Gender and Peacebuilding (Gender and Global Politics), by Claire Duncanson

Gender and Peacebuilding offers a comprehensive and up to date analysis of how and why gender matters in contemporary peace operations. It draws on a wide range of examples from across the world to offer a nuanced account of the UN?s attempts to mainstream gender into peace operations via Security Council Resolution 1325, and assesses the successes and failures of this effort to enhance the participation and protection of women and girls in peacebuilding operations. In presenting this mixed picture of progress and ongoing challenges, the book argues for bold steps forward that will enable peacebuilding to contest the current neoliberal order, address structural inequalities, and bring about feminist visions of peace and security. It is only by focusing attention on the economic empowerment of women and its ability to temper the dangers of neo-liberalism in post-conflict contexts that feminists can hope to achieve these aims.

Timely, critical and engaged, this book provides an invaluable guide to the issues for students of peace and conflict studies, and sets the agenda for future scholarship and advocacy.

Joining the Resistance, by Carol Gilligan

Since the publication of her landmark book In a Different Voice, Carol Gilligan has transformed the way we think about women and men and the relations between them. It was ‘the little book that started a revolution’, and with more than 800,000 copies in print it has become one of the most widely read and influential books ever written on gender and human development.

In her new book Joining the Resistance Carol Gilligan reflects on the evolution of her thinking and shows how her key ideas were interwoven with her own life experiences. Her work began with the question of voice: who is speaking to whom, in what body, telling what stories about which relationships? By listening carefully she heard a voice that had been held in silence, and in the process realized the extent to which we – both women and men – had been telling false stories about ourselves.

In her subsequent work Gilligan found that adolescent girls resisted pressures to disengage themselves from their honest voices, and by joining their resistance she opened the way for the development of a more humane way of thinking about personal and political relationships. For the central conviction of her work today – and the central thesis of this book – is that the requisites for love and the requisites for citizenship in a democratic society are one and the same. Both voice and the desire to live in relationships inherent in our human nature, together with the capacity to resist false authority.

Combining autobiographical reflection with an analysis of key questions about gender and human development, this timely and highly readable book by one of America’s greatest contemporary thinkers will appeal to a wide readership.

Review
"It is fun moving through this book with Gilligan as she chances on this or that element of patriarchy - in Freud, Lysistrata, Hawthorne, Marvell, Oresteia. And it is enlightening to watch her demolish the wheeze of a child's support scheme which never was or is the simple mother/father/child triad."
The Review of Arts, Literature, Philosophy, and the Humanities

"This is a small book about love, hope and empathy in the context of Carol Gilligan’s journey as a psychologist, a researcher, a writer and a feminist. It is a book that emerging social science researchers and clinical practitioners will find much in, particularly with regard to her passion for qualitative research and feminism."
Sex Roles

"Helps heal the split between reason and emotion, mind and body, self and relationships, especially as they relate to gender identity. There is much food for thought in this work."
Scientific and Medical Network

"An intelligent, mature and important contribution to the kind of feminism we all need and want … Gilligan has written an important book which should be read by all, not only by girls and women, but also by boys and men.  Her invitation for all to join the resistance should be heeded, for its beneficiaries belong to humans of all genders and ages.  In this sense, we should all count ourselves as feminists of Gilligan’s type and thus make way for a democratic society of caring equals."
USC Graduate Journal

"In Joining the Resistance, Gilligan makes a useful distincton in the debate about the ethic of care, by which her earlier work has been characterized and criticized, to emphasize her main theoretical point: The way forward out of patriarchy is a democratic solution that frees women and men to pursue a human ethic of care."
Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books

“Carol Gilligan is one of the pre-eminent psychologists of our time. Joining the Resistance is a leap forward in what has become her life-journey, connecting psychology to culture. The book stands on its own as a work of art; it is beautifully written and like the best sort of novel, full of surprises.”
Richard Sennett, New York University

"Original work expands our humane capacity. In Joining the Resistance, Carol Gilligan continues to inspire us. Hers is a generous art, clearing a road that leads to a thriving place - one of love and justice. Will we allow ourselves?"
Adrian Nicole LeBlanc, author of Random Family: Love, Drugs, Trouble, and Coming of Age in the Bronx

Familiar voice, new view!
By Marianne Makman, M.D.
Carol Gilligan has written a concise and beautiful follow-up decades later to her well known "In a Different Voice", the game changing book about the ways in which boys and girls learn to see the world and describe it. In this new book she presents an evolving view of girls' and boys' developments in our world wherein there can be a choice between a "Patriarchal" society of rules about gender behavior and a more open, humane society without laws about who can love whom and how. I highly recommend the book to: girls, women, psychologists, psychiatrists and social workers, those interested in drama and literature and men who wish to be enlightened!

