Fractured Identities: Changing Patterns of Inequality, by Harriet Bradley

The gap between rich and poor, included and excluded, advantaged and disadvantaged is steadily growing as inequality becomes one of the most pressing issues of our times. The new edition of this popular text explores current patterns of inequality in the context of increasing globalization, world recession and neoliberal policies of austerity. Within a framework of intersectionality, Bradley discusses various theories and concepts for understanding inequalities of class, gender, ethnicity and age, while an entirely new chapter touches on the social divisions arising from disabilities, non-heterosexual orientations and religious affiliation.

Bradley argues that processes of fracturing, which complicate the way we as individuals identify and locate ourselves in relation to the rest of society, exist alongside a tendency to social polarization: at one end of the social hierarchy are the super-rich; at the other end, long-term unemployment and job insecurity are the fate of many, especially the young. In the reordering of the social hierarchy, members of certain ethnic minority groups, disabled people and particular segments of the working class suffer disproportionately, while prevailing economic conditions threaten to offset the gains made by women in past decades. Fractured Identities shows how only by understanding and challenging these developments can we hope to build a fairer and more socially inclusive society.

Review

"Bradley successfully combines political critique and trenchant scholarship in this up-to-the minute revision of her now classic text. Her focus is firmly on increasing inequality and polarization, in all their dimensions, in the context of globalization and the entrenchment of austerity and individualism. Her arguments are accessible, engaging and convincing. The book makes an important contribution to the resurgence of class analysis, and will be widely read."
Miriam Glucksmann, University of Essex

"Harriet Bradley’s new edition of Fractured Identities synthesises the changes consequent upon globalisation, the War on Terror, and changing demographics since the first edition with her clear and coherent account of the classic sociological work.  Any student using the book will be extremely fortunate:  it is innovative, current, and classic."
Sara Delamont, Cardiff University

From the Back Cover
Despite claims about the "classless society," modern industrial societies such as Britain and America are characterized by widening gaps between rich and poor. At the same time, inequalities of class overlap with other inequalities, such as those of ethnicity or gender.

Recent research in sociology has highlighted the growing complexity of patterns of stratification and the interplay between different aspects of inequality. This book offers a comprehensive introduction to past and current theories of stratification and inequality. It pulls together work in the areas of class, gender, race and age, locating the analysis within current debates over modernity and post-modernity.

Separate chapters on class, gender, race and age provide overviews of debates in a way designed to be accessible to students and also how these four dimensions of inequality act upon one another. Unlike many other texts, the book covers both the modernist approaches derived from the sociological classics and newer contributions influenced by post-modernism and post-structuralism.

While accepting the postmodern view that societies are becoming fragmented and social identities more fluid, "Fractured Identities" concludes that modernist insights are still vital. Modern societies are marked by "both" fragmentation and polarization.

Toleration, by Andrew Jason Cohen

In this engaging and comprehensive introduction to the topic of toleration, Andrew Jason Cohen seeks to answer fundamental questions, such as: What is toleration? What should be tolerated? Why is toleration important?

Beginning with some key insights into what we mean by toleration, Cohen goes on to investigate what should be tolerated and why. We should not be free to do everythingÑmurder, rape, and theft, for clear examples, should not be tolerated. But should we be free to take drugs, hire a prostitute, or kill ourselves? Should our governments outlaw such activities or tolerate them? Should they tolerate “outsourcing” of jobs or importing of goods or put embargos on other countries? Cohen examines these difficult questions, among others, and argues that we should look to principles of toleration to guide our answers. These principles tell us when limiting freedom is acceptableÑthat is, they indicate the proper limits of toleration. Cohen deftly explains the main principles on offer and indicates why one of these stands out from the rest.

This wide-ranging new book on an important topic will be essential reading for students taking courses in philosophy, political science and religious studies.

