Media Sociology: A Reappraisal, by Silvio Waisbord

Where is sociology in contemporary media studies? How do sociological questions and arguments shape media analysis? These are the questions addressed in this timely collection on media sociology.

Sociology was fundamental in defining the analytical boundaries of early media studies, from the study of news and communities to media effects and public opinion, in the first half of the last century. Since then, media sociology has experienced significant changes that have led to new theoretical questions and thematic priorities.

This book aims to reassess the past and present relationship between media studies and sociology. With original contributions from leading scholars, Media Sociology: A Reappraisal examines the significance of sociology for the study of media economics, industries, news, audiences, journalism, and digital technologies, and the links between media and race, gender, and class. As a whole, this much-needed volume takes a retrospective view to trace the evolution of media sociology and assess current research directions.

Review

''It's high time for media sociology to be addressed once more and good to see it done in such a refreshingly questioning way. In this well-edited and valuable collection by a highly competent group of writers, the continuing relevance of sociological thinking for media in the digital age is signalled and some essential terrain marked out afresh.''
Philip Schlesinger, University of Glasgow

''Although sociology and sociological theory lay at the foundation of the study of media, they have been largely displaced by narrow public opinion and psychological approaches. This anthology reestablishes the importance of media sociology, with its focus grounded in the fundamental concepts of structure, institutions, and power. A significant contribution and a good read.''
Robert Horwitz, University of California San Diego

Gender issues continue to be a prominent concern of academics and policy-makers, and increasingly arise in various forms to be debated in the public sphere and popular media. But what exactly do we mean by gender? How can we best understand gender differences? How are current gender relations changing? What new paths are ‘femininity’ and ‘masculinity’ taking? What would it be like to live in a society in which differences of gender were transcended?

In this new edition of her popular and highly lauded book, Harriet Bradley provides an introduction to the concept of gender and the different theoretical approaches which have developed within gender studies. Utilizing life narratives, she investigates processes of gendering in three important spheres of contemporary social life: production, reproduction and consumption. The book highlights the centrality of gender in everyday life and shows how thinking about gender is influenced by changing political contexts. As well as updating the discussion with the latest scholarship, political concerns and economic data, the new edition pays closer attention to intersectionality and hybrid identities, as well as exploring the complexities of contemporary relations of masculinity and femininity in the light of new feminist activities.

This lively and accessible book will be of interest to students across the social sciences, as well as anyone interested in contemporary relations between women and men.

Review

‘This new edition of Gender provides a highly accessible overview of the changing understanding of this powerful social construct. Using a narrative story-telling approach, Harriet Bradley shifts seamlessly between analyses of how gender shapes everyday life and discussions of how it is deployed in various institutions. By weaving together her own experience of gendered processes with the structural practices of consumption, production, and reproduction in local and international contexts, Bradley gives new meaning to “the personal is political”.’
Nancy Naples, University of Connecticut

‘Harriet Bradley has succeeded in producing a unique and extremely engaging introduction to the complex concept of “gender” which will invigorate scholars at all levels. Dispelling any notion that either feminist theory or gender analysis are passé, she deftly interweaves theoretical exegesis, analysis of contemporary social and political issues, and vignettes which illustrate gender as a lived experience.’
Barbara L. Marshall, Trent University, Canada

‘The first edition of Gender has become an indispensable guide to sociological debates in the field. This revised edition is even better. Harriet Bradley turns her clear analytical gaze on the changing nature of gender relations in an era of austerity, seeing both optimistic and pessimistic trends in the emergence of a new politics of gender.’
Linda McDowell, University of Oxford

The idea that respect for cultural diversity conflicts with gender equality is now a staple of both public and academic debate. Yet discussion of these tensions is marred by exaggerated talk of cultural difference, leading to ethnic reductionism, cultural stereotyping, and a hierarchy of traditional and modern. In this volume, Anne Phillips firmly rejects the notion that ‘culture’ might justify the oppression of women, but also queries the stereotypical binaries that have represented people from ethnocultural minorities as peculiarly resistant to gender equality.

