a reporter at three separate news organizations across the country. This timely book will interest readers who want to gain a sophisticated perspective on the news profession including the promise of the future of journalism.

Mr. Ryfe demonstrates that big-city newspapers have been in decline for decades as former subscribers have relocated to the suburbs. Immersing himself in various newsrooms in the 2000s, Mr. Ryfe came to appreciate the cultural practices of journalists that have persisted through the current tough times. Mr. Ryfe witnessed the fear among reporters as budget cuts led to layoffs. As the Internet deepened the crisis by cutting deep into print's classified advertising revenues, the author explains that journalists and managers have struggled to find solutions not for want of the desire to change; but out of uncertainty about what exactly to do about it.

On that point, Mr. Ryfe surveys the digital media landscape to speculate about what might come next. Mr. Ryfe discusses a few of the promising online news services that have empowered journalists to create more meaningful content. However, Mr. Ryfe contends that only the largest newspapers can thrive in a competitive online environment; small to midsized newspapers will need to figure out how to collaborate with their local online communities and help solve common problems of interest. In this manner, Mr. Ryfe sees opportunity for journalism to both reinvent itself and continue to hold power accountable to democracy.

A road map to how we got into this mess

I've been a newspaper reporter since 1992, working for five newspapers, along with a freelancing stint and a little time in the wilderness between newspaper jobs. This is a confusing, difficult time for newspapers: At least two of my previous employers have gone under and many of my former coworkers are no longer in the field -- a loss to both journalism and the readers they once served.

But it's not, as is sometimes suggested, all the Internet's fault, or the fault of changing public tastes, or the fault of clueless executives, although each of those have played their part. Academic David Ryfe's book looks at the decades-old societal changes that both created the modern newspaper industry and the forces that are now, if not destroying it, are certainly turning it into something else.

His book includes a case study of three papers struggling with change in the modern era and why each of them ultimately failed. (Full disclosure: I'm now employed by the same company as John Paton and Steve Buttry, two of the only newspapermen whose actual names are used, which I admire. I've never met Paton, but I've been in the same room with Buttry at least twice.) The failures he outlines mostly boil down to journalists being unwilling or unable to change dramatically enough in this shifting economic, social and technological environment. That seems harsh, but I found myself ruefully nodding in recognition to most of his descriptions. If someone is going to "save" newspapers, it'll be someone like Jeff Bezos, imposing change from without, rather than an established journalist managing to reinvent the wheel.

And that's one of the failures of the book, beyond Ryfe's occasional tendency to write too much like an academic, and not enough like the journalist he moonlighted as while researching this book: While he clearly has some idea of what the "networked journalism" future looks like, he's seemingly reticent about spelling out even many of his theories, despite an audience of journalists who'd surely like an idea of where Ryfe, after his years of research, suspects the road might ultimately lead.

Still, this is a worthwhile read for anyone interested in a dispassionate and well-considered look at how newspapers got into the state they're currently in and at least a few hints at to where the road might lead from here.

About the Author

David Walls is professor emeritus of sociology at Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park, California.  He is co-editor of Appalachia in the Sixties and author of The Activist’s Almanac.  He worked with the Appalachian Volunteers, a community organizing project in the central Appalachian coalfields, from 1966 to 1970. He presently is a member of the leadership council of the North Bay Organizing Project.

The groups, the tactics, the history & science- a small handy guide to understanding how these groups work

This book is not at all long- it's rather concise, but packed full of information. It has opened the world of community organizing as a science up to me. I had heard the term, but wasn't familiar with really what it entailed. I feel much more educated on the subject since reading this.

I like to keep track of protest and often watch them as they develop on social media and with livestream. This book is good for anyone with such an interest, or for people involved in any intelligence work or directly with community organizing.

The beginning of the book is a list of all active community organizing groups in the US today. It covers the history of community organizing, how groups are functioning today, and some of the tactics. One of the things I learned was that unconventional tactics to get results are often a modality. In describing how all this works, a lot of things that I have seen and read about in the news really started making sense to me. I had never thought of community organizing as a science of any sorts really, but this book changed my mind about that! ACORN, for instance, is one of the groups covered in detail.

