Understanding Inequalities: Stratification and Difference, by Lucinda Platt

Bringing together the latest empirical evidence with a discussion of sociological debates surrounding inequality, this book explores a broad range of inequalities in people's lives. As well as treating the core sociological topics of class, ethnicity and gender, it examines how inequalities are experienced across a variety of settings, including education, health, geography and housing, income and wealth, and how they cumulate across the life course. Richly illustrated with graphs and figures showing the extent of inequalities and the differences between social groups, the book demonstrates how people's lives are structured by inequalities across multiple dimensions of their lives.

Throughout, the text pays attention to how we know what we know about inequality: what is measured and how, what is left out of the picture, and what implications this has for our understanding of specific inequalities. Importantly, the book also highlights the intersections between different sources or forms of inequality, and the ways that bringing an intersectional lens to bear on topics can highlight and challenge the assumptions about how they operate.

Designed for second-year undergraduates and above, this book provides an engaging overview of social stratification and challenges readers to think about how inequalities are embedded across society.

The Pragmatic Turn, by Richard J. Bernstein

In this major new work, Richard J. Bernstein argues that many of the most important themes in philosophy during the past one hundred and fifty years are variations and developments of ideas that were prominent in the classical American pragmatists: Charles S. Peirce, William James, John Dewey and George H Mead. Pragmatism begins with a thoroughgoing critique of the Cartesianism that dominated so much of modern philosophy. The pragmatic thinkers reject a sharp dichotomy between subject and object, mind-body dualism, the quest for certainty and the spectator theory of knowledge. They seek to bring about a sea change in philosophy that highlights the social character of human experience and normative social practices, the self-correcting nature of all inquiry, and the continuity of theory and practice. And they-especially James, Dewey, and Mead-emphasize the democratic ethical-political consequences of a pragmatic orientation.

Many of the themes developed by the pragmatic thinkers were also central to the work of major twentieth century philosophers like Wittgenstein and Heidegger, but the so-called analytic-continental split obscures this underlying continuity. Bernstein develops an alternative reading of contemporary philosophy that brings out the persistence and continuity of pragmatic themes. He critically examines the work of leading contemporary philosophers who have been deeply influenced by pragmatism, including Hilary Putnam, Jürgen Habermas, Richard Rorty, and Robert Brandom, and he explains why the discussion of pragmatism is so alive, varied and widespread. This lucid, wide-ranging book by one of America's leading philosophers will be compulsory reading for anyone who wants to understand the state of philosophy today.

Review
"Whoever wants to understand how the classical pragmatism of Dewey, James and Peirce could survive a long period of harsh criticism by analytical philosophy and come to vitality again at the end of the 20th century, should read this book. It is by far the most perceptive account of the persistence of pragmatist motives and themes in contemporary philosophy. Bernstein succeeds with eloquence, perspicacity and lucidity to show us why an idea as old as one hundred years is of highest importance for our philosophical self-understanding today."
Axel Honneth, University of Frankfurt

"Richard Bernstein has written what is by far the best and most sophisticated account of recent and present-day pragmatist thought, including Rorty's and Brandom's. It is written with Bernstein's characteristic clarity, and it is the fruit of immense scholarship and deep thinking. It is a book that every serious student of these thinkers needs to read and think about."
Hilary Putnam, Harvard University

Perhaps the Best of Its Kind
By Larry J. Crockett
There are few books of such marvelous clarity as Bernstein's new book on pragmatism. But it is not simply a book on pragmatism, it provides the reader with a gentle, generous review of a lifetime of reflecting on major issues and major thinkers in philosophy. He doesn't write to impress but to enlighten and excite interest in general issues of philosophy and pragmatism as the singular American contribution to philosophy more specifically. Personal reflections are interwoven in a very appealing manner, without sacrificing a high level of philosophic accomplishment. Hilary Putnam has heaped high praise on this book. As I make my way through it for a second time, I marvel at how much I am learning. Thank you, Prof. Bernstein, for this capstone to your distinguished career.

A great appraisal of the history and current state of Pragmatism.
By Amazon Customer
Professor Bernstein begins this book by stating, ""Isms" in philosophy are notorious, and this is certainly true of "pragmatism." It is fashionable in philosophy to speak about "isms": "materialism," idealism," "existentialism," "realism," "nominalism," "naturalism," etc. The advantage of this type of talk is that it enables us to label philosophical positions, orientations, and theses that presumably share distinctive characteristics. But there are also dangers, because we may be seduced into thinking that there is an essential hard core to a particular "ism." What is worse, we often use these expressions carelessly, frequently assuming that our hearers and readers have a perfectly clear idea of what we mean. Yet when we closely examine the positions advocated by representatives of these "isms," we discover enormous differences - including conflicting and even contradictory claims. Even the anti-essentialist idiom of "family resemblances" has become a cliché. Not only are differences in a family as striking as any resemblances, but in an actual family, we can typically appeal to common biological factors to identify a family. There is nothing comparable to this in philosophy. So it might seem advisable to drop all talk of "isms" in order to avoid confusion, ambiguity, and vagueness. Yet this would also impoverish our ability to understand what we take to be positions and thinkers who, despite significant differences, do share important overlapping features. These general observations are relevant to pragmatism."