The questions addressed include the relationship between universalism and cultural relativism, how to distinguish valid generalisation from either gender or cultural essentialism, and how to recognise women as agents rather than captives of culture. The discussions are illuminated by reference to legal cases and policy interventions, with a particular focus on forced marriage and cultural defence.

"[Phillips] draws attention to a whole new set of questions about the relationship between gender and culture and provides directions for future research in this area."
Political Studies Review

"Anne Phillips's work demonstrates the exhilaration and importance of sustained critique. This insightful work is the latest contribution in her deft and decisive critiques of multiculturalism. It lays out the moral, philosophical and practical grounds at stake in tackling the intractable Gordian knot of gender and culture. It raises all our hopes and forces us to rethink the most settled of positions."

No-one should assume that the choices women make about their lives are forced on them by oppressive and patriarchal cultures, and governments should be wary about leaping prematurely into protective mode. A focus on women's agency can, however, lead to complacency, understating the cultural and other pressures operating on them and the sometimes urgent need for (even paternalistic) protection. The debate on this continues.

A Stranger in My Own Country: The 1944 Prison Diary, by Hans Fallada

“I lived the same life as everyone else, the life of ordinary people, the masses.” Sitting in a prison cell in the autumn of 1944, the German author Hans Fallada sums up his life under the National Socialist dictatorship, the time of “inward emigration”. Under conditions of close confinement, in constant fear of discovery, he writes himself free from the nightmare of the Nazi years. He records his thoughts about spying and denunciation, about the threat to his livelihood and his literary work and about the fate of many friends and contemporaries. The confessional mode did not come naturally to Fallada, but in the mental and emotional distress of 1944, self-reflection became a survival strategy.

Fallada’s frank and sometimes provocative memoirs were thought for many years to have been lost. They are published here for the first time.

Review

"This is certainly a revelatory book. As its author intended, it reveals much about the pernicious nature of Nazi rule during the Third Reich; the compromises demanded, the tribulations endured, the lives ruined. At one point Fallada laments: “Oh, how they bled us dry! How they robbed us of every joy and happiness, every smile, every friendship! Yet it also reveals something that its author did not intend, and that is Fallada’s own deeply flawed character."
The Financial Times

"An outspoken memoir of life under the Nazis written from a prison cell... a fascinating document"
The Independent

"Exquisite and troubling... one of the most powerful accounts of life in the Third Reich."
The Economist

"This is a remarkable book"
The Scotsman

""Colourful and anecdotal reflections of life under Hitler. Fallada's diary turns out to be not a record of quotidian events inside but reminiscences of scrapes, challenges and day-to-day reality outside, from the advent of Nazi misrule to the final stages of the war."
The Sunday Herald

"Fallada, one of Germany's most well-regarded writers of the 20th century, tells the tale of a writer and his friends, and how the swell of Nazism means there's always a listening ear outside the door - except this time he's telling his own story"
South China Morning Post

"A Stranger in My Own Country is an engrossing book that reads more like a novel than a memoir.”
Nomadic Press

"His prison diary is a heartfelt diatribe against the nazis, revealing a highly compromised man riddled with contradictions and ambiguity. In reading it, the high price Fallada paid for living out the war in his homeland is all too clear."
Morning Star

Sydney Morning Herald

“Fallada’s strength as a diarist is to convert his unsteady, sometimes ethically questionable existence into disciplined, objective narrative. His life and writings reflect the endless need to challenge authoritarianism in both family and society.”
The Tablet

"This long-awaited publication will... greatly increase our knowledge of an author whose reputation has never been completely eclipsed in Germany, and who is now being rediscovered in Britain, the USA, France, and Italy. All these countries have recently published his last, posthumously published novel [Alone in Berlin], thus demonstrating his rare ability to attract the common and the literary reader alike."
Modern Language Review