Finally, it's a handy reference book on several of the most prominent groups.

Thoughtful, but not sure of audience...

Community Organizing, by David Walls, is not written as a "how to" book. Rather, it is an academic review of the history of community organizing in the US after 1900, and then a review of the theory and practices of select organizations and movements. I have taught a community service course in the past, and this isn't a book for that course. I've been interested in developing a course in activism, and I don't think this would be a book for that course either, but I certainly can see students reading one or two chapters of it.

Overall, this was an interesting, thoughtful, and well-written book, but I'm not certain who the audience is. However, with that said, I've given it a spot on my bookshelf... time will tell how often I reference this material.

Necessary reading for activists

David Walls has provided a valuable resource for anyone who wants to understand progressive social change in this country. He gives a thoughtful overview of the organizing tradition that sprang from the work of Saul Alinsky, from his knowledge as a serious participant in social change and as an scholar in the field. It is necessary reading for anyone with any interest in community organizing and social change. He notes that he has had an affiliation with one of the national organizing networks, but that he has tried to present the other networks in a fair light; in my experience with some of those other networks, he has done a good job. Indeed, Walls is generous in his comments about the various networks; he also makes some valuable criticisms, though they are perhaps understated. In a world that has at times been characterized by turf battles, I appreciate the spirit he brings to the discussion.

While states are designated arbiters of human rights according to human rights instruments, they do not exist in a vacuum. Political sociology helps us to understand how global neoliberalism and powerful non-governmental actors (particularly economic actors such as corporations and financial institutions) deeply affect states’ ability and likelihood to enforce human rights standards.

This book offers keen insights for understanding rights claims, and the institutionalization of, access to, and restrictions on human rights. It will be invaluable to human rights advocates, and undergraduate and graduate students across the social sciences.

About the Author
Benoît Peeters was born in Paris in 1956. Following a degree in Philosophy at the Sorbonne (Paris I), he went on to study for his Masters at the École Pratique des Hautes Études under the direction of Roland Barthes. He has since published over forty works on a wide variety of subjects and has written essays and biographies on Hergé, Alfred Hitchcock, and Paul Valéry.

Derrida: The Life and Times

Benoit Peeters' biography of Jacques Derrida was very well received when it was published in France in 2010, and it now appears here in a competent translation by Andrew Brown. The favorable reviews were justified, in my view, as this is an engrossing nuts-and-bolts overview of Derrida. Anyone expecting a so-called "intellectual biography" will be disappointed, as Peeters explicitly disavows this approach, which would exclude much of the "life and times" of traditional biography. Instead, we have an old-fashioned chronological life, who did what and when, without much analysis of Derrida's works or with any attempt to replicate Derrida's style. This is a good choice, as Derrida's work is so vast (60 volumes and counting) and disparate that an attempt to deal with it in an overview would be extremely lengthy. Some American readers, I suspect, will criticize Peeters for his focus on the internecene squabbles and feuds Derrida became involved in from the time he became well-known in the 1960s, but actually I found this interesting and informative. What critical judgments Peeters does provide are well-justified, for instance stressing the centrality of "Speech and Phenomena" to understanding Derrida. On the negative side, the translation seems to become a little "rougher" after about page 400 or so, but I'm not sure this is the fault of the editors or the translator. A few minor errors creep in (e.g., "University of Irvine", "University of Villanova", the Searle-Derrida exchange is described as "violent") but in a 600-page book, these are minimal. The best parts, in my view, were the overview of Derrida at 60, focusing on his daily life, and the moving final section. Here we see Derrida, knowing he was approaching death soon (pancreatic cancer) patiently correcting student essays far into the night. One would be hard-pressed to think of a person of similar stature having this care and concern. Peeters has done some incredible research into the Derrida archives, no mean feat, as he never threw anything away, from his student essays on.
Overall, if one wants a traditional biography of Derrida, this is the place to go. I have a shelf (or two!) where since the 1970s, Derrida's works and critical studies on the works have been accumulating, without my making much progress beyond reading a handful and half-reading some of the others. Reading Peeters has inspired me to make a new attempt, as he makes clear, if we didn't already know it, that this is one of the main thinkers of the 20th Century.

