Schmitt was irrevocably compromised by his role as the ‘crown jurist’ of the Third Reich. But by 1936 he had already lost his influential position. After the war, he led a secluded life in his home town in the Sauerland and became a key background figure in the intellectual scene of postwar Germany.

Not a Biography in the Traditional Sense.

"Carl Schmitt: A Biography" ("Carl Schmitt: Aufstieg und Fall") was written by German political scientist Reinhard Mehring after thirty years of study and the recent transcription of Schmitt's diaries. Though Schmitt kept a diary for most of his adult life, most were written in a nearly undecipherable shorthand, and only diaries up to 1933 had been transcribed as of this book's writing. Other personal papers have been preserved, though much of Schmitt's voluminous correspondence with his wife Duska was lost. In his attempt to place Schmitt's academic work in its biographical context, Mehring makes use of these sources, but the slow transcription of the diaries means that more biographical detail will come to light in the future. The translator is Daniel Steuer, who calls this a "quasi-positivist biography" for its effort to lay out the facts of Carl Schmitt's life and work and let the reader draw his or her conclusions. Schmitt was a political and legal theorist whose anti-individualist and anti-legality ideas made him, briefly, the leading state theorist of the National Socialists (Nazis) and have led to renewed interest in Schmitt's ideas in the United States in recent years.

Schmitt's childhood is not accorded much space. Mehring gives a detailed account of his education, during which time Schmitt published his first paper (1910), until the outbreak of World War I. The most detail is offered for the years of the Weimar Republic, during which Schmitt was an academic, because Schmitt produced his most important work in that era and also due to the availability of his diaries to provide biographical detail. Schmitt's decision to join the National Socialist party in 1933 is examined in detail. He became "crown jurist of the Third Reich", for which he has long been remembered, but the years from 1936 until the end of World War II are glossed relatively quickly. After the War, Schmitt was not able to return to academia on account of his role in the National Socialist party, and he was prevented from publishing under his own name until the foundation of the Federal Republic in 1949. He published four monographs in 1950, but his most important work of that decade was about Shakespeare. Though his best work was behind him, Schmitt remained intellectually active and had a following until his death in 1985 at the age of 96.

I approached this book with trepidation, as reviews of the German edition expressed frustration with two aspects of the writing: Endless esoteric references to philosophers, scholars, and legal theorists, and incomprehensible grammar. These problems were not as bad as I feared. In discussing Schmitt's published works, Mehring often makes reference to political philosophers, legal theories, novelists, poets, and even composers. Most I recognized; some would be more familiar to Germans than to Americans. There are repeated references to a few of Shakespeare's well-known plays and to Herman Melville's novella "Benito Cereno", which might be more familiar to an English-speaking audience than a German one. These references are far more numerous in the first third of the book than in subsequent chapters, as the Weimar period was Schmitt's most academically active. It helps to have access to Wikipedia on a mobile device, so that you can look up any reference that you don't recognize without disrupting your concentration. I was frustrated, however, by some terms from legal philosophy whose English equivalent I could not figure out.

There is a great deal of biographical trivia in "Carl Schmitt: A Biography", but I'm not sure how much value it has. In his "Afterword to the English Edition", which would serve better as a foreword, Reinhard Mehring expresses his intention to discuss Schmitt's work "in detail and against its biographical context," which will serve as the book's narrative thread. This book doesn't have a strong narrative, though. Most of it reads like a very long dissertation. The detail that Mehring provides for Schmitt's published works is their theoretical background. He is poor at explaining what the work in question is about and usually makes no attempt to do so. No academic context is ever given: There is no mention of what Schmitt's contemporaries were writing at the time, where the ideas came from in the concrete sense, what influence they had, if any. Bizarrely, the only mention of how Schmitt's work was received is at the beginning of Chapter 17. The lack of introduction or explanation of the major works, which would only require a couple sentences, may assume that the audience is already familiar with the work but does not make for a happy reader.