"Recording his experiences of Nazi Germany while confined in an asylum in 1944, Hans Fallada wrote in real life what Günter Grass later wrote in fiction. An intriguing literary testament, expertly edited by two leading Fallada scholars, and skilfully translated by Allan Blunden."
Geoff Wilkes, The University of Queensland

‘Fallada’s strengths as a novelist permeate his narrative. He is a master of the brief character sketch, bringing friend and foe to life on the page with economy and wit.’
The Australian

‘This wonderful volume, painstakingly transcribed from his microscopic handwriting by his gifted biographer, Jenny Williams, and her fellow Fallada scholar and archivist, the poet Sabine Lange, is a conversational memoir: blunt, whimsical, outrageous, anecdotal and often hilarious. Allan Blunden’s translation conveys the exasperated humour.’
Irish Times

‘An absorbing evocation of a troubled, all-too-human life under an inhuman tyranny.’
Times Literary Supplement

"We really were very stupid..."
By S. McGee
Novelist Hans Fallada wrote what may have been one of the best (and most chilling books) about everyday life and ordinary resistance to the Nazi regime in Every Man Dies Alone, published weeks after his death in early 1947 but only recently translated into English. I finally read that a few months before being offered the opportunity to read this journal, a chronicle of his own experiences in the Third Reich that Fallada penned at great risk to his own life while incarcerated in a psychiatric facility in the autumn of 1944, and so leaped at the chance to understand how his own life may have informed that remarkable novel.

What I found in this is an equally remarkable work, albeit of a very, very different order. In the same way that "Hans Fallada" was a pseudonym for that Wilhelm Dietz adopted when he began writing, so this sheds light on the experiences of an 'ordinary German' between 1933 and 1945 in the same way that the novel does, but in a radically unfiltered way. The editors have chosen to give readers the original 1944 text -- written in tiny handwriting on the small quantity of paper provided to Fallada by his doctors/guardians, producing a "calligraphic conundrum" -- rather than an edited typescript Fallada produced in 1945, revised and revisited in light of the Nazi defeat, which gave him the chance to explain and expand on some of his statements and defend some of his views. (The excellent end notes and postcript clarify many of these alterations.) What is left is nonetheless astonishing. Under the eyes of a medical establishment, someone known to be opposed to the regime scribbles about his experiences, his disdain for the Nazis oozing from his pen on every page. "The relative subtlety of the iron fist in the velvet glove is too sophisticated for them," he sneers; "what a dung heap they have turned Germany into." The Nazis, he writes, are a "group of hysterics, psycopaths, monomaniacs and sadists". Fallada, who was confined to the sanatorium after firing a pistol in a dispute with his ex-wife (both testified he wasn't aiming it at her), might not have been nuts when one considers the "crime" for which he was sent to the institution in the first place, but reading this, one has to question his sanity at putting it all down on paper, even though all were aware that Germany was losing the war. Fallada himself occasionally pauses in his chronicle to consider the risks, and admits as much -- and then goes right back to writing.

None of which makes Fallada an appealing or even heroic figure, as the diaries reveal. A genius as a writer? Quite possibly, especially when one considers how he was able to turn out such amazing novels in short periods of time. But he specialized in carrying chips on his shoulder -- indeed, some of his objection to the Nazis emerges as being due to their vulgarity and lack of education, and more of it to their offenses against him, personally, rather than to any higher and more abstract ideals. He delves into quarrels with local figures where he lived, and with literary figures. While these sometimes feel like whining, though, they ended up giving me a good sense both of Fallada (how difficult it must have been to work with someone who probably was charming when he felt like it and then incredibly frustrating much of the rest of the time) as well as of society at the time. How hard was it for someone like Fallada to understand the real motivations or actions of some of his colleagues, who were camouflaging their own actions to protect themselves and others? In other instances, his petty squabbles with local schoolmasters and mayors show vividly just how corrupt the Nazi regime rendered German life in the tiniest matters, on a day to day basis.

