Rawls: An Introduction, by Sebastiano Maffettone

Rawls: An Introduction is a uniquely comprehensive introduction to the work of the American philosopher John Rawls (1921-2002), who transformed contemporary political philosophy. In the 1950s and 1960s, political philosophy seemed to have reached a dead end characterized by a loose predominance of utilitarian theses. Rawls’s
conception of liberalism placed civil liberties and social justice at its core, and his extraordinary influence has only been confirmed by the extent of the criticism he has provoked.

The book is divided into three parts which correspond to Rawls’s three major books. The first concentrates on A Theory of Justice (1971) and examines the way in which Rawls’s general vision of social justice is presented. Maffettone also includes here a discussion of some of the most important critiques of Rawls. The second part of the book highlights Political Liberalism (1993-6), with a chapter dedicated to the “passage” from Theory of Justice to Political Liberalism. Finally, the third part provides a discussion of The Law of Peoples (1999).

This work is acomprehensive examination of these three major texts by a renowned Rawls scholar and will appeal to all philosophers and social scientists for whom it is essential to understand the key theories of this most influential of political philosophers.

Review
"Extremely useful for graduate students and faculty in political philosophy and political sceince looking for an in-depth and wide-ranging discussion of Rawls's views and debates about Rawls's work. Highly recommended."
Choice

"This introduction to Rawls is the product of good, old-fashioned, and dedicated scholarship, combined with careful didactic talent. Maffettone succeeds in offering an encompassing and coherent picture of Rawls's political philosophy. [But] this work is much more than a mere introduction. Students in political philosophy will find it deserves to be read together with the original and vice versa."
Ethical Perspectives

"A meticulous, comprehensive overview of the entirety of Rawls' corpus, that presents an important reading of Rawls which provides a response to many critiques."
Political Studies Review

"An excellent survey of the features and evolution of Rawls’s conception of justice as fairness."
Review of Politics

"An educational read that presents it all well and leaves readers with what they need to know to pursue deeper learning. Rawls is an excellent addition to any community and college library collection."
Library Bookwatch

"Achieving a graceful balance of accessibility and rigor, Maffettone's insightful and substantial study expounds Rawls's thought as unified by the priority of the right over the good and offers a sober critical appraisal of it and its intellectual opponents."
Thomas W. Pogge, Yale University

"John Rawls was the leading political philosopher of the past century. In this illuminating book, Sebastiano Maffettone gives us a complete, coherent, and compelling picture of Rawls's leading ideas: his liberal-egalitarian theory of justice, his ideas about legitimacy in a pluralistic democracy, and his account of the moral basis of global politics. Maffettone understands that the focus of Rawls's work shifted, but he sees the deeper continuities in Rawls's emphasis on the priority of the right and his distinction between the justice of a society and its capacity to elicit the willing support of its members. The book casts a powerful light on Rawls's work, both clarifying his ideas and explaining their plausibility."
Joshua Cohen, Stanford University

"This is for its size the best introduction to all of Rawls's major works available. It is also a significant work of scholarship in its own right, with an especially strong emphasis on the continuity of Rawls's thought. Maffettone's acumen, expertise and dedication to his subject are in evidence on every page."
Leif Wenar, King's College London

"A rich and insightful work, which will make a substantial contribution to the secondary literature on Rawls. The author is able to draw upon both his own extensive knowledge of the Rawls corpus and his personal interaction with Rawls himself in order to present a systematic overview of his political theory."
Daniel Butt, University of Bristol

Moscow, 1937, by Karl Schlögel

Moscow, 1937: the soviet metropolis at the zenith of Stalin’s dictatorship. A society utterly wrecked by a hurricane of violence.

In this compelling book, the renowned historian Karl Schlögel reconstructs with meticulous care the process through which, month by month, the terrorism of a state-of-emergency regime spiraled into the ‘Great Terror’ during which 1 ½ million human beings lost their lives within a single year. He revisits the sites of show trials and executions and, by also consulting numerous sources from the time, he provides a masterful panorama of these key events in Russian history.

