Pragmatism: An Introduction, by Michael Bacon

Pragmatism: An Introduction provides an account of the arguments of the central figures of the most important philosophical tradition in the American history of ideas, pragmatism. This wide-ranging and accessible study explores the work of the classical pragmatists Charles Sanders Peirce, William James and John Dewey, as well as more recent philosophers including Richard Rorty, Richard J. Bernstein, Cheryl Misak, and Robert B. Brandom.

Michael Bacon examines how pragmatists argue for the importance of connecting philosophy to practice. In so doing, they set themselves in opposition to many of the presumptions that have dominated philosophy since Descartes. The book demonstrates how pragmatists reject the Cartesian spectator theory of knowledge, in which the mind is viewed as seeking accurately to represent items in the world, and replace it with an understanding of truth and knowledge in terms of the roles they play within our social practices.

The book explores the diverse range of positions that have engendered marked and sometimes acrimonious disputes amongst pragmatists. Bacon identifies the themes underlying these differences, revealing a greater commonality than many commentators have recognized. The result is an illuminating narrative of a rich philosophical movement that will be of interest to students in philosophy, political theory, and the history of ideas.

A Century of Pragmatism
By Robin Friedman
Michael Bacon's book, "Pragmatism: an Introduction" (2012) offers a detailed and learned overview of the philosophical movement of pragmatism which Bacon describes as "North America's most significant contribution to Western philosophy". Although primarily associated with North America, pragmatism has an international scope. At least two major figures Bacon discusses, Jurgen Habermas and Huw Price, are not Americans; and Bacon himself is Senior Lecturer in Political Theory, Department of Politics and International Relations, Royal Holloway, University of London.

Bacon has written a brief but dense book, as he covers in 200 pages pragmatic thinkers beginning with Charles Peirce and William James at the close of the 19th Century and concludes with the Australian philosopher, Huw Price and his book written in 2011, "Naturalism without Mirrors" which is new to me. With its largely chronological discussion of philosophers, the book shows well the development and interrelationship of pragmatic themes over the 20th Century and beyond. As the discussion progresses and issues are refined, the book becomes progressively more difficult and more technical.

Bacon's Preface and Introduction to the book offer a lucid overview of pragmatism and its themes. He begins with Charles Peirce's initial formulation of the pragmatic maxim in which he proposed that philosophers examine thought and ideas in terms of the difference they make to human behavior. Peirce wrote: "we come down to what is tangible and practical as the root of every real distinction of thought, no matter how subtile it may be; and there is no distinction of meaning so fine as to consist in anything but a possible difference of practice." Bacon shows that pragmatism constituted a pervasive critique of the Cartesianism which set the themes for modern philosophy. Cartesianism resulted in the sharp vacillations between dogmatism and skepticism that characterize much philosophy. Pragmatist thinkers rejected many of the components of Cartesianism, including its quest for certainty, its foundationalism, its representationalism (holding that there was a dualism between thought and matter and that thought somehow had to mirror reality), its correspondence theory of truth, and more. In its place, pragmatism substituted a human perspectivism, a recognition of the fallible character of human thought, an instrumentalism and a sense of human activity and agency as critical to philosophical understanding. The critique and the pragmatic reorientation of philosophical questions had to be expanded and fleshed out in different ways by different pragmatists, as pragmatism itself straddled uneasily the line between objectivity and relativism.

Bacon tries to show the continuity between the classical American pragmatists, Peirce, James, and Dewey, and the analytic tradition of philosophy which, according to some writers, displaced pragmatism around mid-20th Century. Thus, Bacon follows the first two chapters of his book, which deal with the three classic pragmatists, with a chapter showing the close connection between pragmatism and analysis in three key figures, W.V.O. Quine, Wilfrid Sellars, and Donald Davidson.

Subsequent chapters of the book present philosophers in pairs, with Bacon comparing and contrasting their views. He considers the two leading pragmatic philosophers at the turn of the century, Richard Rorty and Hilary Putnam and their contrasting views about objectivity and relativism. The following chapter examines the German philosopher Habermas and his heavily Kantian approach to pragmatism, comparing it with Richard Bernstein, who takes an approach that draws from many philosophical traditions. A chapter on Susan Haack and Cheryl Misak shows the continued interest in Peirce's pragmatism. The final difficult chapter on rationalism and naturalistic influences on pragmatism contrasts two contemporary thinkers, Robert Brandom and Huw Price.