Review
"Cohen tells us that the history of liberalism is the history of toleration. The claim survives reflection: few events in human history have been more important than when your religion ceased to be regarded as a good reason to kill you. Toleration is remarkably bold yet remarkably engaging, simply written, and brimming with insight."
David Schmidtz, Center for the Philosophy of Freedom

"Cohen's book provides an exemplary analysis of what toleration is (and is not), and a lucid assessment of the reasons - strong and weak - why it is so valuable."
Hillel Steiner, Professor Emeritus, University of Manchester and Research Professor, University of Arizona

"Written in an accessible style and unafraid to embrace controversy, Andrew Cohen provides a lively and challenging introduction to the meaning and justification of toleration. He robustly defends his own principles of toleration, and his conclusions about some of the examples he discusses, along with the arguments in favour of them, are especially likely to stimulate debate and discussion, both among students and their teachers."
John Horton, Keele University

"The iron-fisted King Feris treated everyone equally but tolerated little, while King Juris tolerated everything except for harm to others. Who would not prefer King Juris? And who would argue that toleration is not important? Andrew Cohen's snappy, often amusing, style makes the issue come alive, and is more effective than a straightforward argument for the importance of toleration. Cohen also challenges society-wide shibboleths by arguing that drug use, pornography, and prostitution by and with consenting adults ought to be tolerated, but corporations as they are currently instituted ought not. The book is a fine introduction to toleration."

A detailed and accessible look at tolerance
By Amazon Customer
"If the young are to be instructed at all, it seems to me that they ought to be instructed in the high human value of this toleration. They should be taught what they learn by experience in the school yard: that human beings differ enormously, one from the other, and that it is stupid and imprudent for A to try to change B. They should be taught that mutual confidence and good will are worth all the laws ever heard of, ghostly or secular, and that one man who minds his own business is more valuable to the world than 10,000 cocksure moralists." H.L. Mencken

One of the great mysteries of our world is how it suddenly became so rich. For over 50,000 years of human existence, humans were poor. Only a small elite could raise itself, but only on the backs of everyone else. Then something mysterious happened and over the last two hundred years, but a blink of the last 50,000 years, the world became much richer. About forty times richer in the leading developed countries.

Though there are no clear answers about what happened to trigger this massive, wonderful and ongoing rise in human prosperity, values surely have something to do with it. Tolerance must be among the necessary values.

This scholarly yet admirably accessible work of philosophy describes, evaluates and dissects tolerance with clarity, care and rigour.

Tolerance is the virtue in the middle of the spectrum, with agreement on one side and opposition on the other. As defined by Dr. Cohen, tolerance does not imply agreement. Indeed, disagreement is an essential element of tolerance, for you can not tolerate what you don't disagree with. Not opposing what you disagree with is what makes it tolerance, exactly as you hope another would not oppose you if they disagreed with you. Imagine the breakthrough in human relations to simply live and let live, even if one disagrees with another's choice of religion, marriage partner, customs or politics?

Like Goldilocks' porridge, to be effective tolerance has to be just right. At one extreme, tolerance fails to oppose evil, while at the other, tolerance opposes good. The harm principle is key to striking a balance. Outside of harm, none of the other possible norms considered by Dr. Cohen strike the right balance. Harm, not offence, is what justifies an end to toleration and the beginning of opposition.

Finally, Dr. Cohen considers toleration in the context of children, animals, the environment and social groups, including countries and corporations.

Overall, this book is a worthy addition to the body of knowledge that grapples with the challenge of how we all might live together such that all of us achieve our fullest potential.

Understand toleration, its justification, value, and limits.
By Shawn Klein
Andrew J. Cohen’s Toleration starts with the “aim to provide a clear and lively introduction to the issues surrounding toleration” (1). He successfully, in my view, achieves this aim. He grounds the concept of toleration historically in the history of western liberalism. Then, after a theoretical interlude, he presents several different principles that (might) ground and guide toleration. The most important of these is the Harm Principle. Cohen’s account of toleration, unsurprisingly, is rooted largely (and rightly in my view) in Mill’s On Liberty. He closes with an analysis of the general value and good of toleration. All in all, it is clear and it is lively; it is written, for the most part, in a direct and accessible way. So much so that this would make a great text for an introduction to political philosophy class.

I say “for the most part” above because there were a few sections that got bogged down in a bit. First, the theoretical section of chapter 2 seems to play more to a particular trend in professional political philosophy. The value of this chapter in relation to the rest of book was unclear to me. Second, Cohen’s discusses an argument for basing toleration on a principle of benefiting others (4B). This was the one section of the book I found hard to follow; the argument here being opaque. This might be much more to do with the difficulty of trying to articulate a view that is itself unclear than to a deficiency on Cohen’s part.

Cohen is careful to distinguish toleration from relativism, subjectivism, or non-judgmentalism. In fact, Cohen intends his view to be universal and it is based on a kind of objective morality. Moreover, the very idea or need for toleration depends on the prior fact of having judged someone (or his or her actions) to be objectionable.
;
Although relatively short (156 pp), Cohen’s book covers a lot of ground. It is a useful book for those interested in understand better the concept of toleration, its justification, its value, and its limits.

