Femen, by Femen, Galia Ackerman

'Ukraine is not a brothel!' This was the first cry of rage uttered by Femen during Euro 2012.

Bare-breasted and crowned with flowers, perched on their high heels, Femen transform their bodies into instruments of political expression through slogans and drawings flaunted on their skin. Humour, drama, courage and shock tactics are their weapons.

Since 2008, this 'gang of four' – Inna, Sasha, Oksana and Anna – has been developing a spectacular, radical, new feminism. First in Ukraine and then around the world, they are struggling to obtain better conditions for women, but they also fight poverty, discrimination, dictatorships and the dictates of religion. These women scale church steeples and climb into embassies, burst into television studios and invade polling stations. Some of them have served time in jail, been prosecuted for ‘hooliganism’ in their home country and are banned from living in other states. But thanks to extraordinary media coverage, the movement is gaining imitators and supporters in France, Germany, Brazil and elsewhere.

Inna, Sasha, Oksana and Anna have an extraordinary story and here they tell it in their own words, and at the same time express their hopes and ambitions for women throughout the world.

Review
"Femen and Everyday Sexism are two breakthrough movements to emerge in recent times, and they bring their own distinct 'manifestos' in book form. Both confirm that feminism is no longer a dirty word among twentysomethings but also that the ideology manifests itself differently from their campaigning Second Wave predecessors."
The Independent

"With Femen, we are dealing with something new ... Its activists are charting a new route for public discourse about women and religion, and making it an unabashedly universal discourse, venturing into realms where they may be hated, and they may yet pay a high price for this. But that they have gotten people talking, even shouting and crying, is undeniable, and it is good; only through debate and discussion, sometimes painful, often unsettling, will we progress."
The Atlantic

"Femen’s aims are straightforward, broad and radical. A war on patriarchy on three fronts, calling for an end to all religions, dictatorship and the sex industry."
The Guardian

"Part manifesto part biography this is Ukranian protest group FEMEN in their own words. Currently exiles in France, the four key members outline their objectives and sextremist tactics. A timely look at their 'non-violent but highly aggressive' topless brand of feminist activism."
Diva Magazine

"This account will inspire activists and inform scholars for generations."
Publishers Weekly

A fearless search for social justice
By Trouble
I don’t know why it is that in order to make a point, women have to take off their shirts, but it is surely entertaining. You only have to look at history to understand that women’s rights and our fight for equality, always takes second place to whatever else happens. And now our attention is drawn away from women again: watching the crisis and invasion of Ukraine by the Russians and their proxies brings home the reality of the second world.

The manifesto here is a little extreme. Yes, it would be justice to eradicate sharia. I tend to think smaller more direct goals are worth working toward. It is the absence of goals, like the whole Wall Street debacle, that seems to defeat its own lack of purpose.

It’s hard not to temper some of their denunciations. Some women like a burqa and wear one by choice. Once you get into a burqa, it is hard to get out.

On the other breast, it is astonishing to see how effective these ‘little girls’ have been in voicing their opinions. These women studied their ‘place’ and they studied history to learn how to effect change, how to fight for rights.

It is an amazing story.

Eye-Opening
By The Invisible Pam
Manifesto

"In the beginning was the body, the sensation the woman has of
her own body, the joy of it's lightness and freedom. Then came
injustice, so harsh that it is felt with the body; injustice
deprives the body of it's mobility, paralyses it's movements,
and soon you are hostage to that injustice. Then you push your
body into battle against the injustice, mobilizing each cell
for the war against the world of patriarchy and humiliation."

FEMEN makes a timely appearance as issues of gender are bubbling to the top of American political agendas -- yet again. The line between an employer's rights and those of the employee come to mind. That these aren't simple issues is demonstrated by the fact that as a society we are having to push the debate up to the Supreme Court, because there is no general consensus.

Because of current politics and because the women of FEMEN are so radical and outspoken I was interested in what the founders of this movement had to say for themselves. I hoped to pushed beyond my comfort zone. To be helped to see what they caused these four women to begin this new style of feminism.

I became even more intrigued as I read. As my ignorance of social environment of Ukraine and Russia became apparent, I recognized parallels to the limited options women in the USA had in 1950's. And I realized how stifling this must have been to these strong, intelligent young women.

If you want to understand their roots, consider that they think about perestroika the way they do about the Soviet imposed faux-famine of 1932-3 --which effected the genocide of 6 million people. What the communist bureaucrats didn't entirely crush, the capitalization of the USSR did.

And part of this destruction was what happened to Ukraine. It became a sex capital, and under the watchful eye of the government Ukrainian women were being sold and sold out.

This book is brilliantly written. The introductory section gives an easy introduction to the politics of the Ukraine.

What follows is their political stance. I-myself am a capitalist, while they are communists in the old Marxian sense. That did not keep them from opening my eyes though, for it's clearly true that women are the first to suffer from poverty and the last to recover. So what they said could not be denied in my capitalist world.

I don't think those with a strong political bent will get much from this book. The Femen are far-far left leaning, and what's the point of reading something if you it is only going to make you froth and spit, and elevate your blood pressure. Just pass this by.

For those able to look pass any politics they might not agree with, there are some thought provoking ideas here, and some interesting material that explains what drives these women.

Inspiring Women To Take A Stand
By Wilhelmina Zeitgeist
"Femen" is a power packed book about this feminist movement that sprang up in Ukraine to protest and start a war on patriarch and an end to religions, dictatorships, and the sex industry which hold women back or captive in society. This is a book that will fire up the need for us all to rally against the uneven treatment given to women in comparison to men. The stories of members of Femen who are living in France, exiled from their native Ukraine, spoke frankly about the beginning of the movement and what transpired in their highly publicized protests over the years. They also speak about where the movement's direction is pointed now which includes the Middle East.

I am grateful for this book as it opened my eyes to the actions of women living in another part of the world who are taking decisive action against the accepted norms of inequality, abuse, and mistreatment of women around the world. It's a book that made me feel proud to be a woman. We need more women out there getting angry and working to level out the playing field once and for all.