When I read, in the Afterword, Mehring's intent to place Schmitt's work in biographical context, I was surprised. I was constantly frustrated by the lack of biographical context. I had almost no sense of Schmitt's personality or how it may have informed his work until page 400. The account of Schmitt's life until 1933 is ridiculously detailed, but it is like rapportage: He was here or there and did this and that, without any explanation or apparent relevance. For example, a short paragraph describing Schmitt's activities in October 1930 says that he met two people on separate occasions, an article was published, he met some other people, he attended a funeral, he spoke in front of 1500 people, he wrote a legal opinion and was unhappy with the fee, and he spent an evening with two "gentrified" friends and lamented the decline of their class. Why would anyone bother to write this? Many passages go on for pages in that vein. We are treated to a list of courses he took at university. He had a falling out with the first woman he intended to marry, to which the author dedicates one sentence. Mehring claims that "Schmitt experienced the years after 1912 as a time of dramatic crisis and felt close to suicide and madness," but little evidence is offered.

After the War, Schmitt's inspiration becomes more comprehensible. His writing reflected Germany's defeat, the political re-ordering of Europe, and his own experience at Nuremberg. His view of himself as a victim of discrimination when he was excluded from academia and resentment at his loss of position finally provide some insight into Schmitt's character and the sense of exceptionalism that so influenced his worldview. But I had no idea what was behind his theories until this point. Up to that point, it is as if Schmitt only had an intellectual life, as if his theories originated only from theories. He must have been influenced by something more concrete or at least more personal, but Mehring provides no clue. -Except perhaps in Schmitt's Catholicism, which, along with his sense of exceptionalism, explains pretty much everything. But his Catholicism is mentioned matter-of-factly, without allusion to the Church's authoritarian nature. I realize that Mehring is trying not to write a "psychological biography". But you have to give readers information. Non-Catholics and even Catholics unfamiliar with the Church in the early 20th century will not make the connection.

Schmitt's pervasive sense of exceptionalism begs the question: Was he a narcissist? In someone so accomplished, it is difficult to distinguish between narcissism and simple ambition and arrogance without having a lot more information. Germans always seem shocked and appalled that any normal person could have had anything to do with National Socialism, but Schmitt's dalliance with the party seems to me mundane at its heart. He was an academic theorist who was offered a unique opportunity to influence the real world. National Socialist politicians liked him, at first. Ever the social striver, he was flattered and elated to have an opportunity to shape legal practice under a new government. He was not the last academic to jump at the chance to put theory into practice when a favorable government comes to power, only to be forced to retreat tail-between-legs when things don't go as hoped. It happens a lot. Carl Schmitt's role became scandalous only because National Socialism became notorious. Yes, he should have abandoned the party after June 1934, as Mehring proposes. But ambitious people are often single-minded.

Translating "Carl Schmitt: A Biography", whose text runs 548 pages with notes another 150 pages, is a monumental task, requiring not only translation skills and perseverance but an expansive knowledge of 20th century German history. Daniel Steuer's work is impressive, and his footnotes liberal. German readers complained of incomprehensible sentences and questionable grammatical structures. Steuer mentions that the original text contained a lot of very short sentences, which he has sometimes combined for smoother reading. The prose has a choppy, unpolished quality in places. It bothered me more early in the book; I got used to it. But it was not difficult to read. For that, I thank Steuer. There are some questionable word choices, unfortunate adverbs, and sentences that could have been better-phrased. I think it's a question of how much liberty a translator is willing to take or should take. Reinhard Mehring is no stylist. He lists -not in paragraph form- 42 reasons Schmitt may have had for joining the National Socialists. My impression is that Steuer improved readability but let some eccentricities stand.

This is not a biography in the traditional sense, perhaps because Reinhard Mehring is not a biographer. "Carl Schmitt: A Biography" was clearly written for an academic audience with a background in Schmitt's theories and in German history of the Weimar and World War II eras. It attempts to place Schmitt's work in biographical context only in the chronological sense. It is striking for its catalog of superfluous detail and near-complete absence of the sort of information we would need to grasp Carl Schmitt, to understand his point of view, why he thought as he did, or even how he thought beyond his published works. Some of the omissions assume prior knowledge, like the lack of explanation of his job as a legal trainee and other aspects of the German legal system. But the absence of explanation of what Schmitt did as "crown jurist of the Third Reich", beyond giving speeches, or why he fell out of favor after 1936, why he had enemies within the National Socialists, who they were, or how they were able to oust him from their bureaucratic apparatus is a glaring omission in a biography of a man the course of whose life was dramatically altered by his associations during the War.