Bacon's approach focuses on different pragmatic understandings of the nature of truth. He also pays a great deal of attention to pragmatism and political philosophy, particularly is it involves the nature of democracy. Bacon recognizes the differences among pragmatists, but his approach tends of minimize the disagreements in favor of emphasizing the common threads of the pragmatic movement. For example, Bacon tries to show how Peirce and James tried to harmonize what many still see as the basic divide in pragmatism on the nature of truth and on determining what counts as the consequence of a belief. Richard Rorty, criticized by many for his alleged relativism is, in Bacon's account, brought close to the views of many of his critics. Of the thinkers Bacon discusses, two have recently written their own broad overviews of pragmatism. Richard Bernstein's "The Pragmatic Turn" explores themes as well as individual philosophers and emphasizes pragmatism's roots in Kant and Hegel. The Pragmatic Turn Cheryl Misak's "The American Pragmatists" The American Pragmatists (Oxford History of Philosophy) examines many of the thinkers that Bacon discusses, but she is more intent on pointing out differences. Misak has learned a great deal from Peirce, and she is critical of the pragmatism of James, Dewey, and Rorty. Each of these three books is worth reading for their expositions of pragmatism.

Bacon's book will interest readers with a strong philosophical interest and basic philosophical background. The discussion becomes increasingly complex, but that is instructive in its own right in considering the development of pragmatism. The book helped me rethink philosophers I have read while introducing me to contemporary writings on pragmatism.

Review
"The second edition of this book is a timely update to Edwards' first successful edition. Civil Society is arguably the most important and clear contribution to the civil society debate in recent times."
Millennium, Journal of International Studies

"A great introduction and addition to the scholarship of civil society. In the first pages of this book, you get a sense that you are not reading another book about volunteering, or another book about 'doing good'. This is much more than that. It is refreshing, well written and a good critique of scholarship and the civil history of the Western world."
Journal of Sociology

"The second edition of this book is even better than the first and provides an excellent introduction to a complicated concept. The global scope of the book is particularly valuable - by adding material from Africa, the Middle East and Latin America, as well as about transnational civil society, the author has provided a truly comprehensive view of his topic."
Leslie Lenkowsky, Indiana University

"Michael Edwards is to be congratulated. This much revised second edition makes use of the latest scholarship, drawn from a great variety of fields and sources, and exhibits mastery over the relevant scholarly literature. At the same time, the style is clear and expository, with a welcome avoidance of social science jargon. As a result, even the general reader would be invaluably instructed and impressed by this fine book."
Richard Falk, University of California, Santa Barbara

Acclaim for the first edition:

"This is a gem of a book on a massive topic. At barely 50,000 words it can - and should - be read in a day or so, yet it manages to address lucidly and humorously some of the most urgent and compelling issues of the day ... His essay is at once analytically acute and inspirational."
Times Higher Education Supplement

"The best public social science is often created by publicly engaged intellectuals and scholars ... A case in point is Michael Edwards, whose new book, Civil Society ... is rich with examples and case studies"
Harry Boyte, Civic Engagement News

"Mike Edwards is one of the few writers who can bridge the divide between theoretical, empirical and practical concerns ... 'Civil Society' is essentialreading for anyone interested in creating a better world through citizen action."
Alliance Magazine

"Drawing insights from history, philosophy, economics, and politics ... Edwards peels back the layers of logic , assumption, and fact to offer a clear-eyed assessment of civil society's contribution to society at large."
Democracy & Society

"Essential reading for understanding the idea of civil society."
Voluntas

"Combining lucid presentation with thought provoking and coherent theoretical arguments, Edwards establishes a connecting thread between chapters. The wide survey of literature and analysis of the nature and functioning of civil society makes it a comprehensive companion useful for academia and activists with an interest in the field."
Asian Journal of Social Science

"The virtue of Edwards' book is that he approaches civil society from the perspective of how to make it more effective in securing its objectives."
Australian Review of Public Affairs

"Sometimes big things do come in small packages. Michael Edwards's Civil Society fits that description precisely...this compact volume helps the reader understand what 'civil society' is, where the concept came from, and why it is significant in today's globalized socioeconomic-political environment. Most important, Edwards raises questions about popular assumptions, even those long held and often articulated by experts on and advocates for civil society."
The International Center for Not for Profit Law

"Readable and finely nuanced."
Open Democracy

"[T]his ambitious and compact book provides a very useful summary of the ongoing civil society debate and will appeal to a broad audience motivated to contribute in some way or another to 'positive social change'."