Gilligan's research
By Friends and Feathers
The book is a summary of some of Gilligan's research re. Teen girls. She also near the end quotes someone else's research on teen boys. She identifies some of the problems with patriarchal society and points to ways out. I have heard of Gilligan's for years but this is the first book of hers that I have read. My book club chose it.

Great!
By Grace A Clark
Her insights are that women are humans...humans have rights....end of story....I love it! So many nice stories in here that come to that conclusion but we need to be reminded every so often!

Women and Wars: Contested Histories, Uncertain FuturesFrom Polity

Where are the women? In traditional historical and scholarly accounts of the making and fighting of wars, women are often nowhere to be seen. With few exceptions, war stories are told as if men were the only ones who plan, fight, are injured by, and negotiate ends to wars. As the pages of this book tell, though, those accounts are far from complete. Women can be found at every turn in the (gendered) phenomena of war. Women have participated in the making, fighting, and concluding of wars throughout history, and their participation is only increasing at the turn of the 21st century. Women experience war in multiple ways: as soldiers, as fighters, as civilians, as caregivers, as sex workers, as sexual slaves, refugees and internally displaced persons, as anti-war activists, as community peace-builders, and more. This book at once provides a glimpse into where women are in war, and gives readers the tools to understood women’s (told and untold) war experiences in the greater context of the gendered nature of global social and political life.

Review
Book of the month on Intercross

"Women and Wars fills the vacuum left by the 'women as victims' approach that characterized the early 2000's, with a diverse array of options for understanding the roles and perspectives that women have during conflict, including: soldiers, civilians, caregivers, sex workers, refugees and internally displaced persons, anti-war activists, and community peace-builders"
PRISM

"If I were to deliver a course or module focused on the topic of 'women and wars', this is without a doubt the textbook I would choose."
Gender and Development

"To my mind, the very best academic work makes its reader sit up and take notice, either because the ideas are unfamiliar or because familiar ideas have been articulated in a new and engaging way. The individual chapters in this volume do both."
Gender and Development

"A valuable collection for everyone interested in learning some of the ways feminist (IR) analysis is currently formulating, studying, and presenting its war questions."
LSE Review of Books

"A comprehensive and highly readable collection, which is thematically and conceptually coherent."
Resilience

"Too often, women remain invisible in times of war. With contributions from scholars, activists, and policymakers, Women and Wars uncovers stories about women?s multiple roles as warriors, war victims, and peacebuilders. An important text for anyone concerned with the tragic consequences of today?s wars. And a reminder that wars are always gendered."
J. Ann Tickner, School of International Relations, University of Southern California

"With its diverse, thoughtful, and theoretically rich perspectives on gender, conflict and violence this book stands out from the crowd as an exceptional and interdisciplinary contribution to the field. This will be a valuable resource for scholars and practitioners and should be treated as a 'go to' resource giving an exciting perspective on the state of the field in gender and war."
Megan Mackenzie, University of Sydney

"The book provides a comprehensive picture of the current scholarship on women and war as well as detailed and disturbing accounts of the lives of women during and after many recent wars. It would be an ideal text for a variety of courses on international and human security."
Craig Murphy, Wellesley College

"The chapters are rich both in their content and their diversity. Women and Wars stands out as an important volume in an increasingly busy field of scholarship. I will return to the text many times for future teaching and will undoubtedly be assigning chapters to my students."
Dr Catherine O?Rourke, University of Ulster

A must read for anyone interested in issues of women, peace and security
By Kristen A. Cordell
I have followed Carol Cohn's work at the Boston Consortium on Gender, Security and Human Rights for many years. Her perspective is always interesting and accessible. This book is no exception. I found it a must read for anyone working /studying /writing on the topic of women peace and security. It was particularly interesting due to the fact that Cohn incorporates many different (expert) authors into the anthology and in doing so is able to showcase the diverse roles that women play in war, including: as soldiers, as fighters, as civilians, as caregivers, as sex workers, as sexual slaves, refugees and internally displaced persons, as anti-war activists, as community peace-builders, and more. Cohn approaches the topic of women and war as a continuum and appreciates the fact that without international attention to gender- peace is still out of reach. The message is a fundamental as it is vital- two things that can also be said about the book.

Great resource
By Amanda H Blair
Wonderful volume on many of the gendered dimensions of contemporary armed conflict. Unlike similar edited volumes the authors included in this book are experts on these issues. Can easily be read in entirety or as standalone chapters. A great text to use for courses on armed conflict and/or militarization.

Cinema, by Alain Badiou

For Alain Badiou, films think, and it is the task of the philosopher to transcribe that thinking. What is the subject to which the film gives expressive form? This is the question that lies at the heart of Badiou’s account of cinema.

