Sustainability, by Leslie Paul Thiele

The pursuit of sustainability has generated lifestyle changes for individuals across the globe, widespread initiatives within civil society and business, historic policies for municipal, regional, and national governments, and crucial protocols and agreements by international organizations. Increasingly, sustainability provides a common language and goal for diverse peoples and nations. Yet the meaning of sustainability remains unsettled, and the term frequently serves as a PR strategy--a green veneer for business as usual--rather than a driver of fundamental change.

Leslie Paul Thiele's accessible yet thorough book provides a broad-ranging introduction to the concept and practice of sustainability today. It addresses the history, scope, and contested meanings of sustainability as an ethical ideal, an ascendant ideology, and a common sense approach to living in an ever more crowded world of increasingly scarce resources. Key topics covered include environmental health and ecological resilience, the promise and unintended consequences of technology, political and legal challenges, economic limits and opportunities, and cultural change.

Unlike most other approaches to this crucial topic, Thiele argues that sustainability requires innovation and adaptation as much as the conservation of resources. His book will be a valuable resource for students in a broad range of courses, including environmental studies and related areas, as well as general readers keen to grapple with one of the most pressing issues of our times.

Review
Winner of the Choice award for Outstanding Academic Title

"A valuable resource for students in a broad range of courses, including environmental studies and related areas, as well as general readers keen to grapple with one of the most pressing issues of our times."
Biotechnology, Agronomy, Society and Environment

"This is the most readable book about sustainability I know. Leslie Paul Thiele has synthesized a vast and complex set of ideas and made them coherent and accessible. Anyone wishing to know what sustainability is all about should read this book."
Robert Costanza, Portland State University

"Non-sustainability has become the very condition of our existence on this planet, whether it be ecological, economic or social. The search for sustainability is a survival imperative. But sustainability is an amoeba word which can mean what we want it to mean. Thiele’s book takes us beyond semantic debates to take up the challenge of adaptation and change. As he puts it, 'sustainability can only be pursued by way of cultural creativity grounded in learning.'"
Vandana Shiva

Thoughtful articulation of sustainability concepts but . . . . .
By Frank T. Manheim
The author shows writing skill, creativity, and interesting quotes and examples in exploring conceptual aspects of sustainability. The author deserves credit for giving due weight to the pathbreaking book by George Perkins Marsh (Man and Nature, 1864) that by tracing in detail the decline of past civilizations due to abuse of nature warned America to take conservation (sustainability) seriously.

I would not quarrel with the previous reviewer's five stars or the high rating by CHOICE magazine - if this book were among the first to treat sustainability. The trouble is, the Google Scholar search engine for books returns around 450,000 titles for the key words "global climate change". A visit to any public library will yield shelffuls of books on this subject. Twenty-seven years after the pathbreaking 1987 U.N. Commission Report, "Our Common Future", that popularized the concept of sustainable development (not the same as U.S. "sustainability"), the book needs to get beyond such generalizations as:

"To be sustainable a practice, relationship, or institution must maintain the health of the natural environment. It must be economically sound. It's participants must be empowered and equitably treated".

In the 2013 book: "State of the World 2013: Is Sustainability Still Possible?" (Worldwatch), The first chapter by Robert Engelman is entitled "Sustainababble". Engelman notes that sustainability has become a household word with practically all writers embracing it.

My point is that the book's philosophical conceptualizations have been overtaken by events. To be relevant the author should have grappled with them. Some examples:

As the title of the Worldwatch book implies, some of our most knowledgeable experts, including the pioneering climate modeler, Jim Hansen, have begun to feel (despairingly in Hansen's case) that it may be too late to halt significant warming and other related changes in global climate even with optimistic projections. The U.S. Congress is gridlocked over environmental and energy policy, and nearly half the U.S. population is skeptical or places low priority on sustainability issues. Former Vice President Al Gore, who won a Nobel prize with his video and book popularizing the climate change issue, is cited with the explanation: "The future whispers, whereas the present shouts". The Worldwatch book as well as a new National Research Council Panel report on "Abrupt Change", includes treatments of impacts of population increases and demographic changes on sustainability issues, bringing up the possibility that curbing adverse effects may not be avoidable. Adaptation and maybe draconian new paradigms will be needed. The author refers

Geoengineering, "resilience", developing industry cooperation rather than conflict in the U.S., political strategies, the possibilities and pathways of achieving global moral consensus, crisis governance ..... none of these are dealt with in the book. A major shortcoming for a scholar dealing with sustainability on a conceptual level is that the book essentially ignores the experience and perspectives of nations that have passed us in environmental performance and policies, like the Scandinavian nations, Netherlands, Germany, and Japan. The author should have dealt with the fact that all European Union members have embraced the "sustainable development" approach that integrates consideration of both economics and environment in making policies, whereas key U.S. environmental laws of the 1970s limited enforcement to considering only environment.

Bought this for a class i took. It turned out to be a pretty good read. If you are interested in sustainability, even if you know very little, this is a great book to introduce the topic or expand your understanding.
