Race and Immigration, by Nazli Kibria, Cara Bowman, Megan O'Leary

Immigration has long shaped US society in fundamental ways. With Latinos recently surpassing African Americans as the largest minority group in the US, attention has been focused on the important implications of immigration for the character and role of race in US life, including patterns of racial inequality and racial identity.

This insightful new book offers a fresh perspective on immigration and its part in shaping the racial landscape of the US today. Moving away from one-dimensional views of this relationship, it emphasizes the dynamic and mutually formative interactions of race and immigration. Drawing on a wide range of studies, it explores key aspects of the immigrant experience, such as the history of immigration laws, the formation of immigrant occupational niches, and developments of immigrant identity and community. Specific topics covered include: the perceived crisis of unauthorized immigration; the growth of an immigrant rights movement; the role of immigrant labor in the elder care industry; the racial strategies of professional immigrants; and the formation of pan-ethnic Latino identities.

Written in an engaging and accessible style, this book will be invaluable for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate-level courses in the sociology of immigration, race and ethnicity.

Review
"Race and Immigration tackles two of the most important issues facing American society and demonstrates how we cannot understand one without the other. In an insightful and clear examination of immigration laws, the occupations of immigrants, and the development of identities among newcomers and their children, the authors show how race shapes the fortunes of the newest Americans and how they in turn are shaping the meaning of race in America. This is a readable, intelligent overview of dynamic trends that are reshaping our society."
Mary C. Waters, Harvard University

"From the development of policy to immigrant incorporation and identities, this highly readable book makes clear that racial inequalities and boundaries are central to our understanding of immigration in the United States."
Nancy Foner, Hunter College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York

"While many scholars have written about race and immigration, this book uniquely brings contemporary structures of racism and immigration to a wide variety of readers. Amidst the political rhetoric of a 'post-racial society' the authors remind us that racism continues to exert deleterious effects on a variety of groups including immigrants. Equally important, this book reminds us about the racialization of two groups that remain less visible in the migration literature: highly skilled migrants and black immigrants. A very timely and useful book for scholars, practitioners, and a general audience of interested readers."
Bandana Purkayastha, University of Connecticut

"Race and Immigration's serious examination of the relationship between immigration, race, and ethnicity is a welcome respite from the din of the acrimonious public debate on the costs and benefits of contemporary immigration. Chock-full of useful and up-to-date information on hotly contested immigration issues, it is a valuable resource for all those interested in social change."
Yen Le Espiritu, University of California, San Diego

A Must Read
By Margaret L. Andersen
Anyone who wants to know more about immigration and to understand what lies behind some of the politics surrounding immigration should read this book. The authors have done a masterful job of showing how racial politics are intricately linked to immigration debates and they challenge some of the classical sociological thinking that separates race and ethnicity. This is a sophisticated argument that is highly accessible to the general readership. Excellent selection for undergraduate courses on race and ethnicity, too!

Twitter: Social Communication in the Twitter Age (Digital Media and Society), by Dhiraj Murthy

Twitter has become a household name, discussed both for its role in prominent national elections, natural disasters, and political movements, as well as for what some malign as narcissistic “chatter.” This book takes a critical step back from popular discourse and media coverage of Twitter, to present the first balanced, scholarly engagement of this popular medium.

In this timely and comprehensive introduction, Murthy not only discusses Twitter’s role in our political, economic, and social lives, but also draws a historical line between the telegraph and Twitter to reflect on changes in social communication over time. The book thoughtfully examines Twitter as an emergent global communications medium and provides a theoretical framework for students, scholars, and tweeters to reflect critically on the impact of Twitter and the contemporary media environment. The book uses case studies including citizen journalism, health, and national disasters to provide empirically rich insights and to help decipher some of the ways in which Twitter and social media more broadly may be shaping contemporary life.

Repetative book without much substance
By Short-T
Murthy analyzes social media communication through the lens of sociological theory and practice. While I made some applicable connections with this required text for my graduate studies in professional writing, I did not find it very helpful in learning about effective strategies for digital media engagement, especially since I already use social networks for business purposes. (It should be noted that a classmate without social networking experience also expressed that the book lacks tangible information.)

'Twitter' was published in 2013 and cites sources through 2011. The resulting gaps in information about the availability of digital technology and recent advancements on Twitter and Facebook are evident in Murthy's arguments. Murthy indeed makes some good points but overemphasizes them throughout. Likewise, he seems to get on a soapbox about certain topics and introduces new information during his "conclusions." Because of its lack of substance and its persistent repetition of content and word usage, this book would be more effective at half its current length.