As a long-standing supporter and follower of Pragmatism, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and everything Professor Bernstein had to say about it. I especially enjoyed this quote: "The expression "pragmatism" is like an accordion; it is sometimes stretched to include a wide diversity of positions and thinkers (not just philosophers) and sometimes restricted to specific doctrines of the original American pragmatists. The truth is that ever since the origins of American pragmatism - and right up to the present - critics and champions of pragmatism have been arguing about what constitutes pragmatism and who is and is not a pragmatist. Rather than attempting to define pragmatism anew, I hope to show through my discussion of specific themes what I take to be characteristic of the best of the pragmatic tradition." Indeed, I believe Professor Bernstein accomplished this mission handedly. Here is a list of the nine chapters of the book: Chapter 1 - Charles S. Peirce's Critique of Cartesianism; Chapter 2 - The Ethical Consequences of William James's Pragmatic Pluralism; Chapter 3 - John Dewey's Vision of Radical Democracy; Chapter 4 - Hegel and Pragmatism; Chapter 5 - Pragmatism, Objectivity, and Truth; Chapter 6 - Experience after the Linguistic Turn; Chapter 7 - Hilary Putnam: The Entaglement of Fact and Value; Chapter 8 - Jurgen Habermas's Kantian Pragmatism; and Chapter 9 - Richard Rorty's Deep Humanism. In conclusion, this book might be a little too technical for a wider audience, but I don't think it's beyond the reach of a motivated reader. Professor Bernstein has done a great deed to the philosophical community by writing this book and we are all the better for it.

[Here are a handful of books that concern Pragmatism for the interested reader: The Rorty Reader (Blackwell Readers), Between Saying and Doing: Towards an Analytic Pragmatism, Pragmatism: An Open Question, Pragmatism: A Reader, and Pragmatism's Advantage: American and European Philosophy at the End of the Twentieth Century]

Insights into how philosophy works through the pragmatist lens
By Todd I. Stark
This is a book about specific ideas of the American pragmatist philosophers and how they appear in or influence other philosophy in non-obvious ways. In part it offers a new way of looking at the "linguistic turn" in philosophy in terms of pragmatist themes that downplay the traditional analytic/Continental distinction among philosophers. So if you're not interested in detailed discussions of how different ideas interact in the thinking of different philosophers, this book will likely bore the hell out of you. This is not easy reading and it doesn't suggest easy answers to practical problems. This book is an exploration of particular ideas in philosophy and how they relate.

Disclaimer aside, if you are seriously interested in philosophy and how its ideas interact and evolve, then this book is a unique one covering an important topic, the role of pragmatist ideas in the thinking of a wide range of philosophers not at all associated with pragmatism typically.

By example, I think this book reveals something profound about philosophy, the way it makes ideas explicit but doesn't neccessary invent them from scratch. We see how Wittgenstein and Heidegger made use of themes found in pragmatism as well as Habermas and Rorty, and also how they made different use of those themes than the classical pragmatists.

Bernstein illuminates the way classical pragmatists thought about knowledge and thinking and human life, most distincively reflected in the early work of C.S. Peirce, and uses that to interpret American pragmatism in a novel way regarding its influences and appearances in other places.

Formemost among the pragmatist themes are the folly of privileged knowledge and the primacy of practice over language in philosophical thinking. Pragmatism identifies what may be the most elegant way to express the idea that explanation serves action and that language and ideas provide tools for purposeful thought that serves action.

More than most philosophers, because of their historical motivation to critique ideological systems that claimed special privilege, the pragmatists seemed to appreciate the role of intrinsic bias in human thinking and how it survives our attempts at logical rigor. They came to the conclusion that experience is compulsive but not authoritative as a source of knowledge.

So we see pragmatist thought navigating through the complexities of rationalism, reinforcing the goal-directed nature of instrumental reasoning yet also questioning the primacy of logic as a tool for clear thinking because we start from intuitions, and our intuitions differ from person to person.

These kind of themes are used to see various other philosophers in a new way. Chapters explore in detail the pragmatism of Hegel, the contributions of Putnam regarding entanglement of fact and value, Habermas as "Kantian Pragmatism," and a somewhat ambivalent account of Rorty as "Deep Humanism."

I think contemporary philosophy, as a discipline distinct from science, yields much of its value in rendering our background of ideas more explicit and giving names and terms for ideas, rather than just as a source of new ideas.

In showing by example how the same ideas pop up in different places and are used in different ways this book helps illustrate both the way we use philosophical ideas and the specific value of pragmatist ideas in understanding philosophy.

For more on pragmatism and pragmatists in particular, I reccommend Susan Haack's collection of primary source material in Pragmatism, Old And New: Selected Writings (Haack argues from a different perspective that Rorty is not a pragmatist in the same sense as Peirce, so this makes a good complement).

Ecovillages: Lessons for Sustainable Community, by Karen T. Litfin

In a world of dwindling natural resources and mounting environmental crisis, who is devising ways of living that will work for the long haul? And how can we, as individuals, make a difference? To answer these fundamental questions, Professor Karen Litfin embarked upon a journey to many of the world’s ecovillagesÑintentional communities at the cutting-edge of sustainable living. From rural to urban, high tech to low tech, spiritual to secular, she discovered an under-the-radar global movement making positive and radical changes from the ground up.

In this inspiring and insightful book, Karen Litfin shares her unique experience of these experiments in sustainable living through four broad windows - ecology, economics, community, and consciousness - or E2C2. Whether we live in an ecovillage or a city, she contends, we must incorporate these four key elements if we wish to harmonize our lives with our home planet.

Not only is another world possible, it is already being born in small pockets the world over. These micro-societies, however, are small and time is short. Fortunately - as Litfin persuasively argues - their successes can be applied to existing social structures, from the local to the global scale, providing sustainable ways of living for generations to come.