Economic Anthropology, by Chris Hann, Keith Hart

This book is a new introduction to the history and practice of economic anthropology by two leading authors in the field. They show that anthropologists have contributed to understanding the three great questions of modern economic history: development, socialism and one-world capitalism. In doing so, they connect economic anthropology to its roots in Western philosophy, social theory and world history.

Up to the Second World War anthropologists tried and failed to interest economists in their exotic findings. They then launched a vigorous debate over whether an approach taken from economics was appropriate to the study of non-industrial economies. Since the 1970s, they have developed a critique of capitalism based on studying it at home as well as abroad.

The authors aim to rejuvenate economic anthropology as a humanistic project at a time when the global financial crisis has undermined confidence in free market economics. They argue for the continued relevance of predecessors such as Marcel Mauss and Karl Polanyi, while offering an incisive review of recent work in this field.

Economic Anthropology is an excellent introduction for social science students at all levels, and it presents general readers with a challenging perspective on the world economy today.

Review
"This is a 'big book', tackling big questions in deceptively simple prose."
Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute

"Both authors draw on their considerable ethnographic experience to offer a rich run-through of economic anthropology, and trace its intersection between the primary disciplines of economics and anthropology and against thematic currents such as Marxism and feminism."
LSE Review of Books

"Educational and intellectually stimulating, it will benefit both economic sociologists and economists."
Revue Française de Socio-économie

"Offers a methodological and analytic platform which could make this field more relevant for policy making, create a more fruitful dialogue with economics, economic sociology and history, and make scholarly work more accessible to the wider public."
European Economic Sociology Newsletter

"Hann and Hart offer the most sophisticated history of economic anthropology that I have seen. Using a humanistic perspective, their descriptions of the 'prehistory' of economic anthropology and of the socialist and postsocialist eras are neatly joined to an account of research in the twentieth century."
Stephen Gudeman, University of Minnesota

"Now that neoliberal economic theories are becoming as discredited as state-socialist ones, Chris Hann and Keith Hart set out the case for 'human economics' focused on addressing both the moral and material needs of humanity - market as well as non-market. This is a brilliantly executed work which breathes new list into both disciplines - Anthropology and Economics. At a time when national and global economic thinking and policies seem moribund, this intervention could not be timlier."
Don Robotham, City University of New York

An introduction to economic anthropology
By M. A. Krul
"Economic Anthropology" by Hann & Hart seeks to introduce the subject of anthropological analysis of modern and historical economic themes in a simple and straightforward way. Clearly aimed at readers unfamiliar with the subject entirely, it provides a cursory, if systematic historical overview of the different schools in the field and their historical relationship to each other. The authors discuss the origins of the concept of the economy, the views of Marx and Polanyi, the formalist-substantivist debate, the turns to culture and anthropology of the West and the feminist critique, and so forth. There is also room for a brief discussion of economic anthropology's relationship to development economics and to economic theory more generally, especially of the socialist kind.

It is not easy to summarize such a potentially massive topic as the overlap between anthropology and similar social science approaches and historical theories of the economy, and the authors are to be lauded for their clear and concise treatment of the topic. However, the book is marred by a number of greater and lesser flaws, which make it fail to live up to its potential. In general, "Economic Anthropology" is often too cursory an overview, and the treatment even of major authors ends up giving them short shrift in terms of their significance, which would make it difficult for a complete newcomer to judge the relevance or irrelevance of historical theories for current practice. Secondly, the work is mired in an annoyingly superficial liberal outlook: the authors go out of their way to defend the significance of 'the market' and 'money' throughout all societies, and their treatment of socialist economies is quite inept. It is in particular bizarre to see in a book of this kind a highly flawed and superficial defense of the current Chinese state-led economy as the way forward between the poles of too much market and too much state, itself a fairly obsolete dichotomy - whatever modern China is, it certainly isn't a revival of the "human economy", as the authors' rosy view suggests. The authors' obsession with the internet as a new all-changing paradigm for politics is also disappointing. Finally, the book's judgements occasionally lead it to make outright absurd claims: Janos Kornai was not a "market fundamentalist" (128); Marx did not "restrict the definition of capital to its form as money" (144), nor did he argue that "wage slavery under capitalism was fundamentally similar to feudal serfdom". One can also not refute rational choice theories by using evidence of emotions through brain scanners(!) (93).

