Philosophy and the Event, by Alain Badiou

This concise and accessible book is the perfect introduction to Badiou’s thought.  Responding to Tarby’s questions, Badiou takes us on a journey that interrogates and explores the four conditions of philosophy: politics, love, art and science. In all these domains, events occur that bring to light possibilities that were invisible or even unthinkable; they propose something to us.  Everything then depends on how the possibility opened up by the event is grasped, elaborated and embedded in the world – this is what Badiou calls a ‘truth procedure’.  The event creates a possibility but there then has to be an effort – a group effort in the case of politics, an individual effort in the case of love or art – for this possibility to become real and inscribed in the world.

As he explains his thinking on politics, love, art and science, Badiou takes stock of his major works, reflects on their central themes and arguments and looks forward to the questions he plans to address in his future writings.  The book concludes with a short introduction to Badiou’s philosophy by Fabien Tarby.

For anyone wishing to understand the work of one of the most widely read and influential philosophers writing today, this small book will be an indispensable guide.

Review
"An excellent introduction to Badiou's work."
Morning Star

"This exciting and timely volume provides a remarkably lucid and conversational account of Badiou's philosophy of the distinct generation of truths in politics, art, science and love.  These interviews and Tarby's introduction to Badiou's work will be of value to those wishing to become acquainted with Badiou's formidable oeuvre and for Badiou's readers who want to understand his present take on his own corpus."
Claire Colebrook, Penn State University

"Badiou’s work is conceptually creative, enabling and empowering. You can mobilize his concepts theoretically and practically in very powerful ways. Those who haven’t yet read Badiou’s work have got delicious pleasures in store."
Simon Critchley, The New School

AN INTRO: BUT FOR THE SCHOLAR*
By barryb
AN INTRO: BUT FOR THE SCHOLAR: Even if you are already well-versed in post-modern thought. And even if you have already studied Badiou's "Being and Event"; you will want to purchase this manuscript which goes a long way at clarifying Badiou's position and any obscurities from the previous technical work. This text is accessible, but it is still written in philosophical language. I'd call it "conversational-philosophical" language.

This appears five years after"Being and Event"; and it takes up a methodology of the "Socratic dialogue" as a disclosure- tool. This text specifically centers the presentation of Badiou's position around the six specific steps of the "truth-procedure"; "3" in the unconscious and "3" in consciousness. The steps are: 1. Encounter; 2. Grasping; 3. Proposal; 4. Elaboration;
5. Incorporation; and 6. Positing. There is also a detailed articulation of "mediation", so nothing is left out. There is also an excellent discussion of "Art", which takes the place of "Religion" for badiou. "Art" is presented through a process of "4" moments, with each moment containing its own triad. It is very systematically presented.

if you've already conquered "Being and Event", you'll have to mentally transpose this conversational- lexicon back into its technical predecessor. You won't run into the previous concepts. It's best to let this work stand on its own and then "stack the grids" to find convergence. You will not find "void-point", "excess of presentation", "trial of trajectory", law of ideas"; or a host of others. Badiou discusses his system in conversational language but does not "bridge concepts" for the reader. That work is left for you (SORRY).

this book is tagged as an "introduction". But, You need to be a scholar of Badiou's thought to do the bridge- work. I consider it grad-level; and extremely informative. This new moment of entering "Plato's Academy" was a true joy for me. Tarby kept the conversation "tight" and "focused". At first, I was a little negative because I thought, "oh no, it is an introduction". But after finishing the first two chapters, I realized that this work is a "prize". I've seen some "average" ratings for this dialogue. I disagree completely. Forget that tag of "introduction". This is "Conversation" with philosophers who enjoy such conversations. "5" stars for certain.
Just expect to do a little bridge-work.

Annoying format
By F
This is essentially a dictated interview, largely interpreting some of the concepts and discussions argued in Badiou's mainstay titles. I'd recommend spending a similar amount on one of those, or simply looking to YouTube or Google.
