Pieter Spierenburg is maybe the most known scholar that research the history of violent crime in western societies. Without the overrated ambition of Steven Pinker and his "Better Angels...", Spierenburg do in this book a compilation of his previous works with the major topic of Violence and Punishment within Civilizing Processes. This is a notable validation of Elias theory related to violence in three themes: violence, punishment and social control, and civilizing the body.
This is an indispensable book for all the researchers of violence and violent crime, but also is a great book to all the people interested in how violence has evolved through time and how we can be a most peaceful society.