He shows how, in the shadow of the reign of terror, the regime around Stalin also aimed to construct a new society. Based on countless documents, Schlögel’s historical masterpiece vividly presents an age in which the boundaries separating the dream and the terror dissolve, and enables us to experience the fear that was felt by people subjected to totalitarian rule. This rich and absorbing account of the Soviet purges will be essential reading for all students of Russia and for any readers interested in one of the most dramatic and disturbing events of modern history.

Review
Winner of the Leipzig Book Prize for European Understanding

"An almost impossibly rich masterpiece. The density and seriousness, the deliberation and literary art of this exhilarating tour de force testifies to the enduring value and purpose of that perhaps now-vanishing triumph of the human intellect, the book."
The Atlantic, best five books of 2012

"A dizzyingly brilliant panorama of the enormous variety of events and processes unfolding in Moscow between 1936 and 1938. Schlogel succeeds admirably - indeed, better than any historian to date - in reproducing the atmosphere and grotesque contradictions."
Times Higher Education

"Exceptionally readable. An extraordinary, thought-provoking masterpiece."
Literary Review

“An excellent and original book. Not only is it a highly detailed account of a city in turmoil (containing many more fascinating stories than a review can ever do full justice), but it reveals clearly how 1937 was a year of extreme contradictions”
Europe/Asia Studies

"Schlögel's total history of Moscow during the fateful year ranks among the best of Sovietology."
International Affairs

"No book could be more equal to the task of restoring Stalin’s victims to Western memory than Schlögel’s Moscow, 1937 - it is an extraordinary work of scholarship, prose and remembrance."
Times Literary Supplement

"“A brilliant achievement of historical writing, one that can be read profitably by specialist and the general reader alike.”
American Historical Review

"Schlogel's comprehensive overview gives a profound overall view of what it was like to live in such a crucial place in such a crucial year."
Dublin Review of Books

"It is great. Moscow, 1937 teaches us that life goes on as usual, even in the midst of great catastrophe, but it also teaches that great catastrophe can look a lot like life going on as usual."
Vol. 1 Brooklyn

"Compelling in every way, the book startles the mind and stirs the imagination in the way that only poetry and music can sometimes do. An instant classic."
Wichita Eagle

"Karl Schlögel’s Moscow 1937 draws a living, multi-dimensional portrait of the megacity in a crucial year of upheaval that evokes all the hope, despair, creativity, horror, escapism, terror, fear, and striving that enveloped the Muscovite cityscape and its inhabitants. Schlögel is an unusually inventive historian and a brilliant stylist; it’s a great boon to have his latest work available in English."
Norman M. Naimark, Stanford University and author of Stalin’s Genocides

"This book’s focus is one year, 1937, and one place, Moscow, but it is no narrow history. The narrative has sweep and depth, encompassing the mundane, the spectacular, and the nightmare dream world of Stalin’s purges; an incomparable book about people during one of the most grandiose and terrifying epochs of the twentieth century."
David Shearer, University of Delaware

"Starting from a birds-eye view of the city from above, a homage to the flight of Bulgakov’s Margarita, Schloegel captures the complex specificity of a time and place of immense significance in Soviet and twentieth-century history. In this multivalent historical moment, interrogations at the Lubyanka coexist with happy summer vacations and the triumphant conquest of the North Pole by Soviet aviators.  Schloegel brings into play an ingenious variety of sources, ranging from architectural blueprints and city directories to execution records, not forgetting diaries and literary evocations. This is a masterful, panoramic work by a gifted story-teller who is also a highly innovative, sophisticated and erudite historian."
Sheila Fitzpatrick, University of Chicago

"In brilliant fashion Karl Schlögel presents Moscow as a rotating stage of Soviet desire and Stalinist nightmares. Like no other author before him, he charges his prose and the sequence of scenes with the hallucinatory power of the Communist project. The vertiginous and terrifying effect is his very point and singular achievement."
Jochen Hellbeck, Rutgers University

"Karl Schlogel's Moscow 1937 is a brilliant essay of "Total history" on  a crucial episode of Soviet history, on one of the greatest historical catastrophes of the Twentieth Century. This is the first book which goes beyond totalitarianism and revisionism and  brings us a totally new interpretation of this tragic  event  by  presenting together  opposing experiences and manifestations such as the preparation for universal, free, direct and secret elections and carefully planned, organized mass killings. Or, in other words, Dream and Terror."
Nicolas Werth, Institut d’histoire du temps présent