Review
"In lively, honest and reflective prose, Litfin offers deep insight into how this research project has been part of her own mission of living more sustainably. While Litfin provides us with a range of practical information about the principles of ecovillage organising ? including countless nuggets of inspiration that will be useful to anyone, not just those intending to live in communities ? she also puts forward a theoretical framework for analysing these emerging ways of sustainable living."
Times Higher Education

"If you can't take a year off to visit ecovillages around the world, this marvel of a book is the next best thing. It?s actually even better for the carbon it saves, the questions it asks, and the wisdom it shares. Karen Litfin?s journey enlivens our understanding of the Great Turning. I am eager to share it with all my students and fellow teachers."
Joanna Macy, author of Active Hope: How to Face the Mess We?re in Without Going Crazy

"This book offers a unique opportunity to compare several different forms of sustainable communities around the world, giving us a glimpse of the best practices and challenges of the global ecovillage movement."
Environment Magazine

"In these times of political gridlock and myopia, Karen Litfin's tremendously engaging and informative exploration of eco-villages around the world points the way to a viable and attractive future very different from the bleak place to which we are now headed. You will enjoy this book!"
James Gustave Speth, author of America the Possible: Manifesto for New Economy

"Ecovillages offers that rarest of gifts: wisdom. It asks not simply how to address the build-up of carbon, dwindling of species, and toxification of our world, but how we can live together joyously on a single earth. Among the book's many beauties is that it is written from the wellspring of experience and expressed through Litfin?s hands, voice, and soul."
Paul Wapner, American University

"The world is in for a major transition, a huge downshift, ready or not. For those inclined to roll up their sleeves and get ready (as opposed to lament the trends and decry business as usual), ecovillages can offer insight and hope. As Litfin shows in this compelling book, they exemplify an 'affirmative politics,' a politics at once ecological, economic, community-oriented and spiritual. Ecovillages aren?t for everyone, but in these uncertain times, their lessons may be."
Thomas Princen, University of Michigan

"Karen Litfin is a perceptive, thoughtful, and gifted observer of the human predicament. In writing Ecovillages, Litfin combines her intellectual prowess with her sensitivity and compassion to tell a hugely important and inspiring story."
Chris Uhl, Professor of Biology at Penn State and author of Developing Ecological Consciousness

"Karen Litfin has not only written a book of great importance to all of us at this pivotal moment in history, she has also done it in a way that is lively, moving, informative and compelling. This first-rate book deserves to reach the widest possible audience; we must pay attention to it if we are going to thrive as a species on this fragile planet."
Nina Wise, author of A Big New Free Happy Unusual Life

"Ecovillages have for many years acted as micro-laboratories for building a low carbon, post-growth society. But what can we learn from them? How much of ecovillage life is scaleable and replicable? Karen Litfin set out to find out, and her learnings and insights are invaluable. We owe her road trip and her research a great deal, there is much wisdom and treasure here!"
Rob Hopkins, author of The Transition Handbook: From Oil Dependency to Local Resilience

"An inspiring and instructive journey to the wide range of communities pioneering a sustainable global future."
Jakob von Uexk?ll, founder of the Right Livelihood Award and former member of the European Parliament

"Nature teaches us that nothing disappears when it dies, it merely becomes something new. Karen Litfin's lucid and heartfelt book reveals the new life emerging in the cracks of failing systems. Through her eyes, we meet people everywhere who are building high-joy, low-impact communities. Litfin is the perfect guide: intellectually rigorous, spiritually awake and deeply caring. If you want to create a richer, gentler life for yourself and your community, read this book!"
Vicki Robin, bestselling author of Your Money or Your Life and Blessing the Hands that Feed Us

Karen Litfin understands that today we need inspiration as much as information, to forge the vibrant communities that will carry us into an enduring future. The success stories she brings to life are just what we need to revivify our existing communities on a planet perched at the precipice.
Kurt Hoelting, author of The Circumference of Home: One Man's Yearlong Quest for a Radically Local Life

"One of the most powerful questions asked of us by our world crisis is, 'How can we live together in ways that allow us to "be the change" together?' Karen Litfin's book gives us answers. These ecovillage experiments ? idealistic, imperfect, courageous, creative and honestly described - will help us transform our consciousness and find our way forward."

The Right Things to think and ask about.....
By bunnyrabbit4
When I first got this book I had a hard time making myself start the read. It is mostly writing with a few black and white pictures and when it mentioned Damanhur and Findhorn I began to assume that it was really a collection of well advertised commercial communities and didn't have much to offer someone wanting to start one. I'm glad I was wrong!

She gives the location of the book's website where you can find lots of great pictures of each community and the information she discusses is not by any stretch of the imagination, a commercial. While she is an academic with credentials in the field of sustainability, the writing is aimed at the causal reader. It is very down to earth and deals with the real issues that affect starting an alternative community. She spent two week at each of these places and writes from the perspective of someone who learns not only about their culture, but about the very human problems that crop up when people attempt to live with more than 10 or 20 of your closest friends.

The problems are similar in some ways. People who choose to live an alternative lifestyle have to be strong enough in their beliefs to walk away from the flock. That very strength can make them uncompromising. One community, "Earthhaven" had 50 members when a major problem arose. The state of South Caroline closed its borders to over night guests because it was using water from a spring which it deemed to be unsanitary. Arguments arose from purists in the group who felt that drilling a water well was desecrating the Earth. Since they derived operating funds from their educational outreach this quickly led to financial issues. As you might imagine, people being passionate about beliefs can cause many issues. Can a Vegan eat next to someone who has free range chicken on their plate? Not always. As one director put it, they don't HAVE to accept compromise at this point. In a real emergency food and water situation people would probably be more accepting of each other. As things stand, people are still free to squabble, disagree and leave.

