Being, Essence and Substance in Plato and Aristotle, by Paul Ricoeur

Paul Ricoeur (1913-2005) was one of the outstanding French philosophers of the 20th century and his work is widely read in the English-speaking world. This unique volume comprises the lectures that Ricoeur gave on Plato and Aristotle at the University of Strasbourg in 1953-54.

The aim of these lectures is to analyse the metaphysics of Plato and Aristotle and to discern in their work the ontological foundations of Western philosophy. The relation between Plato and Aristotle is commonly portrayed as a contrast between a philosophy of essence and a philosophy of substance, but Ricoeur shows that this opposition is too simple. Aristotelian ontology is not a simple antithesis to Platonism: the radical ontology of Aristotle stands in a far more subtle relation of continuity and opposition to that of Plato and it is this relation we have to reconstruct and understand.

Ricoeur’s lectures offer a brilliant analysis of the great works of Plato and Aristotle which has withstood the test of time. They also provide a unique insight into the development of Ricoeur’s thinking in the early 1950s, revealing that, even at this early stage of his work, Ricoeur was focused sharply on issues of language and the text.

nuance
By Amazon Customer
Why are we getting all of these fascinating old lectures from great French intellectuals all in a relatively recent rush? Is this the new academic thing to do? There is the series by Foucault – perhaps up to six volumes by now? (I only have four but I am sure there is at least one other and they go by year and there are missing years.) And now it seems the same situation is happening with Ricoeur. Did everyone even know this was something he did? Yet from the very start it is clear that he is a master educator explaining the key issues in the beginnings (and still key today) of philosophy with the contrast between Plato and Aristotle. I myself am guilty of teaching just the mistaken dichotomy he describes us as all guilty of doing. But can students not even aware of the basics be introduced in any other way? While I enjoy the nuance Paul Ricoeur develops, it seems already too difficult for many of my introductory students. I suspect they would be best served if they first learned the (incorrect but) standard approach to Plato and Aristotle and then as they became more knowledgeable delved into the sort of nuance he gives us. So this book does not strike me as a resource for the undergraduate.

Challenging, but rich for those who would mine its veins
By Timothy Walker
Western philosophy, if not Western civilization, is a structure built upon Plato and Aristotle. This book is Ricoeur's analysis of their ontology. It is NOT for the layperson, nor even the armchair philosopher, as it is structured much like a teacher's guide or lecture notes... there is no review and no hand holding. For the right reader, though, this is a fantastic book.

Ontology Redux
By K. N.
“The long term goal of this course is to work out the ontological foundations of our Western philosophy, so as to understand its intention by way of the history of its beginning” (p. 1). So begins Paul Ricoeur’s 1953-54 seminar on Plato and Aristotle, which is here translated into English for the first time and presented in its entirety.

If that sounds like an ambitious opening gambit, you wouldn’t be incorrect. Ricoeur aims to parse philosophical distinctions in the realm of ontology – or the study of the nature of being – by examining the original thinkers of that realm. I won’t belabor the point (which Polity’s blurb and other reviewers make explicit) that Ricoeur’s task is to show how Plato and Aristotle articulate complementary views of ontology, which flies against received opinion that their views are opposed. It’s not for me to judge the “accuracy” of such a claim because the entire point of the exercise is to mull over the question of being, and of reality, full stop. In other words, this is not the kind of work that one assigns a star rating to based on whether one agrees with Ricoeur’s conclusions. It is, rather, a book whose quality might only be realized in repeated readings over a long period of time.

What I can say is that the seminar is a surprising English-language addition to Ricoeur’s already substantial corpus of philosophical work. Surprising in part because Ricoeur was relatively young (roughly 40) when he taught the seminar at the University of Strasbourg. But surprising, too, because the book is without question one of the more serious studies of ontology in the twentieth century. I put it up there (and bookend it) with Heidegger’s Being and Time (1927) and Badiou’s Being and Event (1988), in fact.

That the English-speaking world has received Ricoeur’s writings on time and utopia much earlier and with greater fanfare than this seminar is, perhaps, indicative of how philosophical work must be “related” to something else (e.g., literature, art, etc.) in order for it to be understood outside of continental Europe. Polity’s publication of the seminar is commendable, then, especially during these lean times for nonutilitarian thought.
