Does the Richness of the Few Benefit Us All?, by Zygmunt Bauman

It is commonly assumed that the best way to help the poor out of their misery is to allow the rich to get richer, that if the rich pay less taxes then all the rest of us will be better off, and that in the final analysis the richness of the few benefits us all. And yet these commonly held beliefs are flatly contradicted by our daily experience, an abundance of research findings and, indeed, logic. Such bizarre discrepancy between hard facts and popular opinions makes one pause and ask: why are these opinions so widespread and resistant to accumulated and fast-growing evidence to the contrary?

This short book is by one of the world’s leading social thinkers is an attempt to answer this question. Bauman lists and scrutinizes the tacit assumptions and unreflected-upon convictions upon which such opinions are grounded, finding them one by one to be false, deceitful and misleading. Their persistence could be hardly sustainable were it not for the role they play in defending - indeed, promoting and reinforcing - the current, unprecedented, indefensible and still accelerating growth in social inequality and the rapidly widening gap between the elite of the rich and the rest of society.

Makes obvious points that scores of others have also made, but who is listening?
By Robert Moore
I can't disagree with anything that Bauman says in this small little book - actually not much larger than what would be considered a pamphlet - but I do wonder why it is that anyone at this point would disagree. If there is any position in economic theory that is less plausible at this point in history, it is any of the various versions of trickle down. The argument ought to strike anyone as pure bunk the very second they first hear it. There is a marvelous story that I heard attributed to Will Rogers, but in subsequent reading of Rogers I can't find in his writings. So let me say it is possibly original to Rogers. It sounds like Rogers. In it, he quips that some people think gold is like water: put it at the top and it will trickle down to everything underneath. But, he says, gold isn't like water at all; put it at the top, and it just stays there. The story is a perfect analogy for the truth about trickle down economics. If you shift portions of wealth in society to the wealthy, the only thing it achieves is furthering enriching the wealthy. The was shown in the 1890s. It was shown in the 1920s. It was shown by the massive Reagan tax cuts in the 1980s (though most people forget or choose to have never known that Reagan also shoved through the largest peacetime tax increases after the huge deficit he created slowed down the economy; only the new tax cuts pushed more of the burden over to the middle class). The failure of the Bush tax cuts in the past decade did nothing to prove that trickle down didn't work. That had already been proven beyond any question. All the Bush tax cuts proved was that there is a segment of our society that simply doesn't care if others have to suffer for their benefit.

As a principle, the United States has embraced welfare for the very rich, as we employ a variety of methods to enable the wealthy to simply keep all that they obtain. I don't see that changing any time soon simply because this has not, for some reason, angered enough Americans. Until it does, we are going to continue to allow a very small number of Americans to possess vastly more than they are entitled to. Benjamin Franklin was one of the wealthiest Americans of his time and was a passionate believer in a progressive income tax. He made a large amount of money, he said, because the rest of Americans had provided a society and structure to make his economic success possible. Today the very rich seem to think that somehow they have done something that makes them somehow more worthy. Franklin felt that he should pay a much larger amount of taxes than the poor because it was by the effort of everyone in a society that made all of it possible.

Bauman's book is not among the best that I've read on the subject, but there is nothing I find untrue or inaccurate in it, and I'll give it five stars for being spot on. We are in one of the most immoral periods of American history in my opinion. We have become a nation obsessed with wealth. This stands in contrast with John Maynard Keynes in a remarkable piece he wrote called "Economic Possibilities for Our Grandchildren." In it, he imagined what the goals of people under advanced capitalism would me. He didn't conceive that the mere acquisition of more money when one already had enough would be a possibility. Instead, he thought people would seek more leisure, cultivate more hobbies, develop more sophisticated interests, and above all seek shorter work weeks. Why work 40 or more hours when you could work 18 and have all the money you would need. But capitalism has not developed in the way that Keynes thought it would. Instead of doing something interesting with their lives, the very rich merely devote their lives to making more money.

Not Very Impressive
By Clarissa's Blog
Zygmunt Bauman is one of the leading thinkers of our times whose work has inspired several generations of philosophers, sociologists, and literary critics. Unfortunately, as a popularizer of his complex ideas, Bauman is not that good.

