Cosmopolitanism and International Relations Theory, by Richard Beardsworth

Globalization has been contested in recent times. Among the critical perspectives is cosmopolitanism. Yet, with the exception of normative theory, international relations as a field has ignored cosmopolitan thinking. This book redresses this gap and develops a dialogue between cosmopolitanism and international relations. The dialogue is structured around three debates between non-universalist theories of international relations and contemporary cosmopolitan thought.

The theories chosen are realism, (post-)Marxism and postmodernism. All three criticize liberalism in the international domain, and, therefore, cosmopolitanism as an offshoot of liberalism. In the light of each school's respective critique of universalism, the book suggests both the importance and difficulty of the cosmopolitan perspective in the contemporary world. Beardsworth emphasizes the need for global leadership at nation-state level, re-embedding of the world economy, a cosmopolitan politics of the lesser violence, and cosmopolitan political judgement. He also suggests research agendas to situate further contemporary cosmopolitanism in international relations theory.

This book will appeal to all students of political theory and international relations, especially those who are seeking more articulation of the main issues between cosmopolitanism and its critics in international relations.

Review
"A must-read for anyone interested in understanding how both cosmopolitanism and postmodern IR can offer insightful political advice to Realism without either falling back on a programmatic ethics or becoming complicit in oppression for the sake of unconditional singularity."
Millennium

"An essential reader for students of international relations theory and those seeking a foundational text to cosmopolitanism with clear depictions of the linkage and responses to its critics."
Central European Journal of International and Security Studies

"The author's tolerantly critical and systematic approach allows him to meet each critical debate with an especiallywell-tailored and zealously argued cosmopolian response, which is bound to appeal to scholars of law and politics."
Political Studies Review

"Beardsworth interrogates contemporary cosmopolitanism with the traditions of international relations theory most critical of it. The sophisticated cosmopolitan liberalism he unfolds in response is resourceful, often surprising, and wise."
Leif Wenar, King's College London

"Cosmopolitanism is now a central framework for thinking about questions of international relations and global politics. In this superb book, Richard Beardsworth draws together themes from cosmopolitan thinking and rival traditions of international thought to produce a fascinating synthesis that shows a way forward for cosmopolitan insights that neither ignores nor denies the difficulties and problems international relations displays. An important and original argument which all those interested in international political theory should read."
Nicholas Rengger, St Andrews University

"Cosmopolitanism and International Relations Theory is an incisive contribution to international political theory. Philosophically wide-ranging, analytically rigorous and politically engaged, this important book both challenges and enriches contemporary debates, while providing new directions for theory and recommendations for practice. As an impressive tour d'horizon, and a significant philosophic contribution, this is a book that cosmopolitans, their critics and international political theorists of all kinds will find essential reading and ground for engagement."
Michael C. Williams, École supérieure d'affaires publiques et internationales

Hobbes, by Bernard Gert

Thomas Hobbes was the first great English political philosopher. His work excited intense controversy among his contemporaries and continues to do so in our own time. In this masterly introduction to his work, Bernard Gert provides the first account of Hobbes’s political and moral philosophy that makes it clear why he is regarded as one of the best philosophers of all time in both of these fields. In a succinct and engaging analysis the book illustrates that the commonly accepted view of Hobbes as holding psychological egoism is not only incompatible with his account of human nature but is also incompatible with the moral and political theories that he puts forward. It also explains why Hobbes’s contemporaries did not accept his explicit claim to be providing a natural law account of morality.

Gert shows that for Hobbes, civil society is established by a free-gift of their right of nature by the citizens; it does not involve a mutual contract between citizens and sovereign. As injustice involves breaking a contract, the sovereign cannot be unjust; however, the sovereign can be guilty of ingratitude, which is immoral. This distinction between injustice and immorality is part of a sophisticated and nuanced political theory that is in stark contrast to the reading often incorrectly attributed to Hobbes that “might makes right”. It illustrates how Hobbes’s goal of avoiding civil war provides the key to understanding his moral and political philosophy.

Hobbes: Prince of Peace is likely to become the classic introduction to the work of Thomas Hobbes and will be a valuable resource for scholars and students seeking to understand the importance and relevance of his work today.

