Climate Change and Society, by John Urry

This book explores the significance of human behaviour to understanding the causes and impacts of changing climates and to assessing varied ways of responding to such changes. So far the discipline that has represented and modelled such human behaviour is economics.

By contrast Climate Change and Society tries to place the ‘social’ at the heart of both the analysis of climates and of the assessment of alternative futures. It demonstrates the importance of social practices organised into systems. In the fateful twentieth century various interlocking high carbon systems were established. This sedimented high carbon social practices, engendering huge population growth, increasing greenhouse gas emissions and the potentially declining availability of oil that made this world go round. Especially important in stabilising this pattern was the ‘carbon military-industrial complex’ around the world.

The book goes on to examine how in this new century it is systems that have to change, to move from growing high carbon systems to those that are low carbon. Many suggestions are made as to how to innovate such low carbon systems. It is shown that such a transition has to happen fast so as to create positive feedbacks of each low carbon system upon each other. Various scenarios are elaborated of differing futures for the middle of this century, futures that all contain significant costs for the scale, extent and richness of social life.

Climate Change and Society thus attempts to replace economics with sociology as the dominant discipline in climate change analysis. Sociology has spent much time examining the nature of modern societies, of modernity, but mostly failed to analyse the carbon resource base of such societies. This book seeks to remedy that failing. It should appeal to teachers and students in sociology, economics, environmental studies, geography, planning, politics and science studies, as well as to the public concerned with the long term future of carbon and society.

Review
"Urry challenges sociologists to entertain the social blockages to coming to terms with climate change, social costs of not doing so, and major social rearrangements entailed by a genuine, Copernican ecological turn."
American Journal of Sociology

"A must read for those interested in or working on climate change research and policy making."
Choice

"Deftly drawing together a wide range of materials from Hollywood cinema to the complexity sciences, Urry's analysis combines sobering warnings about potential impending catastrophes, with hints at reasons for optimism about the possible emergence of innovative low carbon lifestyles ... a well-argued, detailed example of what sociologists can do when they turn their attention to climate change."
Sociology

"As debates rage in the UK on the efficiency of wind farms or whether fracking should be given the green light, this book is a timely reminder of how human reliance on the convenience of oil is irrefutably unsustainable."
LSE Review of Books

"A tour de force! Urry shows the centrality of the social - both to comprehend the meaning of the carbon catastrophe that besets us and, thereby, to discover the possibility of a post-carbon society. Essential reading for all."
Michael Burawoy, University of California, Berkeley

"Climate change will affect more than the environment. It will change social institutions as well. In addition to economic science and to the environmental sciences, John Urry gives us insights from the social sciences. It is urgent that we pay attention."
David Stark, Columbia University, author of The Sense of Dissonance: Accounts of Worth in Economic Life

An overview of climate change and sociology
By Ryan R. Sargeant
I have not yet finished this book, but I noticed no one else has provided a review, so I thought I should review the portion I have read.

If you are looking for a book that empowers you to argue convincingly for or against climate change, this probably isn't the right book for you.

This book attempts to address the relationship between social structures and climate change. It doesn't appear to be a description of the underlying science of climate change, but rather a discussion of how societies are designed around a high carbon emissions lifestyle and how climate change will impact these societies in the future.

Many of the arguments presented by the author rely very heavily on arguments presented in other books. The author clearly identifies his sources and often presents several different perspectives regarding a single topic. To some extent, this book feels like an extensive literature review of previously published books. I appreciate the work the author has done to summarize a variety of different arguments in a single, concise book.

The book seems to be intended for an audience with a background/interest in sociology. That is not an area I am very familiar with, but I think the author does a good job accommodating a broader audience. This book has given me much to think about.

Ecological Ethics, by Patrick Curry

In this thoroughly revised and updated second edition of the highly successful Ecological Ethics, Patrick Curry shows that a new and truly ecological ethic is both possible and urgently needed. With this distinctive proposition in mind, Curry introduces and discusses all the major concepts needed to understand the full range of ecological ethics.

He discusses light green or anthropocentric ethics with the examples of stewardship, lifeboat ethics, and social ecology; the mid-green or intermediate ethics of animal liberation/rights; and dark or deep green ecocentric ethics. Particular attention is given to the Land Ethic, the Gaia Hypothesis and Deep Ecology and its offshoots: Deep Green Theory, Left Biocentrism and the Earth Manifesto. Ecofeminism is also considered and attention is paid to the close relationship between ecocentrism and virtue ethics. Other chapters discuss green ethics as post-secular, moral pluralism and pragmatism, green citizenship, and human population in the light of ecological ethics. In this new edition, all these have been updated and joined by discussions of climate change, sustainable economies, education, and food from an ecocentric perspective.

This comprehensive and wide-ranging textbook offers a radical but critical introduction to the subject which puts ecocentrism and the critique of anthropocentrism back at the top of the ethical, intellectual and political agenda. It will be of great interest to students and activists, and to a wider public.

