What Use is Sociology?: Conversations with Michael Hviid Jacobsen and Keith Tester, by Zygmunt Bauman, Michael Hviid Jacobsen, Keith Teste

What's the use of sociology? The question has been asked often enough and it leaves a lingering doubt in the minds of many. At a time when there is widespread scepticism about the value of sociology and of the social sciences generally, this short book by one of the world's leading thinkers offers a passionate, engaging and important statement of the need for sociology.

In a series of conversations with Michael Hviid Jacobsen and Keith Tester, Zygmunt Bauman explains why sociology is necessary if we hope to live fully human lives. But the kind of sociology he advocates is one which sees 'use' as more than economic success and knowledge as more than the generation of facts. Bauman makes a powerful case for the practice of sociology as an ongoing dialogue with human experience, and in so doing he issues a call for us all to start questioning the common sense of our everyday lives. He also offers the clearest statement yet of the principles which inform his own work, reflecting on his life and career and on the role of sociology in our contemporary liquid-modern world.

This book stands as a testimony to Bauman's belief in the enduring relevance of sociology. But it is also a call to us all to start questioning the world in which we live and to transform ourselves from being the victims of circumstance into the makers of our own history. For that, at the end of the day, is the use of sociology.

Review
"In What Use is Sociology?, Bauman peels back this hegemonic veneer, asking not what counts as sociology, but rather, what use is sociology? Via this shift, he encourages sociological practitioners to move beyond being blind followers of the latest sociologicaltrends. Instead, through self-reflexive analysis of his own work, Bauman provides a rare backstage glimpse into an engaged sociology that places people’s concerns at its centre as central to its mission."
Sociology

"What Use is Sociology? is a series of intimate conversations, which mine Bauman’s more than half a century of experience in the disciple—discussions which revisit truisms of the “sociological imagination” and which are littered with interesting anecdotes and asides particular to Bauman’s own intellectual journey. Bauman’s answers reveal the depth of his moral commitments and breadth of his critical engagement."
LSE Review of Books

"Sociology's principle purpose is to rouse people out of indifference and into action and it is this transition from inert to active knowledge that Bauman convincingly argues can bring about real change."

Short, provocative, easy to read, and aimed squarely at committed sociologists
By ML
WHAT IS IT?

This slim book (180 pp.) is an edited version of an extended conversation about sociology between the distinguished Polish-born sociologist Zygmunt Bauman and two other sociologists, Michael Hviid Jacobsen from Denmark and Keith Tester from the UK. It is loosely organized around four questions, each of which gets one chapter: What is Sociology? Why do Sociology? How should we do Sociology? and What does Sociology Achieve?

WHO IS IT FOR?

This should be obvious from the book's title, but the target audience is committed sociologists. The language is not overly technical, and the discussion does not assume too much background knowledge, so the book could be assigned to undergraduate sociology students, just as C. Wright Mills' The Sociological Imagination so often is. However, the book is much more likely to be fully appreciated by people who already consider themselves professional sociologists, particularly advanced graduate students and early-career academic sociologists who are disenchanted with the notion that social science can or should closely follow the natural science model and be conducted in an objective, value-neutral fashion.

WHY READ IT?

Although Bauman is not well-known in the US, he is highly regarded in Europe, and especially in Britain where he has been teaching and writing for more than 40 years. His ideas have been very influential, particularly with respect tomodernity and postmodernity -- or what he now calls "solid" modernity and "liquid" modernity. More importantly, Bauman has an interesting set of answers to the core questions posed in the book. At the risk of oversimplifying considerably, Bauman argues that to be useful sociology must perform the tasks set out by C. Wright Mills in "The Sociological Imagination" -- helping regular people to understand the connections between history and their biographies, and between public issues and their private troubles. Furthermore, he argues that we are in a world drowning in information; what people need is not more information, but rather stories that help people make sense of the world. These stories are only useful, however, to the extent that they are practical, and they are only practical to the extent that they expand people's agency -- their freedom to act. I'm not sure Bauman gives us (or can give us) enough guidance on how to construct such stories, but I do find this to be worthwhile food for thought.

WHY SKIP IT?

If you're not a social scientist, you're unlikely to find this book terribly compelling. Also, if you've read and liked Bauman's work, you probably know already what has to say about the social world, social science, and the place of social science in the social world. In addition, if you are strongly committed to the notion that it is possible to conduct social science within the confines of the natural science model, you will probably not be terribly convinced by anything Bauman has to say.

