Roger Chartier is a renowned scholar whose expertise is the cultural significance of books: from their birth in manuscript form as an author's initial creative act to their malleability in the hands of editors, proofreaders and illustrators as they revise that original vision into something new and collaborative to their ultimate production in the hands of printers, bookbinders and other artisans who manufacture the final cultural artifact we call a book. Chartier is fascinated by books as a collaborative creative enterprise whose cultural significance may be found in their unique identity as a reflection of the era in which they are made. Books are infinitely more than a mere collection of pages between front and back covers; they are truly the embodiment of the spirit and thought of an age.
The Authors Hand and the Printers Mind is a magisterial collection of scholarly essays that will appeal to cultural anthropologists, antiquarians, writers, philosophers, book collectors and anyone else whose love of books requires constant feeding and nurturing. This is a wonderful, exciting book

This is a wonderful, exciting book. It reminds me of certain academic books that open up aspects of the world of which I'd previously been unaware. It isn't so much that Chartier breaks down one's understanding of the world as he makes you aware of aspects of which you'd been previously unaware. He puts me in mind of writers like Roland Barthes or Norbert Elias or Arnaldo Momigliano or Keith THomas. He doesn't merely inform you but helps transform the way you think about the world.
The biggest thing that Chartier did for me in reading his essays was grasp the degree to which I had superimposed modern publishing upon early publishing. Even today one cannot assume that the published version of a book is what the author intended, but usually this consists merely of adjusting a title or rearranging chapters, but Chartier shows that in the earliest days of publishing this went to completely differently degrees. This is academic writing that is not merely educational, but a heck of a lot of fun.

Not for the bedtime reader

This is a scholarly read and may be difficult to take in when too much is read at once. I had to readjust my focus when tackling this book, but Roger Chartier does make some very valid points in these twelve essays.
Chartier covers several aspects of the printed word from Midde Ages to present, using European references. There's a new topic in each essay. In the first essay, for example, "Listen to the Dead with your Eyes" he asks us to imagine the changes the written word undergoes over the years, "given to be read in forms that are no longer those in which the readers of the past encountered them" (6). This is especially true today, when everything is now digitalized. Only privileged people learned to read and write, so it makes sense that the written word was about "redoubtable and feared powers" (21) that could easily be changed in whatever form in the print shop, thus altering the original text
Western Europe, which is the focus of this book, was enamored by its big writers: Shakespeare and Cervantes being the two that Chartier mentions the most. Their written words have gone through so many changes over the years, but it's not just through translations, but through changes in stage modifications and modernized technology. Chartier questions if these changes are keeping in line with the author's authentic text. This seems overkill to me, as it's the message that counts, and it's the message's meaning that may change relevance over time.
There are many other aspects that Chartier covers, such as translated text, modern text in digital form, etc. While the reading is very scholarly and the reader should refrain from reading too much, there are some good tidbits in these essays.