He contends that cinema is an art form that bears witness to the Other and renders human presence visible, thus testifying to the universal value of human existence and human freedom. Through the experience of viewing, the movement of thought that constitutes the film is passed on to the viewer, who thereby encounters an aspect of the world and its exaltation and vitality as well as its difficulty and complexity. Cinema is an impure art cannibalizing its times, the other arts, and people – a major art precisely because it is the locus of the indiscernibility between art and non-art. It is this, argues Badiou, that makes cinema the social and political art par excellence, the best indicator of our civilization, in the way that Greek tragedy, the coming-of-age novel and the operetta were in their respective eras.

From Publishers Weekly
The best of French philosopher Badiou's over 50 years' worth of writing on cinema is collected in this intriguing volume. It begins with an interview conducted by editor de Baecque in which Badiou considers the role of film in culture as a "school for everyone", his evolving relationship with the cinema, and the radical politics that often inform his work. His 1977 essay "Revisionist Cinema" lays out these politics, decrying the ideals of "new bourgeoisie" directors like Bergman and Kubrick. Badiou posits an "axiomatic" approach to film discussion in which we eschew judgment in favor of asking "how a particular film lets us travel with a particular idea in such a way that we might discover what nothing else could lead us to discover." Badiou describes film as "the seventh art", explaining how it interacts with other media, and provides brilliant, in-depth analyses on the techniques, styles, and themes of several films. His crucial essay is "Cinema as Philosophical Experimentation" in which he explores film as both a "mass art" and a subject worthy of serious philosophical thought. Badiou's writing style may be difficult to those unaccustomed to French philosophy, but the material is worth the effort. (June)

Review
"Fascinating ... every word of Badiou's writing radiates with a pronounced sense of exuberance for cinema, and presents the convincing case that it is the liveliest of the seven arts."
Film International

"Provides brilliant, in-depth analyses on the techniques, styles, and themes of several films."
Publishers Weekly

"The chance to truly and fully understand the nature of cinema through the eyes of someone who is clearly one of its most passionate advocates."
Morning Star

"Badiou’s unfashionable militancy is sure to continue to generate a degree of mock not-this-again head-scratching from the guardians of sober academic scholarship in the humanities, as well as from whoever might be assigned to review Badiou in say, The New York Review of Books."
Los Angeles Review of Books

"While a thorough reading of this book is an intellectual investment, I would highly recommend it, particularly to those interested in the pursuit of cultural renewal by artistic means."
Englewood Review of Books

"There is an aphoristic concision to Badiou's thinking that is capable of producing moments of true enlightenment."
Review 31

"These rich and diverse pieces are all ostensibly concerned with cinema, but are ultimately far more profound than often their occasion would demand. Providing an important exploration of politics, esthetics, the visible, and cinema's relation to thinking and procedures of decision, this volume gives the reader of Badiou a sense of this major thinker's intellectual development. Spitzer's translation of this volume is a careful and meticulous rendering of Badiou's thought."
Claire Colebrook, Penn State University

"Since the 1950s Badiou has written in excess of thirty essays on cinema. It is clear that film has been a constant companion in his articulation of art as a form of truth-making event, the creation of unworldly truths. This collection brings these writings together in English for the first time, allowing us to see just how important film is for Badiou’s philosophy of the event."
John Mullarkey, Kingston University, London

"These rich and diverse pieces are all ostensibly concerned with cinema, but are ultimately far more profound than often their occasion would demand. Providing an important exploration of politics, esthetics, the visible, and cinema's relation to thinking and procedures of decision, this volume gives the reader of Badiou a sense of this major thinker's intellectual development. Spitzer's translation of this volume is a careful and meticulous rendering of Badiou's thought."
Claire Colebrook, Penn State University

Set aside preconceptions, or read selectively
By Thomas F. Dillingham
Although there are some philosophically oriented English/American writers about movies, they tend not to be among those most recognized by anglophone movie fans. Some very fine writers--James Agee, Andrew Sarris, Pauline Kael, Dwight Macdonald, Murray Kempton, and many others--have produced readable and insight-filled commentaries on specific movies and the art form in general. It is uncommon, however, in English language writing about movies, to encounter the kind of complex and sometimes almost incomprehensible prose produced by the philosopher-critics of the French tradition.