It's not possible to emerge from this revering Fallada, but his attitudes probably reflect those of many Germans who despised the Nazis but remained patriotic. Fallada had little more love for those who chose to emigrate and judge his actions from afar (he couldn't understand why his publisher would have returned from self-imposed exile in Brazil to volunteer to serve in the military, even running a minefield to do so, but admired him for his decision). He chose "internal emigration" -- and so what? "We didn't do anything so preposterous as to hatch conspiracies or plot coups, which is what people in other countries always expected of us," he writes. And why should they have, he argues, since "we were not intent on committing suicide when our death would be of no use to anyone."

Of course, the third rail here is the question of the Holocaust, and the manuscript and its revisions betray Fallada's own ambivalence on this regard. He prefers to see himself as "philo-Semitic", yet clearly is aware of who is Jewish and who is not, merrily ascribing racial traits to individuals. He writes of the canard that all Jews love money, noting that he saw one Jewish scientist return to Nazi Germany to work on a scientific project, "dining off roast goose at th expense of the German Reich"; another woman refused to leave the country because it meant abandoning a tiny pension. "What I discovered was that Jews have a different attitude to money than I do, and it was an attitude that I didn't care for personally, in fact one that I found quite repugnant," he extrapolates, wildly. On the other hand, his rage at the treatment of Jewish friends and former colleagues leaks through onto the page, and his 1945 revisions to the text show that he has come to understand why they made common cause with each other, excluding even their "truest friend of non-Jewish blood" in favor of co-religionists whom Fallada considered to be fools. "The dangers that constantly threatened the Jews did not affect us," he writes, sadly.

This is a novel that sheds light on the literary landscape of an era and its personalities. Fallada's concerns sometimes are petty, from firewood to gossip, and only occasionally more lofty -- but that is the nature of the kind of daily life that he is chronicling. The mere fact that he put pen to paper many months before the Nazi regime fell was an act of courage.

My sole concern about this elegantly translated and impeccably edited book is that anyone reading it who hasn't yet Every Man Dies Alone or other of Fallada's novels, might be deterred from doing so. Read those novels first, and then come back to this to provide you with a backdrop to that book. It helped me understand some of Fallada's inspiration for what is one of his masterpieces, and serves as an odd kind of counterpoint to other chronicles of daily life in Nazi Germany penned by the likes of William Shirer (the CBS correspondent; up until the point he was expelled from the country) and the very, very different experiences of his fellow German, Victor Klemperer, who chronicled life as a Jew in Hitler's Germany right up until 1945.

Highly recommended; with kudos to the publisher for undertaking the translation and publication.

Emotional and Interesting Reflections
By JD Cetola
Hans Fallada (pseudonym for Rudolf Wilhelm Friedrich Ditzen) authored many excellent and best selling novels during the rise of Nazi Germany including "The Drinker", "Little Man, What Now?", and the posthumous (and fantastic) "Every Man Dies Alone". "A Stranger in My Own Country" is labeled as 'The 1944 Prison Diary', but is more a reflection of his life and several incarcerations as he remained in Germany during the National Socialist dictatorship of Hitler from 1933 through his imprisonment in a "mental institution" from September through mid-December of 1944.

Fallada was not Jewish, but he was no fan of Nazis and his various publications were favorably received by much of the public, but not the government and he was variously considered an "undesirable author" and often under watch or suspicion. Unlike many similarly considered artists of the time, Fallada chose to remain in Germany rather than emigrate elsewhere. This resulted in multiple nervous breakdowns and bouts of depression as well as several stays in institutions (or "protective custody"). The entries in this diary were written in shorthand in order to protect his writings and conserve the limited paper he was granted as were the stories and novel ("The Drinker") he wrote during this time. The reflections paint an interesting look at the progression of Nazism during the 1930s and the cost to those who remained behind. Fallada's writing is powerful, moving, and remarkably insightful, particularly given the circumstances under which they were written. Although not as cohesive or as strong and emotive as his novels, the entries in this book are well worth reading for historical context and provide insight into one of the 20th century's best writer's mindset and life. Also included are a timeline of Fallada's life and many footnotes for his entries, many of which add to the historical context of his reflections.