The communities themselves vary greatly as well. Italy's Damanhur, a spiritual community led by its charismatic leader Falco, appears to be heavily funded and features smartphones for everyone and a molecular biology lab to test GMO food. While it does research into sustainable foods, I was glad to see she didn't fall in love with Damanhur. I was initially wowed by its underground temples until an Italian friend shared some not so spiritual information about Falco's financial dealings.

Other communities, like Colufifa in Senegal, are on the other end of the spectrum, existing with very little in the way of funds. Colufifa represents an alliance of 350 West African villages dedicated to organic farming, adult literacy and microfinancing. Each of the fourteen villages she visits has its problems and perks, with most of the problems involving either groups of people within the village transitioning to different mindsets or collisions with existing laws and culture. It also seems that unless they want to make lots of money or take on a social problem...there isn't a lot of support for these groups in our corporate world. Except for the well-established and funded like Damanhur, Findhorn and Auroville in India, most are finding their way a day at a time. Her discussions of the economies of the smaller ecovillages are well worth your reading time if you have any interest in creating an alternative community.

Litfin's BIG blindspot.
By Ntropee
I appreciated this effort to examine the eco-village phenomenon. To her credit, Litfin took eco-villages seriously and tried to draw lessons from them to help answer the larger question: how do we scale these micro-efforts up to make them useful for everyone else? But the answers she provided were disappointing and extremely naive, especially for a political scientist. The bedrock issues of political science revolve around POWER; yet you'd never know that from her book. Yet power is exactly what is needed. To prevent escalating planetary ecocide, the drive for profit must be removed from its place of prominence over the global economy. To accomplish this, people will need the political power to change the economic rules of the game. Why? Because they will face very formidable foes dead-set against changing these rules.

But does Litfin say anything about power, profit, or how to build such a political movement? NO. Like most academics, she scrupulously avoids the "c" word (capitalism) and reduces the economy to a giant growth machine wreaking havoc with the planet. But capitalism's prime directive is profit, not growth. If growth "runs out of gas" and turns to contraction and collapse, capitalism won't evaporate. Corporate elites will extract profits from hoarding, corruption, crisis, and conflict. In a growth-less economy, the profit motive can have a devastating catabolic impact on society. (The word "catabolism" comes from the Greek and is used in biology to refer to the condition whereby a living thing feeds on itself.) Catabolic capitalism will lurch from crisis to crisis, devouring the society it previously created. Unless we free ourselves from its grip, catabolic collapse will become our future--not sustainable Green societies.

Yet, like most academics, Litfin simply believes that educating people is all that's required. Her blind spot around the issue of power hides the full potential of the eco-villages (and Transition Towns) she discusses. These efforts to build sustainable communities free from addiction to consumerism and fossil fuels can become valuable "home fronts" in the emerging war of resistance to save ourselves and our planet from a profit-driven, petro-powered, global economy. We need these home fronts to generate useful alternatives to degenerating industrial capitalism. But we also need them to help germinate and fertilize powerful grassroots movements with the courage and popular support to resist militarism, social injustice, and ecocide and to eventually break the death grip of corporate power over the planet and our lives. Without political power to change the rules of the game, we will always be swimming upstream. But with it, we will be able to make the decisions necessary to govern all the life support systems that sustain our communities and our countries. What Karen Litfin misses is the undeniable fact the people must fight for the POWER to create new economic systems that prioritize people and the planet--not profit.

Sustainability Isn't Just About Saving the Earth...
By T. L. Cooper
I was really excited about reading and reviewing Ecovillages: Lessons for Sustainable Community by Karen T. Liftin before I even opened the book, but I don't believe I allowed my excitement for the topic to interfere with my objectivity. Ecovillages addresses several topics I find relevant to the day and to our future. Liftin took an entire year to spend time at ecovillages around the world. She explores what each of these ecovillages are doing to create a better Earth and a more sustainable lifestyle. There is a thread of living simply throughout the book that supports much of my own point of view. She addresses what she refers to as E2C2, shorthand for ecology, economy, community, and consciousness as the components that make up any society. She discusses in detail how each of the ecovillages she visited address each of the components of E2C2. While we may have these images of ecovillages of hippie communes, Litfin points out various ways in which this stereotype is far from the truth. I like that she ends the book by discussing how the ideas these various ecovillages employ can be scaled up to be introduced into communities already in existence. She addresses the reality that we can't all move into ecovillages and that it might not even be prudent to do so. Liftin makes her points well in an easy to read fashion that makes her message and the message of the ecovillages she visited very clear. Ecovillages is a discussion starter. Many times I stopped reading just to discuss points with my husband and to think through not only what she wrote in the book but the implications on my own life and the lives of those I know. Liftin writes with passion and clarity in every portion of the book. Her ideas and discoveries are presented well even when her topic leaves the reader with questions. Liftin provides a thought provoking analysis of her experience within the ecovillages. Ecovillages isn't just about sustaining the Earth but about sustaining a sense of togetherness and community through less consumption and more interaction.

The Terror of God: Attar, Job and the Metaphysical Revolt, by Navid Kermani

How can suffering and injustice be reconciled with the idea that God is good, that he loves humans and is merciful to them? Job's question runs through the history of the three monotheistic religions. Time and again, philosophers, theologians, poets, prophets and laypersons have questioned their image of God in the light of a reality full of hardship. Some see suffering as proof of God's existence, others as a demonstration that there can be no God, while others still respond by rebelling against Him.