My problem with this book is that its intended audience does not seem to exist. People who are likely to read Bauman don't need to be persuaded that trickle-down theories of economics are ridiculous. And people who really believe that the concentration of wealth in the hands of a tiny group of multi-billionaires benefits a society at large will not have the intellectual sophistication to understand Bauman's books or even know who he is.

I have been reading everything Bauman publishes but this book gave me nothing of value. I know everything he says here and the book felt like repetitive and insistent preaching to the converted.

Why greed is not good
By Malvin
“Does the Richness of the Few Benefit Us All?” by Zygmunt Bauman meaningfully addresses perhaps the central issue facing democracy in our time. At age 88, Professor Bauman remains one of the world’s most influential sociologists. This concise, thoughtful and accessible book will interest readers contemplating the ethics of greed versus mutuality; and what we can do about it.

Professor Bauman shares statistics illustrating the extreme divide that has opened between the haves and the have-nots. With purchasing power concentrated in fewer hands, the economy has suffered through both inflated asset bubbles and slower growth due to anemic consumer demand. Critiquing Margaret Thatcher’s ill-considered comment about innate talent, the author suggests that we can do far better by lifting up the masses through improvements to the greater social environment.

Professor Bauman cites important thinkers from the past who share his contention that greed is not good. For example, John Maynard Keynes hoped that a more peaceful, artistic and spiritual steady-state economy would emerge once humanity’s basic material needs were met. Ivan Illich believed that human conviviality was far more satisfying than the pursuit of material goods. And so on. Simply put, through Professor Bauman's demonstrated mastery of philosophy and understanding of our unique time and place in history, we are empowered to struggle for the better future that can be ours, if we want it.

I highly recommend this excellent book to everyone.

Statebuilding, by Timothy Sisk

After civil wars end, what can sustain peace in the long-term? In particular, how can outsiders facilitate durable conflict-managing institutions through statebuilding - a process that historically has been the outcome of bloody struggles to establish the state's authority over warlords, traditional authorities, and lawless territories?

In this book, Timothy Sisk explores international efforts to help the world’s most fragile post-civil war countries today build viable states that can provide for security and deliver the basic services essential for development. Tracing the historical roots of statebuilding to the present day, he demonstrates how the United Nations, leading powers, and well-meaning donors have engaged in statebuilding as a strategic approach to peacebuilding after war. Their efforts are informed by three key objectives: to enhance security by preventing war recurrence and fostering community and human security; to promote development through state provision of essential services such as water, sanitation, and education; to enhance human rights and democracy, reflecting the liberal international order that reaffirms the principles of democracy and human rights, .

Improving governance, alongside the state's ability to integrate social differences and manage conflicts over resources, identity, and national priorities, is essential for long-term peace. Whether the global statebuilding enterprise can succeed in creating a world of peaceful, well-governed, development-focused states is unclear. But the book concludes with a road map toward a better global regime to enable peacebuilding and development-oriented statebuilding into the 21st century.

"A thorough examination of why statebuilding is essential to peacebuilding, and a richly documented case for why the international community should assist statebuilding in fragile states."
International Affairs

"Readers looking for an interesting and accessible account of contemporary practice and the debates which surround it will be very satisfied."
LSE Review of Books

"A comprehensive account of the evolution of the international response to civil war and the challenge of post-conflict peacebuilding. An important challenge to much contemporary policy, Statebuilding will quickly take a place among the 'must read' accounts of contemporary statebuilding."
Bruce Jones, Brookings and the NYU Center on International Cooperation; senior advisor to the WDR 2011 on Conflict, Security and Development

"Sisk's book is the best guide to 'statebuilding' I know. It provides conceptual clarity and a framework for international action. It is written with clear-headed commitment and a seriousness of purpose that leaves the reader in no doubt that we are dealing with one of the key challenges of the modern era."
Khalid Koser, Geneva Centre for Security Policy

"A lucid and highly accessible defense of how the building of states after civil war by international intervention is essential to peace. It is a very fine culmination of a research agenda on liberal internationalism begun a decade ago. Teachers will find Statebuilding extremely comprehensive on the current orthodoxy."

Homo Economicus: The (Lost) Prophet of Modern Times, by Daniel Cohen

The West has long defined the pursuit of happiness in economic terms but now, in the wake of the 2007-8 financial crisis, it is time to think again about what constitutes our happiness.