Interesting view of Hans Fallada's experiences
By maven
An interesting view of Hans Fallada's experiences in Nazi Germany, including how he was considered an "undesirable writer" by the Nazis, faced a great deal of trouble from this and minor scuffles with Party members, and how his work was affected over the years.

That said, this book would probably only be of interest to someone who has read at least some of Fallada's work, and is curious about him as a person as well as a writer. It gives a glimpse into how he crafted his stories and characters, sometimes borrowing from real life. But it also shows the fallibility of human memory and what motivates us, as the editors note the inaccuracies and adjustments Fallada made as he wrote and later edited this diary.

Disagreement (Key Concepts in Philosophy), by Bryan Frances

Regardless of who you are or how you live your life, you disagree with millions of people on an enormous number of topics from politics, religion and morality to sport, culture and art. Unless you are delusional, you are aware that a great many of the people who disagree with you are just as smart and thoughtful as you are - in fact, you know that often they are smarter and more informed. But believing someone to be cleverer or more knowledgeable about a particular topic usually won’t change your mind. Should it?

This book is devoted to exploring this quandary - what should we do when we encounter disagreement, particularly when we believe someone is more of an authority on a subject than we are? The question is of enormous importance, both in the public arena and in our personal lives. Disagreement over marriages, beliefs, friendships and more causes immense personal strife. People with political power disagree about how to spend enormous amounts of money, about what laws to pass, or about wars to fight. If only we were better able to resolve our disagreements, we would probably save millions of lives and prevent millions of others from living in poverty.

The first full-length text-book on this philosophical topic, Disagreement provides students with the tools they need to understand the burgeoning academic literature and its (often conflicting) perspectives. Including case studies, sample questions and chapter summaries, this engaging and accessible book is the perfect starting point for students and anyone interested in thinking about the possibilities and problems of this fundamental philosophical debate.

"Frances's commitment to working with realistic examples makes for a kind of contact with everyday intellectual life that can seem missing in much of the professional literature on disagreement. Although the book is designed for students, it also gave me new things to think about."

Humanitarian Intervention, by Thomas G. Weiss

A singular development of the post Cold-War era is the use of military force to protect human beings. From Rwanda to Kosovo, Sierra Leone to East Timor, and more recently Libya to Côte d'Ivoire, soldiers have rescued some civilians in some of the world's most notorious war zones. Could more be saved? Drawing on over two decades of research, Thomas G. Weiss answers "yes" and provides a persuasive introduction to the theory and practice of humanitarian intervention in the modern world. He examines political, ethical, legal, strategic, economic, and operational dimensions and uses a wide range of cases to highlight key debates and controversies.

The updated and expanded second edition of this succinct and highly accessible survey is neither celebratory nor complacent. The author locates the normative evolution of what is increasingly known as "the responsibility to protect" in the context of the global war on terror, UN debates, and such international actions as Libya. The result is an engaging exploration of the current dilemmas and future challenges for robust international humanitarian action in the twenty-first century.