Perhaps the book's intended audience already knows the answers to those critical questions. That's why I say this is not a biography in the traditional sense. Perhaps Mehring's stated intent to place Schmitt's work in context should be interpreted as filling in biographical details around the published works, no matter how obscure or trivial, in the way you might fill in blank spaces on a canvas. The crux of the matter, the man and his experiences, are mostly omitted, because the intended audience already has that part of the picture. Do they? I couldn't say. Any analysis of Schmitt's character is reserved for his reactions after the War. Mehring admits that this book has no over-arching theme. He leaves the reader to draw his own conclusions but unfortunately provides inadequate material with which to do so. It is written in the vein of "the contextualization and historicization of Schmitt as a political actor." It places Schmitt in historical context, with which you need already be familiar, but I didn't learn much about Schmitt as a political actor. I assume that scholars of Schmitt will find this book useful in filling in some gaps. I am not a Schmitt scholar, so I must review the book as a biography, hence my tepid star rating.

This is biography of Carl Schmitt; a German jurist, from a Prussian heritage, theologian and legal theorist (1888–1985). A person who significantly influenced Western political and legal thinking in the last century. Carl Schmitt and his writings continue to pose serious questions, even in the present 21st century. For any debate on liberalism and governmental democracy, specifically at a time in both in the United States and in the European Union, where the analysis of constitutional law is experiencing extensive change. Yet his life and work have also stimulated significantly by critical debate. While his discourse/concepts have been used and dispersed by prominent academics on both sides of the political spectrum. However, his active labours to eradicate Jewish influence from German law being one of the more disturbing of his actions. This therefore, has cast a cloud over his life and legacy. Still, his many supporters have generally been successful in rehabilitating his character/image in claiming that Schmitt's was an "anti-Semite of chance," i.e. just a fleeting affliction, to advance his standing with the Nazis and their various organelles.

In Reinhard Mehring’s biography there is meticulous attention to detail. The author brings to the fore, Schmidt's work using new sources that were formerly unavailable on the life and work of this individual. This tome is truly a grand undertaking, which not only looks at the public side of the Schmitt but also his at times troubled private life. This book is aimed at various audiences from academics to the lay person and can be treated very much as a reference source on this enigmatic individual.

Over the past four days I have been digesting Reinhard Mehring's Carl Schmitt: A Biography. It over 700 pages long... and while it pull no punches, it also does not seek to act as prosecutor. It is very detailed. I had two quick reading, and now I am going very slowly over it. Why? Because it not only give rather very detailed events in his life (both public and private--and the private here is very very detailed, especially his sexuality (so post moderns lit crit types might love it)), but it also addresses his works and connect them both to the historical contexts of what is happening but also the intellectual milieu Schmitt is reacting to. It shows all the ties of Schmitt to many many thinkers of the period.

The biography offers a useful correction to understanding Schmitt's writings for English authors who really don't have access too important segments that help constitute the whole whole of his thought. Schmitt never wrote a single unifying work as Hobbes did in his Leviathan--even if some think Concept of the Political serves such a unifying role--the biography suggests otherwise. Thus I think the translation of this biography will be very useful for seeing Schmitt in a much different light.

Generally I would strongly recommend this. But there remains lots of small errors that more professional proof reading should have corrected. Yet still this does not mar this wonderful work.

A Peace and Justice Student Review

I am an graduating senior, so my humble opinion should only count from the perspective of a peace and justice studies student.

I just wanted to say that this was one of the main books we used in my conflict transformation/peacebuilding course during my undergrad. My overall opinion is that it was a very strong and helpful textbook. I have never had a textbook in my life that once I read the first and second chapter, I couldn't stop reading it.