In this remarkable book Navid Kermani - a distinguished Islamic scholar of Iranian origin - sees this revolt against God as the central motif of one of the great but neglected works of literature: The Book of Suffering by the thirteenth-century Persian poet Faridoddin Attar. Through the prism of Attar's text Kermani tells the story of a religious faith that knows God but is angry with Him: a counter-theology that runs through many religions and connects Judaism, Islam and modernity.

With astonishing range and stylistic brilliance Kermani brings Attar to life as one of us, enabling the great Persian poet to speak directly to us today despite the time that separates us.

Revealing cross-cultural exercise on theodicy
By Hans-Peter Muller
In Fariduddin Attar’s (d. 1221) Musibatname, the tragedy of Satan’s outsized love for God who won’t submit to anybody else than Him (he is regarded by many Sufis as the only true monotheist), may lead to deep compassion in the reader for the fallen angel, irrespective of Satan’s clear misconception. Adam might have been created from mud. But he received the Almighty’s breath of life.

Attar’s work as well as new aspects of Job’s fate have come to my attention a couple of years ago when reading German/Iranian orientalist Navid Kermani’s book about Attar, Job and the metaphysical revolt (Der Schrecken Gottes, C. H. Beck, Munich 2005). Attar, who was most probably killed in the Mongolian Storm of the 13th century in the city of Nishapur in Khorasan, has something in mind which will be described as theodicy in 1710 by German philosopher Gottfried Leibniz, the problem of Evil. Kermani’s brilliant work assembles much of the medieval, enlightenment and contemporary literature on the topic without providing the reader with a final answer (except strengthening views of an agnostic). One impression I got is that in what the West in a misconception calls Middle Ages (in fact, darkness was prevalent but not in the Islamic World which was bright in these long centuries), Jews, Zoroastrians, Christians and Muslims were living in peace in, say, what is now Eastern Iran, knowing each other’s Holy Books, and getting their inspirations for spiritual journeys from both the Qur’an and the Bible.

The knowledge of our common spiritual origins may really matter when it comes to mutual respect and understanding. When comparing the sober verses about Job in the Holy Qur’an and colorful legends most Muslims are able to tell about the fate of this just, whole-hearted and upright man which are nowhere narrated in the Qur’an, we have to assume that the common traditions are still alive.

No Muslim will, of course, believe that the Almighty was betting with Satan on poor Job. There are only four suwar briefly naming Ayyub, Q4:163 and Q6:84 listing him among the other prophets; and Q21:83f and Q38:41ff where his suffering and patience is mentioned. I was long wondering, why. I had my respective revelation when reading Kermani’s book. All stories differ when told by different protagonists. Each of us has a different viewpoint, and conclusions may be to the contrary. Muslims believe that the Qur’an is God’s uncreated Word. But the Bible has been written by many authors, edited, compiled, over many centuries, by humans. God’s words may be reported, but it is not God who is speaking.

In the Book of Job, one protagonist, wretched Job, tells his version of the events. In the Qur’an, it is God Himself, who won’t admit that He was betting with the devil (actually, he did it twice!) of His servant. He would not report on His disturbing speech out of the tempest.

Regardless any theories about when and how the Holy Qur’an has been revealed or written, one has to realize the consistency when compiling God’s word, and only God’s word. It is very clear throughout that it is not Muhammad who is ever speaking.

It is too detailed and full of personal opinion. Also the facts of life of Attar is looked upon in the light of Western thinkers and philosophers.

Literary & Linguistic Computing

"Jussi Parikka offers a lucid, concise, and highly readable account of a new and exciting field - media archaeology. He demonstrates that contemporary media forms are rooted to the past by multiple threads - untangling them helps us understand the media frenzy that currently surrounds us."
Erkki Huhtamo, University of California Los Angeles

Matthew Fuller, Goldsmiths

"Parrika's adroit combination of depth and brevity takes readers rapidly on wide ranging journeys into exploring contemporary media."

Media, Culture & Society

"The most comprehensive coverage to date of this fascinating area of study. Parikka's book offers an excellent overview of connections between the material and social aspects of media technology. He provides a thorough review of the diverse and sometimes contrasting theoretical foundations and provides a host of concrete examples of media-archaeological practice that serve to bridge the gap between heady theoretical trajectories and the concerns of practicing artists, users and other readers who take their technology seriously."

Media Archaeology -- An Exciting New Field for Media Workers
By Peter Maiden
Media archaeology is a new field of inquiry, whose researchers have been active just since the 1990s. Jussi Parikka’s “What is Media Archaeology?” (Polity Press, 2012), a relatively short (205 pages) but important book, maps out what the field has done and is doing to make itself known. Its relevance to media workers is in it’s yearning to comprehend media production in its entirety: as machinery, thought, practice, a means of imagination and more.

Archaeology is the study of objects from past times. What is a measure of time becomes an issue in the “What is Media Archaeology?” The sweep of historical time—such as can be seen in the pre-industrial and the capitalist eras—is mentioned by Parikka as time in large measure. Parikka is also interested in time in small measure, like the tiny bits of time it takes for electrical signals to operate within the chips that make possible the production of digital media in today’s world.

On what you might call the “macro” level, the study of our historical era is often a critique of capitalism. Parikka writes:

"The recent years of cultural theory have been talking of ‘cognitive capitalism’ and affective labor as new regimes of capitalism in which our ways of thinking, communicating and socializing have become key motors for value creation, and hence under new forms of control."

On the other hand, what you could call the “micro” level, Parikka says, miniature electronic media processes we work with escape our sense perception and almost our ability to measure. Because we cannot sense them, in a way they leave the human sphere.