Review
"The present reviewer is very enthusiastic about this book. It should be recommended to all those that are looking for an understandable and thorough introduction to the moral and political theories of Hobbes."
Ethical Perspectives

"A sympathetic reading that will be valuable for those interested in Hobbes' enduring philosophical relevance."
Political Studies Review

"Gert succeeds in clarifying the important parts of Hobbes' philosophy ... Experts will welcome this book as a collection of ideas from an influential authority on Hobbes."
Tijdschrift voor Filosofie

"Bernard Gert's book provides beginning students with an outstanding introduction to the main philosophical concepts and interpretive debates needed for understanding Hobbes's philosophy. Gert puts Hobbes's works into historical context, plausibly explains his motives, and offers a critical yet constructive account of his moral and political philosophies. Gert's is a model of clarity and thoughtful scholarship."
Sharon Lloyd, University of Southern California

"Bernard Gert has here produced the new standard interpretation of Hobbes's philosophy. The writing throughout is completely accessible to readers working even at the most elementary level of philosophy, ethics, or political science. Nonetheless, philosophers will like it for its precision and careful analyses of controversial topics; non-philosophers for its clarity and its ability to supplement the original without loss of content. This is THE book on Hobbes for the coming generation."
Stefan Baumrin, City University of New York Graduate Center

"Hobbes: Prince of Peace, by Bernard Gert, is the long-awaited product of his 45 years of immersion in the Hobbes corpus. In it, Gert he weaves together the many threads of Hobbes's theory into a single comprehensive account. Showing that readers shouldn't always take what Hobbes writes completely literally, Gert argues for an innovative reading of Hobbes's view on the interrelation between key concepts, such as reason, the laws of nature, and the moral law, and for recognizing distinctions that have heretofore been overlooked. This provocative book will surely be an important touchstone for Hobbes scholarship in the future."
Rosamond Rhodes, Mount Sinai School of Medicine

War and the Cultural Turn, by Jeremy Black

In this stimulating new text, renowned military historian Jeremy Black unpacks the concept of culture as a descriptive and analytical approach to the history of warfare. Black takes the reader through the limits and prospects of culture as a tool for analyzing war, while also demonstrating the necessity of maintaining the context of alternative analytical matrices, such as technology.

Black sets out his unique approach to culture and warfare without making his paradigm into a straightjacket. He goes on to demonstrate the flexibility of his argument through a series of case studies which include the contexts of rationale (Gloire), strategy (early modern Britaisn), organizations (the modern West), and ideologies (the Cold War). These case studies drive home the point at the core of the book: culture is not a bumper sticker; it is a survival mechanism. Culture is not immutable; it is adaptable.

Wide-ranging, international and always provocative, War and the Cultural Turn will be required reading for all students of military history and security studies.

Review
"Black's thoughts and arguments on what he terms the 'cultural turn' in military history are important and
will be widely read by military historians."
Parergon

"A thoughtful and informed study that draws on a wide range of examples."
European History Quarterly

"This book is profoundly important for historians of warfare, but above all for its practitioners."
John France, Swansea University

"This work fills an intellectual niche: it is the only one establishing culture as a flexible, malleable concept. Key themes, above all the flexible nature of culture and the limits and prospects of its use as a tool for analyzing war,are clearly demonstrated. The book's thesis is also effectively contextualized with alternative analytical matrices, such as technology as a key determinant. Jeremy Black is one of the few scholars of war who commands the sources and goes beyond them."
Dennis Showalter, Colorado College

China and Taiwan (China Today), by Steven M. Goldstein

Relations between Taiwan and the People?s Republic of China have oscillated between outright hostility and wary detente ever since the Archipelago seceded from the Communist mainland over six decades ago. While the mainland has long coveted the island, Taiwan has resisted - aided by the United States which continues to play a decisive role in cross-strait relations today.

In this comprehensive analysis, noted China specialist Steven Goldstein shows that although relations between Taiwan and its larger neighbor have softened, underlying tensions remain unresolved. These embers of conflict could burst into flames at any point, engulfing the whole region and potentially dragging the United States into a dangerous confrontation with the PRC

Guiding readers expertly through the historical background to the complexities of this fragile peace, Goldstein discusses the shifting economic, political and security terrain, and examines the pivotal role played by the United States in providing weapons and diplomatic support to Taiwan whilst managing a complex relationship with an increasingly powerful China. Drawing on a wealth of newly declassified material, this compelling and insightful book is an invaluable guide to one of the world?s riskiest, long-running conflicts.

Feelings and Moods, by Christophe André

Happiness, sadness, compassion, resentment, despair: just some of the feelings and moods that characterize the lives of each one of us.  They are part and parcel of our everyday lives and they affect everything we do, like a kind of mental climate that surrounds and permeates our activities and thoughts.  But what exactly are these ever-present feelings and moods?

Here the leading psychiatrist Christophe André analyses feelings and moods as the contents of consciousness that mix together emotions and thoughts, the background sensations and impressions that are less intense than primary emotions like anger but longer lasting and more influential – a slight feeling of guilt can poison the entire day.  Their impact is more comprehensive because they owe their existence not to a particular situation or event that triggers them but rather to our relationship with the world in general.