Alain Badiou, as we are reminded in the introduction to this collection, has been writing about CINEMA for more than fifty years. This collection offers a number of fascinating, sometimes impossibly arcane, sometimes disappointingly boring, commentaries, usually about genres or directorial oeuvres more than about particular movies. In other words, though Badiou has strong opinions about the importance, indeed the deep relevance, of cinema to western culture, he is not a movie reviewer and does not bother with thumbs up or down, numbers of stars or popcorn tubs, and so on. As an unreconstructed (though somewhat reconfigured over the years) Marxist, his analyses tend to focus on what he considers the fundamental issues and orientation of the films he discusses, and he shows a strong preference for the kinds of politically oriented films that we associate with Jean-Luc Godard or, in Badiou's case, the surprising examples of the films of Jacques Tati. He strongly denigrates some of the most famous and revered French directors and their "quality" films, which he considers to be mummified museum pieces rather than living works of art.

For a reader willing to navigate the sometimes jargon-turgid prose, these essays are often rewarding. One major drawback for many American readers will be the frequent references to political activities and even politicians indigenous to France and the intricacies of French politics, as well as other distinctly parochial francophone interests. Some notes--not really copious enough for non-French readers--help to clarify some of those points, but a few essays are really worthless to us because of their arcane nature. I found, therefore, that reading selectively and being willing simply to skip ahead if an essay became too opaque, was the way to go with this. From that, I found enough of interest to make the book a worthwhile encounter.

Badiou on Cinema: a collection of essays from across his career
By Pen Name?
As a reader of continental philosophy, I recall the emergence of English translations of Badiou's work about a decade ago, preceded by the praise and references of Slavoj Zizek. I was curious at least to check out the work of this thinker, though for the most part I have found his writings to be tangential or at odds with my own research interests. But, I do like to keep up from time to time with the work of anyone so prominent in the field, particularly when it comes to work on the arts and culture.

It seems like a lot of modern French philosophers eventually publish a volume on cinema, and so here we have Alain Badiou collecting some of his own writings on cinema, from essays published and previously unpublished. These essays span his whole career, which is interesting in itself. One work even dates as far back as 1957 when Badiou was a student. The volume was originally published in France in 2010 and features both an essay on Clint Eastwood from that year and a new 20 page interview to start the volume which deals with his interest in cinema and engages with the circumstances of some of his writings. This interview itself may be the biggest draw for some readers as it gives a direct look into how Badiou understands his own ideas opening up in relation to cinematic culture and experience.

Like the essay collection "Infinite Thought," this volume may provide a nice entry way into Badiou's thinking, particularly for those who are already versed in film. It's certainly more approachable than say... Being and Event.

the seventh art
By Case Quarter
antoine de baecque, by assembling all of alain badiou's published writings, plus two unpublished essays, lectures, and a couple of interviews, on cinema, has done not just badiou, but the reader, a service.

the book's strength relies on badiou's developing and continuous thought from essay to essay. the essays are arranged in chronological order. over the years we are privileged seeing how badiou developed his ideas on cinema, starting in 1957. badiou was a twenty year old student, spending his free time at a movie theater near his school, watching french and american films from the 1920s. his first film essay, CINEMATIC CULTURE, was published in vin nouveau. in that essay he discussed film as technique and as influenced, writing on scene, the shot, the frame, and adding his opinions on intuition, language and taste. `cinema,' he would later say, `is the art of the perpetual past ... to speak of film is always to speak of a reminiscence ...'

fast forward 20 years, ten years after the events in france during may 1968 finds badiou critiquing the events and cinema from a political perspective. badiou is a maoist. his first of several pieces for la feuille foudre, the journal for a marxist-leninist intervention in cinema and culture, is REVISIONIST CINEMA, a manifesto pooh-poohing counter revolutionary art.

fortunately, for the reader, the 1980s have him distancing art from politics, and this is where his ideas start to get interesting. goddard becomes a focal point for him. badiou discusses goddard's techniques and his method of situating the political and human connection. badiou's distancing of the political is not a relinquishment of politics, he's very clear about the difference. in a film critique from this period he discussed paul nizan, a good friend of jean paul sartre, mentioned by sartre in a lengthy biographical sketch in sartre's SITUATIONS.

the 1990s and into the 21st century show him as the philosopher working through questions of how film connects to reality. he uses plato's images within the cave to discuss the first MATRIX film. he equates the ancient greek audience at the tragedy plays with the filmgoer since the 1900s, finding both audiences engaged in popular entertainment of their time. cinema is a mass art, enjoyed in its immediacy by millions, offering a democratic appeal which no other art form has ever matched. one reason, unlike the other seven categories of art, `film is an impurity that can only be purified by the admixture of the Beautiful,' with american cinema being `unquestionably one of the greatest artistic creations of the century,' the tension and the character, that is, the hero, in the epic, who against impossible odds, car chases and explosions, always triumphs, a scenario that rarely happens in european film. a couple of other american films discussed are MAGNOLIA and clint eastwood's A PERFECT WORLD. reading badiou's enthusiasm for american cinema, i wonder what he thinks of weekly american tv dramas.

there is also his TRIBUTE TO GILLES DELEUZE, a description of the deleuze's books CINEMA 1 and CINEMA 2, in which badiou ponders time in philosophy and cinema, speculating how cinema will change the way philosophy is conducted.

there are several films, which i have not seen and intend to see, and films i have seen at which, thanks to badiou, i will take another look.

