Paul Ricoeur (1913-2005) is widely recognized as one of the most distinguished philosophers of the twentieth century. He taught for many years at the University of Chicago. His many works include Freud and Philosophy, Time and Narrative and Oneself as Another.

This Book Finally Spoke to Me, Profoundly

Ricoeur is not the easiest writer to follow at times. And the early chapters of this volume, especially the first, "The Problem of Hermeneutics" (1-44) is no easy read, but I guess it establishes the frame for the rest of the volume. If you get bogged down in the first chapter, just keep at it; it gets better and clearer I promise. Afterall, Ricoeur himself insists, "to explain more is to understand better" (11).
And maybe this statement is at the heart of Ricoeur's ideas of interpretation and hermeneutics.
Get ready for a journey that by the end is rewarding, wholesome, and maybe even winsome.
I think the question Ricoeur raises in his ultimate chapter "Salvation Myths and Contemporary Reason" (153-170), is perhaps the most profound and relevant conversation need for the so-called "postmodern" age: "Can there still be a horizon of expectation" when there is no Hope (169). Again, a powerfully relevant question when an agenda of hope at the political level has arguably failed or at least painfully disappointed.
This slim volume, the second work by Ricoeur from Polity Press recently, is well worth the time and effort to make it through to the end. It is a terrific continuation of Ricoeur's lesser-known lectures and writings from the earlier _On Psychoanalysis_ (2012). I wish I had had these two volumes at my service during my earliest forays into understanding the profound (and welcoming) world of Paul Ricoeur.