BOTTOM LINE?

"What Use is Sociology?" is short, provocative, and unusually easy to read (for a sociology text). Jacobsen and Tester may seem a bit fawning at times -- they obviously admire Bauman, and a bit more distance from their subject would have been a good thing -- but most of their questions are reasonable and their introduction is useful and insightful. I recommend the book to anyone who is unfamiliar with Bauman's work and is asking themselves the question posed in the book's title.

The Use of Sociology
By Lynn Ellingwood
In conversations with Michael Hvid and Keith Tester, sociologist Zygmunt Bauman explains why sociology is a necessary social science. Sociology is the study of society and social structures. It can study one's own society and make recommendations to governments and agencies which depend on their data. One might also ask why people fell it is so unnecessary to study society. Bauman suggests that one major reason to study society is to become a master of ourselves and not a victim of fate. As a sociology major, I never questioned that sociology was necessary or a great liberal arts college major. I learned many years ago as as. student how the current president, Ronald Reagan's call for building new prisons and harsher criminal penalties would affect the US. If a government builds prisons, there will always be a pressing need to fill them and it was true. The US has by far the highest incarceration rate in the world and the most expensive. Sociology is an interesting subject and very important.

Justify, the new code of education
By Jennifer Miller
I took sociology in college as an undergrad (probably about 10 years ago). While in the class, I never really understood what the point was and why this was separate from the cultural anthropology class that I also had to take. Both of them focused on the study of groups and how those groups formed/lived. As a doctoral student now, I have come to see differences between how sociology helps me as a teacher compared to other studies. In a time where liberal arts and "soft" sciences are called into question as their worthiness to continue for degrees, I am glad that this short book has come out. These conversations talk about how sociology is relevant within modern society and why it is necessary to continue as a science. There are some political talk, but mostly it's about the justification of studying how and why groups of people do things.

Review
"The value of this text lies in its attention to corporate responses to shifting consumption practices. The concepts are clear, the examples are engaging and Wikström clearly identifies how relationships between producer and consumer are being increasingly blurred due to inflexibility of these 'copyright industries'."
Sociology

"The Music Industry is a lucid and astute overview of what has happened to popular music since the mp3 met the Internet at the birth of Napster. It is the first scholarly book to make real sense of the present state of the music industry. By looking at the contemporary landscape of popular music from multiple perspectives, including the fan perspective, Patrik Wikstrom provides clear explanations for the consequences new digital media have had for music, musicians, and the recording industry."
Steve Jones, University of Illinois at Chicago

"Patrik Wikstrom does a brilliant job of explaining the wide-ranging digital-driven changes taking place in the popular music industry. Until recently it was controlled by a very few multinational corporations, but now artists, independent producers, and fans are freer to create the musicscapes they desire."
Richard Peterson, Vanderbilt University

Great snapshot of the future of the music industry
By Tama Leaver
Wikström has written an accessible and insightful overview of how the music industry has changed over the past few decades, characterising the current industry as a 'copyright industry' which has grappled with digital distribution and, in many ways, succeeded where film and television have yet to flourish. The book champions the fans and those musicians who have experiments with new distribution models, such as the Nine Inch Nails, but is balanced enough to give a good sense of why the industry has had real trouble adapting to the realities of digital distribution and the challenges of peer to peer technologies. A great overview, suitable for a generalist reader.

Dispossession: The Performative in the Political, by Judith Butler, Athena Athanasiou

Dispossession describes the condition of those who have lost land, citizenship, property, and a broader belonging to the world. This thought-provoking book seeks to elaborate our understanding of dispossession outside of the conventional logic of possession, a hallmark of capitalism, liberalism, and humanism. Can dispossession simultaneously characterize political responses and opposition to the disenfranchisement associated with unjust dispossession of land, economic and political power, and basic conditions for living?