Citizen Witnessing: Revisioning Journalism in Times of Crisis, by Stuart Allan

What role can the ordinary citizen perform in news reporting? This question goes to the heart of current debates about citizen journalism, one of the most challenging issues confronting the news media today.

In this timely and provocative book, Stuart Allan introduces the key concept of ‘citizen witnessing’ in order to rethink familiar assumptions underlying traditional distinctions between the ‘amateur’ and the ‘professional’ journalist. Particular attention is focused on the spontaneous actions of ordinary people – caught-up in crisis events transpiring around them – who feel compelled to participate in the making of news. In bearing witness to what they see, they engage in unique forms of journalistic activity, generating firsthand reportage – eyewitness accounts, video footage, digital photographs, Tweets, blog posts – frequently making a vital contribution to news coverage.

Drawing on a wide range of examples to illustrate his argument, Allan considers citizen witnessing as a public service, showing how it can help to reinvigorate journalism’s responsibilities within democratic cultures. This book is required reading for all students of journalism, digital media and society.

Review

"This combination of historic contextualization, theoretical analysis, empirical research, and news case studies (citizen and journalist) makes what could have been an impenetrable academic text, a lively, inspiring, and thoughtful read accessible to scholars and students alike."
Harvard’s International Journal of Press / Politics

"It’s difficult to find fault with (this) book. I hope that it will change the way academics and the wider populous use the various terms associated with what has generally been labelled or mislabelled as citizen journalism and that the term citizen witnessing, as Allan conceptualises it, takes hold."
Digital Journalism

"Drawing on a wide range of relevant work, Allan shrewdly rethinks the idea of the “citizen journalist” by examining the “journalist as citizen” as well as the “citizen as accidental journalist”. Allan’s intelligent analysis of both classic and bang-up-to-date examples makes this a key contribution to understanding how journalism should best develop."
John Ellis, Royal Holloway, University of London

"An important book that moves the current debate about the future of journalism into a new domain. A must-read for journalism scholars, students and practitioners alike."
Pacific Journalism Review

'Stuart Allan reminds us "'war zones’ are also people’s homes." He critically documents how mobile and digital tools in the hands of billions around the world have opened up a radicalizing public service of “citizen witnessing” – a phenomenon that is invigorating journalism and forcing democratic (and not so democratic) institutions to greater accountability and responsibility.'
Susan Moeller, University of Maryland

'Allan's Citizen Witnessing invites readers to think more deeply about the everyday materialities that define acts of citizen journalism in times of crisis, the very real risks and losses it can entail, and the reasons why we will continue to rely on the courage of its documentarians, and the contingencies of happenstance they face, in the years to come. Citizen Witnessing will be essential reading in journalism studies and beyond.'
Carrie Rentschler, McGill University

Stuart Allan is professor of journalism at Bournemouth University. His previous books include: Matheson, D. & Allan, S., Digital War Reporting and Allan, S. & Thorsen E. (eds.), Citizen Journalism: Global Perspectives.

Causation (Key Concepts in Philosophy), by Douglas Kutach

In most academic and non-academic circles throughout history, the world and its operation have been viewed in terms of cause and effect. The principles of causation have been applied, fruitfully, across the sciences, law, medicine, and in everyday life, despite the lack of any agreed-upon framework for understanding what causation ultimately amounts to.

In this engaging and accessible introduction to the topic, Douglas Kutach explains and analyses the most prominent theories and examples in the philosophy of causation. The book is organized so as to respect the various cross-cutting and interdisciplinary concerns about causation, such as the reducibility of causation, its application to scientific modeling, its connection to influence and laws of nature, and its role in causal explanation. Kutach begins by presenting the four recurring distinctions in the literature on causation, proceeding through an exploration of various accounts of causation including determination, difference making and probability-raising. He concludes by carefully considering their application to the mind-body problem.

Causation provides a straightforward and compact survey of contemporary approaches to causation and serves as a friendly and clear guide for anyone interested in exploring the complex jungle of ideas that surround this fundamental philosophical topic.