That said the book also has some clear positive points that stand out, apart from its easy and concise overview. The authors include some good discussions of the practical shortcomings of formalist approaches in economic anthropology, and their continual emphasis on the importance of constructing a more universalizing theory, capable of joining up with the other social sciences, rather than sticking to localized fieldwork and thick cultural descriptions is highly welcome. As Hann & Hart point out, the very existence of an economic anthropology has at times come into question because of excessive particularism or formalist problematics; it is now time for it to join a better economic history than the new institutional kind and a better economics than the neoclassical kind in a new project for the historical social sciences.

Spike Lee's America, by David Sterritt

Spike Lee has directed, written, produced, and acted in dozens of films that present an expansive, nuanced, proudly opinionated, and richly multifaceted portrait of American society. As the only African-American filmmaker ever to establish a world-class career, Lee has paid acute attention to the experiences of racial and ethnic minorities. But white men and women also play important roles in his movies, and his interest in class, race, and urban life hasn’t prevented his films from ranging over broad swaths of the American scene in stories as diverse as the audiences who view them. His defining trait is a willingness to raise hard questions about contemporary America without pretending to have easy answers; his pictures are designed to challenge and provoke us, not ease our minds or pacify our emotions. The opening words of his 1989 masterpiece Do the Right Thing present his core message in two emphatic syllables: “Wake up!”

Spike Lee’s America is a vibrant and provocative engagement not only with the work of a great filmmaker, but also with American society and politics.

Review
"Though he comes to praise Lee's oeuvre, Sterrit is even-handed with both critics and director."
The Independent

"Perfectly readable, mercifully free of cliched characterisations of the director as an 'angry black man' - and informative enough to recommend as a reference tool for Spike beginners."
Sight & Sound

"Writing perceptively about class, race and recent US history (as well as the movies) Sterritt steers refreshingly far from the academic waffle that can plague this kind of book, and builds a reasoned portrait of one of America's punchiest commentators."
Total Film

"An optimal introduction to the career of one of America’s most prominent filmmakers."
25fps

"Not just an interesting read, the book is also a great educational resource for film students, and a truly excellent map for exploring one of the major genres of African-American film-making."
Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television

"My admiration for Spike Lee has always been substantial, but thanks to this book I now admire him even more. Although David Sterritt does not blink at the many dilemmas the films present, he has greatly enriched our appreciation as well as our understanding of Spike Lee's cinema."
Krin Gabbard, Stony Brook University

"Since his filmmaking debut in the mid-eighties, Spike Lee has become one of the most influential African American directors of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Through clear and cogent prose, David Sterritt also illustrates what makes Lee one of the finest American filmmakers working today."
Paula Massood, Brooklyn College

Doin' the write thing...
By mateo52
While I am loath to admit it, I always benefit - eventually - when some nature of external stimuli compels me into a state of reflexiveness. This time, it was David Sterritt's book that prompted me to hazard self-examination. When I finished his submission, I was disenchanted with many of his postulations regarding Spike Lee's body of work to date; as a film critic and academician he has the credentials to analyze, dissect, and interpret the product of Lee's screenwriting and directorial vision. What was most unsettling is in a copious number of instances, it felt as though he and I had watched entirely different films, to the point I was motivated to queue up a few I have on DVD and seek out a couple of others on streaming services.

I was further reminded of a discussion I had a few years ago with an academic who was ebullient about the writing skills of a new African American author ( at this point I don't even remember who it was that lead to me cooking for myself for a few days) she had discovered as though he was first to write in a particular voice and I pointed out a few predecessors that she was not familiar with because of blind spots in her field of literary vision who may have informed the newer writers' work. She was irritated by my contradiction of her insights just as what much of what Sterritt expounds here fails to correlate with how I would like to believe I see Lee's films...even after I looked at a couple of my old reviews and discovered what was really bothering me was somebody else criticizing the family. Besides, if you get the teams Earl Monroe played for wrong, as far as I am concerned all credibility is lost anyway.

As a title under the Polity Publishing "America through the Lens" series, it appears the book is intended for a general readership rather than an academically focused audience but either way, if he had used dialectic, eponymous and `Brechtian' a couple times more I may have been inspired slap myself into senility with purloined library thesauri. Sterritt's effort which I saw largely supportive of Lee's past works progresses in chronological order from his graduate student films while attending NYU to his most recent theatrical release as of the book's publication date, with greatest emphasis on his earlier films, She's Gotta Have it, School Daze, Do The Right Thing, and X. Later films that the author deems aimed at a wider audience segment are noted but the depth of analysis is clearly less intensive.