In this wide-ranging new book, the leading economist Daniel Cohen traces our current malaise back to the rise of homo economicus: for the last 200 years, the modern world has defined happiness in terms of material gain. Homo economicus has cast aside its rivals, homo ethicus and homo empathicus, and spread its neo-Darwinian logic far and wide. Yet, instead of bringing happiness, homo economicus traps human beings in a world devoid of any ideals. We are left feeling empty and dissatisfied.

Today more and more people are beginning to recognize that competition and material gain are not the only things that matter in life. The central paradox of our era is that we look to the economy to give direction to our world at the very time when social needs are migrating toward sectors that are hard to place within the scope of market logic. Health, education, scientific research, and the world of the Internet form the heart of our post-industrial societies, but none of these belong to the traditional economic mould. While human creativity is higher than ever, homo economicus imposes himself like a sad prophet, a killjoy of the new age.

Drawing on a rich array of examples, Cohen explores the new digital and genetic revolutions and examines the limitations of homo economicus in our rapidly transforming world. As human beings have an extraordinary ability to adapt, he argues that we need to rebalance the relation between competition and cooperation in favour of the latter.

This thought-provoking analysis of our contemporary predicament will be of great value to anyone interested in the relationship between what happens in our economies and our personal happiness.

Review
"What are we losing, as we are increasingly pressured to define the pursuit of happiness in narrowly economic terms? That is the question Daniel Cohen asks – and indeed answers – with frequently piercing new insights in this thought-provoking combination of ancient history, sociology, psychology and alternative economics."
Colin Crouch, University of Warwick

"The economy is the driving force of our world but to what end?  In a fascinating book, the economist Daniel Cohen offers a long-term perspective on the relation between the search for individual happiness and the market.  He shows how the market, in imposing its own model and valuing competition above everything else, has disrupted the relations between human beings.  The emergence and eventual triumph of Homo Economicus has led to the collapse or stagnation of the indicators of wellbeing in the most advanced countries."
Libération

"Find happiness, or try to achieve it: a topic addressed often in the past by literature or philosophy is now a topic for economics.   In Homo Economicus, the economist Daniel Cohen shows how our ultra-competitive societies have disrupted social relations and undermined all the indicators of wellbeing. He starts from a sombre fact: never before has so much wealth been created, never have people had access to so many goods, and yet they are not happier – if anything they are less happy.  Why?"
Le Monde

More the outline of a good book than a good book, it nonetheless points towards the failure of the market to achieve happiness
By Robert Moore
I have to confess at the outset that I'm adding a star for good intentions. Daniel Cohen has written an interesting but sometimes underdeveloped book about ways the world has gone write, specifically about what the economist Robert E. Lane has called THE LOSS OF HAPPINESS IN MARKET DEMOCRACIES. I almost always loathe personifications, and do so here as well, as Cohen goes on in the book to write of Homo Economicus - or those who see participation in market economic activities as the highest goal of human aspiration - as well as Homo Ethicus and Homo Empathicus - as those who would see the highest goal of human achievement in moral or cooperative ventures.

The book starts off by announcing the failure of Homo Economicus, born of the 18th century (though most of the intellectual foundations were in place by the late 17th century) and incarnated in spheres as empire. He goes on to point out several ways in which this view of human nature has failed. I especially liked that Cohen did not abuse Darwin in writing of economics as so many other have done. In fact, two figures often associated with free market ideology - Adam Smith as well as Darwin - would have detested attempts to associate their names with free market fundamentalism. Using Cohen's terminology, Smith clearly was an advocate of Homo Empathicus and all of his writing was motivated by the desire to better the lives of the poor, and not through trickle down! He felt market economies (which he did NOT feel were driven by an Invisible Hand - in fact, in the 5 or 6 passages in his entire corpus, Smith merely states the modest view that people pursuing their own ENLIGHTENED self-interest [a qualifier always left out of today's free market fundamentalism, which assumes that any interest is self-justifying and by definition enlightened] DID NOT ALWAYS lead to unfortune outcomes [whereas today's free market fundamentalists ignore Smith's qualifications to claim that ALL market activity behaves as if guided by an Invisible Hand; but, then, Smith also believed in the government for providing far more services than today's fundys, which begs the question of how many free marketers have actually read Adam Smith, and of those who have, how many understood him]). In fact, Smith felt that compassion and sympathy and not unbridled self-interest should guide our behavior with others. Meanwhile, Darwin did not believe in the survival of the fittest (a phrase coined not by Darwin but by proto-libertarian Herbert Spencer; interestingly, a number of market fundamentalists who know that Darwin didn't coin the phrase, bizarrely ascribe the phrase and the belief to Karl Marx, who actually believed, like Marx and Adam Smith, in human cooperation as being the highest human achievement). Cohen actually calls so much attributed to Darwin as "Darwin's nightmare."