Every work of media studies is tied in some way to the media technology of the time in which it was written (although some transcend more than others). Concerns have sometimes been similar for our predecessors and us. Today, for example, cloud storage is questioned regarding its safety from interference. From a British magazine from 1881 Parikka quotes a passage about the telegraph lines of early capitalism, citing similar issues: “The telegraph is not always, or to everybody, the unmitigated boon and blessing enthusiastic admirers have represented it to be. … There is always more or less uncertainty attaching to a telegram, both in regard to the length of time it may be on its journey, and in regard to the way in which the wording may be reproduced.”

More often than they stay the same, ideological and scientific concerns change through time, and they do so in a kind of parallel to the evolution of machinery. This is brought into striking relief in Parikka’s discussion of the complaints of the mad. Obviously no stricken person could have reported that there was a radio broadcasting in his or her brain before the invention of radio, with its new invisible wireless transmissions. I think Parikka sees the mad as canaries in the coal mine, whose health reflected the existence or lack of poison gas in the mine (although without the connotation of media technology being poisonous). He writes:

"New media have constantly been imagined as a media or mind control. The delusional side is only the paranoid schizophrenic hyperbole of what happens with technical media that do not translate easily into everyday language and understanding. … Remove the imaginary, remove the supposedly fantastic otherworldly, and see what is revealed: a word of social relations, networks of communication, and new worlds of media technologies where are non-human in the deep scientific sense of reaching out to the non-phenomenological worlds of electricity, electromagnetic fields and, a bit later for example, quantum mechanics."

It is a bit mind-bending for even normal people that there is now media comprised, for example, of electronic flows in chips that are directed by software, which are in fact very hard for anyone besides the most highly trained experts, versed in advanced computational mathematics, to comprehend, and upon which we utterly depend for our means of communication. Parikka argues processes should be broken down into more common understanding for media workers, and perhaps it is just a matter of time until they will be.

There is an element of practice to media archaeology as well as its research aspect. Parikka reports that this is mostly in the area of avant-garde art. My feeling is that such a focus might expand upon but also could limit the horizons of the field, which can be of a more profound utility if its discoveries are made more generally accessible to all kinds of media workers, be they broadcasters, photographers, bloggers or even computer programmers.

The above review of course reports on only a portion of what “What is Media Archaeology?” has to offer. The book, while heavy on jargon, is rich in references to the work of intellectuals in many areas of study who have contributed to the overall effort to give their emerging field a greater presence. It is a starting place, as it was intended to be, and it is highly recommended.

Very readable guide to a new branch of contemporary media studies
By Dr. Laurence Raw
WHAT IS MEDIA ARCHAEOLOGY looks at a new branch of media studies, drawing on the work of Michel Foucault and Friedrich Kittler. It offers new ways to think about the past and its relationship to the present, as well as focusing attention on how concepts such as "noise," or "programming" are culturally as well as historically constructed. Jussi Parikka offers some interesting pointers for future research - for example, looking into the ways in which machines work across history and across cultures - that may help to unite humanities and scientific experts in new forms of interdisciplinary partnership. Each chapter ends with a helpful summary of the main arguments to aid reader comprehension. All in all, a lucid and theoretically stimulating read.

The tragic outcome of buzzwords
By sh1234
This is pretty terrible. If you want a substantive (and readable) background in what is now being called "media archaeology," try Anne Friedberg, Siegfried Zielinski, or Kittler.

The Sacrament of Language, by Giorgio Agamben

Oaths play an essential part in the political and religious history of the West as a 'sacrament of power'. Yet despite numerous studies by linguists, anthropologists and historians of law and of religion, there exists no complete analysis of the oath which seeks to explain the strategic function that this phenomenon has performed at the intersection of law, religion and politics.

The oath seems to define man himself as a political animal, but what is an oath and from where does it originate? Taking this question as its point of departure, Giorgio Agamben's book develops a pathbreaking 'archaeology' of the oath. Via a firsthand survey of Greek and Roman sources which shed light on the nexus of the oath with archaic legislation, acts of condemnation and the names of gods and blasphemy, Agamben recasts the birth of the oath as a decisive event of anthropogenesis, the process by which mankind became humanity. If the oath has historically constituted itself as a 'sacrament of power', it has functioned at one and the same time as a 'sacrament of language' - a sacrament in which man, discovering that he can speak, chooses to bind himself to his language and to use it to put life and destiny at stake.

From the Back Cover
Oaths play an essential part in the political and religious history of the West as a 'sacrament of power'. Yet despite numerous studies by linguists, anthropologists and historians of law and of religion, there exists no complete analysis of the oath which seeks to explain the strategic function that this phenomenon has performed at the intersection of law, religion and politics.

The oath seems to define man himself as a political animal, but what is an oath and from where does it originate? Taking this question as its point of departure, Giorgio Agamben's book develops a pathbreaking 'archaeology' of the oath. Via a firsthand survey of Greek and Roman sources which shed light on the nexus of the oath with archaic legislation and acts of condemnation, Agamben recasts the birth of the oath as a decisive event of anthropogenesis, the process by which mankind became humanity. If the oath has historically constituted itself as a 'sacrament of power', it has functioned at one and the same time as a 'sacrament of language' - a sacrament in which man, discovering that he can speak, chooses to bind himself to his language and to use it to put life and destiny at stake.

About the Author
Giorgio Agamben is Professor of Aesthetics at the University of Venice. His many publications include "Homo Sacer: Sovereign Power and Bare Life, Remnants of Auschwitz: The Witness and the Archive" (Zone Books), "The Coming Community", and "State of Exception".

Alfred Hitchcock's America, by Murray Pomerance

With a sharp eye for social detail and the pressures of class inequality, Alfred Hitchcock brought to the American scene a perspicacity and analytical shrewdness unparalleled in American cinema.

