Covers a lot of ground regarding modern relationships

Prior to this book, I had read another book relationships that seemed almost quaint and gossipy in comparison. While the Becks's "Distant Love" isn't full of advice on 'how to make your man happy' (and thank goodness for that), it is a very interesting read on how families today are increasingly international and the challenges that creates. The Becks do not just cover romantic love but also parent-child distances as children travel and work in places far from where they grew up. They also touch on how gender roles are changing and what that means.
There is a lot of ground covered in this book but I think many of us would recognize some situation presented. Very well done and interesting take on modern relationships.

Fascinating Study

"Distant Love" by Ulrich Beck and Elisabeth Beck-Gernsheim is a wonderful study of relationships of people separated by many, many miles. It's a study of cultures with opposing views, practices, opinions or attitudes and what happens when they clash. There's a lot of info here.
Is it a textbook? I don't know if it is or it isn't. I just appreciated the information for my own knowledge and enjoyed reading it. I find sociology one of the subjects I'm quite interested in. Sociology doesn't tell you how to do anything. It tells you what has already been or what currently is and possibly what a sociologist's prediction for possible outcomes may be. If looking for ideas on how to have successful long distance relationships I recommend the self-help book section.
I found this book to be very time worthy with the increased methods of communication we have at hand now. Methods such as Skype and email, to name just two have made it so much easier to keep in touch.
Being someone who did have a long distance relationship as well as currently have friends and family spread throughout the world, I'm very interested in this topic. I enjoy finding out what others are doing and why. Electronic communication has changed the world and how we relate personally with one another.

I'm very familiar with the impact of globalization can affect long distance relationships, families and marriages. Having gone overseas for my schooling in the 1980s, we didn't have the benefit of the internet or inexpensive long distance calling. Letters, expensive packages, prohibitively expensive phone calls all meant limited contact with family and close friends. I read Distant Love to understand the larger picture and to have the sociological take on the phenomena. While the book put greater emphasis on economic migration and the position of women seeking better economic opportunities, I found Distant Love an interesting and enlightening read.