Drawing on his own practice as a psychiatrist, André explores some of the most important feelings and moods and shows how, by understanding them better, we can achieve a calmer, happier and more fulfilling life.

Written in the fresh and accessible style that has won him a large international following, Feelings and Moods will appeal to a wide readership.

'No one I know except for Christophe André can write in such a rhapsodic, poetic, poignant and personally honest way about such quintessentially human experiences as feelings and moods – energies which, while evanescent and subtle, run our lives in ways it is very easy to ignore.  This book illuminates the very real possibility of authentic well-being and happiness for each of us, right here and now, without anything having to change, however astonishing and improbable that proposition may seem.'
Jon Kabat-Zinn, author of Mindfulness for Beginners and Coming to Our Senses

'Moods establish the inner "weather" of the mind – perhaps bright and sunny, or overcast and troubled – and with his rare combination of head and heart, Christophe André shows what creates this weather and how we can change it for the better.'
Rick Hanson, author of Buddha's Brain: The Practical Neuroscience of Happiness, Love, and Wisdom

'Christophe André leads us through a heartfelt encounter with the ubiquity and complexity of emotional life.  Take your time reading his evocative prose and find yourself rewarded with a new appreciation for how thoughts and feelings are foundational in achieving greater satisfaction and purposefulness in your life.'
Zindel Segal, University of Toronto

A unique blending of philosophical and clinical perspectives on emotions.
By K. Salinger, Holistic Nurse Practitioner
This is a very dense book, and not particularly suited to the casual reader unless they have a strong interest in philosophy and/or psychology.

I personally enjoy the book but I've always been 'into' philosophy and I also have a masters in psychology and work in the field. I purchased the book to help with my private practice as well as a psychiatry practice I contract with and I've found it useful and interesting.

For example, on page 44 there is a chart which illustrates the differences between rumination - looking for faults, mistakes and blame while magnifying the problem and focusing on the "why" (a place of judgement), vs. reflection - looking for understanding of the problem and solutions, which focuses on the "what to do now/next" (non-judgmental). While rumination and reflection aren't that hard to explain, breaking it down into multiple facets as the chart does(it has 8 differentials between the two) gives me different ways of discussing the two so that I might find the explanation or point that most resonates with my client. Even in a practice setting where the focus is primarily on medication management, such as the psychiatric practice I contract with, I still try to give tools and guidance to help clients understand how they can self-manage feelings and emotions. This book is a great reference to use for this purpose so that I don't have to re-create the wheel when seeking different ways in which to describe in more depth particular feeling and mood states.

The book has been written by an author who has a solid clinical base in psychiatry, but who is also obviously interested in the "beyond biological". He blends in the philosophical, finding intersects and making connections between the two perspectives and further weaving the two together.

If you're seeking a strong biological or neurochemical perspective in relation to feelings and moods then this is not the text for you. If anything, this book is MOSTLY philosophical (about 80%), but built upon a solid biological/clinical base. The expectation that you already hold the biological/clinical base is inherent in the author's writing and perspectives which makes it more suited to professionals.

Lastly, I will also say that the text size is no different from many of my other medical texts.

Summary: Recommended for mental health professionals, not so much for casual readers unless you have a strong interest or passion for philosophy and/or psychology.

Among best psychology books I've ever read
By Chen Sun
If you are analytical minded and have been accused of not being in touch of your feelings and moods, this is a must need; because, it is an analytical view of feelings and moods processes. Most pop psychology books are somewhat inspirational (e.g., get in touch with your feelings, value of feelings, etc.) and not necessarily objectively observant as to how feelings and moods really progresses. This book defines feelings and moods and describes how they actually operationally progresses, for most people. As such, an analytical reader can develop an "analytical" framework from which to sense his and others' feelings and to begin to assess his own feelings and moods.

Unlike initial reviewer, I didn't find its print font size too small. Seems to be size 8 or 9.

An immensely thoughtful book well supported by social science experiment studies that will take some time to read; a densely written book, where each observation takes only a few paragraphs, but causes me to reflect carefully. This is among the five best psychology books I've ever read and the best I've ever reviewed.

Uses The Science of Psychology And Alternative Approaches For Regulating Mood
By MyBeesWax
I'll begin by telling you what this book is not: It's not a pop psychology book that offers quick fixes. It *is* foremost a "proper" book in psychology (complete with case studies, statistics, and theories in psychology), and secondarily a book that approaches the topic of feelings and moods from "alternative" (such as metaphysical and new age) perspectives. It is refreshingly different from mainstream psychology books in that its tone is philosophical at times and at times pedagogic.

This book offers many fresh perspectives (to me at least). For example, it establishes a link between materialism and mood disturbances and likens materialism to an addiction (such as alcoholism) that temporarily allays our psychological suffering. It is not only heavy in the science of why we feel what we feel, but suggests incorporating alternative ways (such as meditation and prayer) for improving our moods.