In the context of neoliberal expropriation of labor and livelihood, dispossession opens up a performative condition of being both affected by injustice and prompted to act. From the uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa to the anti-neoliberal gatherings at Puerta del Sol, Syntagma and Zucchotti Park, an alternative political and affective economy of bodies in public is being formed. Bodies on the street are precarious - exposed to police force, they are also standing for, and opposing, their dispossession. These bodies insist upon their collective standing, organize themselves without and against hierarchy, and refuse to become disposable: they demand regard. This book interrogates the agonistic and open-ended corporeality and conviviality of the crowd as it assembles in cities to protest political and economic dispossession through a performative dispossession of the sovereign subject and its propriety.

the human spectacle
By Case Quarter
situated in the tradition of philosophical dialogue, noted philosopher, judith butler, and social anthropologist, athena athanasiou, range over a wide number of contemporary social topics, circling the globe with what they describe as `instances' of acts of resistance, `performatives', in political space.

there's no easy way to describe a performative. for the sake of entering the text, i'll quote judith butler, `We might say: the performative emerges precisely as the specific power of the precarious--unauthorized by existing legal regimes, abandoned by the law itself--to demand the end of their precarity.' the precarity before us, is dispossession. dispossession is of two versions, loss and affective. the loss of property, identity, rights, or homeland. the affective is psychic and emotional often resulting in a spontaneous unplanned and unintended action, and this version of dispossession leads to mental activity.

athanasiou's style, in particular, requires patience and diligence, her penchant for clustering abstract and collective nouns reshaping words grammatically into near neologisms, while managing the organization of the conversation with repetition and reminder. serving as a kind of participant interviewer, she opens the dialogue with an inquiry into aporetic dispossession and then takes her cues from judith butler, who as early as 1988 was writing about performatives.

no single word in their dialogue is pinned with one meaning, multiple meanings abound, with many words subjected to derridean word play. what begins as inquiry into, say, responsibility, leads to an inquiry into response, the discussion continues as an entwinement until some form of logic is perceived. language is silenced and silence becomes, as a form of resistance, language. some of the instances seem so sparse, almost to appear flimsy in content. i want to call them discrete connectives, engendering speculations of past and future, and point out the application of one of the discrete connections with an example.

athanasiou speaks of not moving as agency, as a form of resistance, instancing rosa parks' own words from her autobiography, parks' description of her not moving as saying she was tired, her being tired she clarifies as not a physical condition but a psychological condition, being tired, as not in the mood to tolerate the authority and laws avowing she must move, must make her seat available to a white person. but how is moving/not moving as agency, either as a rule of law or a personal act of resistance, enacted by a person with a disability? later butler explores a topic human animality. a remark by her, `...we cannot understand human life without understanding that its modes are connected up with other forms of life by which it is distinguished and with which it is continuous.' a conversation can pick up from here on disabled persons within precarious political situations and police dogs and seeing eye dogs.

some of the topics and persons mentioned are disposable people, occupied palestine, neoliberalism, the biopolitical, queer genealogy in the film Strella, directed by panos koutras, the philosophers, fanon and foucault, mourning, a street performance by mary zygouri, and the work of guatemalan performance artist regina josé galindo.

a good practice is to create a vocabulary list early in the reading, of how the authors, to nod toward the late poetry critic, john ciardi, `mean' their words. `catachresis' `precarity' althusser's `interpellation' `poietic' `teratological' are some of the terms used.

Judith Butler has been writing on neoliberal governmentality for some time now, but this book is unique in the sense that her work is literally put into conversation with Athena Athanasiou, an accomplished scholar of feminist and queer theory in her own right in her native Greece. The two met, we are told, in December 2009, when Butler delivered a series of talks in Greece (p. vii). From there Butler and Athanasiou corresponded "mainly on email" (p. x) about their shared theoretical interests and what they might have to say about ongoing social movements protesting neoliberal austerity, capitalist privatization, and various regimes of dispossession.

I was skeptical about this project at first insofar as most of it was composed remotely and not by way of face-to-face dialogue. But my prejudgment was quickly put to rest as I got into the substance and texture of Butler's and Athanasiou's exchanges, which manage to be conversational without sacrificing theoretical rigor. This was a welcome (and stark) contrast to Butler's staged dialogue with Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak (also published in book form), which I found pedantic rather than pedagogical. This book addresses similar issues to that previous work, but it is far superior in content and style.