Murray Pomerance works from a basis in cultural analysis and a detailed knowledge of Alfred Hitchcock's films and production techniques to explore how America of the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s is revealed and critically commented upon in Hitchcock's work. Alfred Hitchcock's America is full of stunning details that bring new light to Hitchcock's method and works. The American "spirit of place," is seen here in light of the titanic American personality, American values in a consumer age, social class and American social form, and the characteristic American marriage. The book’s analysis ranges across a wide array of films from Rebecca to Family Plot, and examines in depth the location sequences, characterological types, and complex social expectations that riddled American society while Hitchcock thrived there.

Curiously Unsatisfying
By J. Hundley
While I am not a Hitchcock scholar by any means, I have read a handful of books about him and his work, most of which I found more satisfying than this. Not without its insights and merits, I just didn't find this particularly, um, satisfying. Here are my thoughts on it:

I realize that this is a scholarly series, and Pomerance doesn't stint on the scholarship, the writing here is often needlessly byzantine. Not only are there too many instances of severely twisted syntax, some of the dependent clauses become like poorly marked subway maps. I had to go back and reread a sentence far too often to remember what it started to be about. The same can be applied to some of the subsections of the chapters. The author routinely whiplashes from one topic or film to another with little or no connective tissue. I frowned a lot reading this - not because I necessarily disagreed, but because I got lost in the transition, or lack thereof.

Unlike the Spike Lee volume in this series, which failed to support (or often even make) an argument for a specific vision of America in Lee's work, Pomerance has vision a-plenty. But too often it feels like he is creating a vision of, specifically, 1950s and 1960s America, then cherry-picking from Hitch's movies to bolster his own thesis rather than examining Hitchcock's films and then seeing what they do say. As a result, it feel like the tail is often wagging the dog. It may not be the case for him, but it feels like whole films and significant parts of other films are ignored because they don't support the author's thesis.

It is also not really clear exactly what that thesis is, if there indeed is one. The book simply, um, ends. There is no summary, no tying together. The introduction, which features the weakest writing in the book kinda sorta talks about what he wants to say, but not in a way that pulls these parts together as a whole.

On a less significant, but very curious note, Pomerance goes to great length in his discussions of Psycho to avoid revealing the surprise ending, while acknowledging that it is difficult to write about the film without revealing it. The tack is odd to me since a) Psycho is almost certainly Hitchcock's best known film and even people who have never seen it know the twist, perhaps the most famous twist ending in American film history; b) it is hard to imagine that someone who has never seen Psycho would be reading a scholarly volume about it's director's presentations of American culture and society, and; c) he blithely reveals the plot intricacies and twists of virtually every other film he discusses here. Curious.

Lastly, while I tended to enjoy the little bits and pieces of trivia included in the footnotes, they, too, seemed rather jarring in that they appear to be almost random bits and pieces which have no real connection to the text in which they are appended. I know they are footnotes, of course, but the very randomness of when he includes them seem more like a certain amount of showing us only how much trivia the author knows about Hitchcock's films. They are interesting, but kind of pointless. For example, the significance of Edna May Wonacott's height at the time she was in Shadow of a Doubt is kinda sorta interesting, but why not, then, Theresa Wright's height? Or Joseph Cotton's favorite flavor of ice cream?

In all, while there is a good deal interesting here, the issues above keep me from being able to rate it any higher. It will be of some use and interest to Hitchcock scholars and those interested in popular representations of mid-20th Century American culture and society.

Interesting, but questionable premise
By Ekat
I'm a total sucker for anything Hitchcock. I own many of his movies, and just recently read the excellent and very detailed biography, Alfred Hitchcock: A Life in Darkness and Light by Patrick McGilligan. So this book looked like it would be an interesting new perspective on Hitchcock's work during what most consider is his masterpiece era. And it is interesting if you already interested in Hitchcock. However, I had a few issues with the book.

First, after reading the book by McGilligan, I did not need detailed plot summaries or production factoids about the various films. I understand that for those that did not read McGilligan's book that these notes could be of interest. However, I often glossed over these, particularly when I saw many were citations from that book.

Secondly, there were odd diversions that really had no point to the overall narrative. Did I really need to know that Ridley Scott filmed a movie in the facility that built the Golden Gate Bridge?

Lastly, and most importantly, I question the premise of the book. Many of the examples of how Hitchcock's films show American values, American personality, American way of life, etc.. seem like a stretch. I felt that it was a story of finding facts and points to support a premise versus examine the source material to develop a premise. For example, in the introduction the author goes into detail about Hitchcock's film Lifeboat and it's examination of class structure and how it showed American beliefs seemed odd. I would say a film made in 1944 by Hitchcock depicting social stratification would have more to do with his British upbringing and what was occurring in Europe at the time. Even later, the depictions of Rear Window being a study of New York/American life is a stretch to me. When I watch Rear Window (one of my absolute favorite films) I don't see it as a study of New York/American life. It is a depiction of characters that anyone, anywhere in the world could relate to along with a sense of voyeurism that seems to be a human (not just American) trait.

So with that, why do I still rate this a 3/5? It is partly because it is about Hitchcock, which can always keep my interest. However, it is also in general interesting to read about what in the author's opinion is American and why Hitchcock's films express those traits/values. I may not agree with all the connections, but the discussion is interesting. It does make me question my beliefs about what makes something 'American'.