I must say I was dissapointed by their treatment of environmental ethics and conflict. There was little mention of nonathropocentrism and how that might change the field. Instead, they refer to the field in very anthropocentric terms, which is the status quo, but they failed to at least acknowledge it. Also, they lightly touch on the history of nonviolence in an early chapter, and then they shelf it for the rest of the book, which was unfortunate.

I find it helpful that they do a treatment of the field that recognizes and respect also other theories, as well as non-western, non-northern thinking at certain points. It does a good job at responding to critiques from outside the field. It also opens a way to see the the contemporary challenges field, and where future work will need to be done in order to advance the field. For example, they begin scratching the surface at points about cyberpeacemaking, and talking about the role of social media in regards to contemporary conflict resolution. However, it is still such a novel idea, that they provide a theoretical basic of what is happening but still recognize as a new frontier.

I am glad I got to read this book before graduating. I feel it has helped me frame the field better, and the knowledge I have gained from it will serve valuable to me as a prospective peacebuilder. I think this textbook should be a must.

About the Author
Stephanie Luce is an Associate Professor of Labor Studies at the Murphy Institute, City University of New York. She is a leading expert on living wages. A Must Read for Public Administrators!

This book is easy to read and is timely, relevant to the world climate change. However, some countries will be hit harder than others.This is an issue the world needs to be prepared for in governance and policy. More developed countries need to become aware, and be prepared for the imminent events to affect the most vulnerable, least developed countries. But global leaders also must be aware of the affects more developed countries also face. Public officials, administrators, and government leaders need to be aware of the events that are snowballing globally..

Just another book

There is nothing bad about this book, but there is also nothing particularly interesting.
I did not understand what the theme or conclusion of the book actually was. Well, there was no formal conclusion (chapter).
Also I do not know how the countries were picked, maybe I just overlooked it.
It is great not to generalize, however I wish the authors tried to find some bigger finding.
All in all the book is great for people who like descriptive political science and prefer modest claims.

Assmann explains that the Early Modern period witnessed the birth of the idea of dual religion with, on the one hand, the religion of reason and, on the other, that of revelation. This concept gained new significance in the Enlightenment when the dual structure of religion was transposed onto the individual. This meant that man now owed his allegiance not only to his native religion, but also to a universal 'religion of mankind'.

A Remarkable Examination of Enlightenment Religion and its Importance Today

Jan Assmann, an Egyptologist and author of numerous books about ancient religion, including Moses and Egyptian: The Memory of Egypt in Western Monotheism (1998) and From Akhenaten to Moses: Ancient Egypt and Religious Change (2014), delves into another facet of ancient influences on modern religion with Religio Duplex: How the Enlightenment Reinvented Egyptian Religion (2014). Much has been written about the Enlightenment and religion, but never from such a unique and interesting perspective.

Assmann begins with the Greeks and Egyptians, and a Greek misapprehension of Egyptian religion, for which, he says, the Greeks were not entirely responsible. Rather, he argues, "there is much evidence to suggest that the Egyptians who were interrogated by the Greeks...themselves set out to disseminate an image of their culture as a religio duplex, a religion split between popular and elite culture."

The Egyptian motivation, Assmann tells us, was to present their culture in a positive light. In this they succeeded, and Egyptian religion came to the 17th and 18th centuries as a "Greco-Roman confabulation," he writes, "rather than [as] the product of a one-sided Greek projection of native ideas and institutions onto the Egyptian world." In fact it is the admiring ancient Greek historians who are responsible for the positive impression held by Enlightenment thinkers of Egyptian religion.

Assmann suggests that this idea of religio duplex entered Egyptian religion as a result of Greek cultural imperialism, which drove Egyptian religion away from the masses and into the temples. It is well known that there was in the ancient world a popular religion and an intellectual, or elite religion. But Assmann goes further than this, developing the idea of a popular "outer" face of religion and an inner, or "mysterious" experience limited to a few and transposing it into our own times via the vehicle of Enlightenment thinking.