Butler and Athanasiou cover terrain that scholars of neoliberalism (from anthropologists to queer theorists) will be generally familiar with: "precarity as a condition of induced inequality and destitution" (p. 20); "discursive configurations that pathologize and blame the victims [by] attribut[ing] dire economic conditions of poor people to their deficient or inept personalities" (p. 114); and "the idea that individual `responsibility' increases as social services and infrastructures fail, [with the consequence] that the domain of morality absorbs and deflects the economic and political crisis" (p. 103). But while these points may be familiar to some scholars, their compact, interrelated articulation in this book makes it a valuable resource for anyone invested/interested in the global Left's horizon of possibility. And that reach is not outside the realm of imagination: for as one chapter illuminates, recent EU and US protests have been marked by activists using "book shields" (titles by Adorno, Derrida, Woolf, Beckett, and Butler herself) to defend their collective body against police crackdowns (p. 189).

Beyond its synoptic, "usable" form, this book also adds to contemporary thought on neoliberalism a necessary theorization of performativity. Butler, of course, is well-regarded as a theorist of (gender) performativity, and here she and Athanasiou describe the performative dimensions of different forms of (neoliberal) resistance. In my opinion, Butler and Athanasiou are at their best when they theorize performativity alongside examples drawn from street protest, cinema, and performance art. Their dialogue on Panos Koutras's Strella (2009) features some of Butler's best writing on a cultural object in years, while their explication of Palestinian Queers for BDS offers one of the best critiques of homonationalism I've read.

Other, more abstract, examples falter, such as Butler and Athanasiou's distanced theorization of suicide bombing. And a few chapters, such as the one on "Sexual Dispossessions," detract from the volume's cohesiveness. Still, these are minor obstacles in an otherwise surprisingly lucid book. I recommend it to those interested in joining a dialogue on how we can imagine ways of resisting neoliberalism's total dominion over social and political life.

unfortunate dimension of the current real
By scarecrow
Judith Butler and Athena Athanasiou bring together fascinating dialogues to what has become permanent reality, the dispossession of the peoples of the earth:Land confiscated, property, abilities to work under any circumstance, children dispossessed of family and education. But physical dispossession is only one dimension, we have the dehumanizing, the loss of dignity to self.We have lost the ability to preserve ourselves down to "homo sacer",loss of appearance so we think. This is a massive subject chosen, one that will be discussed for time to come.

It is an eternal subject that simply morphs itself, as capital attempts to give sustenance to itself with agendas that only work for those who already possess most of the financial wealth of the globe. We have Old World agendas at work, dysfunctional governments of capital that can only attenuate the masses control them with draconian means, eradicating what may be the last vestige of humaness by taking the very land where they live and work away. . ..

Activist struggle is simply what we see,and these dialgoues respond to this reality but there are dark undercurrents here. These are what the two authors bring with great sensitivity to the surface of this dehumanizing process at work.
The lack of education, employment and or a viable future, acts as a continuous alienating function. There is then a permanent tension a negativity that in many ways spawns the creative dimension to people working, thinking, writing and rebelling.
The Chapter 10 here on responsiveness is eternal, and a means to educate across the globe by example,by walking together. and revealing the "impure" forms response may take to develop.
We are the "part of no part" and the "part of everything" simultaneously as said in identical contexts yet we are here ready to be human. Chapter 12, we name and re-name ourselves thru language, speaking to augment a human dimension with self-renewing performative politics.

What will serve to educate these dispossessed? what power is there?, Here the authors speak of the "responsible" when one's life is foreclosed. Are we counted,or merely expended through cyclical austerity measures.

Only then through the one in struggle we have self-creativity to recompose dignity,un-servitude brings freedom in fragments yet gives a "grace" to what is given in the process of people holding hands in struggle together, sharing a bottle of water, a piece of bread with the sulfur of the days violence still in the air.The bodies of the dispossess as Judith Butler has worked the "performivity",perhaps now developed on a global subject her "Bodies that Matter".

This body now is the cite where struggle and negativity plays itself out in the face of capital:,the Minotaur strikes those already dispossessed;only bodies and language we have now.Use it then for those who send out their truncheons mindlessly to preserve property that has been confiscated.

Self-organization is one means toward finding an alternative spoken here.Bodies that withstand multiple shocks over time, and anxiety that is passed, transmitted to generations as we have seen in the revolts around the globe. The meltdown of since 2008 only made what we have known of dispossession all the more visible.. . . Yet in the Badiou-ian sense this Subject is still in an infancy, still unformed along a gestation process prior. Becoming a Subject is eternal. We know the dispossessed will persist, capital "enables" it against itself, but can control its tensions, where power never shifts. The physicalness is well in hand.
Not that this dehumanizing process has ever lapsed or lessened since the post war era, it has merely morphed into non-subjectivied Subjects.
The prior neo-colonialist reality has simply takened on more sophisticate inter-governmental dimensions.