"This is a montage of a great city in tumult, in equal parts depicting the optimism of progress and the horror of the show trials, all in the shadow of a looming war."
Andrew Cornish, Readings

"While most historians see both terror and civilisation as important to understanding the Soviet experience of the 1930s, they tend to spend their time investigating either one or the other. Schlögel is the first to attempt to knit them together so intricately. Moscow 1937 is an act of remembrance as well as a work of history.”
London Review of Books

"There is no book that so perfectly and completely captures the stark contradictions of Soviet life. Each scene is a marvel, and together they recreate for us a multisided and vanished world."
Wendy Goldman, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA

Behind the Illusion of Grandeur a Terrible Reality
By Ian Gordon Malcomson
"While the records and triumphs were being celebrated, the murder machinery was running at full throttle." Schlogel, "Moscow 1937"

This award-winning monograph takes its readers inside the USSR's national capital, Moscow, for a year to determine how its citizens handled and survived one of the most nerve-wracking and perilous times in Russian history: the Great Terror of 1937. What Professor Schlogel's detailed research shows is that Stalin's regime made every effort to cover this great city in a cloak of political normalcy, cultural celebration, and economic prosperity while it and the nation were suffering through a ruthless program of state terror of unimaginable magnitude. This book is loaded with facts that show how this regime, in effect, fooled much of the outside world by using various propaganda tools to create an air of respectability when nothing could be further from the truth. Everything is up for discussion and in this fascinating account of a great nation falling into the hands of tyrants bent on orchestrating events and people's lives in order to rewrite history. This total make-over involved every aspect of Russian life from the performing arts to technology to architecture to international exploration to consumer prices to megaprojects to national celebrations became propaganda tools that Stalin and his henchmen wielded in an effort to impress the world that their brand of communism in one country actually worked. What makes Schlogel's work so monumental is the attention he pays to the names of the many good Russian intellectuals, politicians, artists, scientists, and workers who were murdered by the state because of one man's extreme paranoia that they stood in the way of his despotic dream to make Russia a world power. Above all else, I learned an incredible amount about how this great European metropolis, with its warren of streets and districts, played a key role in showcasing an external fantasy embracing national greatness while hiding a fiendish reality of widespread murder and carnage.

Good Info; Dry Read
By Cody Carlson
Karl Schlogel's new work, "Moscow, 1937" contains a warehouse of data on the fateful year of the Soviet Union. The author brilliantly explores topics such as the film making industry in the Soviet Union, architecture, and other artistic topics. He details the plight of the Soviet worker, and the grim world of those who left the USSR, only to return and face death. The horrors of the show trials are on display, as are the excesses and death of the four-year-plan. Throughout this work, German author Schlogel demonstrates the gifts of a true scholar, particularly when he begins by juxtaposing Moscow in 1937 with the Mikhail Bulgakov's novel "The Master and Margarita."

Unfortunately, this is a very, very dry read. Whether that is due to the author or the English translation, who can tell? The fact of the matter is that this is a book for academics, or those prepared to really commit themselves to the time it takes to work through it. For the casual reader of history, there are other books that cover many of the same topics, but do so in a more reader-friendly fashion (i.e. "Stalin" by Robert Service, "The Great Terror" by Robert Conquest, "Lenin, Stalin, & Hitler" by Robert Gellately," etc...

Red Capital
By Christian Schlect
This book should be read by all who want to better understand the USSR and, specifically, its capital city, Moscow. The revolution's anniversary year of 1937 provides the focal point for this brilliant and clear description of the society wrought by the top cadres of the Red Party. It is an account based on excellent scholarship, both broad and deep.

The show trials, the murderous purges are here; but also the day by day life circa 1937 in the arts, construction, urban planning, leisure activities, transportation, consumer shopping, and so forth.

Professor Karl Schlogel of Germany should win prizes for this troubling history of a benighted time. So many innocents died, so many died.

Posthumanism, by Pramod K. Nayar

This timely book examines the rise of posthumanism as both a material condition and a developing philosophical-ethical project in the age of cloning, gene engineering, organ transplants and implants.