All in all, I am not that impressed.

Heidegger and the Media (Theory and Media), by David Gunkel, Paul A. Taylor

The most significant philosopher of Being, Martin Heidegger has nevertheless largely been ignored within communications studies. This book sets the record straight by demonstrating the profound implications of his unique philosophical project for our understanding of today’s mediascape. The full range of Heidegger’s writing from Being and Time to his later essays is drawn upon.

Topics covered include:
- an analysis of Heidegger's theory of language and its relevance to communications studies
- a critical interpretation of mass media and digital culture that draws upon Heidegger's key concept of Dasein
- a discussion of mediated being and its objectifying tendencies
- an assessment of Heidegger's legacy for future developments in media theory

Clear explanations and accessible commentary are used to guide the reader through the work of a thinker whose notorious reputation belies the highly topical nature of his key insights.
In a world full of digital networks and new social media, but little critical insight, Heidegger and the Mediashows how a true understanding of the media requires familiarity with Heidegger’s unique brand of thinking.

Review
"At last, a long overdue account of Heidegger's profound relevance for understanding contemporary media. Gunkel and Taylor shed powerful light onto the philosophical corners of media and cultural studies that more timid scholars have stubbornly failed to reach. Neither Heidegger studies nor media studies will remain the same after the impact of this immensely engaging theoretical tour de force!"
Slavoj ?i?ek

"Gunkel and Taylor reveal an unacknowledged dimension of Heidegger’s media theory which contradicts the predominant understanding of his work. They argue that there is something to be found in Heidegger’s thought which prevents one from succumbing to a widespread illusion – the illusion of the neutrality of technique, what McLuhan later called 'the current somnambulism'. Thus, a profoundly productive, critical dimension in Heidegger’s theory becomes accessible which stands in harsh opposition to the 'somnambulism' that this philosopher himself performed in his utterly problematic personal, ideological existence. Gunkel and Taylor perspicuously show how Heidegger could have done better, had he more carefully listened to his own findings. And we? We definitely can: under the condition that we do."
Robert Pfaller, International Director of the Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities

Whither Media? Can Heidegger Point The Way?
By Rudolf Bisanz
A lucid writing style, a logical plan of content, and extensive documentation distinguish this volume. Its adaptability in deciphering Martin Heidegger's individualist prose-his virtuoso Philosophendeutsch-and construing it sympathetically and helpfully, adds to the book's effectiveness. As with the other volumes in the Polity Press series, "Theory and the Media," it is addressed to an academic and "media-savvy" readership. Also, all those willing to test their knowledge of, or oblige their curiosity about a timely and provocative topic, can well profit from it. Some might wish that the authors had relied less on secondary translations, and more on direct recourse to the original (M. H. Gesamtausgabe, Frkf. a. M.: Klostermann Vrlg., 1975 ff.). Others may ask, why they had not added space, to develop their plethora of engaging topics more fully. The following merely touches on a select few major points among the many advanced by the authors.

A primer to this review should note that Heidegger's frequent manner of expression resembles a quasi-cryptic meander between philosophy and "poetry." This offers a chance to indulge in liberal flexibility within reason, of interpreting Heidegger's words. His foremost intention to pose questions and free thinking, has further vouchsafed his prodigious influence on postmodern speculation, from deconstructionism on to neo-pragmatism. The current authors' stimulating discussion partakes of that legacy to best advantage. Overarching all, hovers their caveat regarding Heidegger's persistent, didactic challenge: His emphasis on the process of questioning as such, while abstaining from offering prescriptively conclusive, let alone formulaic answers.

The authors examine aspects of language, especially its use by Heidegger, the systematic manipulation of truth by the media, technical procedures of mechanically organized communication, and technology per se. Of further interest to them is the relationship of "truth" versus "mediation," and Heidegger's related distinction between consequential versus inconsequential variants of language. The latter includes the difference between "die Rede," as existential speech (language, words, talk, etc.), and "die Sprache," as an ontologically comprehensive entity. Also being considered is "art," as playing an attenuated or transmuted, ancillary cultural role. As all else within the contemporary ethos, it, too, is thoroughly besotted by technology-über-alles.