Paul Virilio has reminded us of the refugee movements of people persist with capital gloaming on land, property and the humanization that have given culture to the globe.
This reality certainly was intensified by the financial meltdown of 2008, but even prior with international capital unable to organize itself, instead runs the globe with blocks of power wherever capital can withstand augmented percentages of profit the Old-Fashion way.
Both authors here speak to each other here on the loss of land, the vulnerability we have of citizenship, property. Yet the great exodus of the globe is yet to be seen.. . .

The selected topics are tackled from a practitioner?s perspective, with questions at the end of each chapter to help explore and apply the material in more detail. A new chapter tackling the impact of globalization is welcomed. Heidegger: Thinking of Being (Key Contemporary Thinkers), by Lee Braver

Martin Heidegger is among the most important philosophers of the Twentieth Century. Within the continental tradition, almost every great figure has been deeply influenced by his work. For this reason, a full understanding of the course of modern philosophy is impossible without at least a basic grasp of Heidegger. Unfortunately, his work is notoriously difficult, both because of his innovative ideas and his difficult writing style.

In this compelling book, Lee Braver cuts through the jargon to present Heidegger’s ideas in clear English, using illuminating examples and explications of thorny passages. In so doing, he offers readers an accessible overview of Heidegger’s entire career. The first half of the book presents a guide through Being and Time, Heidegger’s early masterpiece, while the second half covers the key themes of his later writing, including technology, subjectivity, history, nihilism, agency, and the nature of thought itself. As Heidegger’s later work is deeply engaged with other philosophers, Braver explains the relevance of Plato, Descartes, Kant, and Nietzsche for Heidegger’s thought.

This book will be of great interest to students and scholars trying to find their way through Heidegger’s difficult ideas. Anyone interested in Twentieth Century continental philosophy must come to terms with Heidegger, and this book is the ideal place to begin.

Review
"Spinoza makes a very interesting distinction between the easy and the simple. Contrarily to easiness, simplicity is not the opposite of difficulty, but appears as its very expression. The most beautiful expression of the difficult is the simple. Braver's book is precisely simple in that sense. It presents Heideggerian thought in all its complexity in the most accessible and engaging way, so that it can speak to all. A phenomenal achievement."
Catherine Malabou, Kingston University

"Leave it to Lee Braver to give us an overview of Heidegger's thought that is both entertaining and consistently insightful. The conversational tone of his commentary is engaging, while each page reveals a lifetime of careful thought about Heidegger. This is the best general introduction to Heidegger for students and non-specialists I have seen in decades."
Charles Guignon, University of South Florida

It isn't as clearly written as it seems.
By Amazon Customer
Initially I thought this was a very clearly written and accessible. The author's style seemed chatty and down to earth giving explanations with examples from real life. However the author continually brings in Heideggerian terminology without properly introducing it. He also has a strange way of layering levels of complexity upon complexity, in short his apparent clarity of exposition is misleading.
I've read Richard Polt's book on Heidegger twice and found it very clear and intelligible. I'm going back to give it a third read and then I'll come back to this book. Hopefully I'll make some sort of fist of it. If not then its another donation to Oxfam.

Full grasp of Heidegger's thought guaranteed !
By Ronald Fernandez
I was under the impression (wrong) that I had figured out Heidegger. After reading Braver's book I get the feeling that NOW I do. There is a special quality to Lee Braver's scholarship that illuminates everything around it. His other two books are also great incursions into contemporary continental philosophy full of insights and "clearings". Sites one thought familiar suddenly appear in a new light after Braver's appraisal, as is the case with the ontological difference or the account of being-in-the-world. And all of this in a most clear, orderly and readable style that does not renounce width or depth. This is definitely the best introduction to Heidegger that I have come across ever. And since he is the entrance gate to contemporary philosophy, this book is also a most appropriate way to get started with knowledge about the field. And since Braver has written two other books about continental philosophy, I feel one would be well advised to read them too. The end result will be nothing less than enhanced knowledge and sheer joy of reading |

This is a very good presentation of Heidegger... Being and Time is quite impenetrable to non-specialists.... I have read many attempts to interpret Heidegger... This is one of the best.

