Hans-Joachim Neumann is Emeritus Professor of Medicine at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin.
Henrik Eberle is Lecturer in Modern History at the University of Halle-Wittenberg, Germany. In 2005, in collaboration with Mathias Uhl, he wrote The Hitler Book, which became an international bestseller.

An excellent and thorough treatment

The long opening chapter is worth the price of the whole book: it discusses and debunks the astonishing collection of myths about Hitler's health. Entire books of wild speculation have been written based on a few hints, but Neumann and Eberle have exhaustively looked at the evidence and reached sound historical conclusions. Utter certainty is always hard to come by, but as far as reasonable evidence can be seen, Hitler was not a cocaine addict or a homosexual. He did not suffer from syphilis, inbreeding, urolagnia, or (contrary to the popular song) monorchidism. He was not bitten as a child in a sensitive place by a billy goat (this was a new one on me, but was actually widely believed at one time)!
From reading biographies of Hitler, I had come to the impression that the notorious Dr. Morell was either incompetent or a sinister Rasputin-like figure, keeping the Fuehrer doped up and perhaps hypnotized. But evidence doesn't support this: he was a well-respected physician and no quack, and his treatments were very much in accord with medical practice of the time (even if some of them, like leeches, are no longer much used).
Discussions of Hitler's health have typically picked out one or two pieces of evidence and used them to grind an axe of some sort, either to ridicule him (e.g. in wartime propaganda) or to try to excuse his crimes by medicalizing them. Whatever the reasons for the havoc which he wrought on the world, a sober examination of the evidence does not support the view that any medical condition was to blame.
The book is fully accessible to the layman, with no prior medical knowledge assumed. The authors take the reader carefully through all the evidence and Hitler's full medical history, as far as it can be determined. The discussion of the injuries from the July 20 bomb and the tremors affecting him at the end of his life was particularly interesting and often surprising. I learned quite a lot.

May Be the Final Word on Hitler's Health

This book, first published in Germany in 2009 and written by an Emeritus Professor of Medicine and a teacher of Contemporary History will be a welcome addition for collectors of books about Hitler. The authors conduct a thorough examination of Hitler's physical health as well as the biographical backgrounds of the physicians who treated him including Theodor Morell, Hitler's personal physician and the only doctor Hitler trusted.
The book is rich with exhaustive details.
Reports of infighting, jealousy and jockeying for position, among physicians and details of some of their dismissals were interesting.
We learn that Hitler had an aversion to being touched which made physical examinations difficult. He had a pathological fear of infection which caused him to avoid people with flu-like symptoms. (Note: This is indicative of a possible psychiatric/psychological symptom which is not the focus of this book.)
According to the authors, Neumann and Eberle, Hitler had an extensive range of drugs which the authors painstakingly list, describe and picture, but they emphasize that Hitler was casual about taking them.
They talk about Hitler's right vocal cord polyp (It had a diameter of 2 mm.) which was surgically removed.
They discuss Hitler's irritable bowel syndrome.
He had chronic digestive disorders probably attributed to his vegetarian diet.
He had a likely diagnosis of deteriorating coronary sclerosis in 1941 and probable high blood pressure.
The book goes into detail in order to clear up myths of Hitler's supposed addiction. The authors list and describe every potentially addictive drug that Hitler was known to have taken and make a case for him not being addicted to any one of them.
The authors found that Hitler suffered from stomach cramps which seemed to depend on his `mental constitution'and were probably psychosomatic. The tremor in his left arm which first manifested in 1941 was a symptom of Parkinson's disease.
The authors state that Hitler's employee's beliefs that Hitler was ill; that he origionally 'meant well' and was impaired, and could not have been answerable for his actions relieved them of their own responsibility.
Neumann and Eberle conclude that `Hitler did not suffer extensively from acute illnesses.'
The book ends on this note: ` War was not waged and Jews exterminated because Hitler was ill but because most Germans shared his convictions, made him their Fuhrer and followed him... Hitler's actions were not influenced by a mental disease or psychotropic substances... but stemmed from his `primary personality'.'
The authors conclude with a powerful ending and last chilling sentence that Hitler, 'the leader of the NSDAP, chancellor of the German Reich and Commander-in-Chief of the German Wehrmacht was healthy and accountable.'
Worthwhile for collectors.

An Interesting Diagnosis

The authors state their mindset with the opening sentence of the book which states "Actually Hitler was never sick." This was attributed to his main personal physician over many years, Professor Dr. Theodor Morell, in a conversation with one of his early attending physicians, Dr. Karl Brandt in September of 1945 while both men were captives of the allies and trying to curry favor with their captors by tattling on each other. Unfortunately for Brandt, he was hanged a short time later, while Morell died of advanced cardiac disease in 1946. Brandt thought of Morell as being a quack and a charlatan.
Each chapter is filled with copious footnotes and cites given in a separate section at the end of the book. Since most people are not going to be that familiar with the politics and medical names used, I found this to be helpful, but it did slow down the reading materially to keep going back to these pages, yet it helped me to understand some of the background and where the authors were coming from. A detailed section of the primary purpose of each of the drugs used was also helpful.
However,a well-known American psychiatrist of the day, Walter C. Langer thought Hitler was a socially persuasive narcissistic manipulator, which I would agree with and those descriptors pretty much describe a sociopath, which most people would consider a sick individual.
The authors describe Hitler as suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome [IBS]. He showed signs of Parkinson's Disease [PD] by at least 1941 and possibly as early as 1939. He also suffered from hypertension and coronary sclerosis plus severe dental caries. This part of the book gave very detailed descriptions of all of Hitler's medical problems down to the number of bowel movements he had or did not have per day. They also state that there is no scientific medical evidence that Hitler was suffering from any mental illness and they didn't consider him to be sick. The man had IBS, Parkinsonism, which his favorite doctor, Morell, misdiagnosed so didn't treat him properly for it. He also suffered from eye problems and a recurring dermatitis, both of which are symptoms of Parkinson's Disease, but since Morell didn't recognize it, he didn't tie all the symptoms together. He mostly prescribed vitamins and speed by injection and of course lots of different types of sleeping aids. Hitler was often depressed which is also another symptom of PD. But their diagnosis of no mental illness of the Fuhrer was based on the fact that no one said he was mentally ill at the time. What doctor besides one with a death wish would have dared to say the Fuhrer was mentally ill. A few who even implied it, didn't fair too well, as I recall.
The authors do try to document Hitler's history from childhood onward, although there is scant evidence of the early years, as Hitler ordered most of it destroyed. Still the authors research is in great depth and the book is certainly valuable for history buffs interested in the period and/or the man.