While I wish the book was much longer than it is (only 126 pages excluding footnotes - and as one who can recognize an old term paper trick, the book has relatively wide margins, small number of lines, and somewhat larger font than one usually finds in such books, meaning that the word count is probably quite small for a 126 page book), it nevertheless points in some interesting directions. This is, I've noticed, a tendency in a lot of Polity Press books. Now, as a Leftist (and I call myself that rather than Liberal because of the ambiguity in the L word: for most of the world a liberal is not a leftist but a right winger, with Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan as two of the most prominent liberals of the 20th century, which they were). The position on the left should be Progressive or Socialist. And I'll accept that label. Let's face it, Liberalism, the correct term for those believing in a self-regulating free market, has led to economic catastrophe for most of the world, characterized as it is by an ability to generate great wealth and then concentrate it in the hands of a few. Socialism has never really been tried in a fairly well off country. Maybe it is time to give that idea a try (and remember, you didn't really have real socialism in either the Soviet Union or China).

more philosophical follow up to Piketty's Capital
By Amazon Customer
This reads more like a philosophy / ethics book than an economics book. Starting off with a modern version of the ten commandments which are very nice. The theme is that Homo Economicus has dominated modern and into postmodern times but that in doing so much that actually leads to happiness is lost. Along with a turn towards a competitive economics, individuals find themselves in a dilemma where material needs still must be met but alone do not satisfy the wants encouraged by entertainment and the digital developments that have also undercut the means many used to use to supply those material necessities. Lots of good questions arise as a result of these analyses. For the most part this book is a summary of many other books with an effort to glean from the comparisons essential factors that help improve our understanding of how things are and where they may be heading. In this I found the summaries to be in good touch with what I remember of the books I knew and I assume then the books I do not, so for the short work that it is the book covers lots of contemporary ground. For example, the book from just this summer by Thomas Piketty gets this treatment. It may even been partly what inspired this book as it works well as a more philosophical follow up to Capital in the Twenty-First Century.

Challenges assumptions about the relationship between the economy and personal happiness
By Kcorn
Even though this is a relatively short book, it is rich in detail and may require not only close reading - but also rereading - to fully grasp the concepts presented by author Daniel Cohen. I had to review each chapter several times to get a better comprehension of the book's essential information. A main focus is how economic and social changes contribute to happiness and the often surprising ways that modern improvements actually increase unhappiness. This is a very broad explanation of what is in the book and reading it is required for a deeper perspective.

While I can't possibly cover the main points in any sort of depth, I do want to highlight some of the central topics and Cohen's basic approach to them. He begins by noting that even though many relatively wealthy countries have modern conveniences that didn't exist in the past, making life less "nasty, brutish, and short", a significant number of people aren't any happier and may even feel much worse.. He cites statistics which reveal that 14 percent of Americans (under the age of thirty-five) have suffered a major bout of depression. This rate of depression has also soared in France and in many other societies.

Even those who aren't severely depressed may not feel significantly happier. This can greatly affect the economy. Other factors also come into play. I thought Cohen provided an excellent example when he wrote about the director of a blood bank who wanted to increase the number of blood donors. He thought they'd flock to the center if he provided a financial reward. Instead, donations dropped. On the surface, this seems to make no sense. Why wouldn't people want to benefit financially?

It seemed perplexing until Cohen explained that people have competing drives: one is to act for the good of others and that is its own reward. But when they are paid for giving blood a different part of their brain takes over, one that is less cooperative and altruistic. As Cohen explains it, these two parts of the brain "can not be seated at the same table."