"Rotberg's contribution is timely and reflects the decades of work he has done on the continent."
LSE Review of Books

"As world renowned expert on African affairs Robert Rotberg expertly shows, Africa may be poised to deliver real rewards to its long suffering citizens but it faces critical new crises."
Africa Confidential

"Rotberg's work is an elegant tour de force, sweeping all contemporary Africa into its view and establishing not just the continent's well-known faults but the real hopes for its future. Honest and provocative, Rotberg has combined deep knowledge with real common sense."
Stephen Chan, School of Oriental and African Studies

"Robert Rotberg has been one of the leading chroniclers of sub-Saharan Africa for decades. Africa Emerges is a comprehensive book that manages to survey a continent while being sensistive to nuance. Rotberg in an optimistic but unromantic manner paints a possible future for African countries that would, if adopted, transform the lives of tens of millions of people."
Jeffrey Herbst, Colgate University

Africa Emerges - but from what and into what? A triumph of hope over experience in Robert Rotberg's new assessment of the continent - By Keith Somerville

Posted on September 4, 2013 by African Arguments Editor

Robert Rotberg, Africa Emerges Consummate Challenges, Abundant Opportunities, Cambridge, Polity, 2013. ISBN-13: 978-0-456-6163-6 (pbk), £17.99.

"Propelled to some extent by significant drivers of economic uplift such as the dramatic spread of mobile telephone capabilities and China's pulsating appetite for African resources, sub-Saharan Africa, almost for the first time in more than 60 years, has a golden interlude in which it and its peoples can take advantage of abundant new opportunities". This is a fine and lofty start to a book by an academic with an established reputation as a researcher and commentator on the continent. Components of this golden interlude, it seems, are the "startling improvements in child mortality", the decline in dictatorships and the drop in deaths from civil conflicts, which mean that Africa is no longer the basket-case of the world. But the basket-case, dark continent approach to Africa was always questionable and selective, so from the beginning I was inclined to ask from what Africa is emerging and into what? While reviewing this book, I began to wonder if Rotberg's Africa exists in a parallel universe where the seemingly endless war and suffering in eastern DR Congo, the swirling conflicts across Central Africa, and the continuing, crushing poverty afflicting most ordinary Africans do not exist.

Further into the book, I found sourced and well-set out accounts of many of the problems and prospects facing Africa. The author discusses very real, positive developments and the constant striving of ordinary Africans for a better life, as well as some of the negative factors that threaten the progress of economies. In particular, I found Rotberg's discussion of the development of African-originated answers to the questions of how to develop strongly-rooted systems of accountable and responsive government and how to overcome Africa's deepening dependence on exports of primary or semi-processed commodities compelling. These parts are interesting and informative but are marred by concluding sections in most chapters that, I'm sure with the best of intentions, accentuate the positives unrealistically and gloss over the continuing, major structural problems facing African peoples. There are rose-tinted references to the development of democracy in countries like Ghana (where the courts are deliberating on whether the last elections were a massive fraud) and Namibia (SWAPO is perhaps not the best model for democratic development). There seems to be a naïve acceptance that holding elections once every four or five years is a measure of real accountability, and a naïve belief in the self-serving opinions of Tony Blair about Africa's progress, the credit for which Blair rather apportions to himself on an undeserved basis.

There are too many conclusions that claim progress that remains less than certain and may, like periods of African growth in the past, be the result of temporary surges in commodity demand and prices that mean a rise in export income but no deep or lasting development of the economies as a whole. The author's examination of China's role in Africa, for example, skates over the trade imbalances, the dumping of cheap manufactures that destroy local industries and the use of Chinese rather than local labour.

When lauding growth in many states' GDPs in recent years, too little account is taken of how much of that growth is solely attributable to primary commodities and how little to domestic agricultural or industrial production, how weak the tax bases of most countries are and how a drop in prices could lead to another crash. There is no reference to Rick Rowden's recent work, which points out that export-led growth does not mean wider economic growth, rising employment opportunities or sustainable development. Rotberg would have done well to reference works like this to temper the insupportable optimism that he exhibits. Too often possibilities for development are made out to be real progress with phrases like "may be able to make major transformations" - but how and when is not then detailed or supported by credible evidence. Hope is good but it needs to be supported by collateral. There are also occasional flights of fancy that verge on the ridiculous and stereotypical. Africa does have wildlife that lives in such close proximity to humans that it can damage crops or threaten livestock, but Africa's agricultural problems are not seriously worsened when "elephants trample village gardens and lions and leopards take cattle" (p.43) - these may cause localized want, but are not serious obstacles to development.