This book is NOT light reading. Benefiting from this book involves a somewhat laborious process of interpretation and of sifting through the book for parts that makes sense (or that are pertinent) to you. The feelings and moods examined in this book seem to cover the spectrum of human emotions (such as anxiety, resentment, sadness, despair, to name just a few). A chapter is devoted to each emotion, which is talked about at length. You don't have to read the book in any order, and you can skimp through or omit some parts and still benefit from the book.

I enjoyed this book. Although it took me a while to work my way through it, it was well worth my time. I do highly recommended it for people suffering from depression and anxiety, or for anyone looking to improve their moods.

Citizenship, by Eacute;tienne Balibar

If fundamental political categories were represented as geometric shapes, citizenship would be one of those rotating polyhedrons with reflective surfaces that together create effects of light and shade. With extraordinarily acute discernment, the leading philosopher Étienne Balibar examines one by one the various faces of this object, more numerous - and far more fissured - than one would imagine. The question of what it means to be a citizen has, from the dawn of Western politics, been anything but clear and straightforward; and modernity has shown it to be even more enigmatic and contested.

Inseparable from democracy, and the demands for equality and liberty from which democracy draws its origins, citizenship is constantly being redefined within the unresolved contradiction between universal principles and the discriminatory mechanisms that regulate membership of a political community.

Not everyone is a citizen, even within one nation-state. It has been said that ?certain persons are in society without being of society?. The dynamics of inclusion and exclusion continue to generate dramatic asymmetries and create openings and closures, especially today in a time of particular fragility and when national sovereignty is in flux. So are there too many antinomies within citizenship? Balibar does not shy away from these antimonies, but he knows that to renounce citizenship would be to abandon the chance to create new modes of collective autonomy, in short, to democratize democracy.

Review

"Citizenship can only truly exist as insurrection. Democracy must be democratized. These are the daring propositions that Balibar, Marxism’s least pious philosopher, nails to the door of neoliberalism’s church."
Bruce Robbins, Columbia University

Activists and specialists alike should read this book.......the book is a genuine contribution to radical thought. (Marx and Philosophy 2016)

The Politics of Volunteering, by Nina Eliasoph

Many of us may have participated in grassroots groups, changing the world in small and big ways, from building playgrounds and feeding the homeless, to protesting wars and ending legal segregation. Beyond the obvious fruits of these activities, what are the broader consequences of volunteering for the participants, recipients of aid, and society as a whole?

In this engaging new book, Nina Eliasoph encourages readers to reflect on their own experiences in civic associations as an entry point into bigger sociological, political, and philosophical issues, such as class inequality, how organizations work, differences in political systems around the globe, and the sources of moral selfhood. Claims about volunteering tend to be astronomical: it will create democracy, make you a better person, eliminate poverty, protect local cultures, and even prevent illness. Eliasoph cuts through these assertions by drawing on empirical studies, key data, real-life case studies, and a range of theoretical analyses.

In doing so, the book provides students of sociology, political science, and communications studies with a framework for evaluating the role of civic associations in social and political life, as well as in their own lives as active citizens.

Review

"A useful book for students on all sorts of courses … the book is written in a scholarly, informing and engaging style … The key thing about this book is that it reminds us that volunteering is political."
Journal of Social Policy

"Amid the sea of muddled thinking about civil society and social policy, Nina Eliasoph's work shines like a beacon of clarity and rigor. This honest and nuanced account of the politics of volunteering marks a landmark contribution to the field."
Michael Edwards, Distinguished Senior Fellow, Demos

"With unerring aim, Nina Eliasoph punctures some of the most cherished myths about volunteerism. Yet, with sensitivity and compassion, she shows volunteers struggling to do good while coping with contradictions not of their own making. The result is a remarkable book that brings the concept of civil society to life in all its moral messiness."
Francesca Polletta, University of California, Irvine

"The Politics of Volunteering is a pleasure to read. Nina Eliasoph helps us to understand how civic associations based on volunteering are different from but overlap with civic associations devoted to political activism, and how each may be led to cross the boundary between them. In clarifying the landscape of our public life she helps us to see how a deeper look at the total picture can help us to be more effective in our public engagement. This is a valuable book for students but also for the many thousands of volunteers and activists in our midst."
Robert Bellah, University of California, Berkeley

The Politics of Volunteering represents the kind of sociological literature that is written with both academics and a larger audience in mind. Eliasoph manages to examine challenging and complex questions with admirable clarity

"The Politics of Volunteering represents the kind of sociological literature that is written with both academics and a larger audience in mind. Eliasoph manages to examine challenging and complex questions with admirable clarity." (Sosiologia 2015)