It's interesting that as much as Sterritt referenced what he saw as Lee's tendency or intent to address a multiplicity of issues via dialectical juxtaposition, the author tended to employ the same format in his exposition by highlighting commentary from other media critics as well as social scientists and theorists in cultural studies. The primary weakness was his propensity to extemporize his personal impressions from what consistently demonstrated a myopic view, an outlook he occasionally acknowledged as influenced by his own life experience wherein nuances Lee may have addressed in his crafting of a screenplay or directorial path could not be fully embraced by someone coming from a significantly diverse background, writing from a historical position of privilege, arguably incapable of getting in touch with areas of ethnic experience beyond his breath of visceral experience.

While I found numerable comments in the text provocative and occasionally down right annoying, taken as a filmography, the book is a worthwhile reference source. Yet, in greater number of instances, what I ended thinking to myself was, "this guy just can't understand," and even when it appears he might, it comes off as paternalistic.

BADLY over-written, you are better off just browsing the amazon product pages
By Love Thy Enemy
simply a filmography with synopsis, this book is badly over written. Any author who uses the word eponymous more than once in a work is really pushing it; here we stumble across it in every section, blazing like like a look-how-great-I-am badge on a tourist, even contorting the term to "semi-eponymous" to signify that Son of Sam somehow resembles Summer of Sam.

You are really better off browsing the amazon product pages of this great American director.

Here you find only the synopsis of each film with the occasional interjections of the author's lame opinions based on box office, with the wisdom of Roger Ebert occasionally stolen.

Please peruse this sample sentence whic runs a dozen lines in the published text:

The villains in the Summer of Sam are not only the .44 Caliber Killer and the witch hunters who stomp Ritchie; they are also the sensationalistis mass media that whip up fears to boost their profits, the kings of commerce who peddle cheap sex and porn, the looters who pillage BRooklyn and Harlem during the blackout, and the entire moral climate of the age, which Lee pictures as a virtually anarchic bedlam that encourages everything from the money-fueled licentiousness of a Manhattan sex club to the belligerently sexist behavior of pretty much every male character."

SOMEBODY QUICKLY BUY THIS MAN A FULL STOP PERIOD!
or hire a copy editor.

He slows down. The sentence immediately following this one runs a mere six lines of text.

PLEASE LOOK UP EVERY SPIKE LEE FILM ON AMAZON and get it.

Especially the one most trashed here, a great allegory and multifaceted fable for our times, She Hate Me

and all of the documentaries starting with 4 Little Girls and When the Levees Broke: A Requiem In Four Acts.

Rare historical value although flow is not good
By A dad
I'm disappointed with the flow of this book. The discussions of movies was intellectual, as expected, but lacking cohesion. It's not just that it doesn't have cohesion in the classic sense. It bored me. And I don't bore easily - not at all.

The redeeming dimension of the book is the sheer amount of relevant film history that Lee loaded it with. In fact, I can't imagine how people come by some of this information as it feels like insider knowledge that nobody would dare expound upon in written form.

Comparative Peace Processes, by Jonathan Tonge

Choice Outstanding Academic Title for 2015

The term ?peace process? is now widely used to describe attempts to manage and resolve conflict. As the nature of conflict has changed, so the range of available tools for producing peace has grown. Alongside a plethora of political actions, there is now a greater international awareness of how peace can be brokered and policed. As a result, peace processes now extend well beyond the actuality of ceasefires and an absence of war to cover legacy issues of victims, truth and reconciliation.

This book expertly examines the practical application of solutions to conflict. The first part analyses various political means of conflict management, including consociational power-sharing, partition, federalism and devolution. The second explores the extent to which these political formulas have been applied - or ignored - in a wide range of conflicts including Bosnia-Herzegovina, Northern Ireland, Israel-Palestine, Lebanon, the Basque Region and Sri Lanka.

Comparative Peace Processes combines optimism with a realist approach to conflict management, acknowledging that the propensity of dominant states to engage in political experimentation is conditioned by the state of conflict. It will be a valuable resource for anyone interested in general theories of political possibilities in peace processes and the practical deployment of political ideas in conflict zones.

Review
Choice Outstanding Academic Title for 2015

"This excellent book fills a real gap in the literature. In it, Tonge guides the reader expertly through the complex ideas and histories of peace processes whilst maintaining a critical, and formidable, oversight."
Kristian Brown, University of Ulster

"This is a rigorously researched, clear-sighted and thoughtfully argued analysis of comparative peace processes. Tonge does not shy away from the painful realities of the conflicts covered or the failures of political intervention, but he inspires us to believe that we are capable of learning from the mistakes of the past."
Feargal Cochrane, University of Kent

"Professor Tonge has put together a highly accessible and highly relevant work that asks urgent questions around achieving peace and making it stick. Drawing on a wide range of examples, he unpacks the political deal making that lies behind peace processes."
Roger Mac Ginty, University of Manchester

Jon Tonge is Professor of Politics at Liverpool University and the co-editor of the Journal Parliamentary Affairs.