When it comes to conflict and governance, the book has a worrying tendency to reduce too much to the whims and evil agency of leaders and the failure of Africa to measure up to the demands of Eurocentric, post-Westphalian, Weberian nation-state concept. This level of analysis is not helpful and takes little account of the interplay between structure and agency in Africa - with one channeling the other but in turn being altered by the flow of agency and events. Instead, there is the simple answer that Africa's problems are not to be blamed on colonial legacies, inappropriate borders, conflict between peoples, competition for resources or avarice of elites but on "the failure of the modern nation-state in Africa" (p. 70). But why did the nation-state fail? This is not adequately addressed nor is there real attention to the importance of other, less formal models in Africa. He lauds governance in Botswana without explaining why this has been successful. He also totally ignores important developments such as the grassroots, indigenous construction (free from most external influence) of accountable but not Western-style forms of government in Somaliland or the success of power-sharing as a means of curtailing conflict in Burundi.

The author quite reasonably holds up Nelson Mandela and Seretse Khama - both estimable men worthy of emulation - as leaders who could provide the models for future politicians. In so doing, however, he does not say how and why they were successful as icons of leadership and he ignores the sadly short-lived "rainbow nation" euphoria in South Africa and the growth of corruption during Mandela's period in office. While Mandela was an international statesman, apostle of reconciliation and globally admired force for unity and forgiveness, the Mbeki-run administration became more distant and unaccountable, corrupt and self-serving under his rule. The book concludes with the bizarre thought that "It may not be fanciful to envisage schools for political leaders capable of building the kinds of capacities that are now in short supply. Successful former leaders from Botswana, say, could instruct, as could those responsible leaders who may have served in many countries as vice presidents or cabinet ministers" (p.215). Surely, good political leaders, like Mandela and Khama, emerge not from some leader factory (and who decides on the blueprint for the ideal leader?) but from the people of the countries they govern. Leaders do not and should not achieve office through graduation from some sort of political polytechnic. Besides, can you see Goodluck Jonathan or Salva Kiir sitting and being lectured on integrity and democracy by Festus Mogae or Gaositwe Chiepe? This flight of fancy is redolent of a "one-size fits all" approach to Africa and it exposes the lack of detailed differentiation of the progress in some areas and the decline in others - such as the failure of Nigeria to surmount the problems of disunity, violence and corruption, the inability of Zimbabweans to rid themselves of the curse of Mugabe and the continuing decline of South Africa into corruption, incompetence and unaccountability.

Security and Global Health, by Stefan Elbe

Every era, it is said, has its defining malady. What will be ours? Will it be a new human pandemic caused by an animal-borne infectious disease, such as swine flu? Will it be a lethal microbe like anthrax deliberately released by terrorists bent on causing mass civilian casualties? Or will it be one of our new ‘lifestyle' diseases - the epidemics of smoking, obesity and excessive alcohol consumption that threaten to engulf modern societies? Perhaps our era will even be remembered for its tragic neglect of certain health issues - endemic diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS that continue to ravage millions in developing countries.

In this book Stefan Elbe shows that in the new millennium international politics is no longer characterized by its preoccupation with a single disease, but precisely by its need to urgently confront what is now an epidemic of epidemics. Over the past decade a whole host of diverse global health issues have raised the highest levels of political concern, provoking governments and international institutions to tackle such health threats through the prism of security - be it national security, biosecurity, or human security. This convergence between health issues and security concerns has also produced the new notion of health security, which has already begun to shape the way international health policy is formulated.

The intersection of the worlds of health and security is beginning to change our very ideas of what security means and how it is achieved. At the outset of the twenty-first century, practising security increasingly demands that citizens become patients, that states resemble huge hospitals, and that security itself becomes a technology of medical control. It is this transformation of security, Elbe argues in an innovative and engaging re-conceptualization of the health-security nexus, that marks nothing short of the medicalization of security.