This is a point that is stressed repeatedly in Homo Economicus; the conflict between the desire to seek a common good for society and the competitive drive. Employers don't consider these competing drives when they make the mistake of trying to raise productivity by offering bonuses to their employees. Cohen's research indicates that bonuses affects productivity negatively, in a similar way to those who were paid for donating blood. It lowers the "moral value" of work, the intrinsic pleasure of a job well done, and doesn't achieve the desired benefits for the company.

All of this is just a small part of what is contained in Homo Economicus. Other chapters focus on the diminishing value of work, gross domestic happiness (with a fascinating section on the adverse effects of television in Bhutan), the complexities of globalization and the economy, the dangers of "virtual communites" on the Internet and the threats to building a true sense of community, and more. Cohen ties these topics to happiness - and unhappiness - and the often surprising ways the economy may be affected. My assumptions were often challenged.

Highly recommended.

Representation, by Monica Brito Vieira, David Runciman

What is representation? What does it mean when a politician represents citizens in government? How can citizens be represented beyond the boundaries of the nation-state?

These are just some of the questions which will be answered by David Runciman and Mónica Brito Vieira as they explain why representation should be understood as one of the key concepts in modern politics. The first part of the book examines the historical roots of the concept of representation, from its origins in ancient Rome through to its role in the revolutionary politics of the modern world. The second looks at different varieties of representation – in law as well as politics. The final part asks how the concept of representation can help us think creatively about current and future challenges facing the world.

Representation is too often treated as a secondary or qualifying idea – as in the phrase ‘representative democracy’. This book argues that we have this the wrong way round. Representation is the foundational idea in almost all areas of our political life. Making sense of representation in its own terms is crucial for seeing why democracy functions the way it does, and for exploring how it might function differently.

Review
“Runciman and Vieira track the history of the idea of representation, break apart the complex of themes that it encodes, and reveal some salient lessons for the internal and external organization of states. This is rich, intriguing and important stuff — political theory at its best.”
Philip Pettit, Princeton University

“The authors succeed splendidly in their admirable ambition to survey the past, present and future of the concept of representation in a manner that is at once accessible and original, giving both neophyte and expert plenty to think about.”
Richard Bellamy, University College London

What's Wrong with Climate Politics and How to Fix It, by Paul G. Harris

Governments have failed to stem global emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases causing climate change. Indeed, climate-changing pollution is increasing globally, and will do so for decades to come without far more aggressive action. What explains this failure to effectively tackle one of the world's most serious problems? And what can we do about it?

To answer these questions, Paul G. Harris looks at climate politics as a doctor might look at a very sick patient. He performs urgent diagnoses and prescribes vital treatments to revive our ailing planet before it's too late.

The book begins by diagnosing what’s most wrong with climate politics, including the anachronistic international system, which encourages nations to fight for their narrowly perceived interests and makes major cuts in greenhouse pollution extraordinarily difficult; the deadlock between the United States and China, which together produce over one-third of global greenhouse gas pollution but do little more than demand that the other act first; and affluent lifestyles and overconsumption, which are spreading rapidly from industrialized nations to the developing world.

The book then prescribes several "remedies" for the failed politics of climate change, including a new kind of climate diplomacy with people at its center, national policies that put the common but differentiated responsibilities of individuals alongside those of nations, and a campaign for simultaneously enhancing human wellbeing and environmental sustainability. While these treatments are aspirational, they are not intended to be utopian. As Harris shows, they are genuine, workable solutions to what ails the politics of climate change today.

Life Transitions in America, by Francesco Duina

We celebrate, talk about, and worry a great deal about transitions in life. Going to college, having a first child, losing a job, and retiring constitute just a few of the pivotal moments in the lives of many. Sociologists and psychologists have devoted considerable attention to life transitions. Yet we know very little about whether there exists a common thread to our understandings of life transitions in general. How do journalists, leading politicians, sport icons, bestselling authors, government agencies, Hallmark cards, popular TV shows, and other “voices” of popular culture talk about transitions in life? Do these voices provide a coherent picture of how we make sense of life transitions?

In this book, Francesco Duina shows how the dominant American discourse articulates two basic approaches to transitions in life. The first approach depicts transitions as exciting, individualistic opportunities for new beginnings: the past is cast aside, the future is wide open, and the self has the opportunity to recreate itself anew. The second paints transitions as having to do with continuity, our connections to others, and the life-cycle, with an emphasis on acceptance and adaptation. Though contrasting, the two approaches ultimately complement each other. Their analysis reveals a great deal about American culture and society, and will be of great interest to students of the life course and the sociology of culture.