Gunkel and Taylor deserve kudos for elucidating the apparent failure of the media to assess the comprehensive role of technology in essential questions of human existence. Their approach is closely correlated with their search for meaning of Heidegger's potentially transformative theories on "das Wesen" of technology (designating variably its being, essence, substance, state, condition, nature, supreme entity, et al). In turn, this consideration bears decisively on consequential communication, the technology of media instrumentation and technology in general, as a constant and superseding function in contemporary life.

The authors' analysis of the media relates to Heidegger's hermeneutic distinction between two approaches: The Dasein-immanent (or phenomenologically factual and immediate), and the Sein-inherent (or ontologically essential or pervasive). This distinction aids in critically calibrating the gap separating media responsiveness to the ontic, noumenal, or sensate experiencing of data, and the recurrent negligence by the media of the higher-order meaning, i.e., of "das Wesen" of technology.

In spite of the volume's brevity, it treats of Heidegger's purview of technology effectively as-we may assume-an ubiquitous, perpetually active force in the lives of individuals and of society at large. We may deduce that, in its relation to the media, that potency fluctuates between being a lasting ogre, or an ever-present essence of unbiased mores. Heidegger's theme and the authors' discussion, insinuate the ad hoc, seemingly helter-skelter, stake-race by today's media. Their hot pursuit of fleeting technical innovations, and their gratuitous, celebratory inaugurations, defy their coherent appraisal.

The philosopher's Sein-Dasein bipolarity contrasts with the monocular acuity of today's media. It illumines the imbalanced doppelgänger nature of technology as techne-logos (art, craft, trade, etc.; and cause, communication, doctrine, question, etc.). In turn, Heidegger's own, famously opalescent, formulation of his duologic thought model of "being/existence" thus emerges as a prescheduled paradigm. Whatever else this may infer, it illumines today's media as being perspicacity-challenged in their ability to recognize the "whole picture."

Heidegger's provocative questioning opens the floodgates of discourse and speculation. In the present context, we may ask: Will the media pause to glance at such of the authors' various sources as Heidegger's foundational Being and Time (1927), or his specialized, The Question Concerning Technology (1954)? And will they note Gunkel's and Taylor's enquiry into the philosopher's probing insights on the communication of reflection, his provisos on the pervasive nature of technology, and his sinuous evocations of a path to the future of technologic civilization? Or will they, in their frenetic rush from one techno-phenom to another, continue missing the forest for all the trees?

Health, by Mildred Blaxter

The second edition of Mildred Blaxter's successful and highly respected book offers a comprehensive and engaging introduction to the key debates surrounding the concept of health today. It discusses how health is defined, constructed, experienced and acted out in contemporary developed societies, drawing on a range of empirical data from the USA, Britain, France, and many other countries.

The new edition has been thoroughly revised and updated, with new material added on health and identity, the "new genetics", the sociology of the body, and the formation of health capital throughout the life course. The topic is the concept of health, rather than the more usual emphasis on illness and health-care systems. Special emphasis is given to the lay perspective to show how people themselves think about and experience health. Blaxter guides students through all the relevant conceptual models of the relationship of health to the structure of society, from inequality in health to the ideas of the risk society, the ‘socio-biological translation’ and the contribution of health to social capital. The book concludes with a comprehensively revised and thought-provoking discussion of the impact of new technology, the boundaries between life and death, modern commodification of health, technological transformations of the body and theories of evolutionary biology.

Health is an invaluable textbook for students of medicine and other health professions as well as those studying sociology, health sciences and health promotion.

Review
"A great text: revised and updated for students of health, whatever their discipline or background. Changes in science, technology and our understanding of the body are among the many important topics covered. Mildred Blaxter writes in a lucid style and has a command of her material that is second to none. Highly recommended."
Mike Bury, Royal Holloway, University of London

"Updated and with new material, this book provides a fascinating insight into the phenomenon of health and how it is defined, constructed, expressed and experienced. Written in a clear and engaging style, it is an indispensable resource for students and researchers in the health and social sciences."
Ellen Annandale, University of Leicester

"This fine book takes sociological perspectives of health as a point of departure, while at the same time increasing our understanding of illness. Students and professionals alike will benefit from Blaxter's clear and succinct presentation."
Peter Conrad, Brandeis University

Pretty interesting book. I haven't read it in over a year, so I can't give a really informative review. I read it for a class, but there were things that would have interested me personally, regardless.

Social Justice in a Global Age, by Olaf Cramme, Patrick Diamond

What is the relationship between the principles of social justice and global justice? How can we best reconcile the quest for greater social justice ‘at home' with greater social justice in the world? Are the social justice pressures our societies currently face the result of globalisation or are they domestically generated? How can we advance social justice in the light of the new social realities? In this volume, leading international experts offer compelling answers to these questions.