Review
"In Humanitarian Intervention: Ideas in Action, Tom Weiss again demonstrates his unique talent for bringing conceptual clarity and rigorous analysis to pressing and messy real-world dilemmas. Protecting endangered people abroad raises thorny issues - politically, practically, and ethically. In this engaging book, Weiss offers a conceptual guide to understanding these dilemmas, and his application of these concepts to contemporary humanitarian emergencies will be useful to both scholars and practitioners alike. This is an essential book for anyone interested in humanitarian action."
Martha Finnemore, George Washington University

"Few observers have written more, or more persuasively, than Professor Weiss, and this is his best work to date. A sensible, thorough and realistic treatment."
Fernando R. Tesóon, Florida State University College of Law

The Ethics, Impulse, and Legitimacy of Providing Intervention Based on Humanitarian Principles
By Erika Borsos
In "Humanitarian Intervention: Ideas in Action" Dr. Thomas G. Weiss outlines and discusses his principle of "the responsibility to protect" often referred to as "R2P" which originated from the International Commission on Intervention and State Sovereignty." We learn the ICISS was originally established by the Security Council of the United Nations due to their failure to address the shocking events which transpired in Rwanda and Kosovo. As with all interventions there is there are multiple considerations and the risk that intervention will result in "unintended consequences". The author does an outstanding job in discussing recent interventions and their outcomes both intended and unintended. He covers the ethical issues and moral dilemmas faced by those who participate with interventions either military, humanitarian or both. It has been shown that humanitarian aide was a secondary consideration to the geopolitical considerations for action taken during the Iraqi War. It has also been shown that the US has not demonstrated great success at assisting in economic recovery, nation-building and halting internal dissent that results in violence by opposing factions in the new nation. In the past 30 plus years evidence has accumulated from Rawanda, the Balkan War of the 1990s, Dar Fur and Sri Lanka that lack of intervention or poorly conceived intervention results in avertable human sufferring and deaths.

This book discusses what if any limits are to be placed on a state/country regarding its freedom to act regarding internal matters which would constitute either a threat to its neighboring state, world wide security or the threat or actual genocide of populations within its borders. The big debate revolves around when there is military intervention from outside agencies, to what extent does humanitarian aide continue once the major emergency is controlled. Certain countries/states are incapable of protecting their population and territories once the major threat is averted, nor are they capable of building a sustainable economy. Helping and protecting vulnerable people is the goal and great strides have been made by the United Nations in recognizing and accepting guiding principles of when military intervention is permitted, when humanitarian aide as an intervention is required, and the need to protect human rights within all countries. The author provides questions which are still up for debate, such as, "What exactly is the meaning of a collective security organization in a world so dominated by US power?" He follows this thought up with the counter idea, that "the strongest member exerts natural leadership within a confederation - for example, it is an analytical focus of political scientists who see 'hegemonic stability' as a necessary and desirable element in international political economy." This is a most excellent and valuable book treated in a scholarly manner but written so that it is understandable to the average reader. Erika Borsos [pepper flower]

Terse introduction to the ethics and political pressures involving humanitarian interventions
By Michael A. Duvernois
This looks like a potential text for a political science class investigation into humanitarian interventions, their uses, failures, political consequences, and ethics. The book is framed with the post-cold war idea of foreign interventions not as part of a global us vs. them, but as a reflection of deeply held ethical standards. It's a complicated political issue, witness the US failures in Somalia, the success, but reluctance to act, in Libya, and our current inability to act in Syria. The book covers the case histories without a lot of detail, but the references are readily available...

The case for Humanitarian Intervention
By Bror Erickson
This book is really an overview concerning the topic of Humanitarian Intervention post cold war, the reason for it, and the hows and why's concerning it.
I thought it would be an interesting book because I'm generally in favor of humanitarian intervention, and was involved in it during the mid 90s. My biggest problem is explaining the case for it to friends and family.
It must be said though, the book is dry. It really doesn't pick up until the third chapter, and you have to be pretty dedicated to get there.
The interesting aspects of this book is that it dissects the arguments against humanitarian intervention, and also explains the hurdles that often need to be succumbed. It offers some insight into some of the more atrocious events of the post cold war era, and also explains why and how it is that humanitarian intervention became popular in the wake of the cold war. And how refusal to protect civilians or treat the humanely removes a nations right to sovereignty.
Explaining that food stuffs often get siphoned off to feed military personnel because the humanitarians have to bribe the warlords into giving the access to the civilian population that needs it most. The numbers showing the rise of civilian casualties in percentage since WWII was also startling, but then quite believable. I suppose it is the old adage that when Elephants fight the grass gets trampled.
The author ends incorporating the intervention in Libya, citing it as a good warning to others that finally "no more Holocausts" does at least have meaning some of the time.

