"Gunkel and Taylor reveal an unacknowledged dimension of Heidegger’s media theory which contradicts the predominant understanding of his work. They argue that there is something to be found in Heidegger’s thought which prevents one from succumbing to a widespread illusion – the illusion of the neutrality of technique, what McLuhan later called 'the current somnambulism'. Thus, a profoundly productive, critical dimension in Heidegger’s theory becomes accessible which stands in harsh opposition to the 'somnambulism' that this philosopher himself performed in his utterly problematic personal, ideological existence. A lucid writing style, a logical plan of content, and extensive documentation distinguish this volume. Its adaptability in deciphering Martin Heidegger's individualist prose-his virtuoso Philosophendeutsch-and construing it sympathetically and helpfully, adds to the book's effectiveness. As with the other volumes in the Polity Press series, "Theory and the Media," it is addressed to an academic and "media-savvy" readership. Also, all those willing to test their knowledge of, or oblige their curiosity about a timely and provocative topic, can well profit from it. Some might wish that the authors had relied less on secondary translations, and more on direct recourse to the original (M. H. Gesamtausgabe, Frkf. a. M.: Klostermann Vrlg., 1975 ff.). Others may ask, why they had not added space, to develop their plethora of engaging topics more fully. The following merely touches on a select few major points among the many advanced by the authors.

A primer to this review should note that Heidegger's frequent manner of expression resembles a quasi-cryptic meander between philosophy and "poetry." This offers a chance to indulge in liberal flexibility within reason, of interpreting Heidegger's words. His foremost intention to pose questions and free thinking, has further vouchsafed his prodigious influence on postmodern speculation, from deconstructionism on to neo-pragmatism. The current authors' stimulating discussion partakes of that legacy to best advantage. Overarching all, hovers their caveat regarding Heidegger's persistent, didactic challenge: His emphasis on the process of questioning as such, while abstaining from offering prescriptively conclusive, let alone formulaic answers.

The authors examine aspects of language, especially its use by Heidegger, the systematic manipulation of truth by the media, technical procedures of mechanically organized communication, and technology per se. Of further interest to them is the relationship of "truth" versus "mediation," and Heidegger's related distinction between consequential versus inconsequential variants of language. The latter includes the difference between "die Rede," as existential speech (language, words, talk, etc.), and "die Sprache," as an ontologically comprehensive entity. Also being considered is "art," as playing an attenuated or transmuted, ancillary cultural role. As all else within the contemporary ethos, it, too, is thoroughly besotted by technology-über-alles.

Gunkel and Taylor deserve kudos for elucidating the apparent failure of the media to assess the comprehensive role of technology in essential questions of human existence. Their approach is closely correlated with their search for meaning of Heidegger's potentially transformative theories on "das Wesen" of technology (designating variably its being, essence, substance, state, condition, nature, supreme entity, et al). In turn, this consideration bears decisively on consequential communication, the technology of media instrumentation and technology in general, as a constant and superseding function in contemporary life.

The authors' analysis of the media relates to Heidegger's hermeneutic distinction between two approaches: The Dasein-immanent (or phenomenologically factual and immediate), and the Sein-inherent (or ontologically essential or pervasive). This distinction aids in critically calibrating the gap separating media responsiveness to the ontic, noumenal, or sensate experiencing of data, and the recurrent negligence by the media of the higher-order meaning, i.e., of "das Wesen" of technology.

In spite of the volume's brevity, it treats of Heidegger's purview of technology effectively as-we may assume-an ubiquitous, perpetually active force in the lives of individuals and of society at large. We may deduce that, in its relation to the media, that potency fluctuates between being a lasting ogre, or an ever-present essence of unbiased mores. Heidegger's theme and the authors' discussion, insinuate the ad hoc, seemingly helter-skelter, stake-race by today's media. Their hot pursuit of fleeting technical innovations, and their gratuitous, celebratory inaugurations, defy their coherent appraisal.

The philosopher's Sein-Dasein bipolarity contrasts with the monocular acuity of today's media. It illumines the imbalanced doppelgänger nature of technology as techne-logos (art, craft, trade, etc.; and cause, communication, doctrine, question, etc.). In turn, Heidegger's own, famously opalescent, formulation of his duologic thought model of "being/existence" thus emerges as a prescheduled paradigm. Whatever else this may infer, it illumines today's media as being perspicacity-challenged in their ability to recognize the "whole picture."

Heidegger's provocative questioning opens the floodgates of discourse and speculation. In the present context, we may ask: Will the media pause to glance at such of the authors' various sources as Heidegger's foundational Being and Time (1927), or his specialized, The Question Concerning Technology (1954)? And will they note Gunkel's and Taylor's enquiry into the philosopher's probing insights on the communication of reflection, his provisos on the pervasive nature of technology, and his sinuous evocations of a path to the future of technologic civilization? Or will they, in their frenetic rush from one techno-phenom to another, continue missing the forest for all the trees?