Nayar first maps the political and philosophical critiques of traditional humanism, revealing its exclusionary and ‘speciesist’ politics that position the human as a distinctive and dominant life form. He then contextualizes the posthumanist vision which, drawing upon biomedical, engineering and techno-scientific studies, concludes that human consciousness is shaped by its co-evolution with other life forms, and our human form inescapably influenced by tools and technology. Finally the book explores posthumanism’s roots in disability studies, animal studies and bioethics to underscore the constructed nature of ‘normalcy’ in bodies, and the singularity of species and life itself.

As this book powerfully demonstrates, posthumanism marks a radical reassessment of the human as constituted by symbiosis, assimilation, difference and dependence upon and with other species. Mapping the terrain of these far-reaching debates, Posthumanism will be an invaluable companion to students of cultural studies and modern and contemporary literature.

Review
"Nayar has produced a clear and comprehensive survey and analysis of contemporary posthuman thought. He avoids the excessive reliance on jargon that often mars writing on this topic, and treats the competing views he discusses with an even and incisive hand."
Robert Pepperell, Cardiff School of Art & Design

"Posthumanism is a coming-of-age book for studies of science, technology, and culture. It brings together the most crucial considerations of current debates about the status of the posthuman and, in so doing, beautifully weaves together their political history and current relevance when thinking through this complex terrain."
Andy Miah, University of the West of Scotland

Gridlock: Why Global Cooperation is Failing when We Need It Most, by Thomas Hale, David Held, Kevin Young

The issues that increasingly dominate the 21st century cannot be solved by any single country acting alone, no matter how powerful. To manage the global economy, prevent runaway environmental destruction, reign in nuclear proliferation, or confront other global challenges, we must cooperate. But at the same time, our tools for global policymaking - chiefly state-to-state negotiations over treaties and international institutions - have broken down.

The result is gridlock, which manifests across areas via a number of common mechanisms. The rise of new powers representing a more diverse array of interests makes agreement more difficult. The problems themselves have also grown harder as global policy issues penetrate ever more deeply into core domestic concerns. Existing institutions, created for a different world, also lock-in pathological decision-making procedures and render the field ever more complex. All of these processes - in part a function of previous, successful efforts at cooperation - have led global cooperation to fail us even as we need it most.

Ranging over the main areas of global concern, from security to the global economy and the environment, this book examines these mechanisms of gridlock and pathways beyond them. It is written in a highly accessible way, making it relevant not only to students of politics and international relations but also to a wider general readership.

Review

"A must-read for those thinking about a better global governance."
Pascal Lamy, Director-General of the World Trade Organization

"Their book is convincing, well written, and sobering."
Perspectives on Politics

"International institutions are less and less able to solve global problems even as we need them more and more. Gridlock offers a lucid and concise set of explanations for the dysfunction we observe across the security, economic, and environmental arenas. Best of all, by identifying systemic patterns of failure and the underlying causes, the authors are able to put forward a useful set of practical solutions. A great read for policymakers and experts."
Anne-Marie Slaughter, Princeton University

"There is no shortage of books that make the case for global cooperation; this one explains why we are not getting it. Ranging over international security, the global economy, and the environment, this excellent and sensible book elucidates why our global commons is becoming increasingly unmanageable, as a result in part of the very success of the post-war international system."
Dani Rodrik, Harvard University

"An eye-opening and encouraging book. Not only does it present an analysis of why global cooperation is failing, but it also offers pathways out of gridlock."
Ulrich Beck, University of Munich

"In Gridlock, Thomas Hale, David Held, and Kevin Young offer an ambitious and sweeping treatment of contemporary global issues that combines sociology, political economy, and international relations."
Peter M. Haas, University of Massachusetts Amherst

"It is an accessible, pleasant read thanks to its eloquent prose and remarkable storytelling."
Global Policy

Agamben (Key Contemporary Thinkers), by Claire Colebrook, Jason Maxwell

Until recently, "continental" philosophy has been tied either to the German tradition of phenomenology or to French post-structuralist concerns with the conditions of language and textuality. Giorgio Agamben draws upon and departs from both these lines of thought by directing his entire corpus to the problem of life - political life, human life, animal life, and the life of art. Influenced by the work of Martin Heidegger, Walter Benjamin, and the broader tradition of critical Marxism, Agamben's work poses the profound question for our time - just how exceptional are human beings?