Brazil: Reversal of Fortune, by Alfred P. Montero

Once deemed a “dysfunctional” democracy with a “feckless” set of political institutions and a “drunk” economy, today’s Brazil has undergone a complete reversal of fortune. Now in its third decade of democracy, the economy is blossoming and large-scale development projects are underway, including the exploitation of massive, off-shore oil reserves, a nationwide effort to modernize infrastructure, and preparations for the hosting of the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics. Inequality and poverty are reducing and even Brazil’s political institutions are more governable and are producing a higher-quality democracy than most observers once thought possible.

Alfred P. Montero’s timely and wide-ranging book explores Brazil’s amazing “turnaround” - from improvements to the working of its political institutions and judiciary, to the renewal of economic growth, the advent of innovative social policy, and the emergence of a new foreign policy agenda. Unpacking both overly optimistic as well as pessimistic views of Brazilian politics and development, Montero offers illuminating insights into the country’s transformation and its increasing significance on the international stage.

Review
‘This book will delight political scientists interested in evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of what Montero calls the "new Brazil"’
Politique Etrangère.

"This timely book is a must read for anyone looking for a nuanced understanding of Brazil's political, economic and social development over the last twenty years."
Anthony Pereira, Director, Brazil Institute, King’s College London

"Brazil is the best single-volume introduction to contemporary Brazilian affairs. A seasoned observer, Montero dissects the remarkable renaissance of Brazil since the mid-1990s, asking whether recent gains in governability and human welfare are sustainable. The answer is cautiously positive, but Montero successfully highlights the many unanswered questions posed by the new Brazilian model of development."
Timothy J. Power, University of Oxford

"A masterful treatment of both Brazil's rise as an emerging power and its ongoing challenges of development. It will be essential reading for anyone interested in understanding how Brazil overcame its seemingly intractable barriers to economic and political development."
Peter Kingstone, King’s College London

About the Author
Alfred P. Montero is Professor and chair of Political Science at Carleton College, and the author of numerous books and journal articles on Brazil and Latin American politics. He is also associate editor of Latin American Politics and Society.

"Not for beginners."
By J. Green
I spent two years in Brazil back in '87 and '88, when hyperinflation was just getting started. The country had recently been democratized following years of military rule and political corruption was rampant (on par with what we have in California now, I'd guess). And yet, even as the US went through a couple of economic bubbles (first the "dot-com" crash, then the sub-par mortgage crash), Brazil seemed to do just fine. I still have many friends there and it was gratifying to see them enjoying a better standard of living - even though they tell me corruption is still as rampant as ever.

Montero quotes the famous Brazilian composer, Tom Jobim ("The Girl From Ipanema") saying "Brazil is not for beginners," and neither is this book. It's a good study but more on the level of advanced college economics classes (I minored in economics many years ago). Nonetheless, he examines the period from 1985 to present and how democratization has changed and made the economy more stable. He argues that government still suffers from corruption and there is still great poverty, but the Real plan helped to tame many of the uncertainties that lead to the hyperinflation problems. Strides have been made in pension, health, and education policies but most reforms still favor the priveledged, and yet there is still much potential for further social reform and democratization. Overall, this is a very detailed and comprehensive look at the Brazilian economy, but the writing is also dense and highly academic. I found myself having to re-read many passages to absorb the message, and sometimes just to be able to understand what he's saying. Like other Polity books, the scholarship is exceptional, but the audience may be a bit narrow.

AN EXCELLENT BOOK ON THE NEW BRAZIL!
By Professor Emeritus P. Bagnolo
BRAZIL
REVERSAL OF FORTUNE
By Alfred. P. Montaro

I was very interested in this book because more than 100 years ago some family members migrated from Ital to Brazil and became wealthy creating a high end retail store chain. I was drawn to the difference with which Brazil handled its emerging from a police/military state. Since 1985 Brazil has emphasized a remarkable turn about of the wisdom of interior growth before any other type of growth, to solidify a sustainable nation and its people, as FDR and others did since until about the 1980's and as later grew much worse as the most recent few administrations of America either intentionally destroyed, or did so out of vast ignorance and greed. I did this partially because the author pointed out mistakes by "Washington" against the ideas followed by Brazil, and I agree with him.