Strategy: Key Thinkers, by Tom Kane

Over twenty two centuries ago, the Greek general Pyrrhus questioned the real gains of military victory. Today we might reflect on the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in much the same way. War is not only cruel but capricious; its outcomes are often bitter and frustrating, even for the winning side.

Strategy: Key Thinkers expertly introduces the ideas of major strategic thinkers whose work explores the complex challenges associated with the use of military force. Early chapters deal with the foundational work of Sun Tzu (Sunzi), Thucydides, Vegetius, Machiavelli and Carl von Clausewitz and their relevance to problems facing Western militaries today. The book then considers broader issues, such as the distinctive importance of air and maritime operations, the difficulty of waging offensive land warfare in the face of modern firepower, the implications of nuclear weapons, and the potential of irregular warfare. It concludes by highlighting key themes which connect - and distinguish - the works under consideration, noting how these similarities and differences can inform the strategic debates of the early twenty-first century.

Violence and Punishment: Civilizing the Body Through Time, by Pieter Spierenburg

This innovative book tells the fascinating tale of the long histories of violence, punishment, and the human body, and how they are all connected. Taking the decline of violence and the transformation of punishment as its guiding themes, the book highlights key dynamics of historical and social change, and charts how a refinement and civilizing of manners, and new forms of celebration and festival, accompanied the decline of violence.

Pieter Spierenburg, a leading figure in historical criminology, skillfully extends his view over three continents, back to the middle ages and even beyond to the Stone Age. Ranging along the way from murder to etiquette, from social control to popular culture, from religion to death, and from honor to prisons, every chapter creatively uses the theories of Norbert Elias, while also engaging with the work of Foucault and Durkheim.

The scope and rigor of the analysis will strongly interest scholars of criminology, history, and sociology, while the accessible style and the intriguing stories on which the book builds will appeal to anyone interested in the history of violence and punishment in civilization.

Essential to studying the history of violence
By Jairo Antonio Melo Flórez
Pieter Spierenburg is maybe the most known scholar that research the history of violent crime in western societies. Without the overrated ambition of Steven Pinker and his "Better Angels...", Spierenburg do in this book a compilation of his previous works with the major topic of Violence and Punishment within Civilizing Processes. This is a notable validation of Elias theory related to violence in three themes: violence, punishment and social control, and civilizing the body.

This is an indispensable book for all the researchers of violence and violent crime, but also is a great book to all the people interested in how violence has evolved through time and how we can be a most peaceful society.

Second Manifesto for Philosophy, by Alain Badiou

Twenty years ago, Alain Badiou's first Manifesto for Philosophy rose up against the all-pervasive proclamation of the "end" of philosophy. In lieu of this problematic of the end, he put forward the watchword: "one more step".

The situation has considerably changed since then. Philosophy was threatened with obliteration at the time, whereas today it finds itself under threat for the diametrically opposed reason: it is endowed with an excessive, artificial existence. "Philosophy" is everywhere. It serves as a trademark for various media pundits. It livens up cafés and health clubs. It has its magazines and its gurus. It is universally called upon, by everything from banks to major state commissions, to pronounce on ethics, law and duty. In essence, "philosophy" has now come to stand for nothing other than its most ancient enemy: conservative ethics.

Badiou's second manifesto therefore seeks to demoralize philosophy and to separate it from all those "philosophies" that are as servile as they are ubiquitous. It demonstrates the power of certain eternal truths to illuminate action and, as such, to transport philosophy far beyond the figure of "the human" and its "rights". There, well beyond all moralism, in the clear expanse of the idea, life becomes something radically other than survival.