Beyond Consumer Capitalism: Media and the Limits to Imagination, by Justin Lewis

Consumer capitalism dominates our economy, our politics and our culture. Yet there is a growing body of research from a range of disciplines that suggests that consumer capitalism may be past its sell-by date.

Beyond Consumer Capitalism begins by showing how, for people in the developed world, consumer capitalism has become economically and environmentally unsustainable and is no longer able to deliver its abiding promise of enhancing quality of life . This cutting-edge book then asks why we devote so little time and effort to imagining other forms of human progress. The answer, Lewis suggests, is that our cultural and information industries limit rather than stimulate critical thinking, keeping us on the treadmill of consumption and narrowing our vision of what constitutes progress. If we are to find a way out of this cul de sac, Lewis argues, we must begin by analysing the role of media in consumer capitalism and changing the way we organize media and communications. We need a cultural environment that encourages rather than stifles new ideas about what guides our economy and our society.

Timely and compelling, Beyond Consumer Capitalism will have strong appeal to students and scholars of media studies, cultural studies and consumer culture.

Review
"Examines with eloquence and erudition the rampant consumer capitalism and persistent neo-liberalism of contemporary society and investigates the media’s collusion in this state of affairs. This is a book for our times."
James Curran, Goldsmiths, University of London

"A masterpiece. With panache and vision, Lewis makes a powerful case for the severe limitations of contemporary capitalism for a sustainable or humane society and he locates the commercial media's fingerprints all over the rotting corpse. Lewis provides a powerful critique and also points towards a way out. Elegantly written and with a sweeping command of the relevant literature, Beyond Consumer Capitalism is a book I will use in my classes; it should be required reading for young people wanting to understand our predicament."
Robert W. McChesney, University of Illinois

"Justin Lewis is one of the world's most acute observers of contemporary cultural politics. Effortlessly blending political economy, textual analysis and participant observation, his latest book alerts us, in an incisive but always humane way, to the excesses of consumption. This is an instant classic with abiding lessons for us all."
Toby Miller, University of California Riverside

Rural People and Communities in the 21st Century: Resilience and Transformation, by David L. Brown, Kai A. Schafft

Rural people and communities continue to play important social, economic and environmental roles at a time in which societies are rapidly urbanizing, and the identities of local places are increasingly subsumed by flows of people, information and economic activity across global spaces. However, while the organization of rural life has been fundamentally transformed by institutional and social changes that have occurred since the mid-twentieth century, rural people and communities have proved resilient in the face of these transformations.

This book examines the causes and consequences of major social and economic changes affecting rural communities and populations during the first decades of the twenty-first century, and explores policies developed to ameliorate problems or enhance opportunities. Primarily focused on the U.S. context, while also providing international comparative discussion, the book is organized into five sections each of which explores both socio-demographic and political economic aspects of rural transformation. It features an accessible and up-to-date blend of theory and empirical analysis, with each chapter's discussion grounded in real-life situations through the use of empirical case-study materials.

Rural People and Communities in the 21st Century is intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in rural sociology, community sociology, rural and/or population geography, community development, and population studies.

Review
"With a half century of rural research between them, Kai Schafft and David Brown offer a sweeping assessment of the present and future challenges facing rural communities. They argue for the continued importance of rural communities in an increasingly urbanized world, and convey how urgently the United States needs a comprehensive rural policy."
Agriculture and Human Values

"Will leadership carry through on developing a clear set of goals and strategies, designed to accommodate the dramatic variations found across rural America, for achieving them? Will policy makers respond to and shape change that gives at least equal play to social justice, political regulation and sustainability as it does to economic efficiency? This book provides an essential foundation that brings us one step closer to being able to answer 'yes' to these questions."
Social Forces

"Well structured and clear in its arguments, outlining different aspects of life in rural areas: their communities and institutions, their populations and their economics. Rural and urban areas are compared and the development of rural environments over the years is outlined. The array of topics covered in the book is impressive and it is clear that the research done by the authors is vast and the level of details is meticulous."
The Kelvingrove Review

“Brown and Schafft detail the challenges of persistence and change facing rural people and places. Their call for a first-ever holistic, comprehensive rural policy for the United States should be, must be, a policy and political rallying cry for all concerned with the sustainable development of rural communities and regions in the 21st century.”
Theodore R. Alter, Co-Director, Center for Economic and Community Development, The Pennsylvania State University