I followed that rise of Brazil, from a military/Police State to a thriving, but certainly not perfect, Democracy. What I saw since the transition from the Military State, to a Democracy and a world power as fourth largest economy. I watched as it rose from the ashes of non-freedom to a large and prosperous nation, and as I watched it go from near fascism in many countries, which, sank them
deeper into something somewhat approaching a Police/Military State, Brazil was, but, which has since is become enlightened.

Not that Brazil is completely out of the darkness, there are still a great many poor (at one time 60% of the citizenry were in poverty) and their economy was a problem, as it, like the USA was sent in the wrong direction by several successive presidents whose knowledge of great and sustainable economic growth is within its own nation, not in outsourcing and exporting. Now Brazil understands that and is working upon and being successful thus far at homeland internal growth. To do that however, they needed to raise salaries of the many poor, and they did pass new minimum wage increases which, moved its great growth period forward, while many other nations on the west over many over several decades, began a vicious New World Order rampage of destabilization of smaller nations in a fools gold series of errors.

Meanwhile Brazil is busy creating sustainable domestic growth, which is not only a better plan, but a safer one, as Brazilians have gone from bust to Boom, as all around the world most countries are going erroneously from Boom to Bust by utilizing Hitlerian track such as "Austerity.

But Brazil's plans required also sustainable Democracy with a highly improved Governability, and that has been building strongly since 1993. With that however, is a thing now lacking in many so-called "democracies", what is needed in nations which pompously brag about and with hubris, is that the are "Extraordinary", "Too Big To Fail", turning out to be "Too Big To Jail", which brags are worse than average and which leadership the leadership is corrupt, less bright, and poorly failing. Brazil's manufacturing out put has outgrown that of many larger nations, and is still growing.

Brazil, has seen the light and is on a roll, however, it still has a long upward road with many things to overcome. There are always a few setbacks but keeping ones eye on the ball, is the path to success and the book indicates how Brazil is solidly moving with care, empathy, and with job creating success as did the USA since the mid-1930's and especially in the 1940ies, but Brazil has done so, by avoiding the wars that are dragging other "democracies", down a hole from which they may never rebound. Brazil has not participated in war for decades, and has saved trillions by so doing, now it is venturing build a solid well paid middle class, and that is one of its foremost goals along with Accountability, Democratic excellence, and eradication of corruption as it is doing, now, which other larger economies are not doing, and are in fact, slumping with leadership straight out of the 13th century.

In essence presidents of the "Neo-Liberal era" Sarney's, Collor's, and Cardoso's liberality of trade, Privatization to contain growth of fiscal debt. One of their best kept secrets was to maintain many statist industries, and had America left some of theirs intact (Like AT&T) there would never have been such a disparity between the upper and middle classes. Greed/avarice in other larger nations of a fascist nature as well as constant wars, massive prisons, privatizations, is blowing blew the covers off stability, of many western nations which has have crushed the dollar. Not so in Brazilian Coinage. It must be understood that "Brazil did not adopt the new model known as neo-develupmentalism, but that it continued "statism".

One great thing the new leaders of Brazil are doing which other world leaders are ignoring, is cutting the massive spread of avarice and criminal corporate conspiracy in this way: I have sat on boards of directors of corporations and charities and I have resigned from several because of what I saw as corruption in which, the CEO's of the XYZ corporation packed the Boards of Directors on ABC corporation with friends, relatives and current executives of their corporation, and in return the ABC Corporation similarly packed the board of directors of the XYZ corporation. Thus, they flooded each other's executives with massive raises and bonuses, thus legally stealing from investors and employees. This and this alone is crime under the US RICO ACT and is responsible for the bloated differences of inequality. However, in nations like Sweden for instance the average CEO makes about 25 times the income of the average employee. In America and a few other countries, it has risen to from 500 - 2500 times the income of the average employee, thus stealing legally from investors, shareholders and employees, as mentioned before.

Brazil has gotten past that mistake; will the rest of the world. As in opposition in many countries political parties are trying to Privatize Social benefits, while Brazil is emphasizing strengthening Pensions and other annuity benefits, thus enlightened, with Judeo/Christian empathy, success is following the lack of avarice and coveting and with the knowledge that if the discretionary income of all level increases at the same rate, thus creating sustainable wealth for all, which are willing to work for it. In Happy nations like Sweden, Norway and Denmark, there is no inequality of income, no poverty and diminishing crime. Brazil's new Paradigm is closing the gap and making it easier to discover great new minds/ideas coming from all social levels. Allowing the brightest to move upward within the company.