Review
"A terrific introduction to the topic of causation in philosophy and cognate fields. His writing is clear and engaging without sacrificing rigor or conceptual sophistication. In this short book he surveys all of the major approaches to the topic. But more importantly, he shows the reader what it is like to explore the nuances of a complex subject with the benefit of a keen philosophical mind."
Chris Hitchcock, California Institute of Technology

"An engaging and long-overdue introduction to causation: what philosophers have said about it, why they've had trouble agreeing with each other, and why it matters, for all of us."
Carolina Sartorio, University of Arizona

The Polity series has shaped up to be a GREAT way to brush up on the most recent thinking in a given topic. Their selection of Doug Kutach for this gem on Causation is nothing less than inspired. Half of current thinking on causation is that it is either nonexistent, or a primary force like spacetime. Sound like Liebniz "The most complex fields are the most polarized, not due to complexity, but the number of connections and combinations of the simple?"

The other half believes all causation issues have been settled, or never will be settled, hence the lazy approach Dr. Kutach calls "stagnation" of the topic. So why even read this, even if it is fun and interesting? Well, you'd expect that answer in the forward or intro, but instead Doug saves the best for last, and answers the question "What do we need to know about causation..?" (and hence why care at all?) on the last 4 pages of the book (156-159). To summarize, causation is SO pervasive in real, practical life (from cooking to going on trial), that we ignore it at our own risk. Ok, to be fair, 22 of our 23 billion prefrontal/ cortex neurons do know a LOT about it, but Kutach also explains why each and every one of us should also enjoy a little conscious revelry in the topic, based on practicality and usefulness to life, as well as a mental workout, and takes us on that journey in fine fashion.

Causation, like all science, has now been splintered into over a thousand topics with a thousand books each, as in the "parens" on Wikipedia-- Causation (physics), Causation (philosophy), Causation (law)-- etc. I'm just making this up as an example, because if Wiki really did it, there would be thousands of articles! This book is a review of Causation (philosophy), and the wonderful thing is that it not only covers the entire field without compromising depth (in an intro sense), it also brings in the general context INCLUDING physics, the law, etc. Metaphysics (what's real?), Epistemology (what's knowledge?), Ontology (hierarchy of what exists and what doesn't), Taxonomy (classes of concepts), all either have a heart of causality or a take on it, and Doug does an amazing job not only covering each, but takes the time to explain in depth and detail what each means in plain English.

That's the rub, isn't it? There are so many specialized terms in philosophy that are semantic loops that it is often a real pain to read if we don't know those specialized meanings, and the logic can degenerate into BORING banter. Not so here! This book is a real page turner, fun (bringing in lots of stories, sci fi, quips, quotes and "tonnes" as the British would say of intuitive examples, explanations, and YES, detailed, careful definitions. For that reason alone this book is worth a look, as you'll understand a lot more about all the above topics. Like his other (expensive) gem (Causation and Its Basis in Fundamental Physics (Oxford Studies in Philosophy of Science)), Doug also is extremely current in those explanations, so you don't have to sit there wondering if what you are reading has already been eclipsed by some new hadron-like breakthrough.

Once you've enjoyed this thoroughly, if you want to go on in other detailed areas of causation (and you likely will, as this is admittedly intro but so much fun you'll want to), here are the top titles in terms of use in classes, ratings by teachers, and student ratings in each, modified by sales stats so you get a feel for the best of breed. (Note there are literally hundreds of books on the topic, and if there seems to be an Oxford bias, it's not me (I'm an American roboticist specializing in insect robotics), it is the fact that for some reason I don't get, Oxford has long been a "center of excellence" in causality, just like you'd want Cleveland Clinic for cardiology:

The "bible" of the legal side, but hard to find inexpensively, and (due to the Oxford bias above) leaning toward UK case precedents but with some good case law from the US and around the world (Almost all other causation and the law resources are thousands of dollars as Lexis Nexis buys them up, puts them on their database, and charges two arms and a leg for them): Causation in the Law. I got my copy for $12 US as I was willing to wait for shipping from the UK.

The more general bible of causation itself: The Oxford Handbook of Causation (Oxford Handbooks). In physics, check out Doug's own book above. For some less expensive but equally specialized overviews (although not as up to date as Doug in this one on newer math aspects, including determination, difference making and probability raising. To read the technical literature on those aspects you have to know, for example, the "difference" between difference and differential equations. Those selected here don't have that level of math (at least not throughout):

-- Causality: Models, Reasoning and Inference

-- Causation (Oxford Readings in Philosophy)

-- Causation and Responsibility

-- Causation: A User's Guide

-- Causation: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions)

Deep apologies if I've missed any of your favorites, either comment or email and I'll be sure to add them! Enjoy your sojourn into this literally inexhaustible topic, which many of your neuron gangs will find highly relevant, both for fun and real problem solving in life.