Review
'Overall, this is a very good book, containing sustained discussions on important dimensions of health security. It has the potential to inform transdisciplinary debates and provide foci for research in many areas.'
International Sociology

'Professor Elbe has provided an important resource in this well-written and documented book É In it, he explores the evolution of human health security, its medicalization, and its likely impact É Through a series of case examples, and references to the work of several of the best thinkers in this field, he develops his argument about the seemingly inexorable march of medicalization as the means of achieving human health security, and points to a future that is likely to be dominated by the practice of technical medical approaches and pharmaceutical interventions.'
Sarita Bhalotra, Brandeis University

'Every now and then a new book comes along that challenges us to think more deeply about an issue, to consider more carefully the choices we make and their impact. This book is just such a book. With this new work on the medicalization of security, Elbe has once again produced an insightful piece of work that will no doubt prove a reference point for policy-makers, academics, practitioners, and students, for years to come.'
Adam Kamradt-Scott, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine

'This is an excellent book which provides an authoritative introduction to the subject coupled with a challenging and original new line of thinking about the problem of securing global health.'
Colin McInnes, Aberystwyth University

'Stefan Elbe has written a lucid and learned examination of the debate surrounding the securitization of health in the modern era. A fascinating contribution to the increasingly salient discourse on health and global governance.'
Andrew Price-Smith, The Colorado College

Timber, by Peter Dauvergne, Jane Lister

Timber is a vital resource that is all around us. It is the house that shelters us, the furniture we relax in, the books we read, the paper we print, the disposable diapers for our babies, and the boxes that contain our cereal, detergent, and new appliances. The way we produce and consume timber, however, is changing. With international timber companies and big box discount retailers increasingly controlling through global commodity chains where and how much timber is traded, the world's remaining old-growth forests, particularly in the developing world, are under threat of disappearing - all for the price of a consumer bargain.

This trailblazing book is the first to expose what's happening inside corporate commodity chains with conclusions that fundamentally challenge our understanding of how and why deforestation persists. Authors Peter Dauvergne and Jane Lister reveal how timber now moves through long and complex supply chains from the forests of the global South through the factories of emerging economies like China to the big box retail shelves of Europe and North America. Well-off consumers are getting unprecedented deals. But the social and environmental costs are extraordinarily high as corporations mine the world's poorest regions and most vulnerable ecosystems.

The growing power of big retail within these commodity chains is further increasing South-North inequities and unsustainable global consumption. Yet, as this book's highly original analysis uncovers, it is also creating some intriguing opportunities to promote more responsible business practices and better global forest governance.

Review
"A skillful and fascinating introduction to the way we produce and consume timber. This challenging piece of research will be of great interest to academics, economists, businessmen and alert consumers."
Global Journal

"In what increasingly reads like a Sherlock Holmes thriller, the authors unravel the alliances and corruption of the giant multinational players involved in the rape of the forests."
Irish Examiner

"A rich, detailed, and insightful account of the power of big box retailers within global forest commodity chains. By offering an intriguing empirical account of the power of big box retailers within global commodity chains, the book speaks beyond the subject of timber to inform more theoretical discussions of corporate power in a globalized economy."
Review of Policy Research

"A great resource for improving the role retailers and consumers play in the management of the world's forests."
Compendium Newsletter

"A very good introduction to the timber industry."
Environment and Planning C

"A welcome - and recommended - contribution to considerations of the challenges facing current and future forest use."
Chartered Forester

"Flows well in leading to its conclusion. Unlike many critiques, Timber provides a plausible answer to the problem it presents."
Choice

"An interesting and, in parts, troubling book on the nature of deforestation throughout the world, that holds relevance for everyone today."
Furniture and Cabinetmaking

"Timber uncovers the dark world of commodity chains that link the wood in our lives to global deforestation, and offers rays of hope for promising change. It elicits not simply intellectual engagement but deep gratitude toward the authors for their penetrating research, political insights and clarity of expression. The book should be required reading for everyone."
Paul Wapner, American University, Washington DC

"A deep and incisive expose of the roles that timber and retail interests play in driving deforestation, the enormous economic power they wield in the market place and the tactics they use to influence small firms. The book speaks beyond the subject of timber to provide an original and thoughtful commentary on how international commodity chains shape not only the global economy but the global environment."
David Humphreys, Open University

"A brilliant and powerful book that allows us to see the forest for the trees. Its stunning exposè is a must-read for scholars and practitioners seeking a more promising and sustainable future."
Ben Cashore, Yale University

"Fascinating ... This book is an essential source of objective knowledge on the role that industry, retailers and consumers play in determining whether the world's forests are adequately managed."
Michael Jenkins, President, Forest Trends