In the case of Foreign policy, Brazils attitude is not arrogant, nor aggressive. It sees itself as a regional power, but has NO desire to bully neighbors. She remains steadfast in a new form of humility. This is not to say that multilateralism does not still reside within the hearts of some. Before the spying upon everyone including trade partners like Brazil, by the USA began, terms between the two nations were close, not so much at this point, as Brazil's voice over those crimes were heard and loudly by the world. Brazil is seeking and attaining a growing trade with local nations, but its trade with the USA and the European Union has fallen from 60% of exports and 40% of imports ton of late to 31 % of exports and 36 % of imports. However with China has increased drastically in recent years. One of the most remarkable things that took place was was that this whole rise was initiated by a Socialist President, elected by industrialists!

In terms of the NEW Brazil it has upped considerable non-contributory money to the poor, minimum wages have increased greatly, along with viable efforts to close the gap between the classes, and so far it is making remarkable steps in that direction.

This is a very strong study by Alfred P. Montero and very thorough complete with charts and detail delivery of information.
I give it five (5) stars

The New Brazil, Improved But Imperfect
By Antigone Walsh
This is a scholarly examination of the evolution of Brazil from military state to budding democracy and economic power. There are important lessons for other countries seeking economic and social stability. The first is keeping the focus at home. Don't interfere with other countries. Don't be lured into costly and ultimately unwinnable wars. Invest in your country and people and resist the temptation to outsource. Economic success results in peace and security. This is not to say that Brazil is without problems. Corruption is like a cancer yet to be excised. Poverty has yet to be eradicated and the country is still growing into democracy. But the progress is impressive and the discourse enlightening.

However, I found the dry, pedantic writing difficult. It reads like a term paper where the author attempts to impress by using every multi-syllabic word he knows. The end result is boring, tiresome and a chore to read. Which is a pity because the discussion is important and interesting.

The Politics of the Body: Gender in a Neoliberal and Neoconservative Age, by Alison Phipps

Winner of the 2015 FWSA Book Prize

The body is a site of impassioned, fraught and complex debate in the West today. In one political moment, left-wingers, academics and feminists have defended powerful men accused of sex crimes, positioned topless pictures in the tabloids as empowering, and opposed them for sexualizing breasts and undermining their ?natural? function. At the same time they have been criticized by extreme-right groups for ignoring honour killings and other ?culture-based? forms of violence against women. How can we make sense of this varied terrain?

In this important and challenging new book, Alison Phipps constructs a political sociology of women?s bodies around key debates: sexual violence, gender and Islam, sex work and motherhood. Her analysis uncovers dubious rhetorics and paradoxical allegiances, and contextualizes these within the powerful coalition of neoliberal and neoconservative frameworks. She explores how ?feminism? can be caricatured and vilified at both ends of the political spectrum, arguing that Western feminisms are now faced with complex problems of positioning in a world where gender often comes second to other political priorities.

This book provides a welcome investigation into Western politics around women?s bodies, and will be particularly useful to scholars and upper-level students of sociology, political science, gender studies and cultural studies, as well as to anyone interested in how bodies become politicized.

Review

"Phipps explores the ways in which modern-day feminist beliefs intersect with and may even be appropriated by neoliberal and neoconservative agendas … As Phipps observes, unless accompanied by structural change, ‘choice’ is too often only meaningful for a small elite."
New Statesman

"Anybody who wants to know about contemporary political confusions about the body should start here"
Times Higher Education

"Thought-provoking, caustic, and self-reflexive, as its wide range of themes reflect both breadth and depth in analytic scope."
Gender and Society

“The Politics of the Body offers valuable insights into the insidious ways in which neo-conservative and neo-liberal agendas shape even our most intimate thinking and behaviour… A rich and provocative set of arguments that could inform efforts ‘to revitalise the feminist politics of the body, reconnecting the personal with the political, instead of positioning it as an end in itself’”
Gender and Development

''This is a brave and important book. Beautifully written, cogently argued and with vivid up-to-date examples, it shows how a neoliberal and neoconservative politics is rewriting our common sense about bodies. A must-read for students and scholars of gender, sociology and cultural studies.''
Rosalind Gill, City University London

''Alison Phipps revises the old feminist understanding of “victimhood” in the context of neoliberal and neoconservative politics. Her analysis shows how mythologies about victims not only prevail but also are spurred on by the political and economic agendas of contemporary capitalism.''
Kristin Bumiller, Amherst College