“In this fast-paced global environment, it is good to be reminded of the substantive contributions that rural people have made to the well-being of our world. Brown and Schafft pursue a balanced assessment of the problems that beset many parts of rural America today, and comment on the urgency of creating a national policy and mix of programs that build on the strengths of rural people and communities. Yes, rural America matters and thanks to Brown and Schafft, we have important insights on the smart investments that must be made if we hope to ensure its long-term vitality and sustainability.”
Lionel J. “Bo” Beaulieu, Mississippi State University

“This volume is necessary reading for anyone seeking to understand the contours of change in rural America over the past 50 years. It provides a masterful overview of key dimensions of social, economic, and environmental changes, offers theoretical tools by which to explain these changes, and raises provocative questions about the future of rural America.”
Linda Lobao, The Ohio State University, Columbus

From the Back Cover

It features an accessible and up-to-date blend of theory and empirical analysis, with each chapter’s discussion grounded in real-life situations through the use of empirical case-study materials.

Rural People and Communities in the 21st Century is intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in rural sociology, community sociology, rural and/or population geography, community development, and population studies.

Culture and Cognition: Patterns in the Social Construction of Reality (Cultural Sociology), by Wayne H. Brekhus

How does culture shape our thinking? In what ways do our social and cultural worlds enter into our mental worlds? How do the communities we belong to influence what we notice and what we ignore? What cultural variation do we see in cognition? What general patterns do we see across this diversity and variation?

In this lively and engaging book, Wayne H. Brekhus shows us the many ways that culture influences our cognitive thought processes. Drawing on a wide range of fascinating examples, such as how members of different subcultures perceive danger and safety, how cultures variably classify and perceptually weight race, how social actors use and present identity as a strategic resource, and how people across different organizational settings experience time, Brekhus takes us on a creative, diverse, and insightful tour of the sociocultural character of cognition.

Culture and Cognition: Patterns in the Social Construction of Reality offers an invaluable survey of a wide-ranging body of research in the sociology of culture and cognition that will be an inviting resource for upper-level undergraduates, graduate students, and established research scholars alike.

Gender, War, and Conflict (Gender and Global Politics), by Laura Sjoberg

From Pakistan to Chechnya, Sri Lanka to Canada, pioneering women are taking their places in formal and informal military structures previously reserved for, and assumed appropriate only for men. Women have fought in wars, either as women or covertly dressed as men, throughout the history of warfare, but only recently have they been allowed to join state militaries, insurgent groups, and terrorist organizations in unprecedented numbers.

This begs the question - how useful are traditional gendered categories in understanding the dynamics of war and conflict? And why are our stories of gender roles in war typically so narrow? Who benefits from them? In this illuminating book, Laura Sjoberg explores how gender matters in war-making and war-fighting today. Drawing on a rich range of examples from conflicts around the world, she shows that both women and men play many more diverse roles in wars than either media or scholarly accounts convey. Gender, she argues, can be found at every turn in the practice of war; it is crucial to understanding not only ‘what war is’, but equally how it is caused, fought and experienced.

With end of chapter questions for discussion and guides to further reading, this book provides the perfect introduction for students keen to understand the multi-faceted role of gender in warfare. Gender, War and Conflict will challenge and change the way we think about war and conflict in the modern world.

Review
''Laura Sjoberg has written a valuable, teachable and up-to-the-minute gender-smart book about war. With its mix of gritty case studies and Big Questions, Gender, War and Conflict offers lucky readers the tools to reassess mainstream International Relations' theories and to start fashioning explanations of their own.''
Cynthia Enloe, Clark University

"Laura Sjoberg's book is a feminist international relations primer for the real world. She shows that we can’t understand - let alone end - wars and conflicts if we don’t understand the masculinities and femininities that fuel them.  This is the book that everyone - students, academics, and policy-makers - needs to read."
Jacqui True, Monash University

This is an amazing book for those who are interested in the topic. It might be beneficial to know background knowledge of the subject since this is more academic, but not necessary. At the end of each chapter there are other books that the author suggests for further reading if it interests you!
Really interesting book and a very easy read.

Too academic
By dhasenan
This is a rather academic approach to the topic and seems mostly disconnected from anything practical. If you want to know how women are involved in wars, you should look elsewhere. If you want to learn that the real reason that countries go to war is because they take on gender roles, with poor justification for this claim, this book is for you.

