Manuel Castells is University Professor and Wallis Annenberg Chair of Communication Technology and Society at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, as well as Professor Emeritus of Sociology and Planning, University of California, Berkeley. He has published 26 books including the trilogy "The Information Age: Economy, Society, and Culture", translated in 22 languages, and "Communication Power". Modern Technology as a determining factor in updating Democratic systems

This is another great contribution from Prof. Castells to understanding our changing social and political world. The content is most pertinent in a moment when, clearly, concepts such as right and left, political systems and their major actors, are utterly under-rated. Their steps are often against the majority interests and create critical conflicts. Citizens realize the mighty power of Internet, cells..... as tools to mobilize political wills, beyond classic party infrastructures, more and more inadequate. No doubt, beyond traditional participatory ways, Democratic systems will have to take into account the increasing social networks and new technologies as means to asses change in a new era. In short, the rules of the political game are, clearly, changing and nothing will be like before. Excellent, timely reading.

I bought this book to use as a source for my master's thesis. I want specific things out of it, not to read the entire thing. Unfortunately, there is no index. What kind of book like this doesn't have an index?! I have dozens of other books that I have to go through as well as countless articles. In the early 1520s, Magellan set sail for Asia by the Western route, Cortes seized Mexico and some Portuguese based in Malacca dreamed of colonizing China. The Aztec Eagle was destroyed but the Chinese Dragon held strong and repelled the invaders - after first seizing their cannon. For the first time, people from three continents encountered one other, confronted one other and their lives became entangled. These events were of great interest to contemporaries and many people at the time grasped the magnitude of what was going on around them. The Iberians succeeded in America and failed in China. The New World became inseparable from the Europeans who were to conquer it, while the Celestial Empire became, for a long time to come, an unattainable goal.

Gruzinski explores this encounter between civilizations that were different from one another but that already fascinated contemporaries, and he shows that our world today bears the mark of this distant age. For it was in the sixteenth century that human history began to be played out on a global stage. It was then that connections between different parts of the world began to accelerate, not only between Europe and the Americas but also between Europe and China. This is what is revealed by a global history of the sixteenth century, conceived as another way of reading the Renaissance, less Eurocentric and more in tune with our age.

This is a significant contribution to understanding how racism and white supremacy developed in western societies and how it structures our thinking and relationships. I learned a great deal even though I'm not well versed in philosophy.

Limited perspective. I only read the first chapter and part of the second chapter. The content seems amazing, but I wanted something more straight to the point; I found Taylor's writing style a bit difficult to remain engaged.

Short and complete but poorly written and hard to read.

This is my first time leaving a review for a book so don't expect any fancy analysis -- just my opinion. I thought this was poorly written and difficult to read. It was filled with long and over complicated sentences that made reading slow and tedious. The writing style reminded me of someone who was just trying to make a short text extra long to fill space. Here are some sentences from the first few pages of the first chapter:

"Upon the invention of television, a first force restricting the textual analysis of television from developing was the established dominance of social science methods for studying mass media such as radio and print."

"Meanwhile, the humanities traditions of literary and rhetorical criticism that were well established at this time largely disregarded television at first as an inferior artistic form of the masses, not relevant to be considered as art or likely to hold deeper meaning."

"Although this would eventually change, and although many of the critical tools most commonly used in textual analysis of television originate from literary and film studies, the acceptance of television as a legitimate artistic form alongside literature and film required difficult -- and likely incomplete -- negotiation."

I found myself constantly having to read slowly and/or re-read sentences just to understand what was being said. Hopefully someone with better analysis skills can offer a more qualified description of the books quality. As for me, I'll let the quotes above serve as an example of what I believe is representative of the texts quality so judge for yourself.