Peace Operations (War and Conflict in the Modern World), by Paul F. Diehl, Alexandru Balas

As peace operations become the primary mechanism of conflict management used by the UN and regional organizations, understanding their problems and potential is essential for a more secure world. In this revised and updated second edition, Paul Diehl and Alexandru Balas provide a cutting-edge analysis of the central issues surrounding the development, operation, and effectiveness of peace operations. Among many features, the book:

  • Traces the historical development of peace operations from their origins in the early 20th century through the development of modern peacebuilding missions and multiple simultaneous peace operations.
  • Tracks changes over time in the size, mission and organization of peace operations.
  • Analyses different organizational, financial, and troop provisions for peace operations, as well as assessing alternatives.
  • Lays out criteria for evaluating peace operations and details the conditions under which such operations are successful.

Drawing on a wide range of examples from those between Israel and her neighbours to more recent operations in Bosnia, Somalia, Darfur, East Timor, and the Congo, this new edition brings together the body of scholarly research on peace operations to address those concerns. It will be an indispensable guide for students, practitioners and general readers wanting to broaden their knowledge of the possibilities and limits of peace operations today.

"Comprehensive in scope, and up to date in its coverage, this book provides an excellent account of the development of international peacebuilding and peacekeeping operations. It shows how these operations have emerged and changed over time and provides vital context for understanding contemporary challenges and new developments. It also offers new ways of evaluating international efforts to build stable peace in some of the world’s most difficult and dangerous places. New students and old hands alike will benefit from reading this important new volume."

"With what is more than an updated historical primer on peace operations, Diehl and Balas have done a masterful job of differentiating peacekeeping and peacebuilding, synthesizing the most recent quantitative findings on correlates of success and identifying the future challenges for policymakers. All is accomplished in a highly accessible book."

Environmental Ethics: An Overview for the Twenty-First Century, by Robin Attfield

In this clear, concise, comprehensively revised and up-to-date introduction to environmental ethics, Robin Attfield guides the student through the key issues and debates in this field in ways that will also be of interest to a wide range of scholars and researchers.

The book introduces environmental problems and environmental ethics and surveys theories of the sources of the problems. Attfield also puts forward his own original contribution to the debates, advocating biocentric consequentialism among theories of normative ethics and defending objectivism in meta-ethics. The possibilities of ethical consumerism and investment are discussed, and the nature and basis of responsibilities for future generations in such areas as sustainable development are given detailed consideration. Attfield adopts an inclusive, cosmopolitan perspective in discussions of global ethics and citizenship, and illustrates his argument with a discussion of global warming, mitigation, adaptation and global justice.

The revised edition features a new chapter on climate change, new treatments of animal issues, ecofeminism, environmental aesthetics, invasion biology and virtue ethics, and new applications of the precautionary principle to fisheries, genetic engineering and synthetic biology. The glossary and bibliography have been updated to assist understanding of these themes.

The text uses a range of devices to aid understanding, such as summaries of key issues, and guides to further reading and relevant websites. It has been written particularly with a view to the needs of students taking courses in environmental ethics, and will be of interest to students and scholars of philosophy, ethics, geography, religion and environmental studies.

Review
"Robin Attfield has always been good at bringing together the fragmented, and sometimes quarrelsome, assemblies of campaigners who (somewhat desperately) strive to protect our planet. Here he does it again, wisely pointing out how many different reasons there are for attempting this enterprise and how they can most usefully be combined ... Congratulations!"
Mary Midgley

"This is clearly the best introductory book in environmental ethics to date."
Dieter Birnbacher, Heinrich Heine University, Düsseldorf

Holmes Rolston, III, Colorado State University

This is a scholarly work that may not be easy to read
By Connie (She who hikes with dogs)
This is a scholarly work that may not be easy to read. It is intended for students and researchers of environmental ethics. Author Robin Attfield does have a good argument here in that environmental issues become global issues and should concern everyone, which he lays out in the book's chapters.

The book is not easy to understand at first. In fact, the many theories and names mentioned is quite overwhelming. He covers a lot of theories by other environmental ethicists and philosophers, and his research is impressive. He mentions ecofeminism quite a bit in the early chapters, a term I had never heard of before. He covers debates and critiques in the first three chapters, all which can dazzle the mind or overload the cognitive thinking process.

The chapters become easier to understand as the book focuses on issues and gets away from the plethora of theories and ideologies of the first three chapters. Chapter 5's "Sustainable Development, Population and Precaution" starts getting introspective, and I find that starting with this chapter, the book gets much more interesting for the common reader. The book ends with more insight of global communities and climate change, wrapping up what starts out very dry into an intelligent, intellectual work of scholarly proportions.

He has a nice glossary toward the end of the book that I appreciate, because terms like "biocentric consequentialism" are not everyday words.

This book is well worth checking out.

