The book goes on to examine how in this new century it is systems that have to change, to move from growing high carbon systems to those that are low carbon. Many suggestions are made as to how to innovate such low carbon systems. It is shown that such a transition has to happen fast so as to create positive feedbacks of each low carbon system upon each other. Various scenarios are elaborated of differing futures for the middle of this century, futures that all contain significant costs for the scale, extent and richness of social life.
Climate Change and Society thus attempts to replace economics with sociology as the dominant discipline in climate change analysis. Sociology has spent much time examining the nature of modern societies, of modernity, but mostly failed to analyse the carbon resource base of such societies. This book seeks to remedy that failing. It should appeal to teachers and students in sociology, economics, environmental studies, geography, planning, politics and science studies, as well as to the public concerned with the long term future of carbon and society.

An overview of climate change and sociology

I have not yet finished this book, but I noticed no one else has provided a review, so I thought I should review the portion I have read.
If you are looking for a book that empowers you to argue convincingly for or against climate change, this probably isn't the right book for you.
This book attempts to address the relationship between social structures and climate change. It doesn't appear to be a description of the underlying science of climate change, but rather a discussion of how societies are designed around a high carbon emissions lifestyle and how climate change will impact these societies in the future.
Many of the arguments presented by the author rely very heavily on arguments presented in other books. The author clearly identifies his sources and often presents several different perspectives regarding a single topic. To some extent, this book feels like an extensive literature review of previously published books. I appreciate the work the author has done to summarize a variety of different arguments in a single, concise book.
The book seems to be intended for an audience with a background/interest in sociology. That is not an area I am very familiar with, but I think the author does a good job accommodating a broader audience. This book has given me much to think about.