This takes him through a discussion of ancient Egyptian scripts, especially the hieroglyphs (holy writing) and the assumed "alliance between writing and secrecy," which Assmann tells us is as old as the invention of writing. He offers a vigorous refutation of this assumption and points us toward the earliest uses of writing, which were administrative and economic. No mysteries there. Writing did, however, play a part in the formation of elites and thus contribute to the esoteric nature of religion.

On this journey we hear the ancient voices of Plato, Porphyrus, Plotinus and Iamblichus, Medieval thinkers like Thomas Aquinas and Moses Maimonides (who paints a picture of Judaism as religio duplex), and various renaissance scholars, including the 16th century Dominican Giordano Bruno, Francis Bacon, John Spencer, and Bishiop William Warburton, among others, names both familiar and unknown.
This is Jan Assmann and so the journey is neither easy and are many an excursus. But the journey is always rewarding and intellectually stimulating. This is a good translation and his thoughts are easy to follow, even if you do not see the connections immediately.

Assmann returns to Moses, of course, and the dual nature of Jewish ritual law, a "historical perspective" and an "esoteric dimension." The idea here being that Paganism is "pure idol worship" with no glimmer of a concealed truth, while Judaism directs the worshiper away from idols and towards the "truth." Of course, for Renaissance thinkers, Assmann points out, Pagan and "especially Egyptian" religion were seen as religio duplex.

It would take a longer review than is possible here to trace each thread of Assmann's thesis to its conclusion. Suffice it to say he next pursues religio duplex and political theology before moving on to freemasonry, finally arriving at the Era of Globalization, religious cosmopolitanism, idea that all religions ultimately point to the same god, and religio duplex as dual membership.

The idea of dual membership is easily explained: Assmann relates that late antiquity's "belief in the universality of religious truth," resonated "so strongly in the eighteenth century," bringing us to the idea of a "religion of mankind" and "homo duplex." Here, he tells us, "The opposition between popular and arcane religion was relocated within the individual...in the sense of a 'both/and' - a dual membership - rather than an 'either/or'. Knowledge of the universal religion of mankind "did not mean having to renounce one's particular, native religion."

Speaking of either/or, Assmann concludes with a powerful lesson that will surprise no one familiar with his previous writings, especially his idea of the 'Mosaic Distinction': "Politicization has emerged as the key problem of the last three decades; for it is evident that the so-called return of religion consists, above all, in the strengthened political claims being made on its behalf, while globalization makes it ever more necessary that religions develop cosmopolitan perspectives and learn to exercise a modicum of self-restraint."

It is only appropriate, I think, that at the very end of this remarkable book, he hearkens back to the Mosaic Distinction, that is, the idea of true/false in religion, and the problems that result, problems we are, I think, all familiar with in this age of rampant fundamentalism, when "religion is reduced to a single dimension, and absolute and exclusive religious truths are elevated to the status of universal truths."
I cannot recommend this book enough to those who are fans of Professor Assmann's writings.

The Evolution of the Popular vs. Elite Forms of Religion & Their Relevance Today.

"Religio Duplex: How the Enlightenment Reinvented Egyptian Religion" is a dissertation by German Egyptologist Jan Assmann on the evolution of the concept of "religio duplex", in which religion takes two forms, possessing both a public and an arcane theology, which may manifest themselves in rational/revealed, popular/elite, uninitiated/initiated, exoteric/esoteric, sensual/spiritual, and/or universal/particular faces of the religion. The topic is relevant, Assmann asserts, because "religion has a place in the our globalized world only as `religio duplex', that is, as religion that understands itself as one among many and has learned to see itself through the eyes of the other, without losing sight of the concealed god or concealed truth that forms the vanishing point of all religions." He is proposing a practical way for diverse religions to relate to one another in the modern world, as many have before him, but Assmann offers a theological and historical basis for it.