A valiant effort at making environmental ethics understandable...
By R S Cobblestone
All of us make decisions or observations regarding what is "right" and what is "wrong." Understanding the logic behind these decisions is something different. With Environmental Ethics: An Overview for theTwenty-First Century, author and philosopher Robin Attfield takes the reader through environmental ethics methodically and carefully. Attfield repeats topics as necessary, reminds readers periodically what they should be understanding, and continues to cross-reference the topic under discussion with previous and future chapters. This makes this volume a useful book for a classroom setting at the college level, and also an understandable text when read outside of a classroom setting (although I can really see getting the most out of this book when combined with lecture and discussion).

I am appreciative of the focus not simply on the classic environmental issues of the past, but on current and future environmental issues.

New Ways To Read Hard Truths
By Kevin L. Nenstiel
As I write, many locations near my prairie hometown had their earliest 100-degree spring days ever, following a winter alternating between arctic cold and appallingly dry warmth. While media pundits dither over he-said/she-said fake debates and false equivalencies, global warming is unfolding mainly as scientists anticipated. Plus we can’t drink our well water anymore, while ragweed and toxic black mold grow everywhere. We’re overdue for serious planning.

Welsh ethicist Robin Attfield lays out the terms in current and imminent debates surrounding environmental change so we can engage the issues in real, not TV, terms. Because so many venues have reduced important debates to personalities and profiles, Attfield’s intricate definitions of terms serve valuable corrective measures. While his academic prose sometimes runs to impenetrability, his attempts to clarify humanity’s top global issue is both timely and welcome.

First, this isn’t a scientific text. Though evidence-based scientific reasoning remains dismally rare in climate debates, Attfield focuses, as his title implies, on ethical concerns: not possible options, but good options. For instance, what are we saving the earth for? Do we defend the environment for humanity’s sake, or because species and habitats have intrinsic value before humans arrive? Why we save the earth colors how we save the earth.

Organized environmental responses have been historically circumscribed by near-term thinking. Not only large-scale polluters, whose motivations are widely known, but even environmental activists have maintained narrow horizons. Banning coal-burning power plants would alleviate some problems, but at what human cost? Would carbon capture technologies fix global problems, or just create new incentives to thoughtless consumerism? Easy answers aren’t forthcoming. Ethical environmentalism requires seeing empirical evidence, and seeing beyond it, too.

Cost-benefit analysis has its detractors. Back in the 1990s, a famous poll indicated Americans would support environmental reforms “at any cost”—a position Americans rapidly walked back when real costs revealed themselves. Attfield recognizes every human action has moral implications; we do nothing abstractly, but rather, every choice forecloses on other choices. He persuasively argues that tools for morally uplifting decision-making exist, if we would just use them.

Attfield has no interest in climate change deniers. He spends no particular time debating whether global warming, soil salinization, water pollution, and other environmental catastrophes are really happening; like north of ninety-seven percent of climate scientists, he simply takes these issues as proven. But how to answer these issues is far less obvious. Simply saying “don’t do these destructive things” isn’t good enough, because ramifications echo down the line.

We’re not, say, in any position to abandon carbon-burning technology yet. How, then to ameliorate the damage atmospheric carbon does to global temperatures and UV rates? Economic measures, like Cap’n Trade, essentially permit rich capitalists to hoard pollution credits, ensuring the status quo perseveres for those with money. Horse-drawn idealism likewise punishes those who cannot afford it. Where do human interests and environmental necessity converge, or do they?

As just this one example, among Attfield’s many, demonstrates, obvious answers generally prove unsatisfactory. Because environmental degradation distributes its consequences blindly across the globe, we cannot think in national, regional, or class-based terms. Attfield spends entire chapters on global citizenship, in the old Jeffersonian ideal of “citizenship,” because we cannot life with blinders on any longer. We must, individually and together, act for the future we will eventually inhabit.

Don’t undertake this book flippantly. Attfield dedicates his largest effort to defining terms. Sometimes, in areas of empirical scientific discoveries, this is fairly easy. But in areas science cannot easily designate, definitions must expand to include controversial ideas and conflicting viewpoints. Attfield strives to remain scrupulously fair, and though he excludes ignorance merchantry and flat-earth pseudoscience, he struggles to include every legitimate disputant in his intellectual landscape.

Therefore, many concepts cable news treats as concise and unchallenged, Attfield examines from diverse viewpoints. Readers weaned on facile binary TV debates may find Attfield’s nuanced, philosophically dense approach overwhelming. Hey, I read philosophy, and I find Attfield very difficult. But he’s addressing very, very difficult problems, which grow more difficult with prolonged inaction. Mass-media debates prolong dialog while encouraging passivity. Attfield’s difficult philosophy empowers us to act.
