About the Author
Manuel Castells is University Professor and Wallis Annenberg Chair of Communication Technology and Society at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, as well as Professor Emeritus of Sociology and Planning, University of California, Berkeley. He has published 26 books including the trilogy "The Information Age: Economy, Society, and Culture", translated in 22 languages, and "Communication Power". He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, the British Academy, the Academia Europaea, and the Spanish Royal Academy of Economics. He was a founding board member of the European Research Council. He was awarded the 2012 Holberg Prize from the Parliament of Norway.

Modern Technology as a determining factor in updating Democratic systems

This is another great contribution from Prof. Castells to understanding our changing social and political world. The content is most pertinent in a moment when, clearly, concepts such as right and left, political systems and their major actors, are utterly under-rated. Their steps are often against the majority interests and create critical conflicts. Citizens realize the mighty power of Internet, cells..... as tools to mobilize political wills, beyond classic party infrastructures, more and more inadequate. No doubt, beyond traditional participatory ways, Democratic systems will have to take into account the increasing social networks and new technologies as means to asses change in a new era. In short, the rules of the political game are, clearly, changing and nothing will be like before. Excellent, timely reading.

I cannot recommend this excellent title enough. Millions of people all across the world are connecting / banding together to create social movements of change. And the internet, like a modern day "Silk Road", has become the highway of trade and exchange...but this time it's a trade & exchange of ideas....
If you want a quick glimpse of the current pulse of the changing face of numerous societies all across the world...then this title is definitely for you....

Usefulness is limited without an index

I bought this book to use as a source for my master's thesis. I want specific things out of it, not to read the entire thing. Unfortunately, there is no index. What kind of book like this doesn't have an index?! I have dozens of other books that I have to go through as well as countless articles. I don't have time to scan every page looking for keywords to find the topics that I need.