Review

"This significantly expanded second edition is indispensable."
Times Higher Education

"A beautifully written account which is immensely satisfying and informative to read. I have seldom read better."
LSE Politics Blog

"A must read - not only for greenies, but especially for the lay person seeking more information on the subject, both from a theoretical and from a practical point of view."
Ethical Perspectives

"It is easy to see why Curry's book is highly relevant to the modern environmentalist. His writing is accessible and his voice doesn't get in the way of the big topics he covers. Such clarity of expression is of great importance for a book that possesses such intellectual vigour. Moreover, such an approach means this can be read and understood not by academics alone but by anyone wishing to better understand their own reactions to environmental dilemmas as well as other people's."
The Ecologist

"Contributes both an original perspective to the field of environmental philosophy and an accessible comprehensive introductory text for undergraduates."
Newsletter of the International Society for Environmental Ethics

"Curry's book is a significant contribution, and it is wholeheartedly recommended for those who are interested in building a better world."
Mother Pelican

"A profoundly useful and informative guide."
Morning Star

"Ecological Ethics is the best practical introduction to the role of philosophy in understanding the greatest environmental challenges of our time. Everyone who wants to make a difference should read it."
David Rothenberg, New Jersey Institute of Technology and author of Survival of the Beautiful and Why Birds Sing

"An excellent introduction to the different schools of ecological ethics, and as importantly, a strong defense of why a deep-green (or ecocentric) ethics represents the future of ethics if we humans wish to sustain a viable civilization on planet Earth."
Erik Assadourian, Senior Fellow and Director of the Transforming Cultures Project, Worldwatch Institute

"Curry is one of the most creative and important new voices in post-secular, or animistic, environmental ethics."

an excellent book just got a LOT better
By Andrew Mclaughlin
This is the second edition of Ecological Ethics. The first edition was a very good introduction to environmental ethics. This greatly expanded and thoroughly revised 2nd edition raises the bar for all other introductions in this field. It is an excellent survey of approaches to ethics in general, but it is most valuable in discussing the variety of "green" ethical perspectives. Curry discusses well all the major positions. His discussion of the variety pf ecocentric perspectives is remarkably thorough, well informed, and up to date. He uses a well developed ecocentric perspective to discuss many of the ecological issues which we currently must face. Of particular note is that he devotes a chapter to human overpopulation. Excellent as a text or for the general reader.

A ethically good book but some flaws
By Lisa
The author has an important message about how humans and the environment relate and the reasons things are badly wrong, from a philosophical approach. While it's a bit heavy going for the lay person, it's interesting and seems throrough and careful if facile and sesquipedalian.

I'm disappointed since it does not really discuss ethical "questions". It provides an ethical framework for a deep green, eco-centric ethic and describes the current obviously terrible problems, how other ethical systems got us here, and why they are unethical by this eco-centric ethic. But while allowing (I think) that there can be true ethical dilemmas, it doesn't actually consider any such questions: e.g. while there is a discussion of why the world's large population is a problem, it says nothing about the ethically impossible problem of making any change in this area.

The discussion of the ethics of eating animal products is also oversimplifed and sterotyped and doesn't even allow the existence of the real questions involved. This is a subject I've thought about a lot, and while I have my own baises, the author doesn't seem to even consider that eating eggs and milk results very directly in deaths of male chickens and cows. Nor does he differentiate between suffering and death.

I was very bothered when the author descended into name-calling ("insecurely masculine middle-class American bear-hunters"). I've never known a bear-hunter so I can't confirm or refute this statement, but I doubt it is research-based.

This book has valuable points, but these previous two complaints showed up about 1/3 the way through, and I lost my sense of trust in the author; after that, I skimmed the dull parts and haven't really retained much. If reviewing for myself alone I'd give three stars but for other readers without my hot buttons it might be five stars...

a remarkably fine work, lucid and engaging
By David Abram
As an intro teaching text for courses on environmental ethics, this book must now set the standard. As a primer for personal understanding and activism, this work is engaging and mighty useful. It's a finely thought-through overview of much of the field, well-written, passionate and pluralistic. Curry elucidates a broad array of perspectives, organizing them in a fresh and quite interesting way. And while he resuscitates several overlooked or neglected bodies of thought, Curry's book is powerfully contemporary and up to date, delving into several vital currents and undercurrents that aren't even suspected by other texts. "Ecological Ethics" is attentive to multiple nuances, and to matters at once material, political, sensuous, and spiritual; one comes away with a well-rounded sense of what's at stake, and with new insights rising afresh within oneself.

Gender and Popular Culture, by Katie Milestone, Anneke Meyer

This book examines the role of popular culture in the construction of gendered identities in contemporary society. It draws on a wide range of popular cultural forms - including popular music, newspapers and television - to illustrate how femininity and masculinity are produced, represented and consumed.