This beautifully written book provides a systematic, engaging overview of Agamben's writings on theology, aesthetics, political theory, and sovereignty. Covering the full range of Agamben's work to date, Claire Colebrook and Jason Maxwell explain Agamben's theology and philosophy by referring the concepts to some of today's most urgent political and ethical problems. They focus on the audacious way in which Agamben reconceptualizes life itself. Assessing the significance of the concepts key to his work, such as biopolitics, sovereignty, the "state of exception," and "bare life," they demonstrate his wide-ranging influence across the humanities.

Review
"This book's conclusion is like a pop song that ends with an unexpected major chord."
Steven Poole, The Guardian

"This is an indispensable systematisation of pop music cultural theory incorporating a vast sweep of references."
Jon Stewart, Brighton Institute of Modern Music, for Times Higher Education "What Are You Reading?"

"This well-organized and well-written book takes a sweeping look at various approaches to the study of popular music, including a musicological one ... An excellent learning tool and a fantastic contribution to the literature."
Choice

"'Pop' is popular with huge listening audiences and not with many music critics - not even as a category to describe a big segment of popular music. Chris Rojek challenges standard ways of dividing the commercial from the authentic and the light from the serious. He does this by a creative engagement with theory and by systematic analysis of issues from modes of distribution to subcultures, the power of record companies, and the nature of collaborative labor and joint authorship. His book is a must-read intervention for all of cultural studies."
Craig Calhoun, New York University

"Joining extraordinary empirical range with shrewd, unflinching theoretical judgment, Rojek has produced a major sociological work on contemporary popular culture. Even as Pop Music, Pop Culture explores the rapidly shifting technological and economic infrastucture of music, Rojek shows us how music connects us to structures of meaning and feeling, and how in a mobile and de-territoralized world, popular music remains ever more important for that."
Jeff Alexander, Yale University

Sustainability, by Leslie Paul Thiele

The pursuit of sustainability has generated lifestyle changes for individuals across the globe, widespread initiatives within civil society and business, historic policies for municipal, regional, and national governments, and crucial protocols and agreements by international organizations. Increasingly, sustainability provides a common language and goal for diverse peoples and nations. Yet the meaning of sustainability remains unsettled, and the term frequently serves as a PR strategy--a green veneer for business as usual--rather than a driver of fundamental change.

Leslie Paul Thiele's accessible yet thorough book provides a broad-ranging introduction to the concept and practice of sustainability today. It addresses the history, scope, and contested meanings of sustainability as an ethical ideal, an ascendant ideology, and a common sense approach to living in an ever more crowded world of increasingly scarce resources. Key topics covered include environmental health and ecological resilience, the promise and unintended consequences of technology, political and legal challenges, economic limits and opportunities, and cultural change.

Unlike most other approaches to this crucial topic, Thiele argues that sustainability requires innovation and adaptation as much as the conservation of resources. His book will be a valuable resource for students in a broad range of courses, including environmental studies and related areas, as well as general readers keen to grapple with one of the most pressing issues of our times.

Review
Winner of the Choice award for Outstanding Academic Title

"A valuable resource for students in a broad range of courses, including environmental studies and related areas, as well as general readers keen to grapple with one of the most pressing issues of our times."
Biotechnology, Agronomy, Society and Environment

"This is the most readable book about sustainability I know. Leslie Paul Thiele has synthesized a vast and complex set of ideas and made them coherent and accessible. Anyone wishing to know what sustainability is all about should read this book."
Robert Costanza, Portland State University

"Non-sustainability has become the very condition of our existence on this planet, whether it be ecological, economic or social. The search for sustainability is a survival imperative. But sustainability is an amoeba word which can mean what we want it to mean. Thiele’s book takes us beyond semantic debates to take up the challenge of adaptation and change. As he puts it, 'sustainability can only be pursued by way of cultural creativity grounded in learning.'"
Vandana Shiva

Thoughtful articulation of sustainability concepts but . . . . .
By Frank T. Manheim
The author shows writing skill, creativity, and interesting quotes and examples in exploring conceptual aspects of sustainability. The author deserves credit for giving due weight to the pathbreaking book by George Perkins Marsh (Man and Nature, 1864) that by tracing in detail the decline of past civilizations due to abuse of nature warned America to take conservation (sustainability) seriously.