Mostly written for serious students of film.
By Paul Tognetti
"My intention with this small book is to raise new questions and considerations, challenge viewers to look at Hitchcock's wonderful films yet again, and see in his work an illumination of American form and life that has perhaps not been shown in this way." - page 14

I have always considered him to be the most fascinating public figure of my lifetime. During a half century of filmmaking in his native Great Britain and here in America director Alfred Hitchcock produced some of the most stylish and compelling movies ever made. I have always been a huge fan. That is why I jumped at the chance to pluck a copy of Murray Pomerance's new book "Alfred Hitchcock's America" off the Amazon Vine. Starting with 1939's "Rebecca" this book concentrates on Hitchcock's work here in the U.S. Despite the fact that I lack any formal education in filmmaking I was able to gain some fresh insights into the work of this most remarkable director.

In "Alfred Hitchcock's America" I discovered that Hitchcock never proceeded with a film until he had done intensive research on all of the locations he was going to shoot. He was all about detail. Every single element -- casting, performance, lighting, camera angle, construction of setting and even the music were painstakingly woven together to create just the impression he was looking to make. For example, in preparing for "Rear Window" Hitchcock recorded more than 2 minutes of typical Greenwich Village sound made on the small side streets of the community. Such attention to detail is what gave Hitchcock films their authenticity. Speaking of "Rear Window" I loved the author's characterization of this film as "an intriguingly-detailed portrait of American life, less a full-fledged landscape and more a set of artist's sketches delicately flashed out in detail." A very apt description indeed! Murray Pomerance also offers some perspective of scenes Hitchcock shot at some of this nation's most iconic places including Mount Rushmore, the George Washington Bridge, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Statue of Liberty, the Hoover Dam and the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

Throughout the pages of "Alfred Hitchcock's America" Murray Pomerance offers informed observations about dozens of Hitchcock's American films including some of the more obscure ones. Despite the fact that I am a huge fan I was unfamiliar with quite a few of them including "The Trouble with Harry", "The Wrong Man" and the 1956 remake of "The Man Who Knew Too Much". While I certainly intend to view these films in the not too distant future I had absolutely no context for what the author was talking about. This happened numerous times over the course of the book. In addition, I found that some of the author's observations went right over my head. My lack of formal education about film-making started to become an issue. Having said that, I would be remiss if I failed to mention the marvelous photos that the author culled from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. At the end of the day "Alfred Hitchcock's America" is certainly worth a look-see but in all honesty I would not recommend it for general audiences. I could easily see this book being assigned reading in a college-level Film Appreciation course. The bottom line is that the more you know about film the more likely you will appreciate what Murray Pomerance has to say.

Demobilizing Irregular Forces, by Eric Y. Shibuya

From Afghanistan and Sierra Leone to East Timor, the aftermath of any armed conflict presents a complex set of challenges. Whatever political agreements may have been reached, conflicts are often at risk of reigniting, and the fates of their former participants remain uncertain. Armed groups may not be easily dissuaded from pursuing belligerent activities which they see as both profitable and understandable behaviour. In the face of these difficulties, the process of disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR) attempts to convince combatants to relinquish their weapons and return to civilian life. It is a crucial first step towards lasting peace.

Demobilizing Militias is the first comprehensive introduction to DDR in the contemporary world. Examining regions as varied as Africa, Asia and Central America, it guides readers through the different stages of the DDR process as well as assessing competing perspectives surrounding its implementation. Attentive to the problems faced by practitioners, Eric Shibuya argues against a 'one size fits all' approach, emphasizing the importance of social and psychological contexts in fostering the trust that is necessary for DDR to succeed. Accessible and incisive, it will be an ideal resource for students of politics, security and conflict studies, as well as anyone interested in the dynamics of peacebuilding today.

Review

"An excellent primer to DDR, perhaps even the best available."
LSE Review of Books

"This book examines in fascinating detail a neglected aspect of post-conflict peacebuilding: how to disarm, demobilize, and reintegrate armed groups back into civil society. Eric Shibuya makes a valuable contribution to the literature of unconventional conflict that should be the subject of discussion for years to come."
Tom Mockaitis, DePaul University

"Written in a concise, easy-to-understand manner, and illustrated with several disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR) case studies that highlight the importance of social/cultural contexts and flexibility at the psychological and operational levels, Demobilizing Irregular Forces will be essential reading for students in graduate and undergraduate courses as well as in professional military schools."
Mohan Malik, Asia-Pacific Centre for Security Studies

"In this excellent study Eric Shibuya reminds us that for effective disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration, and for successful peacekeeping in post-conflict situations, the strategies and processes adopted by interveners must be both active and mutually reinforcing. DDR cannot be successfully undertaken without  appreciation of political culture, local fighting traditions, or the identity of militants. Shibuya's findings resonate across the broad Middle East, Central Asia, and Africa, and also in the little-comprehended conflicts of the Pacific Islands; for example, in the Solomon Islands and Bougainville."
David Hegarty, Australian National University

"A well-researched study on the important subject of Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR). Covers considerable ground and ranges across Africa through Asia to the Middle East and Latin America. This will be a valuable introductory book."
Michael Evans, Australian Defence College

"Shibuya provides a fresh look at the DDR process; emphasising psychological and cultural underpinnings of successful DDR programmes."
Central European Journal of International and Security Studies

Shibuya’s main contribution is a clear articulation of how the individual components of DDR fit into the overall process. He is also adept at portraying the various underlying motivations involved, including social and psychological aspects of DDR such as the role of hopes and experiences. "Shibuya’s main contribution is a clear articulation of how the individual components of DDR fit into the overall process. He is also adept at portraying the various underlying motivations involved, including social and psychological aspects of DDR such as the role of hopes and experiences." (Human Rights Review 2015)
