About the Author
Paul Ricoeur (1913-2005) is widely recognized as one of the most distinguished philosophers of the twentieth century. He taught for many years at the University of Chicago Divinity School. His many works include Freud and Philosophy, Time and Narrative and Oneself as Another.

Ricoeur at Some of His Most Accessible

This is a fine, clear collection of Ricoeur at some of his most understandable work I've ever read. I think this is actually the perfect gateway drug for those interested in psychology/psychoanalysis who have yet to make their foray into Ricoeur or have found themselves bogged down in the much more daunting _Freud & Philosophy: An Essay on Interpretation_ (Trans. Denis Savage, 1970).
_On Psychoanalysis_ is a brilliant romp through several of Ricoeur's lesser-known (in some cases unpublished variations of) lectures and publications. As wide-ranging as the work is, it progresses seamlessly, keeping psychoanalysis and Freud at the forefront, through diverse topics such as hermeneutics, the self and identity, image and symbolism, theology, art, and narrative, just to name a few topics.
I think the work is a valuable aid to any researcher at any level of familiarity with Ricoeur, specifically with those interested in Ricoeur's thoughts on Freud.
Among the more insightful moments of the work, I found his chapter on "Psychoanalysis and Hermeneutics" (50-72) particularly thought-provoking: "[I]ndirect, mediated understanding begins from misunderstanding. This is a rule of every hermeneutics. There is interpretation . . . where there is first misunderstanding" (71). What a liberating and forgiving, it would seem, approach to our human, all too human, abilities to interpret, misinterpret, then reinterpret.
A delightful read for any thinker.