The aim of this volume is to articulate a modern conception of social justice that remains relevant for an era of rapid globalisation. The authors have developed a robust theoretical account of the relationship between globalisation and social justice complemented by an underpinning policy framework that aims to sustain new forms of equity and solidarity.

Review
"A very satisfying collection."
International Affairs

"A visionary work concerned with what the principles of social justice 'ought' to be in the global age."
Political Studies Review

"Presents a wealth of ideas that will be valuable not only for those in the academic and political spheres, but also for leaders of foundations and NGOs working to promote social and economic development."
Effect

"A 'must read' for all searching for a way to make globalisation more equitable and to renew social policies at a time of ever-growing interdependence. The huge challenge of the financial and economic crisis of 2009 makes these reflections all the more timely."
Kemal Dervis, Former Head of the United Nations Development Programme, and author of A Better Globalization: Legitimacy, Governance, and Reform

"From the wreckage of the world's financial system two insights emerge. Global economic integration demands stronger global governance; and the political legitimacy of globalisation depends on an equitable distribution of the fruits of prosperity. Economic efficiency cannot be separated from social justice. This collection of essays provides essential reading for the most important debate of our times."
Philip Stephens, Associate Editor, Financial Times

"Cramme and Diamond have produced a very timely collection given growing protectionist impulses and the urgent need to rethink the governance of globalisation. These original and reflective essays, written by key thinkers and advocates in the field, challenge orthodox thinking about social justice under conditions of economic globalisation. At this moment of global crisis this book deserves to be read as a reminder that duties to our compatriots and to others must be and can be reconciled."
Tony McGrew, Professor of International Relations, Southampton University, and co-author of Globalization/Anti-Globalization

Moral Blindness: The Loss of Sensitivity in Liquid Modernity, by Zygmunt Bauman, Leonidas Donskis

Evil is not confined to war or to circumstances in which people are acting under extreme duress. Today it more frequently reveals itself in the everyday insensitivity to the suffering of others, in the inability or refusal to understand them and in the casual turning away of one’s ethical gaze. Evil and moral blindness lurk in what we take as normality and in the triviality and banality of everyday life, and not just in the abnormal and exceptional cases.

The distinctive kind of moral blindness that characterizes our societies is brilliantly analysed by Zygmunt Bauman and Leonidas Donskis through the concept of adiaphora: the placing of certain acts or categories of human beings outside of the universe of moral obligations and evaluations. Adiaphora implies an attitude of indifference to what is happening in the world – a moral numbness.  In a life where rhythms are dictated by ratings wars and box-office returns, where people are preoccupied with the latest gadgets and forms of gossip, in our ‘hurried life’ where attention rarely has time to settle on any issue of importance, we are at serious risk of losing our sensitivity to the plight of the other. Only celebrities or media stars can expect to be noticed in a society stuffed with sensational, valueless information.

This probing inquiry into the fate of our moral sensibilities will be of great interest to anyone concerned with the most profound changes that are silently shaping the lives of everyone in our contemporary liquid-modern world.

Complex, but very elucidating.
By Jacques Stifelman
It is a very high level dialogue between two scientists that permeates our social and individual behavior. I suggest the reader not to stop reading when the understanding fail because as the dialogue continues the understanding comes back. The authors seem to be independents from any submission to specific groups of thought academic or not.

Moral Blindness
By Damaskcat
I like the format of this book – a dialogue between two experts. That said I found the book heavy going and not by any means a light read. It is a fascinating subject and something which should concern everyone in modern society. We seem to have developed a total unconcern for the suffering of others as evidenced by incidents such as people on a road bridge being urged to jump because they are holding everyone up.

This is not a book for the general reader and unless you’re used to reading at the level of university text books then you are going to struggle with this book as I did. I would love to read a book on the same subject aimed at the general reader as it is something which we all need to be aware of. There is always a danger if we are too wrapped up in our busy lives that we will cease to be aware of others.

He raises critical issues, but this is not his best response
By David Stein
Bauman has been a significant voice in the battle to keep our humanity in the face of modern commercialism and ethical blindness in politics. His questions, and many of his answers remain among the finest expositions of a humane responses to capitalism, totalitarianism and communism. He continues bravely to battle the forces of darkness, moral dissociation and human indifference. While this is not his best book, it is still well worth reading, though I found Liquid Life and Liquid Love to be much better.