Prophets in Peacetime: The Curse of Pettiness

I recommend this book. Let nothing I say discourage a curious reader in that regard. It flows, maybe too easily; it is informative, maybe too much in some ways; and it quotations are many and lend an immediacy to the narrative, again, maybe too close to the event. All told, it is a solid, readable, journalistic style accounting of Derrida's comings and goings. I thoroughly enjoyed the time spent with this book.
So, my reservations are more a matter of the nature of the musings this book engendered: I wondered less about the life of a great and pathbreaking thinker, and more about what an "intellectual biography" (which this is not) entails. As a non-professional philosopher who has spent a lot of time reading and studying Derrida, and some great commentators on his work (see: John D. Caputo: The Prayers and Tears of Jacques Derrida), I did not feel that I was placed in closer proximity to the "mind" that offered, not only deconstruction (which Peeters focuses on), but also the promise, the "yes, yes," the post-Judaic, post-Benjaminian "messianism." I did not get a sense of a man, not only of the "left," but also the man who has crossed over, out of positivistic nihilism, into a non-ubermenschian openness (the first yes) to what comes (the second yes). I wanted to feel closer to that man, but this book did not offer that.
Instead, we get the tale of university-agonisties, of petty academic rivalries, of the usual affair gone bad, while the heroic marriage endures. Really -- you could have plugged in any number of names, besides Derrida, into this book and it would be virtually the same story. Petty academics, protecting their posts and positions refuse admittance to the club of the outsider. And, happily, for this intrepid wanderer there are also splendid friends (I was so glad to hear that Jean-Luc Nancy and Derrida were friends -- I also love Nancy's work).
So, what do we want from an "intellectual biography" (which this is not), or a biography about an intellectual (which this is)? For as autobiographical a writer as Derrida was (e.g. "Circumfessions") would a deeper probing into the workings of the post-NIetzschean man not be possible? Again, Caputo has ventured there, but not "biographically." In an interview with Derek Attridge in 1989 (in "Acts of Literature," p. 43) Derrida says, "In a minimal autobiographical trait can be gtathered the greatest potentiality of historical, theoretical, linguistic, philosophical culture -- that's really what interests me." Moi aussi.
So, no complaints. Just wondering.
By the way -- to the Amazon Inquisitors -- I am not a relative of Peeters, I am not a fan, I do not know him, I have no interest in the "success" of this book. That's just to spare you whatever labor you are expending in this endeavor of purification of yours. Maybe a lesson in "deconstruction" might be of value in Amazon's executive ranks.

Splendid biography of Jacques Derrida

Born Jackie Derrida in Algeria, he changed his name to Jacques after beginning his academic career. The book traces his early years, including facing challenges as a Jew in French Algeria during World War II. The challenge of any book on Derrida is to provide a sense of both the person and his ideas. And Derrida's ideas are not always easy to grasp. Indeed, Michel Foucault once referred to Derrida as "obscurante terroriste." That is, Derrida's work was obscurely written--and when one missed what Derrida meant, he would attack said individual. Hence, obscure terrorist.

Derrida's youth and early academic training were characterized by bouts of depression and anxiety. He had some reverses in his academic career, but overcame them.

He began to write as his academic career began. The book discusses his friendships--and his conflicts with others. And sometimes both: He and Jurgen Habermas were notoriously scathing toward one another's work, until they developed a modus vivendi in later life. The conflicts between Foucault and Derrida are depicted, too. Just so, his friendships with scholars such as J. Hillis Miller and Paul De Man are chronicled. We learn of his family life and of his complex personal life.

Then, of course, there is his work. His concept of "differance" is pretty accessibly presented. Lay readers will have a good sense of the importance of the idea. Deconstruction? The notion is first presented and is not so easy to get a handle on, although by repeated discussion over the course of the book, readers should "get it." Indeed, one of the greatest challenges with this book is trying to get a sense of Derrida's works. And he was very prolific, authoring many books, publications, and lectures.