I would not quarrel with the previous reviewer's five stars or the high rating by CHOICE magazine - if this book were among the first to treat sustainability. The trouble is, the Google Scholar search engine for books returns around 450,000 titles for the key words "global climate change". A visit to any public library will yield shelffuls of books on this subject. Twenty-seven years after the pathbreaking 1987 U.N. Commission Report, "Our Common Future", that popularized the concept of sustainable development (not the same as U.S. "sustainability"), the book needs to get beyond such generalizations as:

"To be sustainable a practice, relationship, or institution must maintain the health of the natural environment. It must be economically sound. It's participants must be empowered and equitably treated".

In the 2013 book: "State of the World 2013: Is Sustainability Still Possible?" (Worldwatch), The first chapter by Robert Engelman is entitled "Sustainababble". Engelman notes that sustainability has become a household word with practically all writers embracing it.

My point is that the book's philosophical conceptualizations have been overtaken by events. To be relevant the author should have grappled with them. Some examples:

As the title of the Worldwatch book implies, some of our most knowledgeable experts, including the pioneering climate modeler, Jim Hansen, have begun to feel (despairingly in Hansen's case) that it may be too late to halt significant warming and other related changes in global climate even with optimistic projections. The U.S. Congress is gridlocked over environmental and energy policy, and nearly half the U.S. population is skeptical or places low priority on sustainability issues. Former Vice President Al Gore, who won a Nobel prize with his video and book popularizing the climate change issue, is cited with the explanation: "The future whispers, whereas the present shouts". The Worldwatch book as well as a new National Research Council Panel report on "Abrupt Change", includes treatments of impacts of population increases and demographic changes on sustainability issues, bringing up the possibility that curbing adverse effects may not be avoidable. Adaptation and maybe draconian new paradigms will be needed. The author refers

Geoengineering, "resilience", developing industry cooperation rather than conflict in the U.S., political strategies, the possibilities and pathways of achieving global moral consensus, crisis governance ..... none of these are dealt with in the book. A major shortcoming for a scholar dealing with sustainability on a conceptual level is that the book essentially ignores the experience and perspectives of nations that have passed us in environmental performance and policies, like the Scandinavian nations, Netherlands, Germany, and Japan. The author should have dealt with the fact that all European Union members have embraced the "sustainable development" approach that integrates consideration of both economics and environment in making policies, whereas key U.S. environmental laws of the 1970s limited enforcement to considering only environment.

Probability (Key Concepts in Philosophy), by Darrell P. Rowbottom

When a doctor tells you there?s a one percent chance that an operation will result in your death, or a scientist claims that his theory is probably true, what exactly does that mean? Understanding probability is clearly very important, if we are to make good theoretical and practical choices.

In this engaging and highly accessible introduction to the philosophy of probability, Darrell Rowbottom takes the reader on a journey through all the major interpretations of probability, with reference to real-world situations. In lucid prose, he explores the many fallacies of probabilistic reasoning, such as the ?gambler?s fallacy? and the ?inverse fallacy?, and shows how we can avoid falling into these traps by using the interpretations presented. He also illustrates the relevance of the interpretation of probability across disciplinary boundaries, by examining which interpretations of probability are appropriate in diverse areas such as quantum mechanics, game theory, and genetics.

Using entertaining dialogues to draw out the key issues at stake, this unique book will appeal to students and scholars across philosophy, the social sciences, and the natural sciences.

Review

"This is a remarkable book in that, while using the absolute minimum of mathematics, it manages to explain all the main views in the philosophy of probability clearly and accurately. Indeed it covers some recent approaches on which active research is taking place at the moment."
Donald Gillies, University College London

"Easy and fun to read, this book is a thought-provoking introduction to a wide range of important theories and issues about the nature of probability."
Timothy Williamson, University of Oxford