The Causes of Structural Unemployment: Four Factors that Keep People from the Jobs they Deserve (Work & Society), by Thomas Janoski, David

There is a specter haunting advanced industrial countries: structural unemployment. Recent years have seen growing concern over declining jobs, and though corporate profits have picked up after the Great Recession of 2008, jobs have not. It is possible that “jobless recoveries” could become a permanent feature of Western economies.

This illuminating book focuses on the employment futures of advanced industrial countries, providing readers with the sociological imagination to appreciate the bigger picture of where workers fit in the new international division of labor. The authors piece together a puzzle that reveals deep structural forces underlying unemployment: skills mismatches caused by a shift from manufacturing to service jobs; increased offshoring in search of lower wages; the rise of advanced communication and automated technologies; and the growing financialization of the global economy that aggravates all of these factors. Weaving together varied literatures and data, the authors also consider what actions and policy initiatives societies might take to alleviate these threats.

Addressing a problem that should be front and center for political economists and policymakers, this book will be illuminating reading for students of the sociology of work, labor studies, inequality, and economic sociology.

Review

''The authors deftly integrate sociological, political, and economic perspectives to highlight the major changes in the structure of labor markets that are responsible for the upsurge in the structural unemployment and economic inequality that haunt the contemporary United States.''
Arne L. Kalleberg, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

''The Causes of Structural Unemployment is a comprehensive look at the causes of long-term structural unemployment in affluent industrialized nations. It combines and illustrates how individual biographies are tied up to larger social and economic processes - how the single-minded focus on shareholder value and market manipulations destroys the labor market for good jobs.''
Kevin T. Leicht, University of Iowa

This is the right book for you
By Neal Reynolds
If you like an academic approach to the problem of unemployment, you've found the right one. If, however, you prefer a clear, concise, easy-to-read approach, you've still found the right book. This is the right book whoever you are if you're seeking more understanding of structural unemployment. Very highly recommended.

A "must read" for anyone searching for a deeper understanding of unemployment and the future of work.
By AmazonJavaJunki
This book is written in a more academic style but that should not deter the reader from pursuing this worthy and comprehensive examination of structural unemployment. The author takes great pains to provide ample definitions and examples throughout. As a business writer and instructor, I tend to read a book while making notes or presenting questions that would likely come from my students in the margins...in each and every case, the questions were shortly addressed in the text making this an accessible book for novice or advanced reader alike.

The book is well researched, provides excellent resources throughout and uses solid judgement before coming to a conclusion. It is this last statement which should strike fear in the hearts of some...while spurring a flair of excitement in others because this time things really are different. Structural unemployment is dramatically different than a simple economic downturn with profound implications for college students and retirees alike. Those with marginal skills who are unable to retrain or keep up with the pace of change are likely to face serious consequences. Competition among the college educated is about to heat-up to unprecedented levels thanks to the ability to outsource and offshore formerly secure white collar positions. Even direct services will be further pressed upon thanks to the evolution of "just in time inventory" practices toward the newly emerging "just in time" staffing practices such as those utilized by Walmart.

A "must read" for anyone searching for a deeper understanding of unemployment and the future of work.

Incisive analyses but proposed remedies have been floated before
By OnceMore
The authors provide very good examples of how the problems discussed in this book are impacting a wide variety of people that include both the highly and less highly educated. Assembly-line workers who are hanging on to their manufacturing jobs by the thinnest threads will find it difficult to get another similarly-paying job if they're replaced by robots or lower-paid workers elsewhere. Professionals such as radiologists and lawyers are vulnerable also because they can now be replaced by lower-paid offshore professionals working with tools and technologies that make the affected research and x-ray interpretation jobs (of a lawyer and a radiologist, respectively) easier to perform offsite. In all cases, if the displaced workers' current skills and/or specialties are irrelevant to the jobs that may be open to them, they may remain unemployed, or may have to accept lower-paying jobs.

The authors' analyses of what's keeping good people from getting and / or holding on to good-paying jobs are comprehensive and incisive, but their proposed remedies -- which include making improvements to our educational system and jobs training, creation, and placement programs, and making businesses live up to societal obligations by paying adequate taxes instead of skirting them through creative accounting practices -- have been floated before, and yet, they have not gained much traction, so perhaps a good follow-up to this book might be one that analyzes why there's been little progress on these fronts (i.e., what are the challenges and what could help overcome those challenges).