Jan Assmann is in a excellent position to do this, as he is both Emeritus Professor of Egyptology at Heidelberg University and Professor of Cultural Studies and Theory of Religion at the University of Konstanz. His dual specialties allow rare insight into the history of "religio duplex", because the concept first appeared in Greek writings about ancient Egyptian religion. These depicted Egyptian religion as two-tiered, with a pronounced divide between the popular and elite relationships to the gods, demonstrated graphically in the alphabetic demotic script of the common man and the pictographic hieroglyphs, considered to be the language of the gods and only decipherable by elite scribes and priests. Assmann does point out that this was the Greek perception of Egyptian religion, learned from second-hand sources who had their own agendas. But he is speaking of the concept of "religio duplex" at this point, not of religions in themselves.

While the fascination with ancient Egyptian religion as a "religio duplex" peaked in the late 18th century, Assmann also incorporates the idea of Judaism as a "religio duplex". It was presented as such by the Medieval philosopher Maimonides, who made a distinction between juristic and ritual law. The purpose of juristic law is the "establishment of a just social order", while that of ritual law is the "abolition of idolatry and the triumph of the true religion." Assmann also points to the work of Moses Mendelssohn in the late 18th century as being instrumental, along with that of dramaturg Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, in reinterpreting the "religio duplex" of the ancients into a dichotomy of universality (Mendelssohn's "religion of mankind") and cosmopolitanism (particular religion), that tends to be the way that the industrialized world views religion today. Between these concepts of "religio duplex" lay the contributions of Enlightenment philosophers and "scientific freemasonry."

I was frustrated that Assmann left me wondering whether or not he agreed with the Greek interpretation of Egyptian religion as a "religio duplex". It turns out that question is addressed, for the Hebrew Bible as well as for Egyptian religion, in the last chapter. While I agree with Assmann's conclusion that the popular and arcane forms of religion are now "relocated within the individual," and "religio duplex" is the future of religion on an increasingly globalized planet, I see a danger in assuming, as Assmann has, that the First World values that he considers universal emanate from natural, universal values rather than from elitist, revealed theories. It is sometimes the latter. It is also important to recognize that different parts of the world are at different stages in socio-political development and are not necessarily prepared for a "religio duplex". In any case, Assmann is thought-provoking, and I very much appreciate the insight into the history of this concept.

A Specialized Interest, For History and Philosophy Scholars

This is a dense, scholarly work by a German academic who's not only a noted Egyptologist but also well-versed in European history.This isn't a book that's likely to appeal to the casual reader interested either in the Enlightenment in Western Europe or in Egyptology. It's a specialized interest, to be sure. Philosophy majors might enjoy it, and so might people with a heavy interest in studying the history of freemasonry.

Thoughtful Sociology Text--or Protest Organizers' Handbook

If you're thinking of starting, or getting involved in, a contemporary protest movement, then you probably ought to read PROTEST: A CULTURAL INTRODUCTION TO SOCIAL MOVEMENTS. It presents a thoughtful, complete analysis of modern social movements, and is valuable for the "dilemma" sidebars that describe the inevitable problems that accompany organized protest movements, and that must be dealt with by protest organizers.

The dilemmas are:

Janus (do you encourage a collective identity that emphasizes members' similarities, or their differences?);

Dirty hands (will you use deception or money or other suspect tactics to achieve your ends?);

Character work (will you portray your protesters as victims or heroes? will you portray your opponents as villains or clowns?);

Innovation (how far or fast will you push societal boundaries?);

Media (how will you use the media to get attention without being portrayed badly or suffering backlash?);

Organization (how will you keep rules aimed at sustaining the organization from becoming ends in themselves that will destroy your mission?);

Extension (how do you find the right size for your movement to be maximally effective?);

Naughty or nice (how do you choose between tactics that make you appear morally upright and tactics that make you appear stronger and more threatening?);

Identity (how will you manage the collective identity so that subgroups won't split off?);

Band of brothers (how will you keep face-to-face bonds from crowding out the larger group?);

Powerful allies (how can you keep politicians, etc. from twisting your movement to their own needs instead of using their power on your behalf?);

Audience segregation (if you convey different messages to different audiences, how can you avoid being seen as deceitful?); and

Articulation (how do you avoid demobilization resulting from achieving a clearly stated goal?).