Review
Badiou remains perhaps the most important philosopher at work in France today. Highly recommended."
Choice

"With his characteristic taste for polemic, economy of expression and relentless cheerfulness, Badiou offers a loud counterblast against contemporary scientism and sophism. Against what he sees as the democratic materialism of the age, Badiou pits a materialist dialectic at the service of the Idea. The second manifesto is invigorating reading."
Simon Critchley, New School for Social Research

"Badiou's Second Manifesto for Philosophy makes a lucid and compelling demand for philosophy to return from media distraction to its genuine calling. Opposing all moralizing acquiescence in an intolerable global status quo, Badiou reminds us that philosophical thought is, in essence, a quest for universality. The thinker's task is to make sense of truths whose upsurge and impact cuts across space and time. In this sense, far from toying with relativism, the philosopher must be committed to the disciplined work of soldering together separated worlds."
Peter Dews, University of Essex

Definitely a Essential Companion to Being and Event as a whole system
By William D Watkin
Increasingly there has to be a movement away from just understanding Badiou's ontology to simultaneously understanding his logic and coming to terms with the fundamental problem of their non-relation and how this schism is overleapt, or not, by the formation of subjects due to fidelity to events named retrospectively. This is a big ask to say the least. Now that we English speakers have had Logics of Worlds long enough to come to terms with its incredible innovations in relation of phenomenology without the aporia of consciousness, we need to really hold Badiou to task as regards the problem of non-relation in the area of the articulation of ontology and logic. The recent translation of Theory of the Subject makes it transparent that this articulation was always there at the origins of the program and one of the duties of the second manifesto is to tackle this question head on.

Three issues are presented at the end of the book. The first that 'while the essence of a generic multiplicity is a negative universality (the absence of any predicative identity) the essence of a body of truth resides in certain capacities..." The second is the clear distinction between the first manifesto's 'separatist doctrine of being' and the second's 'integrative doctrine of doing'. While the third attests that 'What interests me is that a truth is produced with particular materials in a specific world, yet, at the same time, since it is understood and usable in an entirely different world and across potentially vast spans of time...it has, well and truly, to be trans-temporal'

From this we can take the following clarification as regards the (non) relation between Being and Event and Logics of Worlds. First that multiplicities are defined by their indifference in respect of the 'real' difference of bodies in the world. Second that because ontology is concerned with separation and logic with relation, the (non) relation between the two works has a self-predicative feel to it that is reminiscent of Kant. (How can you describe their differential relation when one is about separation and the other integration?) Third is the very real mystery of how an immanent and specific, differentiated and quality possessive body of truth in an actual world, can bear indifferent and transtemporal universal, by which we mean, generic truth.

What is clear to my mind is that indifference is the central term in Badiou's work. It is Logic of Worlds total inability to address the indifference of ontology and the event that leaves it feeling insufficient. In that the second manifesto talks a lot about indifference this problem is addressed, but in that these issues pertain to ontology it is certainly not solved.

Why read this book? Well, Badiou along with Agamben and Laruelle will dictate the future of how we think in the new century. In that Being and Event had a manifesto attached and an explanation of the maths, now Logics of World, with the publication of the new book on transcendence and mathematics, has the same. Logics of worlds is brilliantly clarified in this little version but more than that many issues pertaining to the totality of the project are raised here in ways they are not considered elsewhere. If the book is not essential in the way the big three are, it is certainly still essential. It works brilliantly as a clarification of Logics of Worlds. It is great also for teaching and for finding quotes that you can use. Finally, it is an original piece of work as I hope I have shown, in terms of how the two parts of Badiou's work need to be thought together through the centrality of the conversion of ontological indifference (void, multiplicities, generic, event) into logical identity in difference.