The authors blend primary and secondary research to offer the reader a balanced yet novel overview of the area. Students are introduced to key theories and concepts in the fields of gender studies and popular culture, which are made accessible and interesting through their application to topical examples such as DJs, binge drinking and computer games.

The book is structured into three clear, user-friendly sections:

1. Production, gender and popular culture: An investigation of who produces popular culture, why gendered patterns occur, and how they impact on content.

2. Representation, gender and popular culture: An examination of how men and women are represented in contemporary popular culture, and how notions of (in)appropriate femininity and masculinity are constructed.

3. Consumption, gender and popular culture: An exploration of who consumes what in popular culture, how gendered consumption relates to space, and what the effects of consuming representations of gender are.

Gender and Popular Culture will be essential reading for students and scholars of media and cultural studies at all levels.

Review

"Presents readers with a rich analysis of the ways in which gender norms, identities and relations are produced in popular culture … Well-written, thoroughly well-structured and accessible."
Times Higher Education textbook guide

"Gender and Popular Culture expertly ties together the last few decades of research on its title themes, then brings these up to date in an impressive, useful manner. Theoretically rich, it is particularly successful in offering original, smart analyses of recent popular cultural phenomena (from Mad Men through men's magazines). This engaging book should find a wide audience among students and teachers of gender studies, popular culture, and media."
Will Straw, McGill University

"This excellent, accessibly written book details how gender is constructed in popular culture through an array of insights into its relationship to production, consumption and representation. It looks at how gender identities are performatively constituted through discourse, power and continuing inequality. This book will prove indispensable to those interested in the cultural politics of gender."
Shirley Tate, Leeds University

"Fresh, accessible, and thorough, Gender and Popular Culture is an excellent introduction and a valuable resource for anyone interested in gender, media, and culture. Milestone and Meyer offer clear and concise surveys of both foundational and current research as well as engaging case studies that model for readers sophisticated analyses of gender in contemporary popular culture."
Mary Celeste Kearney, University of Texas at Austin

Not very useful
By MR MARC RAYMOND
A book clearly intended to work as a textbook for undergraduate media and gender classes, but fails on even that level. Confused and poorly designed and organized.

The Horn of Africa, by Kidane Mengisteab

The Horn of Africa is a deeply troubled region engulfed in three interlocking crises. The first is a security crisis characterized by a range of devastating inter-state and inter-communal conflicts, including civil wars. The second is an economic crisis, evidenced by widespread debilitating poverty, chronic food insecurity, and frequent cycles of famines. The effects of the third - environmental - crisis are all too visible in the droughts, deforestation and desertification ravaging the region. What is more, these three crises are mutually reinforcing locking the region into a cycle of disaster. Conflicts contribute to poverty, which in turn intensifies environmental degradation, leading to scarcities which fuel further conflicts.

In this clear and authoritative guide, Kidane Mengisteab explores the key drivers of instability in the Horn of Africa, suggesting structural and institutional changes that - if implemented - could help lift the region out of crisis. The Horn’s complex crises must be tackled in a comprehensive manner. But, he contends, this can only be achieved if the causes of conflict are addressed head-on. Without peace, the region cannot resolve its economic problems, and nor can it develop the capabilities required to cope with environmental change.

The Horn of Africa will be essential reading for students and scholars in conflict and security studies, as well as anyone with an interest in learning more about the dynamics of this troubled region

Pornography: Structures, Agency and Performance (Key Concepts in Media and Cultural Studies), by Rebecca Sullivan, Alan McKee

Written for a broad audience and grounded in cutting-edge, contemporary scholarship, this volume addresses some of the key questions asked about pornography today. What is it? For whom is it produced? What sorts of sexualities does it help produce? Why should we study it, and what should be the most urgent issues when we do? What does it mean when we talk about pornography as violence? What could it mean if we discussed pornography through frameworks of consent, self-determination and performance?

This book places the arguments from conservative and radical anti-porn activists against the challenges coming from a new generation of feminist and queer porn performers and educators. Combining sensitive and detailed discussion of case studies with careful attention to the voices of those working in pornography, it provides scholars, activists and those hoping to find new ways of understanding sexuality with the first overview of the histories and futures of pornography.

Review
“Here, at last, is an introductory book that grounds the study of pornography in theory and empirical research, discusses it in relation to industry, labour, technology, regulation and performance, and is thoroughly accessible and engaging. Sullivan and McKee’s book will become the key text for anyone researching pornography, as well as those who are interested in sex, sexuality and media.”
Feona Attwood, Middlesex University

“Eschewing simplistic causal models, Sullivan and McKee offer a rich and nuanced exploration of pornographic entertainments. Their account recognizes pornography as part of the vast creative industry: neither good nor bad, neither necessarily transgressive nor oppressive. Instead, they interrogate the multiple valences of sexual representations, their production and consumption, in the twenty-first century. Sullivan and McKee offer an engaging and critical approach to this polarizing topic and, like the very best scholars, open up multiple directions for future research.’”
Clarissa Smith, University of Sunderland
