Feelings and Moods, by Christophe André

Happiness, sadness, compassion, resentment, despair: just some of the feelings and moods that characterize the lives of each one of us.  They are part and parcel of our everyday lives and they affect everything we do, like a kind of mental climate that surrounds and permeates our activities and thoughts.  But what exactly are these ever-present feelings and moods?

Here the leading psychiatrist Christophe André analyses feelings and moods as the contents of consciousness that mix together emotions and thoughts, the background sensations and impressions that are less intense than primary emotions like anger but longer lasting and more influential – a slight feeling of guilt can poison the entire day.  Their impact is more comprehensive because they owe their existence not to a particular situation or event that triggers them but rather to our relationship with the world in general.

Drawing on his own practice as a psychiatrist, André explores some of the most important feelings and moods and shows how, by understanding them better, we can achieve a calmer, happier and more fulfilling life.

Written in the fresh and accessible style that has won him a large international following, Feelings and Moods will appeal to a wide readership.

Review

'No one I know except for Christophe André can write in such a rhapsodic, poetic, poignant and personally honest way about such quintessentially human experiences as feelings and moods – energies which, while evanescent and subtle, run our lives in ways it is very easy to ignore.  This book illuminates the very real possibility of authentic well-being and happiness for each of us, right here and now, without anything having to change, however astonishing and improbable that proposition may seem.'
Jon Kabat-Zinn, author of Mindfulness for Beginners and Coming to Our Senses

'Moods establish the inner "weather" of the mind – perhaps bright and sunny, or overcast and troubled – and with his rare combination of head and heart, Christophe André shows what creates this weather and how we can change it for the better.'
Rick Hanson, author of Buddha's Brain: The Practical Neuroscience of Happiness, Love, and Wisdom

'Christophe André leads us through a heartfelt encounter with the ubiquity and complexity of emotional life.  Take your time reading his evocative prose and find yourself rewarded with a new appreciation for how thoughts and feelings are foundational in achieving greater satisfaction and purposefulness in your life.'
Zindel Segal, University of Toronto

A unique blending of philosophical and clinical perspectives on emotions.
By K. Salinger, Holistic Nurse Practitioner
This is a very dense book, and not particularly suited to the casual reader unless they have a strong interest in philosophy and/or psychology.

I personally enjoy the book but I've always been 'into' philosophy and I also have a masters in psychology and work in the field. I purchased the book to help with my private practice as well as a psychiatry practice I contract with and I've found it useful and interesting.

For example, on page 44 there is a chart which illustrates the differences between rumination - looking for faults, mistakes and blame while magnifying the problem and focusing on the "why" (a place of judgement), vs. reflection - looking for understanding of the problem and solutions, which focuses on the "what to do now/next" (non-judgmental). While rumination and reflection aren't that hard to explain, breaking it down into multiple facets as the chart does(it has 8 differentials between the two) gives me different ways of discussing the two so that I might find the explanation or point that most resonates with my client. Even in a practice setting where the focus is primarily on medication management, such as the psychiatric practice I contract with, I still try to give tools and guidance to help clients understand how they can self-manage feelings and emotions. This book is a great reference to use for this purpose so that I don't have to re-create the wheel when seeking different ways in which to describe in more depth particular feeling and mood states.

The book has been written by an author who has a solid clinical base in psychiatry, but who is also obviously interested in the "beyond biological". He blends in the philosophical, finding intersects and making connections between the two perspectives and further weaving the two together.

If you're seeking a strong biological or neurochemical perspective in relation to feelings and moods then this is not the text for you. If anything, this book is MOSTLY philosophical (about 80%), but built upon a solid biological/clinical base. The expectation that you already hold the biological/clinical base is inherent in the author's writing and perspectives which makes it more suited to professionals.

Lastly, I will also say that the text size is no different from many of my other medical texts.

Summary: Recommended for mental health professionals, not so much for casual readers unless you have a strong interest or passion for philosophy and/or psychology.

Among best psychology books I've ever read
By Chen Sun
If you are analytical minded and have been accused of not being in touch of your feelings and moods, this is a must need; because, it is an analytical view of feelings and moods processes. Most pop psychology books are somewhat inspirational (e.g., get in touch with your feelings, value of feelings, etc.) and not necessarily objectively observant as to how feelings and moods really progresses. This book defines feelings and moods and describes how they actually operationally progresses, for most people. As such, an analytical reader can develop an "analytical" framework from which to sense his and others' feelings and to begin to assess his own feelings and moods.

Unlike initial reviewer, I didn't find its print font size too small. Seems to be size 8 or 9.

An immensely thoughtful book well supported by social science experiment studies that will take some time to read; a densely written book, where each observation takes only a few paragraphs, but causes me to reflect carefully. This is among the five best psychology books I've ever read and the best I've ever reviewed.

Uses The Science of Psychology And Alternative Approaches For Regulating Mood
By MyBeesWax
I'll begin by telling you what this book is not: It's not a pop psychology book that offers quick fixes. It *is* foremost a "proper" book in psychology (complete with case studies, statistics, and theories in psychology), and secondarily a book that approaches the topic of feelings and moods from "alternative" (such as metaphysical and new age) perspectives. It is refreshingly different from mainstream psychology books in that its tone is philosophical at times and at times pedagogic.

This book offers many fresh perspectives (to me at least). For example, it establishes a link between materialism and mood disturbances and likens materialism to an addiction (such as alcoholism) that temporarily allays our psychological suffering. It is not only heavy in the science of why we feel what we feel, but suggests incorporating alternative ways (such as meditation and prayer) for improving our moods.

This book is NOT light reading. Benefiting from this book involves a somewhat laborious process of interpretation and of sifting through the book for parts that makes sense (or that are pertinent) to you. The feelings and moods examined in this book seem to cover the spectrum of human emotions (such as anxiety, resentment, sadness, despair, to name just a few). A chapter is devoted to each emotion, which is talked about at length. You don't have to read the book in any order, and you can skimp through or omit some parts and still benefit from the book.

I enjoyed this book. Although it took me a while to work my way through it, it was well worth my time. I do highly recommended it for people suffering from depression and anxiety, or for anyone looking to improve their moods.