Review

''Duina has given us a great book on the nature of American culture--rigorous, empirically driven and able to explain the extraordinary capacity of Americans to reinvent themselves.''
John A. Hall, McGill University

''Life Transitions in America is a thoughtful, beautifully written and carefully researched treatment of eight major transitions from adolescence through the end of life. Each transition is treated in a separate chapter in which Duina combines sociological and psychological research, his own theoretical framing, and expert opinion to understand how American culture sees this change. The result is a pleasure to read, thought provoking, and ultimately satisfying.''
Linda Waite, University of Chicago

''This is an exciting project, part of a larger return in sociology to telling big stories about individuals and society. This sorely needed book asks weighty questions about why and how we focus on, define, and respond to major life transitions. Duina analyzes a rich range of data sources, from popular culture to surveys, to better understand the social shaping of life's milestones.''
Kelly Joyce, Drexel University

Francesco Duina is Professor and Head of Sociology at the University of British Columbia, Canada. He is also Visiting Professor in the Department of Business and Politics at the Copenhagen Business School in Denmark.

Sociology from a common man's perspective.
By Kevin Regan
Duina takes an unorthodox approach to portraying the American discourse on life transitions. Don't be fooled, this book is not just for academic purposes. It should be enjoyed by people of all ages. He utilizes sources that we see in our everyday life to explain how Americans approach major life transitions. A great read that shouldn't be looked past.

Concepts of the Self, by Anthony Elliott

More than ten years on from its original publication, Concepts of the Self still mesmerizes with its insight, comprehensiveness and critique of debates over the self in the social sciences and humanities. Anthony Elliott has written a new preface to this third edition to address some of the most recent developments in the field, and offers a powerful challenge to what he describes as ‘the emergence of anti-theories of the self’.

The first two editions have proven exceptionally popular among students and teachers worldwide. Anthony Elliott provides a scintillating introduction to the major accounts of the self from symbolic interactionism and psychoanalysis to post-feminism and postmodernism. This new edition has been extensively revised and updated to take account of more recent theoretical developments, and a new chapter has been added on individualization which focuses on how the self becomes an agent of ‘do-it-yourself’ autobiographical reconstruction in an age of intensive globalization.

Concepts of the Self remains the most lively, lucid and compelling introduction to contemporary controversies over the self and self-identity in the social sciences and humanities. Written by an author of international reputation, it connects debates about the self directly to identity politics, the sociology of personal relationships and intimacy, and the politics of sexuality, and will continue to be an invaluable introductory text for students in of social and political theory, sociology, social psychology, cultural studies, and gender studies.

Review
'What Anthony Elliott accomplished in the first edition of Concepts of the Self was remarkable. Here, a third time around, he does it yet again – even better! No one writing today has the range and depth of Elliott's understanding of self theory. He writes with confidence and clarity, and with great care for all the prominent concepts of self. No one I know can write so reliably of the classic theorists in the same concise book as of the newest queer and postmodern ones. No reader, whether student or scholar, will want to be without this brilliant book – a claim certified by the thousands of students who enjoyed the first two editions.'
Charles Lemert, Yale University

'This great little book contains everything you wished but did not dare to ask about the meaning of the "self" – one of the thorniest, most contentious, exciting and enraging issues of our times and our lives in these times. To the questions you might have asked or are likely to ask yet, Elliott offers answers that are carefully weighted, balanced and realistic – drawing from the vast treasury of sociological insights and moving freely between the variety of complementary, even if ostensibly adversarial, perspectives. Elliott's book is good to read, to learn from and to think with. It helps to understand what it means to "have a self" and to "be oneself" – an understanding that itself is a foremost condition of both. This new edition makes sure that our knowledge and understanding continue to be up to date.'
Zygmunt Bauman, University of Leeds

About the Author
Anthony Elliott is research professor of sociology and Director of the Hawke Research Institute at the University of South Australia, and a fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia. He was a distinguished visiting professor at Wesleyan University from 2003 to 2007. His many books include On Society, Contemporary Social Theory and (with John Urry) Mobile Lives.