Networked: A Contemporary History of News in Transition, by Adrienne Russell

Journalism, what happened? In the last decade, the industry and the profession have been rocked to the core. Newspapers as consumer product are as ripe for comic mocking and satire as are the techniques of the journalism profession. The contemporary death and life of journalism is the story of an historic cultural transition. We have lived through the end of the mass-media era and the beginning of the networked-media era. We took in news one way for a century and we simply don't do it like that anymore. Networked: A Contemporary History of News in Transition examines this moment in journalism, the conditions that brought it about and the characteristics that have shaped it and will shape its future. In crafting this sophisticated yet accessible study, new-media scholar Adrienne Russell draws on personal interviews with journalists and analysts at the center of the shift, examines innovative and revealing digital news projects, and underlines larger cultural changes that reflect the new news reality. Networked also examines emergent journalism practices that suggest the forces at work and the stakes involved in developments we have all experienced but, caught up in the rush of change, have had limited perspective to interpret.

Review
"In this concise overview, Russell complicates the 'narrative of decline' of traditional news journalism, and celebrates the neo-situationist 'détournements' of what she terms 'fake news' producers such as the Daily Show and the Yes Men."
Steven Poole, The Guardian

"Networked hits the mark...Russell has spoken to and learned from those who are pioneering new journalism practices. She seeks to understand, not to damn. Networked is a great piece of modern scholarship. It reveals much about new types of news and new pathways to democratic engagement. It is an enriching and eloquent book by a writer with a sparkling style and an equally effervescent intellect, and I shall recommend it highly to my students and colleagues."
Times Higher Education

"This short book will be an interesting read for journalists and non-journalists alike, though possibly for different reasons. Most journalists will already have an opinion on the matter, so to them the book will be useful to confirm opinion or sharpen arguments. For the rest, it is a good starting point for forming an opinion on the future of journalism and the news."
LSE Blog

"This timely and thought-provoking book hands us the tools for understanding the key ways in which journalism is changing in today's new media landscape. Combining careful theoretical and historical analysis with discussion of contemporary examples of innovative newsmaking, Russell presents a vision for how journalism can not only survive but thrive in the digital age."
Mizuko Ito, University of California

"In this broad and probing examination of journalism as it has changed in the last two decades, Adrienne Russell offers a genuinely original - and an intellectually enriching - account of new forms of news and new opportunities for democratic engagement. This book matters."
Theodore L. Glasser, Stanford University

Performance and Power, by Jeffrey C. Alexander

Performativity has emerged as a critical new idea across the humanities and social sciences, from literary and cultural studies to the study of gender and the philosophy of action. In this volume, Jeffrey Alexander demonstrates how performance can reorient our study of politics and society.

Alexander develops a cultural pragmatics that shifts cultural sociology from texts to gestural meanings. Positioning social performance between ritual and strategy, he lays out the elements of social performance - from scripts to mise-en-scène, from critical mediation to audience reception - and systematically describes their tense interrelation. This is followed by a series of empirically oriented studies that demonstrate how cultural pragmatics transforms our approach to power.

Alexander brings his new theory of social performance to bear on case studies that range from political to cultural power: Barack Obama's electoral campaign, American failure in the Iraqi war, the triumph of the Civil Rights Movement, terrorist violence on September 11th, public intellectuals, material icons, and social science itself.

This path-breaking work by one of the world's leading social theorists will command a wide interdisciplinary readership.

Review
"This books shatters the ossified categories of all prior comparative studies of culture and power. Alexander reinvents the centerpiece of contemporary critical theories: performativity as the locus of power. Neither the modern state nor secularism but transformation in dramaturgy itself froms the axis of his new global history of civilizations. Accessible artistry."
Richard Biernacki, University of California, San Diego

"That so much of politics is symbolic - terrorism as much as presidential campaigning - is the first surprise of this wide-ranging and wonderfully provocative book. The second surprise, though, is what makes the book so compelling: success in symbolic politics, Alexander argues, depends on performances that fuse speaker, audience, props, and script - a fusion that is increasingly rare in modern societies, and is simultaneously longed for and distrusted. With his customary brio and command of literatures ranging from ancient dramaturgy to contemporary terrorism, Alexander offers a provocative theory of modern politics."
Francesca Polletta, University of California, Irvine

"In this boundary-shifting and provocative book, Alexander brings performance studies into conversation with sociology in ways that challenge both. This is essential reading for anyone interested in these fields as well as for those who wonder how performance endows social actors with such persuasive power."
Diana Taylor, New York University