PROTEST is, in essence, a textbook for a sociology course--more analytical than practical--though it also functions to some extent as a protest organizer's handbook. The reason I was interested in this book, was that I hoped it would provide some insight into local, recurring protests in Oakland, CA (e.g., Occupy Oakland, multiple ad hoc protests over police brutality in Oakland and other cities), and perhaps offer some explanations for why these protests so often result in looting and vandalism of local businesses. Unfortunately, this topic ("naughty or nice") was barely touched on, and the discussion of Occupy Oakland was extremely superficial.

As a sociology text, PROTEST probably merits 5 stars. However, it was too theoretical and "above the fray" to be of value to me. I rate PROTEST at 3 stars ("It's okay" on the official Amazon scale).

Academic, yes, but intriguing and thoughtful look at the elements that can create or snuff a protest movement

As has been noted, this is an academic text that walks the reader through how and why protest movements are created. They don't just happen because a few people decided to wave a flag - there are a variety of situations that have to occur, flourish and receive support for a protest of any kind to be successful.

James Jasper dispassionately describes this process. A college student with an interest in how society functions would find this very interesting. Even how protest chants are designed to rhyme - it seems obvious, of course, but it's an important part of how the protest community comes together.

I think he gave a little too much credit to Occupy Wall Street - it's certainly a valid case study of an organic protest, but I think he saw more significance than it deserved. But, that's just opinion - what Occupy does is give his the research the timely jumping-off point to start his research. He probably could have used the Tea Party more than he did, but personally I don't think that was a protest movement, but a bought-and-paid for political campaign. Again, my opinion.

It's a difficult book to review because it's not a text that can be quickly summarized, and there's no "plot." But - a reader, academic or otherwise, will come out of it with a better understanding of the roots of protest movements and how they operate within a culture. I'm teaching a writing class in 'social justice' this upcoming semester, and parts of this book will be useful. Today's "culture" (a term he defines) operates online so much that face-to-face protests are seen much more 'in your face' than a 1960s audience would have perceived them.

Part of Occupy's success was it demanded visual attention - but then the visual presentation is part of the protest, and clothes, etc.,allow the protestors to be quickly marginalized by the media or other observers. I'm not sure college students give much thought to how all these factors come together, and I think parts of this book will help them understand what might seem obvious at first glance - but isn't.

So solid and interesting book - yes, academic and research-based, so not for a general audience. But any reader with an interest in social constructs is going to be intrigued, I think.

Understanding protest better

Jasper’s book is valuable both for movement participants to get a broader view of what they are part of and for outsiders who want a sense of what really goes on in social movements.

The book covers a standard set of topics: defining social movements, the role of meanings in their operation and presence, the wider social context, recruitment, maintaining operations and momentum, making decisions, interactions with other players, and winning/losing. Jasper’s cultural approach has a couple distinctive features. He emphasises the roles of meanings for participants, such as how they see themselves; these meanings draw on beliefs and images in the surrounding culture. Associated with this, he emphasises the role of emotions in social movement dynamics, an area in which he is a pioneering researcher.

Jasper also brings to his treatment his special interest in dilemmas: choices that movement activists need to make that involve difficult trade-offs.

One thing that comes across strongly in the book is that activism isn’t all that easy. Movements don’t start or continue by accident: lots of committed people work to bring an issue to public attention, pressure governments or directly implement solutions.

Of special interest are social movement organisations (SMOs). Some well-known examples are Greenpeace and Amnesty International, and there are thousands of others. SMOs are not the same as social movements, which typically incorporate multiple SMOs, independent activists and supporters, and occasional participants. Movements are also more than people and organisations. They involve knowledge, beliefs, assumptions, symbols and many other intangibles.

People who have been involved in social movements often have a deep understanding of how they operate and what they are up against. So what is there for them to learn from Jasper’s book? The advantage of a straightforward, well-written text is putting personal experiences in context. After all, there are hundreds of different social movements, with quite a few commonalities but also a number of differences.

I wish there had been a book like this back in the 1970s when I first became involved in social movements.
